With Halloween this week, most families are probably gearing up for their annual showing of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Historically, it’s been quite easy to tune in on television to catch the iconic cartoon, but in typical 2020 fashion, it’s different this year.

The sole home to the Peanuts fall feature will be on Apple TV+. Before you worry, the special will actually stream for free and here’s how.

All three specials will be completely free for everyone on specific dates. It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown will stream for free from Oct. 30-Nov. 1

If you need a little more encouragement, Apple TV+ will also be the home of Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and Charlie Brown Christmas specials, which will also stream for free. These fan fave flicks will stream Nov. 25 through Nov. 27 and Dec. 11 through Dec. 13.

The pandemic has ground many industries and sources of entertainment to a halt, and that includes movie theaters. If you’ve been missing the smell of buttered popcorn and action-packed flicks, your choice to return to the theater has arrived.

AMC Theatres is now allowing private rentals for up to a group of 20 people, and it won’t break the bank. Starting at $99, guests can select their movie, location and add-ons such as food, drink, microphone rental and additional time to gain access to the auditorium through the AMC website. While the specific movie and extras can add up, it’s more than doable to host your own private showing on a budget.

When you select your movie, the site will show the cost for the film, which can range from $99 to $349 plus tax. Currently, AMC is hosting some classics that include Monsters Inc., Jurassic Park and The Nightmare Before Christmas in addition to newer films like The War on Grandpa. Newer films will cost more than an old fave.

All you have to do is fill out the Events Inquiry Form, wait a few days to be contacted, then head to the theater to enjoy your AMC Safe & Clean auditorium.

If there is one thing that is becoming more and more clear as we continue to navigate the atmosphere of the global pandemic and national unrest, it is that we are being called upon to live differently. While this article is about reducing your children’s long-term stress related to the toll of COVID-19, I will not be focusing directly on the children but rather, I will be focusing on you.

Good News = Bad News
Do you want the good news or the bad news? The answer is the same for both, but how you perceive the answer will make it good or bad. Here goes…every moment, of every day, you are modeling for your children how to deal with stressful and enormously difficult situations. So, the impact of what we say to them-imparting our sage wisdom-pales in comparison to what they observe in our everyday behaviors.

The fact that our actions speak louder than words can be upsetting as we think about all the ways we behave where we have not been shining examples. Or where we have believed in the motto “do as I say, not as I do.” Let’s shift that narrative to one that both puts the well-being of parents first and provides children what they need during stressful and normal times. This is a win-win for everyone!

Self-Compassion to the Rescue
There are many positive, stress-relieving behaviors that would be valuable to practice, but if I had to pick one as my superpower it would be… self-compassion. A woman I highly respect in this arena is a researcher and author of Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself, Dr. Kristin Neff. Self-compassion, according to Neff, is showing kindness and understanding toward yourself during challenging times. Showing compassion for yourself means accepting your humanness and opening your heart to the reality that in life “losses will occur, you will make mistakes, bump up against your limitations, and fall short of your ideals.” This is the human condition—a reality shared by all of us.

The three elements of self-compassion include:

  1. Self-kindness vs. Self-judgment: We all fall short of ours and others’ expectations and ideals so instead of criticizing ourselves we accept this reality with kindness and experience great emotional equanimity.
  2. Common humanity vs. Isolation: Suffering and personal inadequacy are common human experiences, not something that happens to me alone.
  3. Mindfulness vs. Overidentification: In order to foster self-compassion we are called to create a balanced approach to our negative emotions where feelings are neither exaggerated nor suppressed.

Sounds great right? I feel calmer just reading them. Living these elements of self-compassion on an ongoing basis is another matter completely. We have many years of opposing behavior so we need to be gentle with ourselves as we build our capacity.

Self-compassion Training Camp
Dr. Neff prescribes guided meditations and exercises to practice. Watch being “judgy” as you read these. They are “touchy-feely” and sweet. So, the bigger your negative reaction to them, the more you need them. Here is one of my favorites:

Supportive Touch: We need a lot of comfort these days with home-schooling, juggling obligations, grappling with the unknown. In these moments activating our parasympathetic nervous system and care system is an easy way to care for yourself. You can do this by putting one hand on your cheek or cradling your face in your hands. Or you can gently stroke your arm or top of your thighs. Basically, anything you would do to calm or soothe your child you do for yourself here.

These simple acts pack a powerful punch. According to the research our skin is super sensitive and when gently touched releases oxytocin which in turn provides security, calms cardiovascular stress, and soothes distressing emotions. I like them because I can do them all day, discreetly and no one even knows I am doing them.

You also do not have to wait until you are in a stressful situation to practice this. Dr. Judith Wright, author of The Soft Addictions Solution, points out that in fact we are way more likely to implement a new behavior in a stressful situation if we have been practicing it regularly. Wright also reminds us that new habits, like being self-compassionate with ourselves, do not take a lot of time but they do take conscious practice.

More Good News
Remember at the start of this article when I said our behavior is our children’s best teacher? Well, the good news is we don’t have to do it perfectly for them to benefit. Your efforts, openness, and willingness to try, make mistakes and be on the path is the most valuable gift you can give them. In fact, they don’t even need to see you practicing, they will feel it and more importantly, so will you.

Even though children are less at-risk of showing symptoms of the virus, the rate at which they can transmit it to others is still uncertain, and many parents wonder whether it’s wise or not to allow their children to return to daycare.

Make sure that your daycare is taking the necessary precautions before taking your child back. This will keep your child, the other children, daycare employees, and yourself as safe as possible during the pandemic. If you’re struggling to decide on whether to send your child back to daycare, here are some questions and factors to consider:

Do you have the time and resources to keep your child at home?

Childcare can be expensive, but forgoing a paycheck so you can care for your child can also strain your budget. If you’re the sole provider, staying home may not even be an option. Are there ways to work from home? Even if your company has requested that you physically come back to work, many useful resources out there provide tips on how you might be able to persuade your boss to let you do your job remotely.

Do you live with a person over 65?

As you know, the elderly are at high-risk of COVID-19 and may catch the virus from your child even if your child is not showing any signs of infection. Be sure to consider whether other people in your household have conditions that can make them more vulnerable to the virus, such as respiratory conditions like asthma.

Does your community already have a high level of transmission?

Even though states are slowly re-opening, some areas are struggling with virus containment more than others. Safety guidelines will vary by location, but it’s important everywhere to continue being cautious around group gatherings.

Is your daycare transparent about the health measures they’re implementing?

Daycares should have a clear plan in place on safety measures like how often they’re disinfecting surfaces, what their mask policy will be, and their procedure for if a child starts showing COVID-19 symptoms. Ask your daycare provider about their plans on how they’re going to keep your child safe. Let them know about your concerns upfront about sending your kid back. They will understand this is a stressful decision, and should be able to answer your questions fully and hopefully calm your anxiety.

How will your mental health be impacted by either decision?

The pandemic is taking a mental toll on everyone, keeping tabs on your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Should you choose to send your child back to daycare, will you be worrying about their health and safety the entire day? Are you worried about finances from choosing to stay at home with your child rather than working? While the safety of your child is your top priority, don’t forget about your own health during your decision process.

Questions to Ask Your Daycare Provider

  • What’s your face mask policy? Will staff be wearing masks?

  • Will you be following CDC safety guidelines?

  • How will you screen children for symptoms before they enter the daycare?

  • How often will you be wiping down surfaces?

  • What will be the ratio of staff to children?

  • What will the drop off and pick up procedures be?

  • What’s your plan if someone becomes sick?

  • Will you be allowing visitors at the daycare?

Should you decide to send your child back to daycare, make sure the daycare is implementing safety protocols. Higher-priority strategies include keeping class sizes small to minimize crossover, utilize outdoor spaces when possible, and to limit unnecessary visitors in the building. Lower-priority strategies include face coverings for the children since it may be difficult to implement due to their age, and reducing classmate interaction and play since it may not provide a substantial risk reduction. Babies and children under the age of two should not wear face masks due to suffocation dangers.

While COVID-19 concerns among adults are entirely valid, you should find some comfort in the fact that daycare aged children (under the age of ten) are substantially less at risk of contracting the virus. And even if they do become infected, studies have shown that over 90% of the pediatric cases of the virus are either asymptomatic or mild.

Choosing whether to send your child back to daycare is not an easy decision. Financial, personal, and societal responsibilities should all be factors to consider. If you do decide to return to using daycare, make sure that the facility is doing everything in their power to keep children and everyone around them as safe as possible

Election 2020 is nearing and Barbie is entering the race. Mattel just announced the first-ever Campaign Team set to expose girls to public leadership roles and get them interested in helping to shape the future. The new career set includes four diverse dolls with roles, including candidate, campaign manager, fundraiser and voter to show girls the importance of a political team working together to win.

Barbie Campaign Team

With seven runs for office since 1992, Barbie has a long history of showing girls they can and should be in office. Ahead of the 2020 election, the brand is launching this new doll set alongside a full marketing program aimed at the next generation of leaders by highlighting the importance of voting and taking a stand and showing girls how to run a campaign. The set highlights dolls of different ethnicities, including a Black candidate, to remind all girls they can lead from the polls to the podium.

“Since 1959, Barbie has championed girls and encouraged them to be leaders whether in the classroom, community or someday, of the country,” said Lisa McKnight, SVP and Global Head of Barbie & Dolls, Mattel. “With less than a third of elected leaders in the U.S. being women, and Black women being even less represented in these positions, we designed the Barbie Campaign Team with a diverse set of dolls to show all girls they can raise their voices. Our goal is to remove barriers to leadership by giving girls the tools to imagine and play out their future roles.”

The brand has teamed up with She Should Run, a non-partisan non-profit that provides guidance and support to women considering a run for office. While we know there are barriers to getting girls in leadership roles, 66% of adults surveyed by She Should Run* observed an increased perception in leadership potential in children who role-play.

With a continued effort on determining how to foster girls’ leadership ambition, Barbie and She Should Run are directly addressing the top barriers to girls’ leadership, which are self-limiting beliefs that are in line with what the brand seeks to address through the Barbie Dream Gap Project.

In addition to being a longtime partner, She Should Run is a recipient of funds from the Barbie Dream Gap Project and has dedicated resources in part to Help Her Lead, a course designed to support young girls, particularly girls of color, in their pathway to political leadership by giving adult role models the resources and guidance to engage and inspire them early in life. To effectively build political leadership ambition, role models can host intentional conversations about why it’s important to lead, demonstrate their own involvement through fundraising or volunteer efforts and role-play leadership activities, like giving a speech.

“With the upcoming elections and the current push for equality and representation, 2020 is an incredible time for us to inspire young women and girls to lead,” said Erin Loos Cutraro, founder and CEO of She Should Run. “Understanding the role we play in empowering our daughters is the first step—we have to have healthy conversations at home and encourage curiosity. By getting them excited today, we’re giving them the confidence to raise their voices and run for office tomorrow.”

Additional educational resources, including play ballots and printable activities, prompts for girls to write their own campaign speeches and more will be available on Barbie.com/CampaignTeam and a new “Ask Barbie” video will be live on the Barbie YouTube channel. The Barbie Campaign Team, sold as a set, is available for $39.99 from major online retailers starting today.
