Anyone who’s ever loved an animal knows just how special the bond between person and pet can be. The long walks in the park, the endless games of fetch and the sweet, curled-up cuddles after a long day make up some of life’s best memories for both people and their pets.

If you have an animal lover in your family, you’ll be thrilled to hear about the work that Annenberg PetSpace is doing across Southern California. Annenberg PetSpace is focused on the benefits that animals and people receive from loving and caring for each other and is a unique community space that includes an education center, a leadership institute, and, best of all for people who are looking to add a new (four-legged) family member, an adoption center.

Annenberg PetSpace is open to the public and committed to fostering a love of animals in the next generation. On a visit, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a Pet Encounter with an adoptable animal, explore the Critter Corner and enjoy a behind-the-scenes view of how pets are received and prepared for adoption. Interested in adding to your family? Annenberg PetSpace lets you schedule an appointment for a meet-and-greet with a potential pet and gives the option to take them home the same day!

If you’re interested in adding someone special to your family, check out these friendly pets who are currently living at Annenberg PetSpace as they wait for their forever home:

Heidi

Heidi is two years old and 62 lbs of bouncy, full-of-life fun. With her perky ears and soft tan and black fur, she’s a picture-perfect pup who’s looking for a family to call her own. Heidi can be shy when she meets new people for the first time but loves to play and cuddle once she’s gotten to know you!

Zorro

Zorro is the perfect mid-sized pup for an experienced pet parent who’s ready to build a loving, trusting relationship with a dog who has lots of love to give! Zorro had a leg injury, received surgery and is working hard to regain his strength in physical therapy. At just two years old, this playful guy is ready for a lifetime full of love!

Clifford

Clifford might not be quite as big or quite as red as the Big Red Dog, but he’s got a heart just as sweet and can’t wait to be a part of a family! Clifford can be a little nervous meeting new people (who isn’t?), but it doesn’t take much to get his tail wagging.

Cheesy Mac

Cheesy Mac is a laid-back kitty who likes things quiet and relaxed, but who gets playful quickly when someone brings out his favorite toys. Cheesy Mac is looking for a home where he can snuggle up and relax in calm and tranquility with a helpful human there to make sure he gets all the snuggles he needs!

Sadie

Sadie is a four-year-old pup who is ready for a loving, trusting family. She's timid and takes a little while to trust people, but once you get to know this 76-pound doggo she's sure to be a furever friend.

If your family is looking for a new pet and wants to explore options other than dogs or cats, a visit to the Annenberg PetSpace Critter Corner is a must-do! The Critter Corner, home to a variety of small animals, is designed to help potential families learn about all the pet options available to them and determine what sort of animal might be the best fit for their family!

With a playful box turtle, a California kingsnake, a cockatiel, a domestic rabbit, a guinea pig, a hamster and a leopard gecko, the Annenberg PetSpace Critter Corner has something for everyone. As you move through the Critter Corner you’ll have a chance to learn about what sort of care each animal needs, what makes them feel happy and fulfilled and what you’ll need to do if you want to bring one into their home.

This summer, whether your family is on the lookout for a new pet or not, an afternoon spent at the Annenberg PetSpace is an afternoon well spent!

Sometimes, all you need in this world are good friends and a good bottle of wine. With National Best Friends Day coming up, Zulily just released a three-bottle set perfect for celebrating what you love most about your BFFs: humor, honesty and trust. But you’ll only be able to buy it through June 15!

Vintage Wine Estates created this limited-edition set, featuring a 2019 Rose, a 2020 Sauvignon Blanc and a 2018 Cabernet. It’s $49 for the set of three and ships to most states in the U.S. Buy it for yourself for your next wine night or book club with friends, or buy it for your bestie and surprise them.

As in-person reunions ramp up this year, a new survey from Zulily and Pollfish found that almost half (49%) of moms said they’d only seen their friends two times or less in the past year. And more than half of moms (51%) said they proactively look for other mom friends for support once they’ve had a child of their own. Even if getting together is impossible, 30% of moms said they speak to their friends twice or more a day.

The survey featured 1,000 U.S. based moms, ages 18+. What will IRL meetups look like? 40% said they’d do a girls night out and 25% said they’d host a happy hour at home. Whatever you’re planning for that long-awaited get together, this wine set will definitely hit the spot!

The first day of anything can be anxiety-inducing, no matter your age. Being a young child, fears and “what-ifs” that surround the unknown can be even tougher for them to verbalize and manage. Though it may be tricky to navigate all of the emotions associated with starting child care for the first time, this story has a happy ending and help is on the way. We’ve rounded up five ways to make the transition to daycare easier, with fewer tears and less stress for both of you!

1. Get Them Psyched!

There is so much to look forward to, like making new friends, learning new skills, getting to know their new teachers and more—yes, there is a lot of “new” in there, which can be nerve-wracking at any age, but the trick is to play up the positive, and there is plenty of that!

An excellent way to help pump them up for this new adventure is to get them involved in preparing for their first day. Let them pick out a backpack they love, maybe even a new outfit and choose a favorite stuffed snuggle buddy for the day. Pack their favorites in their lunch bag, an extra treat (or two) and maybe even include a family photo in their backpack so they can share a little bit of home with their teacher and new friends.

2. Send a Stuffie

Nothing says comfort to a tiny human like a favorite stuffed animal! Many preschools and daycare teachers recommend bringing a favorite soft toy or blanket from home. Beyond a stuffed animal’s cuteness, they act as support through emotional ups and downs, and we know at this age, there are plenty of big emotions to handle. Having a “friend” with them to brave the first day of child care is ideal, since much like a parent and child, their love is unconditional, too, no matter what this exciting new day brings! Just don’t forget to bring their stuffed friend home with you at the end of the day to avoid them missing them at bedtime.

3. Do Your Homework

What should you look for? A vetted child care center. You want to choose a place with tons of experience with all types of families and kids and makes you and your child feel comfortable. Bottom line: You want to be able to walk out the door each day knowing that your child is safe, cared for, loved and supported by skilled teachers, and motivated to unleash their curiosity and learn everything they need to be ready for the next big step—a place where you feel confident in your decision to trust them with the care of your kids.

If you are looking for child care that goes well beyond babysitting, providing an educational foundation to give your kid a head start, consider Bright Horizons®. They have built a reputation for excellence, with more than 30 years of expertise operating child care centers worldwide. Why are these child care centers so coveted? They provide the highest-quality care and learning that delivers both the solution working parents need and the classroom experiences kids need to get ready for school and become enthusiastic learners for life. The environment and curriculum Bright Horizons® provides are not only educational; they are crafted with the joy of little learners in mind. Bright Horizons® also has the know-how to develop each child's growth and development—not a one-size-fits-all education.

4. Reassure Them That You Are Coming Back

It seems simple enough to understand that you will be back for them, but it’s much harder to digest this truth as a small child. Leaving your child for what may be the first time can be anxiety-inducing for both of you. So, how can you ease your child’s worries? Assure them you will be back to take them home and get a little back up from a character they know and love—a handful of kids shows have great episodes about adjusting to daycare!

5. Resist the Urge to Linger

This one is for you, moms and dads (and we’re not saying it’s easy!). Once you say goodbye, leave and don’t look back, even if you hear them cry. Much like sleep training, if you keep coming back in the room once you’ve said your goodbyes, it could take longer to soothe them. Also, keep in mind you want to leave confidently (try to hold back those tears the first few times, mama!) and again, let them know you will see them soon, at the end of the day. Kids can smell fear, well, maybe not literally, but if they see you are upset, they will be, too.

This is when it’s really important to have a child care provider that knows their stuff. You’ve done your homework finding the right child care, and that includes being able to take the reigns during drop-off. Trust that they will be able to comfort your child and put the focus on the fun of what’s going on in the classroom—experienced daycares like Bright Horizons® have this down to a science!

Toting little ones from car to place to car and back can be tricky, not to mention with a sleeping babe on your hands. You know they are going to wake up as soon as you unbuckle that car seat! We have just the trick up our sleeve…err…Maxi-Cosi® does! Their innovative Coral™ XP car seat features a lightweight carrier with a shoulder strap, so you can get on with your day with a lot more ease and a whole lot less effort—it’s like they read our minds! Read on to learn more about what makes this car seat perfect for on-the-go families.

This Brand Gets Parents

We love that Maxi-Cosi® is designed for parents, by parents. They’re out here trying to make our lives easier, and we are here for it! It’s a brand we know and trust to bring us the most innovative products like the new Coral™ XP that takes stress of our plate (and makes us look good doing it!). Maxi-Cosi® is the total package: style, quality, affordability, convenience and innovation. Wow, BFF much?

This Car Seat Is a Parent’s Dream (IRL)

The Maxi-Cosi® Coral™ XP is the first-ever integrated car seat and carrier nesting system that’s built to help parents get up and go effortlessly. What does that mean? Maxi-Cosi® came up with the brilliant idea to put a lightweight carrier inside of their car seat, so you don’t have to fuss with unbuckling and buckling your little one as you get things done! This ultra-handy carrier is removed from the car seat’s outer shell with the touch of a button for seamless transitions for your (hopefully) sleepy little one. The padded handles are retractable, and the carrier features a first-of-its-kind cross body flex-strap for comfort and control. The Coral™ XP is for babies starting at 4lbs and it’s also stroller compatible. It’s like they thought of everything!

Carry Four Different Ways

One day calls for all-hands-on-deck (your two hands, at least!), and others a stroller. Maxi-Cosi® has you covered. The Coral™ XP allows you to keep your baby close with four ways to carry. Our favorite is the the cross-body strap—the only one of its kind! The car seat insert turns into a safe and cozy portable baby sanctuary, all while keeping your two hands free. Now you can shop, type that email you’ve been meaning to send or sip that coffee that’s been sitting there so long it’s cold.

Then there’s the handle carry. Simply grab both sides of the padded handles, push the release button and pull out the lightweight inner carrier. Great for toting sleepyheads from the car to the crib.

Sometimes only the whole shebang will do, so of course, there’s the standard carry. The inner carrier with the car seat shell is a combined weight that rivals standard infant carries. When you need to travel with your Coral™ XP, Maxi-Cosi® literally has you back by not breaking it.

And finally, stroller compatibility! The Coral™ XP is also a travel system, clipping into a range of premium strollers. There’s even an inner carrier adapter, so you can leave the car seat shell in the car—genius!

Saftey

It might as well be their middle name. For 35 years, Maxi-Cosi® has been setting and then outdoing global standards for safety. Of course, the Coral™ XP falls right in line with their strict standards, meeting and exceeding all government safety standards. We guess you could say they’re overachievers when it comes to safety, and we wouldn’t want it any other way!

Who’s ready for a vacation? Yep… we all can use a change of scenery these days. Aside from the packing and prep that goes into traveling with children, you also have to figure out a plan for your fur baby if they’re not coming along. Here’s your guide to finding the perfect pet sitter:

First, What Do You (and Your Pet!) Need?

The type of pet sitter you hire depends on what type of care is required.

  • Is your pet used to someone being around all day?
  • How often does your pet need to be let outside or taken on walks?
  • Do you require overnight care? If you have a cat, you may just need someone to check in daily on their food/water, provide some cuddles and handle the litter box.
  • Are you comfortable having someone sleep in your home or would you rather have your pet go to someone else’s house?
  • Does your pet have special dietary requirements or medical issues?

When It Comes to Finding a Pet Sitter, Comfort Is Key.

You want to ensure you’ve found someone who is:

  • Knowledgeable—ask about their previous experiences and what they would do in an emergency.
  • Reliable—this is where good references come in handy!
  • Comfortable with your pet’s temperament and unique needs—they know when it’s time for playful tug-of-war or a relaxing belly rub.
  • Communicative—if there’s an issue, it’s important to know ASAP. And cute photos are excellent texts to receive when you’re missing your fur baby!
  • Trustworthy—you’ve handed your house keys over to this person, so trust is crucial!
  • Loving—they should treat your pet like their own!

Trying to Avoid the Expense? Rely On Friends and Family.

Before booking a professional sitter, many people ask close family/friends to care for their cat or dog. This is an easy arrangement because you already trust this person, your pet probably knows them well and they’re often familiar with your pet’s routine.

Get a Referral.

If you know someone with a pet, chances are they know a great sitter. Word of mouth is a good route, especially since this is someone you’re giving access to your home when you’re not there. Many people post pet sitting recommendations on local list servs, so be sure to search those for great referrals. Your veterinarian, breeder, and groomer may have a lot of names to pass along.

Use a Professional Service.

There are many services that help you find the right match for your pet (it’s almost like online dating between pet parents and pet sitters!). The Rover app offers boarding, house sitting, dog walking, doggy day care, drop-in visits and even grooming. Review detailed profiles, set up interviews, do meet and greets and then select a sitter. It’s easy to search for specific needs, like if your dog has mobility issues or requires a certain diet. Sitters are approved by Rover’s team of sitter specialists and have passed a basic background check. And perhaps you’ve used Care.com for babysitting? They can connect you with pet care, too! No matter what service you choose, make sure the providers have been vetted and that there are insurance policies in place.

Get Set Up for Success.

Before you head on your way, be clear about the fee and your expectations—and be specific!

  • Outline food, exercise, and any household/cleaning requirements. For example, you’ll want someone who is okay with cleaning up after your pet if they have an accident or tears up a roll of toilet paper!
  • Discuss disciple/reward methods.
  • Provide emergency contact information for yourself, a local friend/neighbor, and the veterinarian.
  • Make sure they know favorite walking routes… and where the leash and poop bags are!
  • Explain anything that’s off limits like being off-leash, trying to play with your neighbor’s cranky pooch, eating unlimited treats…

It may provide peace of mind to do a test run before your trip. Give your pet and the pet sitter some time to bond while you’re nearby. This way you can answer questions as they arise and see just how happy your pup or kitty is with her new BFF!

If you’ve got a toddler, chances are you’d recognize the first beat of the Bluey theme song anywhere. But if the entire first season is also a little too committed to memory, never fear! Mum…Dad…Bingo…Bluey…they’re back next month!

Bluey Season 2 is coming to stream on Disney+ in May—and you’ll have 51 new episodes to choose from! “Hammerbarn,” “Dance Mode,” “Barky Boats,” and “Duck Cake” are just a few to watch endlessly with your brood (or by yourself since Bluey has plenty of clever content for adults).

The Australian animated TV series features the four-pup Heeler family and a large circle of canine friends. After it premiered on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 2018, it quickly became the channel’s most popular children’s show and Disney scooped up broadcasting rights the next year, to the delight of families everywhere. Each episode is bite-sized at seven minutes long and humorously focuses on day-to-day life, including home improvement store trips and swim school.

If you don’t have Disney+ or want to try before you commit to the craze, select Season 2 episodes are available free of charge on the DisneyNOW app or Disney Junior. But trust us, Bluey is worthy of the screentime. Just don’t be alarmed if “Wackadoo,” “Dollarbucks” and “bush wee” become part of your vocabulary.

Whether you’re a brand new parent, you’ve been a parent for a while or you’re looking to plan for your future child’s future, there are so many ways you can plan for your child to have a great life both in your care and as they grow and learn about the world around them. While you might be thinking about financial planning, life planning or some other form of planning, you can form a well-rounded plan that covers all of the necessary bases to set your child up for success.

While of course, you can’t plan out your child’s entire life while they’re still young, eventually they’ll grow up to become their own person, and your job as a parent is to guide them towards that future. By showing them along the way how to care for themselves, making the preparations you need to help them while building a positive home environment, you can prepare and plan for your child’s future in all the ways that truly count. From the financial to the emotional, here are 8 unique ways you can plan for your child’s future.

1. Get Involved in Their Education
One of the best ways to give your child a good future is to ensure that they’re learning to their highest potential. From teaching them to read when they’re younger to helping them with their homework and class selection as they get older, getting involved in their education can help your child make the most of every opportunity. When the time comes to look at colleges and decide what they want with their future, they’ll be able to go at it fully prepared and ready, thanks to you.

2. Build Positive Communication Skills
Part of growing into a positive life is learning to have positive relationships with others, and that all begins at home. As a parent, teaching your children about effective communication skills can set them up for success in all areas of their lives going forward.

3. Start Financial Planning
Everyone talks about how kids can be expensive, and planning for that fact can be one of the best ways for you to prepare yourself and provide for your children as best as possible. Specifically, learning how to budget and setting financial goals for the future can help you set up for your kids financially, whether you want to put them through college, help them into adulthood or anything they might need.

4. Build a Support Network
It takes a village to raise a child, and in order to do that, you need to build that village. You want your children to be surrounded by supportive people who love and care for them, and the best way to start them on that path is to involve great people in raising them. That way, they’ll always have someone to turn to when they need, even if that person isn’t you.

5. Start Forming Your Will
While planning for the day you might not be here anymore isn’t a fun activity, it’s a part of being responsible in the care of your child. If you don’t have a will, making one should be your top priority when you have children. Naming a guardian you trust, deciding what happens to your assets and planning for any possible scenario is what needs to happen when you have kids in the picture.

6. Open a College Fund
Similar to saving and forming your will, another way you can financially prepare for your child’s future is by opening up a college fund. While you don’t need a huge amount of money to open an account, even small sums can grow over time. It’s never too early to start thinking about how you want to provide an education for your kids.

7. Engage in Extracurricular Activities
But what about helping them figure out what they want to do when they grow up, learning hobbies and passions and skills? That’s where activities come in. While, of course, extracurricular activities aren’t the end-all-be-all of planning for your child’s future, they can help your child figure out what they like and remind them to work hard and stay committed to their goals.

8. Show Them Self Care Strategies
Self care is an important life skill that your child can take with them everywhere they go. When you instill those values into your children from a young age, they’ll be more likely to grow into healthy, well-adjusted adults one day.

There are so many ways to ensure that your child has a bright future ahead of them. From preparing financially to getting involved in their education and teaching them life skills, you can truly set your kids up for success from the day they’re born. Your kids deserve the amazing future you have the power to give them.

Social media is like riding a bike—just make sure you give your child a helmet, knee pads, training wheels, and a whole lot of instruction.

I’ve researched the dangers of social media, including conducting a study on recruitment into sex trafficking through social media. Yes, social media can be very dangerous—particularly with little supervision. So, most are surprised when I allow my children, at age 10 and 11 to use social media instead of waiting for the more accepted age of 13. Before getting all judgy, hear me out.

When the magic age of 13 hits, there is a lot that is going on with your child. Developmentally this is the age when children seek independence, crave having their own space, rely on friendships over family, value privacy and may even dabble in rebellious behaviors. This happens whether we want it or not—they are hardwired for this—it is part of their natural development.

If social media is introduced during this time, parents may have a hard time monitoring, exploring together and many children will attempt to push boundaries. In contrast, my 10 and 11-year-old still find me tolerable, and even (dare I say), cool on some days. They still feel close to the family, eagerly share about their school days, and have a healthy fear of the world. I know that in a couple of short years, that could all change and I may miss my opportunity to lay down some critical groundwork in their ability to safely navigate social media.

So, to their surprise and excitement, we embarked on the ride of social media together—equipped with training wheels, knee pads, a helmet, and strict instructions on where and when to ride the bike. We started off slow, I instructed them along the way, I was there to caution them, I let them have some independence, we processed any mistakes they made, they were aware of the dangers and trusted me to guide them. We also have a lot of fun—I have my own Tik Tok account, we watch together, I try to dance, they are embarrassed by my comments, I learn about their friends, and I have valuable insight into their life. They also know the stakes—any purposeful wrong move and the bike goes in storage.

I know that by the time they are 13, when I ever so slowly let my hand off the back of the bike seat, they are equipped with the knowledge to steer independently.  While I will always make them wear the helmets of parental control, time limits, and privacy settings, I will take off the training wheels and knee pads and trust that the practice we have had will keep them safe.

So, if you get a disapproving glance or are questioned “Your kids are on Tik Tok?” just say “Sure, it’s just like riding a bike.”

Hello!  I am a mom to three children, ages 11,12, and 20 and happily married to an awesome guy!  Professionally, I am a psychologist and Life Coach, and founder of Brave Embrace, a practice focusing on female empowerment.  We are a sports-oriented family and enjoy learning, growing, and laughing through every opportunity!

You have to grieve – I already have – for years, alone

While others just told me pleasantries and how they’ll pray for me,

I know there will be no wedding dances with my sons,

I know there won’t be any grandkids

But you, you don’t.

You still envision driving,

You still envision college,

You still envision careers.

You still envision words.

Words that have meaning, and that aren’t just parts of songs.

Being hopeful is one thing,

Being unrealistic is not.

Because the college fund is now a special needs trust,

And my career is over,

And my home is destroyed every single day,

And this isn’t the life I envisioned, but it’s the one I live every day.

And no matter the amount of therapy, there are no guarantees.

And all I want is for my children to be happy, even if it’s at home with me until I die.

And all I think about is who will take care of them when I’m gone, and if they’ll be taken advantage of or treated badly wherever they are.

It’s not doom and gloom because I am the proudest mom for the tiniest accomplishments,

Because I know how hard they had to work for them.

While others look at them and think they’re nothing,

They aren’t enough,

They aren’t words.

Because they didn’t grieve.

Every look in the eye gives me butterflies,

Every point excites me,

Every time a computerized voice talks to me, I understand that it’s him and how he will be able to tell me anything right now.

Every interaction with other children makes my heart skip a beat,

Every good report from school makes me so proud,

And that’s what you’re missing out on when you don’t grieve.

You can’t appreciate the littlest things when you’re still expecting the biggest.

And that eventual failure will only set you up for future disappointment.

And they don’t want you to be disappointed in them when they’re trying so hard just to live.

To live in a world not made for them.

A world too loud, and too bright, and too colorful.

They don’t need that added pressure.

Because I assure you, no matter how hard you think it is for you,

It’s so much harder for them.
