My kids go to a school where there is no cafeteria, so we have to pack lunches. Every. Single. Day. And while my husband is in charge of school day breakfasts, I still have the task of overseeing school lunches. As someone who thinks about feeding families for a living you it would be expected that this wouldn’t bother me so much, but packing lunches is a job I find to be extremely tedious.

Last year, when they were in 2nd and 4th grades, I decided that it was time for the boys to start packing their own lunches. There were definitely days when it didn’t go as planned, days when I threw up my hands and just packed the lunches because otherwise the boys never would have left on time, but for much of the year, they successfully pulled their own lunches together every day. And it was awesome.

Now that we have done it for a year in my house, I wanted to share the lessons that I have learned and thoughts on what I will do differently this year.

#1. Be clear on expectations, then step back.

Before the school year started, we reviewed what makes up a healthy lunch: one main, one fruit, one vegetable, one optional extra, and water. Time after time, I would notice them referencing the sheet I posted on our pantry door as they made their choices. For the most part, they did a tremendous job sticking to the guidelines.

Part way through the year, though, I noticed an occasional reluctance to add a vegetable. I reminded, cajoled, and generally got pretty nag-y about it. Surprise, surprise I made no headway with that approach. So instead we talked about it. I learned that they had grown sick of many of their favorites because they had chosen them over and over again. So we decided that we would generate a list of vegetables they would be open to having in their lunches and would work to do a better job of rotating through them. We also agreed that the first choice was to include a vegetable, but that when there wasn’t a vegetable option that appealed to them, they could have two fruits instead.

This year I will work to have a variety of pre-approved vegetables on hand, so that they don’t go onto a food jag and get sick of a go-to, and will also be more flexible with the fruit.

#2. Pre-prep for easy grabbing.

At the beginning of the year I was gung-ho about pre-chopping veggie sticks and keeping the freezer stocked with quick main dish options such as muffins (to go with cheeses or another protein), English muffin pizzas, and baked chimichangas. As the year went on, though, I started to slip and the supplies weren’t as readily available. This meant that then there’d be a morning scramble to get lunches pulled together and I’d end up in the kitchen chopping up carrots, which then would somehow turn into my packing the whole lunch.

This year, I am going to be more disciplined about stocking up the fridge and freezer each weekend so that we don’t fall back into that pattern.

#3. Leftovers are key.

My eldest is not a big sandwich fan so for years, we have struggled to find good lunch box foods for him. Quesadillas are a staple, as are bread and cheese platters. But this past year we also started doing a lot more leftovers. Some he’d heat up and put in a thermos and others he’d happily eat at room temperature.

This year, I will work to take advantage of this further. I plan to double recipes that I know he’ll want leftovers of when I cook dinner so that there is enough for lunch the next day.

#4. Teach them about leaks.

After a few leakage incidents involving yogurt, I had to make sure to teach my youngest which containers could hold liquids and which might leak. After that, the lunch boxes came home much cleaner, but despite our best efforts there were some further leaking incidents and I am still traumatized by the disgusting mess that was his lunch box.

So this year I am planning on stocking up on more leak-proof containers.

On top of the excitement and gratification I felt when I saw them packing their own lunches, there were two other unexpected benefits that I observed that I think are important to highlight. 1). The lunches came back more completely eaten. I think this was because they felt more ownership (and excitement) about what was in their lunches and because they know their stomachs better and actually packed less than I did. 2). By packing their lunches and repeatedly referring to our healthy lunch cheat sheet, they learned more about eating a balanced meal.

I’m not going to lie, by setting up our lunch packing system like this does not mean I am not completely free of the burden of school lunches. At times it can still feel like a lot of think about. But the benefits are real. They are becoming increasingly independent when it comes to lunch packing, they are learning lessons about healthy eating, and my mornings are a little less miserable. And that makes it 100% worth it.

Halloween is just around the corner which means it’s time to start stocking up for all of those trick-or-treaters. The question is, what will you give them? Candy corn or M&Ms? Depending upon where you live, the most popular Halloween candy could be very different.

CandyStore.com has created it’s annual list of the top Halloween candy in every state using data compiled from the last 12 years of sales. Check out America’s top five candies below and see where your favorites stack up.

1. Skittles

California, Florida, Minnesota and South Carolina, Hawaii and Arkansas all love tasting the rainbow. Skittles came in first in all of these states and took the top spot overall for the entire country.

2. Reese's Cups

Dear Mom of Four,

“Are they all yours?” you asked and responded with such glee when I said, “Yes—all four!”

There we were, peering off the overlook at a snoozing grizzly bear at the Central Park Zoo. I snapped a gazillion photos of my brood, trying to get eight eyes to stop squinting simultaneously. Then you rolled up in your double stroller, big kids clamoring for a spot on-board while your baby tried for a nap.

“Four! That makes me so happy!” you gushed. “I can’t wait to go without a stroller, like you.”

As it was a school holiday, we were both loaded up with four kiddos apiece plus plenty of gear, making the most of a beautiful spring day in New York City.

“Well, our stroller is waiting at the bottom of the steps,” I explained, “but it is a lot easier when the youngest can walk a bit.”

“And you live in the city?” you continued. “Do you know anyone else here with four kids?”

“We know lots with three but just a few with four. And yes, Upper East.”

“Me too!”

But when I learned that we lived 25 blocks apart—including a few hilly avenues—I shied away from exchanging contact information and pursuing a friendship. We chatted for a moment as we strolled toward the snow leopard exhibit but left it at that. In the moment, I couldn’t fathom the logistics involved in getting our families going in the same direction at the same time. That’s just too many bodies to coordinate.

I live most of my life within 10 blocks of my apartment. Realistically, if you live outside my kids’ walkable radius, it just isn’t going to happen. Our day at the zoo was a rare excursion out of the neighborhood in honor of Grandma’s visit. I connect most readily with the people I naturally do life with—families we see regularly at our local playground, playgroup, church, library or school.

Four kids in, I have my community established, and I’m guessing you do too. To be honest, I often feel like I’m not a good enough friend to those people. I’m lucky if I can see my best friend even once a month. Adding another family to the mix would dilute the time I have for those established connections.

How sad, though, that friendships must be so calculated. For better or worse, relationships take work. Like a garden, they must be weeded and watered in order to flourish. That day at the zoo, I had just bumped into a couple of other friends by the penguins. Unfortunately, that blinded me enough to mistake you for a dandelion instead of a sunflower.

While I generally don’t dwell on the past or live with many regrets, I keep replaying our interaction in my mind, wondering if I should have paused to plant another seed in my friendship garden. The work of pursuing a new mom friend would certainly be worth it if I found a new BFF.

So much of our conversation went unspoken because we just automatically understood each other. There’s no way we were going to spend the public-school holiday cooped up inside. Rather than turning our tiny apartments into madhouses with kids bouncing off the walls, we geared up and headed to the real zoo instead. I already knew what your morning looked like because I, too, had spent several hours pouring cereal, brushing teeth, tying ponytails, slathering sunscreen, packing lunch, locating shoes, convincing everyone to use the bathroom, hyping up the zoo to at least one cranky kid, and trekking back upstairs for forgotten hats.

Maybe I didn’t catch your name because, subconsciously, it felt like I already knew you.

Anyway, I think you are a rock star for parenting four kids in New York City. Stick it out. Invest in this great city and your neighborhood. Get creative with your living space. Live simply. Don’t feel like you must have it all or do it all—because “normal” gets a whole new definition when a family of six is involved. Spend time with your incredible family and dare to dig your roots into the city instead of searching for your suburban escape plan. Let’s do this together, even if we never physically cross paths again.

And if we run into each other grabbing frozen waffles at the grocery store while the kids negotiate who gets to hold the basket, counting books at the library because we’re close to the 50-item max, or stocking up on popcorn and pretzels at the Dollar Tree, I’ll know our mom friendship was meant to be.

Yours truly,

Kristin

When you’re running errands with small kids in tow, the fewer stops you have to make the better. Now you’ll have one less place to buckle and unbuckle that car seat because UPS is adding locations to CVS and Michaels stores.

After an initial test run in Texas stores, the partnership between UPS and several retailers is expanding to include 1,100 Michaels locations and thousands of CVS stores across the country. Now customers will be able to drop off and pick up UPS packages and grab prescriptions or shop for slime supplies all in one stop.

UPS is rolling out the service to nearly all 8,000 stand-alone CVS locations in the United States, as well as an unspecified number of Advance Auto Parts stores. Since Amazon returns can be made through UPS Access Points this makes it even easier to shop and make returns on Amazon.

The new locations will provide an easy avenue for returns, but more importantly an option for deliveries if customers do not want their Amazon orders left on their front porch. Of course, much like dropping off Amazon returns at Kohl’s, it will probably be impossible to leave without stocking up on some art supplies.

There’s no better gift you can give your kids than a lazy summer spent with their beloved dog. From chasing each other through the backyard sprinklers, to tandem naps on the couch, your kiddo’s season of leisure becomes priceless when shared with a pet. While summertime means more fun with Fido, it also means more indoor traffic, pet hair shedding and untidiness in the house. Give yourself the gift of a relaxing summer too, by stocking up on Swiffer products that will help you quickly clean up after your family’s adventures––so you can spend less time on housework and more time enjoying life.

Summertime and the Livin’ Is Easy––With Swiffer

Swiffer offers a swift solution to keep your house free of dust, dander, pet hair, paw prints––and a way to ditch the evidence of your kids and dogs tracking everything from glitter to mud through the living room. Each Swiffer product is designed with a unique purpose to meet the needs of the various messes that pop up in every household where kids and pets reside and play, because Swiffer refills work on hardwood, tile and vinyl floors.

Head to Sam’s Club to make summer clean-up a breeze with these Swiffer products:

Dogs and cats shed more in the summertime and Swiffer Sweeper Dry Pads have thick grooves and ridges that are perfect for picking up pet hair, dirt and dust and all those snack crumbs your kids leave in their wake.

When Fido’s outdoor escapades show up on your hardwood, tile or vinyl floor, reach for Swiffer Sweeper Wet Mopping Cloths which have powerful dirt-dissolving cleansers that lock away paw prints.

Help keep summer allergies at bay by using Swiffer Dusters to trap and lock dust, pet dander and hair while reducing allergens. Additionally, Swiffer Dusters are great to have on hand during summer months when sliding doors and windows are often left open and dust invades the home. They make it super easy to dust electronics, lamps, mantels, ceiling fans and any surface that accumulates dust in your abode.

Even when it seems like you might shop there every other day, we bet you’ve asked yourself at least once or twice, “When is the best day to shop at Target?” Some days you just can’t skip the long lines, but there are totally some days that’ll save you more money than others. So, when’s the best day for your Target run? Answer: It totally depends!

If you’re into saving money (and really, who isn’t?), the duo behind the @targetdoesitagain are Instagrammers who you NEED to follow. Jen Coleman and Laura Wiertzema are full-time IG Target shoppers. These deal-finders dished to TIME, sharing which days Target employees say are the best for finding super-sale prices.

If you’re already thinking about shopping for the holidays, Thursdays are definitely the day to make your Target run when it comes to toys—but check out below how you can save every day of the week.

Mondays: Kids' Clothes

Target

The kids never really stop growing, do they—which means stocking up on kids clothes to keep up with their growth spurts is a must. Instead of paying full price , head to Target on Mondays—at least, according to Coleman and Wiertzema. With Halloween right around the corner, check out Cat & Jack's Halloween collection. Not only is it spooky-cute, it's all under $25!

Tuesdays: Women's Clothes

Target

If you'd rather spurge on yourself while still saving big, Tuesdays are the day for women's clothing markdowns. What's hot in clothing picks for mamas right now? Target's Vital Voices collection is stylish and makes a statement!

Reportedly, you can also get pretty rad deals on pet items, too.

Wednesday: Health & Men's

Target

Wednesdays at Target bring you markdowns on health items and men's clothes. Target's new Smartly line has everyday essentials amazingly low prices to keep you stocked up on the regular. Get everything from shaving cream to hand soap—and just about anything in between.

Thursdays: ALL THE TOYS

Antsy Pants

Thursday's price reductions typically include housewares, toys (yay!) and shoes. Like we mentioned above, if you're already starting your holiday shopping, check out 2018's hottest toys, according to Target—and be sure to swing by to pick them out on a Thursday to save the most!

Fridays: Beauty

Suzy Hazelwood via Pexels

Friday is the best day to score cosmetics markdowns at Target. That means you can get your fave makeup at a lower price (cross your fingers that they'll markdown exactly what you love). Whether you need a new concealer to hide those dark circles from a long night up with your baby or a sparkly new eyeshadow for a (rare) night out, this day is all for you. Oh, and you might even score a cute, cool collab—like this sweet Target x Disney beauty line.

So what happens if you miss one of these markdown days? Don’t despair. Coleman told TIME, “If there’s something you have your eye on and you want to save money, of you can be patient, you can find it.”

Hmm. Patience? We’ll have to see about that.

Packing up the car and hitting the open road can be a perfect opportunity to bond with your family. But, organizing a successful and safe road trip requires a bit of planning ahead. Take along these tips to properly prepare for your time in the car and make your family holiday road trip a happy and safe one.

Is your car safe enough for long trips?

Make sure it is. Schedule a quick maintenance appointment with a qualified mechanic at your local garage to fix anything that looks funky before it’s time to drive. Ensure that your car is in its best condition to prevent any mishaps or breakdowns while on the road. Check your brakes, tire pressure, battery, belts, air conditioner, etc. If you’re planning on driving in a region with a hot climate or in towing a boat or trailer, get a motor oil with a higher viscosity as well.

Stock up on supplies.

Take an inventory of all items in your car just to be sure you have flares, jumper cables, a flashlight, all necessary tools and other emergency supplies you may need while on the road.

Also, make sure that you don’t run out of fuel for both your car and your bellies. Keep everyone and everything fueled by stocking up on drinks, provisions, and fuel. Pack a full fuel can in your trunk just in case you run out of it in the middle of nowhere. Getting stuck on the side of the road in an unknown region won’t just delay your road trip, but it can be dangerous as well.

Pack your items safely.

Make sure you don’t have bags that aren’t properly secured or some other loose items in your car as they can become dangerous if you stop suddenly or become involved in an accident. You shoul put those items that are the heaviest in your car and toward the center. Tie down big bags or other bulky items such as strollers, and keep windows unobstructed. Give your children smaller bags to store electronics, snacks, and other essentials within reach. Don’t forget to check your child safety seats and whether everything is installed properly. If it happens that your family’s pet is making the journey with you, secure them or their traveling kennel as well.

Keep an eye on the sky.

Weather may be different in different regions, so you should make sure that you are ready for any situation. Download an application on your smartphone to stay informed on moving storms. You can also turn the radio if you don’t have a cell phone service. Look up for NOAA radio Oceanic radio station in your state or tune into any other FM news frequency to stay up-to-date with weather alerts. This can help you avoid bad weather or give you enough time to prepare yourself and find an alternate route or a safe location where to wait until the storm passes.

Get some rest.

Make sure you get some rest before you hit the road as driving while tired is equally dangerous like driving while under alcohool influence. Studies show that driving after being awake for long hours causes your brain to function like the brain of someone with blood alcohol content of 0.05% and as the time passes this amount doubles.

Statistics show that every year drowsy drivers cause over a thousand fatal accidents. So, to avoid accidents and keep your family safe on the road, get enough rest before you begin your road trip. Also, make frequent stops during your trip to stretch your legs, refresh yourself or trade off with someone who is refreshed, talk to your kids to stay alert, etc.

Be aware of other drivers on the road.

Just like there are people who drive while tired, there are also those who drive while drunk or while under the influence of some other substance. Car accidents can happen at any moment and it is best that you are properly prepared. Take all necessary documentation with you as well as your insurance card, and ask your lawyer what to do and how to behave if an accident still occurs.
