Let’s face—periods aren’t going anywhere. This was something I realized as I laid in bed one evening with my period and caught sight of the wings from my pad. Although this extra layer offered the protection I needed during that time of the month, this non-discreet quality did not seem very modern in this day in
age and annoyed me. “Why can’t we have more stylish yet functional protection?” I thought to myself. This moment opened my eyes to the lack of modern menstrual products for young girls and women.

As a mother, I know how important it is to have a menstrual care option that is safe, easy to use and helps celebrate a young girl’s growth. Discussing menstruation as a monumental rite-of-passage and making her first-period experience as positive as possible influences how a young girl views menstruation. While this conversation is an important introduction to puberty, the topic still remains taboo for many families. After helping my own daughter navigate the ups and downs of her first period, I was disappointed with the lack of options to provide her and decided enough was enough.

In August 2015, I figured we’d destigmatize and eliminate the negativity surrounding the monthly experience, and the rest is history. The notion of stylish and functional period protection, although an initial thought, turned into hundreds of samples to see what worked. Who knew that millions of other women felt the same way? Samples turned into PantyProp, and PantyProp into Ruby Love—a period protection brand offering leak-proof apparel that equips young girls and women with the tools they need to manage their period while destigmatizing menstruation so that period days can be just like any other day.

With my daughter and a world of prepubescent young ladies to follow, I knew that it was also important to deliver a positive message and influence surrounding periods. This inspired our mission and led to the launch of our First Period Kit that is filled with informative, hygienic and fun items that celebrate a girl’s growth through puberty and helps prepare for her first period. The whole idea is to normalize periods, making it less embarrassing and more of an accepted, and even celebrated, the rite of passage that all girls go through while encouraging families to have conversations about puberty in a fun way.

It is our hope that breaking down menstrual taboos allows families to have open dialogues about puberty, which will help bring them closer together while empowering young girls. Whether it be through education, hosting a ‘period party’ for your daughter, openly talking about puberty, or exploring the now growing number of period protection alternatives, we can accomplish that together. Regular menstrual periods in the years between puberty and menopause are a sign that your body is working normally, and there is nothing negative about that!

Crystal Etienne is a wife, businesswoman, and mother to two amazing kids. As Founder & CEO of Ruby Love, Crystal seeks to continue revolutionizing the Femtech industry with the unifying message that periods should never stop women from doing, being and going.

On stage, JoJo Siwa sings about being a kid in a candy store, but when she is at home, she literally is surrounded by candy. In her YouTube vlog, the 16-year-old brought fans on a tour of her newly redecorated bedroom. The sugary sweet room looks like something out of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

This rainbow space is just one of many over-the-top rooms in the California mansion she and her family moved into at the end of 2019. In the video, Siwa dressed up like Wonka himself for the tour, donning a purple suit, white gloves and goggles alongside her signature bow.

“This house is literally our dream house,” Siwa said, “I wanted to redo my bedroom but I was like, ‘Hmm, what do I want to do?’ Then I got the idea to turn my bedroom into a complete candy room … Oh my gosh, I’m so excited!”

JoJo Siwa Bedroom

The room is now filled with  4,000 pounds of candy. Each of her doors dsiplays her signature logo. The walls are a swirl of colors and motion. Her dresser is covered in a gumball print and the drawers are even filled with a layer of actual sprinkles alongside the bows she wears every day.

Her bed’s headboard is made from clear tubes (like you’d find in a candy store) filled with all types of colorful candies from Skittles, to gumballs, to Starburst. Plus, there is a gear on the wall that when turned, releases the candy.

This Teen’s Guide to Social Media Is a Must-Have for Parents

Military kids learn to be resilient at an early age. Children who have a deployed parent may experience extra stress and anxiety. Thirteen-year-old Jayden Kirkpatrick, the son of a Marine Corps veteran, knew how it felt when his father was deployed so he wanted to help other military kids.

When Jayden heard about the Daddy Doll Challenge he knew that he wanted to raise money to give back and help other children. Jayden’s first Daddy Doll was gifted to him on his first Christmas while his father was deployed to Iraq. While surrounded by family in Inidana on Christmas morning, there was a knock on the door. A box was delivered to Jayden containing his doll with a speaker. The message that played was Jayden’s dad saing, “I love you, Jayden.” Since then Jayden and his brother have had three Daddy Dolls.

People from the community and local businesses have donated to Jayden, as well as many others from out of state. So far he has raised enough money to pay for 105 dolls and Daddy Dolls is matching his donation.

Worried about keeping your kids healthy? Not being dirty enough could be the problem. New research shows excessive hygiene might lead to the increase of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

A study conducted by the Institute of Environmental Biotechnology at TU Graz has found that highly controlled spaces which are kept excessively clean have an increased rate of antibiotic resistance in microbes. It also found that spaces which were excessively clean were prone to decreased microbial diversity.

photo: Nicole De Khors via Burst

The researchers compared highly clean environments, like hospital intensive care units, with regular environments, like people’s homes, which are affected by the surrounding environment.

“In environments with strong microbial control in the intensive care unit and industrially used clean rooms, there are increasing antibiotic resistances which show a high potential for combining with pathogens,” Alexander Mahnert, director of studies at the Institute of Environmental Biotechnology of TU Graz, who is currently conducting research at the Medical University of Graz, said in a statement.

The researchers highlighted certain steps to maintaining and improving microbial diversity, which in turn lessens antibiotic resistance. Regular airing of the space, houseplants and the reduction of antibacterial cleaning agents were among the things the team suggested.

When you go somewhere with natural beauty, you want to stay where you can soak in the beauty of your surroundings. Barton Creek Resort & Spa recently reopened its doors after an extensive renovation; from the modern rustic architecture and impressive artwork to the lobby and porch that open up to hill country, the resort’s mission to bring the outdoors in is fully visualized. We got a sneak peek at the updated golf and spa resort located in the rolling hills above Austin, TX and can report back that it’s a perfect getaway spot for families. Discover our top three reasons why below.

Reason #1: Hill Country Beauty

Gabby Cullen

Barton Creek Resort & Spa is nestled in the Texas Hill Country, and the natural beauty surrounding the resort is stunning. Whether you play a round of golf, lounge at the pool, enjoy the great outdoors (the resort has plans to open a new nature trail in 2020) or relax on the lawn, you’ll be surrounded by the beauty of rolling hills. Lady Bird Lawn, located at the heart of the resort, offers chairs, fire pits and lawn games. Families can play, relax, make s’mores as the sun sets and enjoy live music as part of the Barton Creek Live (summer only) music series. There are three pools (the infinity-edge pool is only for adults) and a hot tub with impressive views that are open to all guests, and there’s a rooftop pool for spa guests ($50 for a day pass).

As for golfing, Barton Creek Resort & Spa is recognized as one of the best golf resorts in the Southwest. There are four courses (one is located off-property), and two of them, Fazio Foothills and Fazio Canyon, have been newly renovated along with the hotel. Both are designed to play up to the beauty of the surrounding hills.

Reason #2: Incredible Food

Gabby Cullen

Texans take their food seriously, and Barton Creek Resort & Spa is no exception. There are seven dining spots at the resort, and we were able to experience four. You’ll find an impressive breakfast buffet at Texas Spice, which includes overnight oats, fresh fruit, eggs, bagels and more. There’s also an a la carte menu with classic offerings like Texas Griddle Cakes and a migas bowl. Another perk of Texas Spice is that kids 12 & under eat for free.

For midday snacks or an easy dinner after a long day outdoors, Crenshaw’s pub-style dining is the best bet. Choose from fresh appetizers like hummus and veggies, and follow it with an impressive entree like the steak and fries or the redfish po’boy. The kid's menu offers easy options like PB&J, grilled cheese and chicken fingers. For adults, there’s also a list of fun cocktails, and the elevated margarita was a favorite.

Nopales is a fun spot for lunch before or after swimming—the patio opens up directly into the pool area. The menu is impressive: the nacho plate will feed the whole family, the empanadas are vegan (there are several other vegan options on the menu) and the shrimp ceviche has just enough spice. Kids will enjoy churros as a dessert option.

The real dining experience at Barton Creek, however, is the Blind Salamander. From windows that showcase the surrounding hills to the coastal-inspired decor, the restaurant itself is impressive. The menu offers dishes like oysters on the half shell, blackened Texas Gulf redfish, beef tenderloin among nightly specials. A favorite with our entire group was the homemade mac ‘n’ cheese. The creamy texture was a hit with the kids, and the rich flavor satisfied adult palates.

For a quick bite, snack or caffeine fix, head to Velvet Joe’s. You’ll find treats from Dylan’s Candy Bar, healthy food bars, a full coffee bar and other fun items.

Reason #3: Location, Location, Location

Gabby Cullen

Barton Creek Resort & Spa is about 20 minutes from downtown Austin. If you want to explore Texas’ capital city, you’ll be able to do so for a full day before coming back to Barton Creek to relax by the fire. It’s also close to the Barton Creek Greenbelt, which offers miles of hiking trails, waterfalls and the beauty of the hill country. If you want to explore Fredericksburg or go to Enchanted Rock, Barton Creek Resort & Spa is only a 40-minute drive. Fancy a day on the lake? Lake Travis is only 18 miles away.

The resort is a 4-hour drive from Dallas, 1.5 hours away from San Antonio and just under three hours away from Houston.

Rates start at $277 per night

Mom Aijia was diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum according to PEOPLE and she is just beginning to feel better. “The last four months were not my best season. We’ve had so much help from family and friends, and my mom lives next door,” says Aijia, who’s also a singer. “It’s been a strange thing for me to have music coming out and all these beautiful things on social media, but I’m secretly in the bathroom puking my guts out.”

Big sis Louisiana K is already excited about gaining a sister. “She’s getting it! She’ll start poking at my belly, waiting for the baby to come,” Aijia told PEOPLE. “She’ll be the perfect sister.”

As for dad, he is more than excited over the notion that he will be surrounded by nothing but girls. “Growing up, I was super jock and very rough-and-tumble. My mom used to joke and say, ‘You’re going to have all girls!’ ” he says. “My mom passed away 10 years ago, so I’m sure that she has her hand in making sure that [happened].”
