Every kid wants to know what the Wild West was really like. You can let yours experience it for themselves on your next family vacation. Cheyenne is filled with opportunities to transport your crew back in time to the days when cowboys and girls frolicked on the wide-open frontier. From feeding bison, to horseback adventures and gunslinger shows, a trip to Cheyenne is guaranteed to ignite your young buckaroos’ imaginations and have them shouting, “Yee Haw!”, all the way home. Read on for our guide to Wyoming’s capital city Y’all.

STAY

Finding the perfect outpost for your Cheyenne adventures is key to and epic western experience. There is no better place for your posse than Little America. This resort features a golf course, pool and cozy suites that make you feel at home.

Set down your lasso and pick up your putter for a round of nine holes on Little America’s executive golf course. Surrounded by 80-acres of landscaped terrain, you get your game on while taking in the local wildlife. When you are done, head to the clubhouse and take a break.

While you’ll surely want to explore Cheyenne’s food scene, Little America has several restaurant options on site. Hathaway’s Restaurant is considered one of Cheyenne’s premier restaurants and serves up a popular lunch buffet, dinner and Sunday Brunch with an elegant approach to classic western comfort foods. Parents can relax in Hathaway’s lounge and enjoy an evening cocktail. For a quick bite and coffee, Carol’s Cafe serves up pastries and 75 cent ice cream cones.

When you aren’t golfing, swimming or dining, you can relax in your beautifully appointed suite. The rooms at Little America are known for being extremely spacious and extra comfortable. There’s more than enough room for the whole family to get comfortable. Located on a campus-like setting, your family isn’t likely to experience cabin fever, even during an extended stay.

PLAY

Cowboy & Cowgirl Up!
The first thing you need to do when you hit Cheyenne is head to the iconic The Wrangler store. It’s been around since 1982 selling ranch and western wear. Here you’ll not only find clothing you’ll love, but you can pick your own cowboy or cowgirl hat from their skylit hat room with its nearly 500 hats! Once you know which one you want, you can have it shaped and fit to your head. Now you are truly ready for adventure.

Go to the Ranch
There are so many adventures to be had in Cheyenne, it’s challenging to know where to start. We suggest kicking off your frontier adventure with a trip to Terry Bison Ranch. The Ranch offers families a variety of unforgettable adventures. We suggest hopping on their train for a Bison Train Tour that takes you around the ranch. Your trip includes a chance to see ostriches, camels, and horses. The highlight is a chance to hand-feed bison! It’s likely the closest you’ll ever get to these amazing beasts.

When you are done with the tour, go for a a horseback or pony ride. Or, hop on an ATV for a motorized adventure. The ranch also has a fishing post and a shop with memorabilia that you can purchase. Then grab a bite at the Tombstone cafe.

Outdoor Adventures.
There are so many places to explore in Cheyenne. Scenic hikes are abundantNearby, Gowdy State Park has miles and miles of beautiful trail and three reservoirs that are perfect for fishing and boating. The Vedauwoo Recreation Area  is home to trails that wander through towering rock formations that draw climbers and campers from around the nation. So strap on your hiking boots or grab your mountain bikes and get ready for incredible outdoor adventures.

While you are exploring the outdoors, don’t forget to checkout some of the area’s coolest sites, like the Lincoln Highway Monument (a giant head of Lincoln) which marks what was once the highest point of the Lincoln Highway. And did you know that there is a pyramid in Wyoming? Only a short distance away, you can see the Ames Brothers Pyramid which stands on a treeless plateau as a reminder of the Ames Brothers’ sordid tale as both a Union Pacific’s president and a corrupt congressman. It’s an exciting story and awesome site.

Catch a Show
From gunslingers to melodramas, there’s no shortage of family-friendly entertainment. But we suggest getting your first dose of fun on the local Trolley Tour where you can learn all about the history of Cheyenne. The wild west tours are sure to hold even your youngest family members’ attention. With guides who know how to tell a tale they way they did sitting around a campfire after a long day on the frontier.

It wouldn’t be the Wild West without a gunslinger shoot out! And you can see one every day in downtown Cheyenne. Your hole family will be on the edge of their seats as they watch the small battles go down, but the best part of the whole event is the very serious lesson on gun safety they outlaws and lawmen give prior to each show. They speak specifically to the kiddos in the audience.

For a whole lot of family fun, head to the Historic Atlas Theater where you can catch a variety of shows year-round. From melodramas to classics like Beauty & the Beast. There’s something to see year-round.

EAT
Get ready to fill your bellies with some serious western fare while you’re in Cheyenne because the eatin’s good! Ok, so not all of the food is western focused, but all of the eateries are amazing. We suggest starting your day at the beloved Tortilla Factory with a filling breakfast burrito made with hand-made tortillas. When lunch rolls around, you want to head over to the Bunkhouse where you can feast on swinging sirloins (RMO), sandwiches, 1855 burgers! The menu items are traditional and taste like home-cookin.

For an upscale meal, you’ll want to heat to the Metropolitan where you can order from menu items like Ahi Sashimi, the Met Filet, and a stuffed portabella mushroom burger. Another incredible dinner options is the Rib & Chop House where you can dine on fried green tomatoes, grilled oysters, and your kids will love the chicken and pasta dishes. If you find you need a little break from traditional menu items, head to Napoli’s Italian restaurant where you will find lots of pasta dishes and home-made bread! You will not be disappointed!

The wild west was a time of great adventure on the wide-open frontier. There’s no better way to teach your young’uns about the history of America, and what it was really like as our great country was coming to be what it is today, than by taking them to where the old lifestyle and it’s traditions are being preserved and remembered daily. A vacation to Cheyenne is sure to leave its impression on your whole family, while giving you a family adventure of a lifetime.

From the grand (Nats stadium, anyone?) to an intimate restaurant room, you won’t want a shower at one of these local destinations to end. But don’t worry, with baby on the way the party is just getting started.

Photo: Punchbowl Social

For the mom that’s a big kid at heart…
The mom-to-be may not be able to sip on one of Punchbowl Social’s signature and infamous cocktails, but delish imbibes are just the tip of the fun iceberg at this new swanky gastropub. Old-school games like bowling, shuffleboard, Ping-Pong and private karaoke rooms, meld with a modern design that blends mountain lodge, Victorian, industrial and mid-century modern. In other words, this baby shower is an Instagramers dream! Idea for party favors: A custom CD loaded with top hits from baby’s birth year.

For the mom who’s a history buff…
Soak in all of the history at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant, just steps from the mansion that George Washington built himself in the 1700s. Many rooms (or the entire restaurant) are available for parties up to 260 people. Ask about guided tours of the gardens or see the rarely visited Mansion basement for a one-of-a-kind baby shower. For the mom who wants to be Kate Middleton for a day…
Built in 1926, the Glenview Mansion is a historic and picturesque venue to celebrate the arrival of a little prince or princess. For big parties (up to 200), the Mansion and Formal Gardens are hired for the entire day on weekends. But if the royal party is on the smaller side, consider a shower during the weekday when individual rooms are available. The best part is you can choose any caterer you want! Idea for party favors: A sparkly dress-up tiara, so guests can show who’s boss (er, queen) at home.

For the mom who never misses a baseball game…
If mommy-to-be already has a Nationals jersey in size Infant for her lil’ slugger, then take the party to the ballgame. How cool would it be to open presents on the field, or do a Q&A with mom in the press conference room? Be sure to ask about extras—behind the scene tours, mascot appearances or a red carpet entrance. Caterers are also onsite whether you want to munch on ballpark food or from the five-star menu. Idea for party favors: Boxes of Cracker Jacks, of course.

Choose from over 600 pieces in their studio. Finished work is available for pickup in a week. Feel free to bring snacks and cake but be sure to let them know first. For the mom who brunches…
This restaurant sits atop an actual old tollhouse that was last used in the 1900s! Enjoy brunch surrounded by antiques collected by the owner herself, an actual Mrs. K. Skip the mimosas, but still indulge in omelets made-to-order, Belgian waffles, and heavenly pastries and danishes. Private rooms cannot be reserved for Sunday Brunch at Mrs. K’s, so this spot is perfect for smaller showers. If you still want a private space (like a room or the patio), they are available any other time during the week. Based on the age-old notion of gathering around the fire to share good food with friends and family, Campfire has a hospitable vibe and even invites kids to play and relax in the teepee on their patio. They'll feel like they're camping right in the city with water poured from a canteen into metal mugs. Grown-ups will be pleased to find artisanal cocktails including a variety of fiery combos. The kids' menu is a simplified version of the regular menu, but most kids will opt for the gooey grilled cheese. Everyone will delight in the desserts, including, you guessed it, s’mores.

After ordering, little surfers can run to play in the dune buggy (right in the middle of the restaurant). More still, the pinball machines are tons of fun. You like hearing the conductor shout as the engine chugs slowly back in time, the kids like the wild west cowboys and robbers, everyone digs the fantastic scenery, and one thing is certain—there’s something about trains. Whatever it is, families can have a full day of exploration and excitement while riding the rails. Read on to discover our picks for the country’s most dazzling train rides for kids.

The Coaster - California

Chad McDonald via Flickr

The COASTER is a commuter train that runs north and south along the San Diego County coast from the Santa Fe Depot in downtown to Oceanside. Plan to stop in one of the coastal communities and pack a picnic to enjoy at the beach. Or, just enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean along the route.

Begin by planning a trip by checking out the COASTER's online schedule. It should be noted that fares vary from start-to-end zone. For example, an adult round-trip fare from downtown San Diego to Oceanside (through 3 zones) is $11. Kids 5 and under ride free.

Cape Cod Central Railroad - Massachusetts

You'll see oceanfront trails, marshes, cranberry bogs, sweet little towns and other stuff you can't see from the road when you ride the rails on the Cape Cod Central Railroad. There are special events throughout the year for families, such as the Easter train, the Polar Express and the Sunday brunch train.

Once you've checked out all the buildings that make up the National Landmark Museum, hop aboard the train for a 90-minute train ride towards the Ruth mining district near Ely, Nevada. You and your crew can choose between the open-air car, the coach, or the caboose (check out the details here) Regulars rides depart the station on a daily basis, but there are seasonal and themed rides as well: the Pony Express ride, the Rockin’ & Rollin’ Geology Train, the Star Train, the Ghost Train among others.

The Heber Creeper - Utah

courtesy Heber Valley Chamber of Commerce

The historic Heber Valley Railroad calls the idyllic hamlet of Heber Valley, Utah, home. The train runs along the world-famous Provo river and offers impressive views of Mt. Timpanogos. Opt for a lazy ride along the river, or choose between adventure packages: Reins 'n’ Trains, Raft 'n' Rails and the Wilderness Zip Line. The special train events are also popular, offering themed rides like Dinosaur Days, Wizard’s Train, Wild West Days, the Hobo Train and of course, the North Pole Express. Dubbed the “Heber Creeper,” folklore claims the train had to “creep” along the treacherous pass through Provo Canyon, lending the locomotive its now legendary moniker.

Insider Tip: When catching a ride on the Creeper, be on the lookout for Black Jack Raven and the Soldier Hollow Gang, they may be lurking in the trees awaiting your arrival!

Pinkies Up! Holiday Tea Times in San Diego

Looking for a road trip that fits the bill for both the kids and the grown-ups? Set your sights on the Santa Ynez Valley! Just a two hour drive from Los Angeles and four hours south of San Francisco, the Santa Ynez Valley offers over 100 wineries, a super-cool spot where you can feed ostriches and loads of options for family exploration. We’ve planned your next California vacay for you—what are you waiting for?

Santa Ynez Valley

The Santa Ynez Valley is made up of six communities—rural Ballard, bustling Buellton, western-inspired Los Alamos, arts and wine hub Los Olivos, Danish-charmer Solvang and the quaint town of Santa Ynez. Each has such a different feel that you’ll want to plan some time to explore them all. The close proximity of these six communities makes them easy to access wherever you make your home base.

What to Do

There’s no shortage of activities to keep you busy in the Santa Ynez Valley. Right off 101 on your way to Solvang is the kid-favorite, OstrichLand. Here you can pay a buck (plus admission fee of $5/adult and $2/kid 12 and under) to get the opportunity to feed the ostrich and emu. It will definitely be a trip highlight to get up close to these massive creatures!

Another fun spot to stop for some animal time is Quicksilver Miniature Horse Ranch. Located between Ballard and Solvang, the ranch offers free visits with these adorable animals (although no feeding or petting allowed). After your visit, swing by the Claremont Lavender Farm, which is just a few minutes away. You can walk through the fragrant fields, spread out a picnic at their outdoor tables and purchase lavender-scented wares from the gift shop.

If ziplining over vineyards is your jam, head to Santa Margarita and book your spot at Margarita Adventures. You’ll get to hook up and zip down six ziplines on their course that shows you some of the gorgeous hillsides of Central California. Kids weighing 30-100 pounds can fly tandem which is a great way to get the little ones interested. Soon they’ll be adding on a wildlife hummer tour that will show you native animal habitats up close.

See the valley from the back of a horse when you book a horseback ride with KAP Land & Cattle. These private tours take groups of all experience levels out on the historic Fess Parker Ranch and Vineyard property, over the hills and through the vineyards. You can even combine your ride with a picnic from The Bear and Star under the trees or a wine tasting for a truly Santa Ynez Valley experience.

To explore more of the beauty of this area, pack a picnic and head to Nojoqui Falls Park. Here you can hike the shaded and easy trail to the falls and then enjoy lunch at the tables when you return. (Note: you won’t be able to get all the way to the falls due to recent mudslides but the area is still very beautiful).

You’ll feel like you’ve traveled to Europe when you enter the town of Solvang and see the streets lined with windmills. Scandinavian culture permeates the restaurants and shops here. Stop at the Hans Christian Andersen Museum and learn about the famous fairy tale writer. Another fun museum to add to your itinerary is the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum where you can tour the collection that dates back to 1910. When you are done exploring the town, satisfy your sweet tooth with pastries from Olsen’s Danish Village Pastries and fudge from Old Danish Fudge Kitchen.

There is no shortage of wineries and tasting rooms in the Santa Ynez Valley and many are surprisingly family-friendly. Fess Parker Ranch and Vineyard has an expansive grassy areas for the kids to explore while parents enjoy their tastings. Another spot where kids are welcome is Dierberg and Star Lane Tasting Room. Kids will love looking for lizards in the garden area and playing bocce ball on the lawn.

Where to Eat

The relaxed vibe in Santa Ynez Valley means that the vast majority of eateries are totally kid-friendly. CHOMP in Solvang is a local favorite where you can get traditional diner fare like burgers and shakes with a modern interpretation. Almost the whole menu is locally-sourced and the sliders, sweet potato fries and pulled pork sandwiches are kid faves. The fish tacos with chipotle sauce are a fresh, non-burger option and the Oreo milkshake is a must to finish off your meal. The outdoor dining area is a great option for rowdy toddlers.

Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. is another dining spot where families with kids congregate. Their Buellton taproom and brewing facility has a huge outdoor dining area (that is actually being expanded to be even bigger!) where kids can play cornhole, bocce ball and a giant game of Jenga. Dogs are even welcome to join you outside. The menu is full of kid favorites like BBQ chicken wings, giant soft pretzels and loaded nachos. Come for Sunday brunch and you can try the bananas foster French toast or huevos rancheros. Figueroa has four other locations, including one in nearby Los Olivos.

Where to Stay

If up-scale glamping sounds right up your alley then reserve a cottage, safari tent or Airstream at Flying Flags RV Resort and Campground. Centrally located right off the 101 in Buellton, Flying Flags is the perfect spot for your next family road trip. If you choose a cottage with loft, you’ll be able to sleep up to six people in the loft, master bedroom and pull-out couch. Cottages include a full kitchen with oven and fridge, plus a gas BBQ on your deck for grilling. If you don’t feel like cooking, head over to the Campfire Cafe—the resort’s on-site restaurant or grab some snacks and a bottle of wine from the General Store.

In addition to the various glamping options, the resort has two pools, hot tubs, a splash park and a playground. Enjoy some time by the community campfire or play a game of pool or foosball to get out of the sun. Those looking for more camping and less “glamping” can opt for a camping spot or bring their RV and set up there.

The Scoop

With its location right off the 101, the Santa Ynez Valley is an ideal option for families travelling from either Los Angeles or Northern California. Check out Visit Santa Ynez Valley for more information on what to do and see in the area. It’s your one-stop shop to find out about all the special seasonal activities that bring visitors to the area.

The wide variety of pizza options offered is almost as shocking as how incredibly good they are. The Meatball + Chevre Pizza($14) tastes a whole lot like a traditional pie. The kids are sure to love it and you are bound to wonder if the cheese isn’t actually cheese made from dairy. The answer is, “no”! The cheese is nut-based and made in-house as is their three-day dough, which makes incredible crust—not too thick and not too thin.

It’s hard to believe you can get full-flavored, creamy ice cream with out even a dash of milk in it, but Virtuous delivers in the frozen dessert department. Choose from a list of options that includes Pumpkin Pie + Pecan, Hawaiian Vanilla, Mint+ Dark Chocolate, Lavender + Lemon, Double Chocolate + Salted Caramel, and our favorite: Turmeric + Black Pepper. That’s right! Turmeric + Black pepper makes for a beautiful yellow scoop that is surprisingly sweet and sure to bring smiles.
