The sweltering temps of long sunny days call for a little ice, ice, baby. Keep your kids busy with any number of awesome and icy adventures, from excavating a LEGO mini-fig to stacking cool and colorful cubes. Wander through our flipbook below to find nine awesome ways to help keep it chill.

Slippery Stackers

We think these ice bricks spotted over at Play at Home Mom are pretty sweet. You can freeze almost any size and shape of colored ice (depending on your freezer space, then pull ‘em out and let your kids play away. As the ice melts it becomes slippery and harder to stack, which just adds to the fun. Head over to Play at Home Mom for more ideas on how to use these cool building blocks.

This summer, make the Olympics a cultural celebration; spend an afternoon working on a colorful and fun craft that puts the spotlight on one of Brazil’s most iconic events—Carnival. We’ve gathered the supplies to make a Brazilian headdress, which your budding Samba school tykes can wear during the opening ceremonies on August 5. Scroll down for the entire tutorial and remember—bigger and brighter is always better!

What You’ll Need

Costume Masks  – we used these

Feathers – we used these

Gemstones – we used these

Paint – any tempera or acrylic with work

Glitter Glue – we used this in red

Hot Glue Gun or Elmer’s Glue

Spray Glitter (optional)

Paint the Mask

Get your kids set up with the materials and let them paint away. If they want to add designs with paint, be sure to wait until each coat is dry before beginning another

Decorate the Mask

Step One
Using either a hot glue gun (parental supervision is required) or Elmer’s glue, let your crafters embellish their headdresses with colorful jewels. During Carnival, Samba schools try to outshine each other with dazzling displays, so encourage your kids to add as much as they want!

Step Two
If you have glitter glue, this is the time to use it, either around the gemstones or as the glue for the gemstones—it’s up to your kids and their imaginations!

Step Three
Adding feathers can be tricky. Parents should help (or supervise older kids) with the hot glue gun. If you don’t have one, use tape to fasten the feathers to the back of the mask. Go with one color or make a colorful display with as many different feathers as possible. Afterwards, spray the feathers with spray glitter if you have it on hand.

Wear the Mask

After everything dries, it’s time to shake a tail feather.

Try it as a mask.

Then, try it as a headdress!

Not sure how to spend your next weekend in San Diego? If you’re looking for some family fun that’s just off the beaten path, spend a day at the famous Kobey’s Swap Meet. Swap meets are a fun way to treasure hunt with your cuties, and a great chance to teach about recycling, reusing and handling money (if they are old enough), all while feeling the thrill of a scavenger hunt and the score of a deal.

Kobey’s Swap Meet
Kobey’s is the ultimate stop for swap meet swag. It has many pint-sized bargain-hunting treasures. Scour the tables and bins for LEGO, Polly Pocket dolls and accessories, Barbies and more. There are both swap meet and garage-sale style booths for your little ones to explore. Set an amount they can spend (let them learn to budget), then send the little pirates off to scour the terrain for their bountiful loot (with mom or dad’s supervision, of course).

Sweet Treats
If the little swashbucklers need a bite to eat, there are lots of places to take a bit. Traditional hamburgers and hot dogs are available (a little on the expensive and greasy side). But we recommend saving the money and appetites for the other treats. Popcorn is a hit with the pint-sized type and snow cones are big and fun to eat (especially on hot summer days). There’s also a mini-donut stand where kids can watch them make the sweet treats.

Savvy Swap Meet Tips

  • Sunblock is key. Even on overcast days, be prepared to spray and wear a hate. Brining a bottle of water is also recommended.
  • Vendors don’t take credit cards. So bring cash. Smaller bills will be appreciated.
  • Bring your own canvas bag to stash all your goodies.
  • While the swap meet is open all weekend, Sunday is the best day to score treasures.
  • Go online and print a coupon for $1 off adult admission.
  • You can rent a single stroller ($6) or a double cool cart ($7) to wheel your little munchkins around.
  • The bathrooms are located at the back of the meet near the food stand. While they are porta-potties, there is an attendant on duty and a place to wash hands.
  • Parking is free!

Hours: Fri. – Sun., 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Cost: Fri.: $1/Adults; Sat. & Sun., $2/Adults; Free/Kids under 11

For all you animal lovers out there, we have found your puuurrrrrfect new hangout. Part neighborhood café, part cozy cat haven, Cat Town Café opened this past October in downtown Oakland as a place for locals to sip fresh coffee, nibble on sweet treats and most importantly, spend time with beautiful, cuddly cats, all of whom are available for adoption.

The Backstory
“Cat crazy” business partners Ann Dunn and Adam Myatt opened Cat Town Café with one goal in mind, to find fur-ever homes for cats that are normally overlooked by local animal rescue organizations. Through a partnership with Oakland Animal Services, the dedicated volunteers of Cat Town have pulled nearly 70 cats since October, nearly all of whom have been adopted through visits to the Café. There’s no pressure during your visit, though. Most of the visitors coming through the Café’s doors are there to grab a quick bite and spend time with some adorable cats who are soaking up the attention.

Kiddie Nibble
At Cat Town Café, the cats are arguably the main attraction. In one room, you’ll find the café, which is minimal but has enough options to keep tiny tummies satisfied. There’s a selection of locally-sourced bagels, muffins, scones and cookies, as well as pour-over coffee, tea and hot chocolate. The tables are sparse, as most visitors spend their time munching on treats while gazing at the cats through the large windows facing the adjoining “Cat Zone.”

Know Before You Go
Cat Town loves their young visitors, and even boasts a kid-friendly table in the Cat Zone as a tiny refuge. But they also pride themselves on being a calm sanctuary for the cats, so adult supervision is required. The Café is open Wednesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the Cat Zone is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. You’re welcome to visit the café anytime, but visits to the cat zone are booked on an hourly basis and your best bet is to make a reservation online ahead of time. A $10 donation guarantees your space online, or you can try walking-in for free, but you might end up spending a good chunk of your afternoon waiting for admission. Unless your child is strapped to your chest or in a stroller, plan on reserving a spot for them as well. The Cat Zone is open and airy and with 14 people max, even the youngest cat-lovers are accounted for to make sure that both the cats, and their visitors, feel right at home.

Guilty of throwing the iPad in front of your kiddos to shoot off that email to your colleague or finish whipping up dinner? Us too. If you really want some extra time to yourself to run errands, return calls, or get a manicure (gasp!), while taking advantage of your child’s love for everything iPad related, you’ll want to check out the amazing app, Virtual Babysitter, or V-Sit as it’s known on the playground.

Since it’s launch in February, V-Sit has had over 20 million downloads from the app store from parents seeking on-the-fly supervision for their kids. Simply download the app on your iPad or Tablet and fill out a short questionnaire (child’s name, age, and interests). V-Sit will then match you to one of their pre-screened sitters who are virtually ready to care for your kids from the comfort of their own home using nothing but their iPad. Yup, that means saying goodbye to straightening up or stocking up the snack cabinet for sitters

Once you’re registered, all you have to do is select the date and period of time you want your virtual sitter, flip on the iPad for your kid (let’s be honest — it’s probably already powered up), and then hallelujah — you can jet (or dance) out of the house knowing that your kids are in safe hands.

Want to hear more about V-Sit? Click here for all the details and then use coupon code REDTRI to score $25 off your first booking.
