Do you have childhood memories of listening to tape cassettes on long drives? Or maybe it was stashes of CDs in the glove box? Great audio can turn long drives with the family into exciting adventures, and podcasts are a great way to entertain and engage young minds and stimulate interesting family chats.

We’re big fans of family-friendly podcasts—we even make one ourselves called Yoto Daily! And if you’re looking for the best podcasts for kids on long road trips, then here are five of our favorites.

1. But Why: A Podcast for Curious Kids If you want to spark some interesting drive-time conversations with your kids, then this is the place to start. But Why asks kids to send in their own questions, and then answers them with the help of subject matter experts. Questions vary from the small (why do ladybugs have spots?) to the big (What is the Coronavirus?) and episodes cover a wide range of subjects in between—cooking, science, language, and more. But Why is always entertaining, and breaks down complex subject matter into terms kids can understand and relate to.

2. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: This inspiring podcast isn’t just for bedtime, and it’s not just for girls! The publishers of the excellent Rebel Girls books bring some of their favorite biographies to life in the form of audio fairy tales. Each episode explores the lives of famous (and famously overlooked) women including Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Frida Kahlo, and Margaret Hamilton, and will no doubt inspire some fascinating conversation in your car and beyond.

3. The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian: This interstellar adventure podcast follows an 8-year-old boy, Finn Caspain, who lives on an interplanetary space station with his friends and their pet robots. Each episode is packed with sharp-witted humor and great sound effects, and the creator’s son, Griffin, makes regular guest appearances as the show’s Editor. There are over 100 episodes (around 13 hours) of this podcast available, making it perfect for enjoying over the course of a long family holiday.

4. Story Shed: When he’s not creating Yoto’s own kids’ podcast, Yoto Daily, Jake Harris is at home on the Story Shed podcast. Each episode features a new and original story for kids of all ages, often written with teachable lessons in mind – in fact, Jake was a school teacher himself before joining Yoto! Story Shed stories are great fun, often teeming with Roald Dahl-esque tension and humor. If your kids are into reading, they’ll love listening to these stories and uncovering the deeper meanings hidden within them.

5. Ear Snacks: This podcast is created by award-winning musical duo, Andrew and Polly, and explores the big wide world in all of its absurd, melodic glory. Young kids will learn about simple everyday things (rain, shadows, fruit) and delight in all the funny voices and eccentricities of the two hosts. Each episode features some terrific original tunes which will have the whole car bopping along, and submissions from listeners make the show feel relatable for young listeners.

Gather up all of those little astronauts in training.  Students from across the nation will have an opportunity to ask questions of the NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The special Earth-to-space call will air live at 1:10 p.m. ET on Fri., Jun. 19 on NASA Television and the agency’s website.

International Space Station

NASA astronauts Robert Behnken, Christopher Cassidy and Douglas Hurley will answer questions recorded by K-12 students from the Challenger Center’s national network of learning centers. Challenger Center provides more than 250,000 students annually with experiential STEM education programs. Challenger Center President and CEO Lance Bush will give opening remarks via a pre-recorded video. The student question-and-answer session will be the first of its kind with astronauts who arrived at the station on a commercially owned and operated spacecraft.

Cassidy launched to the space station Apr. 9 and currently serves as the commander of Expedition 63. On May 30, Behnken and Hurley became the first NASA astronauts to launch to the station aboard a commercial spacecraft and rocket, lifting off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule atop the company’s Falcon 9 rocket as part of NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 mission. Behnken and Hurley joined the Expedition 63 crew after their Dragon spacecraft, named Endeavour, arrived at the station May 31.

Linking students directly to astronauts aboard the space station provides unique, authentic experiences designed to enhance student learning, performance and interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Astronauts living in space on the orbiting laboratory communicate with NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston 24 hours a day through the Space Network’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS).

For nearly 20 years, astronauts have been continuously living and working on the space station, testing technologies, performing science and developing the skills needed to explore farther from Earth. Through NASA’s Artemis program, the agency will send astronauts to the Moon by 2024, with eventual human exploration of Mars. Inspiring the next generation of explorers – the Artemis Generation – ensures America will continue to lead in space exploration and discovery.

Many families are spending their time at home experimenting in the kitchen. For the first time ever, DoubleTree by Hilton is sharing the official bake-at-home recipe for the brand’s beloved and delicious chocolate chip cookie. Now you can bake up this treat with your kids and create a yummy treat everyone will enjoy.

DoubleTree by Hilton Chocolate Chip Cookie

DoubleTree Hotels worldwide are known for their famous cookies. Guests look forward to a warm chocolate chip cookie fresh from the oven, upon their arrival.

According to Hilton, “More than 30 million are consumed every year, and the DoubleTree chocolate chip cookie even became the first food to be baked in orbit during experiments aboard the International Space Station.”

Copycat recipes have been shared online for years, but only now has Hilton released the official version to create at home.

“We know this is an anxious time for everyone,” said Shawn McAteer, senior vice president and global head, DoubleTree by Hilton. A warm chocolate chip cookie can’t solve everything, but it can bring a moment of comfort and happiness. We hope families enjoy the fun of baking together during their time at home, and we look forward to welcoming all our guests with a warm DoubleTree cookie when travel resumes.”

Spring break vacations were grounded in the name of social distancing, but that doesn’t have to stop you from experiencing the world! Head out on the virtual highway, see what’s happening outside your 4 walls and gather ideas for planning your next family vacay when we’re free to roam. From squeal-worthy kittens to town squares in ancient cities, we promise we have a cam for you!

First Step: Make the Family (Virgin) Piña Coladas

Caribe Hilton

Channel tropical island vibes with 1950s inspo from Caribe Hilton — an iconic resort in San Juan, Puerto Rico that coined the original Piña Colada recipe. Caribe bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero created the drink in 1954 while mixing tropical fruits to come up with a refreshing welcome drink for hotel guests. The first Piña Coladas were non-alcoholic and made in a shaker (blenders didn’t yet exist). It wasn’t until years later that Monchito added local rum to his concoction and created what’s known as the world’s most popular vacation cocktail.

After serving the Piña Colada for 35 years, Monchito’s signature beverage was declared the official drink of Puerto Rico. Using the recipe below, families can recreate the original Piña Colada (hold the rum!) for the ultimate ‘mocktail’ that’ll have everyone in your house day-dreaming of sunshine, sand, and palm trees.

Caribe Hilton’s Original Piña Colada (Virgin!)
1 oz. coconut cream
1 oz. heavy cream
6 oz. pineapple juice
½ cup crushed ice

Directions
Mix cream of coconut, heavy cream and pineapple juice in a blender. Add ice and mix for 15 seconds. Serve in a 12 oz. glass and garnish with fresh pineapple and a cherry. Parents can add 2 oz. of rum to create the signature libation.

Kittens at Brooklyn Cat Cafe: Brooklyn, NY

Brooklyn Cat Cafe

Brooklyn Cat Cafe was one of the first cat cafes in the US and the only one in New York City run by a non-profit animal rescue organization, Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition (BBAWC). The cafe's mission is to save the city's cats while offering a hip and inviting destination where cat lovers of all ages can interact with adoptable animals. Their live kitten cam offers views of their kitten terrarium which houses a rotating cast of kitten families not yet ready to interact with people or other cats.

The sound of waves crashing, the smell of salt in the air, and the sea breeze tangling your toddler's hair into a bird's-nest-like style may not be in your future, but Hotel del Coronado's live beach cam offers a glimpse at the calming ocean waves.

The Western Wall: Jerusalem, Israel

Maria Chambers

Traditional Easter plans may be going out to pasture, but how about a visit to Jerusalem's Western Wall? Some believe this wall is a direct line to the big guy and visitors come to pray and write prayers on bits of paper they place in cracks of the wall. Twice a year, these written prayers are collected and buried in the cemetery at Mount of Olives, a mountain ridge adjacent to the Old City that's been used as a Jewish cemetery for over 3,000 years. You can view the site via the Western Wall live cam. Interesting fact: You'll see a dividing line down the middle. The left side is for men and the right women. They cannot pray together.

Piazza di Spagna: Rome, Italy

Be introduced via live webcam one of the most popular attractions in Rome, the Piazza di Spagna with views of the Spanish Steps and Bernini’s Fountain of the Ugly Boat. You can even hear the soothing sounds of the fountain flowing with the square emptied. At the right-hand corner of the Spanish Steps is the home of British Poet John Keats, who gave us the quote, "Do you not see how necessary a world of pains and troubles is to school an intelligence and make it a soul?" Seems fitting for these times.

While your road trip will have to wait, get excited watching its show via the live webcam.

Eagle Nest: Decorah, IA

Virtual Field Trips and Live Online Classes for Bay Area Kids

kids chalk

It’s tough being a parent right now. Whether you’re working from home and trying to keep your kids entertained while their school is shut down or you’re trying to figure out childcare while continuing to work, you’re probably having some major struggles right now.

We’re used to having kids home during the summer, but what can you do with all of the unexpected downtime we’re facing? Many school districts have closed for at least the next month, and if you’re like most parents, you want to make sure your children are still learning. If you’ve never homeschooled before, that can be a daunting task.

Here are some tips for keeping your kids engaged with learning at home—even when they don’t have homework to do.

Kids Are Engaged When They Know the Benefits

Depending on the age of your children, you might be able to appeal to their sense of logic. There are lots of benefits of online learning, especially when you’re out of your normal routine. If they understand why they’re learning, they’re likely to be more engaged.

Getting kids to study isn’t necessarily easy when they don’t have to. But if you remind them that continuing to learn will help them gain skills and prepare for college or next year in the classroom, they may be more motivated to engage with learning, instead of just their phones.

Build Learning into a Daily Routine

Learning is most effective when it’s part of a daily routine that you follow with your family. It helps to provide some structure to days that can easily be wasted with activities that don’t provide any value beyond passing the time. Routines will help keep everyone’s spirits up and help the family feel productive.

It’s also important to remember that learning can mean more than math, science, and reading. This could be the perfect time to start teaching your kids the life skills they’ll need as they grow. Involving your children in doing laundry, meal preparation, and other household tasks can be a great way to incorporate learning.

Kids Love Games. So Why Not Blend Learning with Fun?

Let’s face it: Getting your kids to focus on formal schooling when they’re stuck at home all day isn’t always going to work. But when it comes to games, most kids will happily play for hours. You can lean into that enthusiasm by letting your kids play games that will help them learn and build skills.

One great example of this is the game Minecraft, which is owned by Microsoft. What started out as a building game has grown to so much more, with educational opportunities abound. Microsoft is helping families out during the pandemic by making Minecraft educational packs free for a limited time. Kids can visit the International Space Station and do experiments, learn to code, or explore Mouth Olympus and Greek myths in a multiplayer mode.

Give Kids the Freedom to Take Breaks & Get Fresh Air

The good news about the pandemic is that kids can still go outside and burn off some steam, even if they can’t play with other kids. It’s important for kids to take breaks, get some fresh air, and stay active. Staying physically active will help them to learn more effectively and focus better when they are indoors.

You can even take learning outside as a family. Learn about the insects in your backyard or stargaze if you can. Take educational walks. Learning about the natural world is a fun way to switch things up and engage kids.

Encourage Kids to Share & Study What They Want to Learn

The situation we’re in isn’t normal, and it might not be fair to make your kids work on math problems if they don’t want to. Instead, consider exploring subjects they’re enthusiastic about and explore new things together. It’s much easier to engage kids in learning if they’re passionate about the topic they’re exploring.

Get creative and share learning together. Try science experiments or arts and crafts that relate to the topics they’re learning about. Getting involved with their learning will encourage their curiosity and enthusiasm and bring you closer together.

Parents have a lot to deal with right now. But the good news is that you don’t have to put too much pressure on your child’s learning. Make it fun, and the learning will follow!

Families can choose to hike, bike or even snowshoe from trail to hut and will be treated to the stunning natural beauty of the area no matter the season.

The Flagstaff Hut is a great first choice for families with little hikers. Located about two miles from the trailhead, this welcoming respite on Flagstaff Lake has European-style accommodations, boardgames and self-service kitchen. Once at the hut, daily activities include swimming, fishing, hiking and paddling. Don't forget to unplug, as huts are a cell phone-free zone for optimum reconnection.
