Your daughter loves her pairs of Rothy’s loafers about as much as you love your flats. Well, now your son can get in on the action with the brand-new kids’ sneaker line—which has sizes and prints for both boys and girls! Made with the same sustainable practices as the adult shoe, keep reading to discover your kids’ new favorite slip-on shoe.

The Details

Rothy’s launched a girls’ loafer line in 2018, and they’ve already achieved the same cult-favorite status of their adult counterpart, so the next step for Rothy’s was to introduce a slip-on shoe that every kid can wear. Tested out by active, busy kids, the sneakers are washable and offered in 10 different colors and prints inspired by the bright colors of the 1970s. Like all Rothy’s shoes, the sneaker has an athletic outsole, and the stretchy knit is made out of recycled water bottles.

“As a team, we loved seeing the response to our Girls’ Loafer last year. For many, the product fostered mother-daughter conversations about sustainability and recycling,” said Rothy’s Creative Director Erin Lowenberg. “When our customers started asking for a girls’ version of our sneaker we thought, why not include the whole family? The Kids’ Sneaker is a playful and gender-neutral shoe for little ones to learn about sustainability and play with happy feet—and they’re machine washable to boot!”

What’s the secret behind Rothy’s?

Rothy’s is a three-year-old company founded by Stephen Hawthornthwaite and Roth Martin, looking to re-imagine the stylish classics. They didn’t want career women to have to choose between style and comfort, so instead, they created an incredibly durable, machine-washable, flexible shoe that moves with the foot. The shoe was a hit and continues to wow.

And, they care about the process. Each shoe allows for less than 5% waste, rather than the typical 35% of materials that end up on a production floor. Rothy’s uses recycled water bottles to create their popular fabrics, and to date, they’ve repurposed over 25 million water bottles. And, each shoe is 100% recyclable: materials include recycled foam, vegan and other non-toxic adhesives and each shoe has a carbon-free rubber sole. Talk about being light on your feet.

Where to Buy Them

The brand-new sneaker line from Rothy’s is offered in sizes 10-4. Available at rothys.com, $55 a pair. If you happen to be in San Francisco, stop by the brick and mortar store located at 2448 Fillmore St. in San Francisco, CA

These Genius Shoes Are a No-Brainer Way to Get the Kids Out the Door Faster

I hear it all the time—online, in interviews, in mom groups—parents complaining because their provider took a scheduled vacation day, a.k.a., paid time off. The parent has to find alternate care, but they still have to pay daycare.

I also hear: “It’s not fair!” “If they aren’t providing the service, why should I have to pay?” “I don’t get paid time off—why should they?”

True, you don’t get paid time off when you have to stay home with your child. However, there are plenty of working families who do. In fact, most people who work a career, get paid time off. and let’s face it—you want a provider who sees her job as a career, not a temporary working situation.

So you don’t get paid time off and your provider wants paid time off. You don’t feel that’s very fair. Now, the mom in me wants to say, “Fair is a place where you ride the rides and get cotton candy. Life isn’t fair.” Howeverthis is your livelihood, your child and the person you trust to help raise your child. So your concern is understandable.

Let’s put this into perspective. Here are some “perks” you likely get at your job—that your daycare provider doesn’t get:

  • Overtime
  • Lunch breaks
  • Adult interaction
  • To pee in private
  • To drink coffee—while it’s still hot
  • A 401k

So, here’s the deal.

We know that when we take time off from work, it inconveniences you. We know. For our family, when we go on vacation, I am well aware that I have five other families who now have to take time off to compensate for my fun. Guilt doesn’t cover it. I used to hate planning family vacations, for the sole reason that I didn’t want to tell my parents that I’m taking time off.

(In fact, to be perfectly candid, I don’t take my vacations paid because of the guilt. I do, however, take major holidays paid. And after four years of running a family childcare home, I finally gave myself a few sick days in my contract.)

Here’s why childcare providers both need and deserve some paid time off:

You value yourself. As a childcare provider, mother, wife and woman, you have value. You have an important job which demands a lot and as such, you need to practice self care. Part of practicing that self care is the ability to take time off to reconnect with yourself and your family—and the same value applies to your childcare provider.

Your childcare provider values their job. It seems like a contradiction—but I believe most moms understand—we are better parents when we have time to fill our own cups. As caregivers of your kids, have this amazing, beautiful honor of shaping and raising your children and we don’t take it lightly. We want to do it well. But it’s nearly impossible to pour out of yourself when your own private cup is empty.

We can’t be the “Mom who smiles” all the time without taking care of ourselves, too. To put it simply, being a good childcare provider and practicing self-care go hand-in-hand. And that means, very frequently, paid time off.

Take it from me: childcare providers need to take time for themselves. Parents, respect the person helping raise your children and understand their need for self-care. It just helps them better able to give your littles all the love and care they need.

As a childcare provider, photographer and writer, I get motherhood, from feeling like you're doing too much and not enough to finding your identity somewhere between "I am woman, hear me roar" and "I am mom, hear me yell." I see you, I've been there. We are in it together.

If you have even one LEGO set at home, chances are you have the very painful first-hand experience of the agony of stepping on one. Oh those pointy little bricks, that somehow manage to camouflage themselves on your rug despite being candy-colored. Fear not, for a new DIY LEGO vacuum is here to save your feet.

This LEGO vacuum isn’t just good for the sole—it’s also a helpful way to clean up when play time is over for your mini master builders. Using the suction of a regular vacuum, the hose picks up LEGO bricks from the ground and deposits them into a storage container for instant clean up.

If you’re hoping to score one of these incredible devices in a store, you’re out of luck. Despite the fact that many parents would pay an arm and a leg (or at least a sore foot) for one of these, LEGO isn’t selling these. This ingenious DIY contraption was created by YouTuber The King of Random.

If you happen to be somewhat handy, you can follow the instructions on the YouTube video and make a LEGO vacuum of your very own. But LEGO, if you’re watching—you could have a pretty lucrative new product on your hands that parents would be more than happy to fork over fistfuls of cash to buy!

Ever see one of those amazingly simple parenting hacks and say to yourself, “Why didn’t think of that?!” That’s exactly what I—and hundreds of other internet parents did when we saw this genius kids shoe hack on Reddit posted Monday. In the r/Mommit subreddit, a user posted a photo of his kids’ shoes, but with one startlingly simple hack that literally had my mouth hanging open with how smart it is.

42-year-old Aaron Banikiotes is a realtor from Herndon, Virginia. He’s also a parent of a three-year-old boy named Eli who sometimes put his shoes on the wrong feet. Banikiotes solution? “Add a smiley face to your kid’s shoes so they know when the shoes are on the right feet,” he wrote on Reddit. Behold the brilliance:

Oh, but the brilliance doesn’t stop there. “I put a frown face on the other side,” Banikiotes told Red Tricycle.

If this feels like overkill, head to the Reddit comments, where other parents can totally understand that yes, sometimes they need a sign even if kids manage to get the shoes on but need a some kind of helping symbol on the other side, too. “Genuinely great idea. You would think kids can tell their shoes feel funny on the wrong feet,” one Redditor commented. “Sadly this is not the case.”

Banikiotes came up with the idea to label his son’s shoes when his son would come home from daycare with his shoes on the wrong feet.  Originally, he thought of putting simply an R and an L on the inside outer sole of each shoe. “I’m 42 and it took me more than 5 years to learn right and left. This [idea] just came to me within the past couple of days,” he said via direct message.

But what about those shoes you don’t want to—on can’t—draw on with Sharpie marker? Another Redditor weighed in with this idea: “You can also cut a sticker in half and stick it on their insoles if the rubber on the shoe is too dark to write on,” Redditor pineapplepretzel commented. While this might not be a new trick for some parents, for those Reddit parents like myself, this revelation is just too forehead-smacking-ly smart not to share.

Awkward parenting confession: My kid put on his shoes this weekend and made it down two flights of stairs, out the door, into the car and to a friend’s house before any of us realized his sneakers were on the wrong feet. Ah, yet another mom of the year moment. Now with this little kid shoe hack, we can avert shoe mixups in the future.

What are some of your brilliant parenting discoveries? Share your favorite parenting hacks in the comments.

With Thanksgiving coming up, closely followed by even more holiday eating, it’s the perfect time to get some preventative exercise in and support several local charities at the same time. If your fam is ready for some turkey trottin’ and reindeer runnin’ this holiday season, read on and get ready to lace up your tennies and participate in these local fun runs.

Seattle Turkey Trot

Start your Turkey Day off with some energy burnin’ fun at the 9th Annual Seattle Turkey Trot benefiting the Ballard Food Bank. This low-key run begins at 9 a.m. and offers a way for the community to come together, have fun and help out others in need. The scenic run starts in the Sunset Hill neighborhood near Ballard and finishes at Golden Gardens Park. Race organizers recommend parking at Golden Gardens and walking to the start line. There are several staircases and a trail to get up the hill to the start line. Psst... make sure you allow plenty of time to walk to the starting line and to pick up your t-shirt (pre-race pick-up is strongly encouraged on the evening of Nov. 25 at the Ballard Food Bank).

Good to Know: Strollers are allowed, however you will need to get the stroller between the park and the starting line. The best way to do this is to have someone drop you off at the start line and then go park your car. Shirts are available after the race on a first come, first serve basis.

Registration Costs: $25/Adults and $15/Kids (10 & under) until Nov. 17; $35/Adults and $20/Kids after Nov. 17.

Sole Food
It’s no secret we love local shops, so of course Sole Food in University Village made our shoe list. They offer brands and unique styles not found in other stores. Best part?  If you see something online that strikes your fancy, you can have it shipped right to the store and they’ll email you when it arrives.

Hennie McPennie
Another locally owned business on Mercer Island is Hennie McPennie. Not sure what size your wee one is (who can keep track these days with all the growing)? No problem! The nice folks at Hennie McPennie will measure for you using a brannock device which not only measures the length, but also the width and arch. Even if a shoe is uber-cute on, you gotta make sure the fit is precise. In addition to shoes, they also sell toys, so feel free to browse after you’ve scored the perfect pair of shoes.

Nordstrom
Hands down one of the best shoe departments in the Seattle area is at the Bellevue Square Nordstrom. Not only do they carry every style and brand imaginable, but the employees are great with kids, even those extra squirmy ones who have no interest in shoe shopping! And free balloons and interactive drawing boards (to keep kiddos busy during the shoe buying process) makes the trip across the bridge totally worth it.
