Where does your child’s dietary protein come from? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 90 percent comes from non-fish sources. If you’ve heard mixed reviews on childhood fish consumption, a new report from the AAP may shed light on seafood selection.

While seafood doesn’t necessarily have to fit into the staple category of your kiddo’s food picks, it has plenty of benefits for your child as they grow. Along with providing a lean source of protein (as long as you don’t deep fry it or opt for the stick version), fish may help to increase cognitive function and prevent the risk of developing allergies in childhood.

photo: Terje Sollie via Pexels

Even though the bountiful benefits, and the Omega-3 fatty acids it contains, are widely accepted, some parents still worry about the safety of eating seafood. The AAP report cites fear of methylmercury pollution as the top reason for avoiding fish.

Should you let mercury-related anxiety stop you from feeding your fam fish? No, and yes. Take caution when choosing fish for your child and yourself—especially if you’re pregnant. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration maintains a list of the good, the best and the bad when it comes to fish safety. In general, the fish with the highest mercury levels include king mackerel, marlin, orange roughy, tilefish, swordfish and bigeye tuna.

If you have questions or concerns about feeding your child fish, ask your pediatrician.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently announced a salad, wrap and salad bar tray recall for products sold at Whole Foods Markets and Whole Foods Markets 365 in Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. Representatives from GHSW, LLC (the manufacturers of the recalled items) did not immediately return Red Tricycle’s request for comment.

The current recall was issued after the discovery of an undeclared potential allergen. The mayonnaise used to make some of the products may contain soy. If you or your child have a soy allergy, read on for more recall information.

Recalled Product Description: GHSW Salads, Wraps and Salad Bar Trays

The products in this recall were sold in two Whole Foods Markets 365 in Texas and at various Whole Foods Markets in Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. These include Classic Potato Salad, Classic Tuna Salad Wrap, Smoked Mozzarella Pasta Salad, Traditional Egg Salad, Yellowfin Tuna Salad, Broccoli Crunch, Veggie Crudite Bowl with Asparagus and Bell Peppers and Veggie Crudite Bowl with Jicama and Mini Peppers.

For a full list of products, sizes, packaging and UPC codes, visit the FDA’s website here.

Why These Salad Products Were Recalled

GHSW found during a routine label review that the products’ packaging did not properly declare soy. While some of the products do contain the words “May Contain Soy,” all of the labels in the recall fail to correctly declare this ingredient, putting anyone with a soy allergy at risk.

There are currently no known injuries or adverse reactions caused by these products.

How to Tell if Your Salad Product or Wrap is Part of the Recall

The recall only includes products sold at select Whole Foods and Whole Foods 365 stores in the states of Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. Visit the FDA’s website for a full description of each product on the recall list.

What Parents Can Do

If you have one of the affected products and you, your child or anyone else in your household has a soy allergy, don’t eat it. Throw the product away or bring it back to the place of purchase for a refund. You can call GHSW with questions at 888-449-9386 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. through 4 p.m. or email info@rfgfoods.com.

Pet parents, rejoice: Trader Joe’s cat treats are almost here and they’re just purr-fect for your furry little BFF.

TJ’s has always had great foodie finds for the whole fam—and now our fave grocer wants to treat your feline family members to something tasty, too.

Photo: Mikhail Wasilyev via Unsplash

It’s no secret Trader Joe’s kind of has a thing for dogs: they even released an advent calendar just for dogs this past holiday season. But according to TJ’s Marketing Director Tara Miller, “We love cats and dogs, and we are introducing two new cat treats: one that’s chicken and one that’s tuna.” Speaking on the Inside Trader Joe’s podcast, Miller added: “Every cat will be happy this year. Not just dogs.”

When can you expect these new chicken and tuna cat treats to hit store shelves? Even though Miller dished on the soon-to-be introduction of these new products, she didn’t provide an exact date. Like the other items included in the “new products” section of the podcast, we only know that the treats will launch sometime in 2019.

Along with the cat treats, Miller also announced a few other new (for human) products coming 2019, including gluten-free pizza dough, more organic cookies, new salad kits, Neopolitan Joe-Joe’s ice cream, outside-in gnochhi (with the sauce inside), Caprese ravioli and a chips and guac snack pack!

Um, is anyone else suddenly starving?

The Tooth Fairy was recently a no-show in my house. Sheesh! Is there anyone we can depend on these days? What a lazy, unreliable, no good, piece of… oh wait, I’m the Tooth Fairy.

My son was devastated. I told him the Tooth Fairy was busy and that sometimes it takes her a few days to show up. I also told him she would add an extra dollar for every day she was late and suggested he request her presence the following Wednesday. That was the guilt talking.

I took to Facebook to admit my crime and discovered I wasn’t alone in the “oops, I did it again” department. It turns out many parents forget about the Tooth Fairy and they come up with all kinds of excuses for her absence:

  • She got stuck in traffic.
  • She got lost.
  • There’s been an abnormally large surge in lost teeth.
  • She broke a wing.
  • She’s on vacation.
  • She was scared off by the dog.
  • She’s at a Tooth Fairy Convention.
  • The good Tooth Fairy had the night off.

I could go on and on.

The thing I love about the Tooth Fairy is that anything is possible. She doesn’t have strict protocols like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny, which leaves plenty of room for nuance and imagination. There are infinite ways to explain her actions—the good, the bad, and the scandalous. She’s an independent woman tiny, imaginary being of human form with magical powers who can make and break the rules whenever, wherever, and however she wants. She’s pretty much my hero, which got me thinking about some more appealing explanations for her occasional frequent absences.

1.     She got her period and felt like crap.

2.     It was raining, and she just had a keratin treatment.

3.     She decided to sell all of her belongs, move into a tiny house, and spend her days making jewelry out of teeth.

4.     Digital wallet apps have made her job obsolete.

5.     She’s only doing cruise ships these days.

6.     She’s on sabbatical studying the history of origami.

7.     She’s protesting systematic racism and police brutality against people of color.

8.     Her side hustle—selling handmade gender reveal piñatas on Etsy—is proving to be very lucrative.

9.     She’s having bunion surgery.

10.  Someone gave her Hamilton tickets.

11.  Food poisoning. She’ll never eat tuna salad again.

12.  She’s in Puerto Rico helping with relief efforts.

13.  She’s the new host of the fifth hour of the “Today” show.

14.  She was on her way, but when she walked out her front door, she forgot why, so she went back inside.

15.  She was binge watching “Stranger Things” ahead of season two and lost track of time.

16.  Her phone—and Google Maps—fell in the toilet.

17.  She won the lottery.

18.  She auditioned for “The Voice” and got three chairs to turn around. (She chose Miley.)

Jen Gregory is the writer behind the blog, The Runaway Mama. She wouldn’t want to be anywhere else except home raising her boys, but like the little bunny in Margaret Wise Brown’s classic book, she sometimes wants to run away. Follow her at The Runaway Mama and on Facebook and Twitter.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are one of those amazing foods that have made the transition from being a childhood staple to an adulthood treat flawlessly. What in this wonderful foggy city could possibly be better than a gooey bread-plus-cheese-plus-butter combo? But all grilled cheeses are not created equal, so we have rounded up the best spots for you and the gang to get your fix, from purest outposts (just cheese and bread, please!) to kitchens turning out wilder options (local chèvre with apricot-jalapeño relish, to name just one). Say cheese!

If your little one doesn’t exactly exhibit reverence for things older and taller than them (especially around bedtime), take ‘em to Muir Woods National Monument. It’s one of the last old-growth redwood forests on the planet and one of the only native salmon runs in California. Plus, there’s more than a few opportunities for your tiny treehugger to duck into a massive tree hollow and ham it up for your Instagram feed.

Muir Woods 2

Why It’s So Special
Muir Woods sports a variety of tree types but everyone’s here to see the Sequoia Sempervirens. These coast redwoods are the tallest—and one of the oldest—living things on earth. Why coastal? Because they like the summer fog probably more than you do; it supplies them with nearly half of their water intake. The tallest tree in Muir Woods is over 250 feet and most trees are between 600 to 800 years old. The oldest tree is thought to be 1,200 years young which is merely middle-age for redwoods.

William Kent noted how special these trees were when he and his wife purchased the land in 1905. Two years later, he donated it to the federal government and in 1908 it was proclaimed a National Monument

Muir Woods Redwoods

Happy Trails
Muir Woods sports a number of trails but most visitors are content with the Main Trail Loop. And rightly so: It’s an easy, level stroll that passes through the park’s most notable features including the hushed, awesomeness of Cathedral Grove. You can tailor the path’s length (½ hour, hour or 1 ½ hours) by choosing one of four bridges to cross to head back. Godsend for Gracos: the Main Trail is a stroller-friendly mix of boardwalk and paved road.

Muir Woods Cathedral Grove

Salmon Rush In
Redwood Creek begins on Mount Tam, winds through Muir Woods and flows out into the Pacific at nearby Muir Beach. In Winter, Coho Salmon and Steelhead Salmon (the fish formerly known as Steelhead Trout) return from the ocean to swim back upstream and spawn. You can catch them after heavy rains in December and throughout March. Watch for their offspring in summer months, darting in the deep pools that collect along the river.

Salmon Muir Woods

Earn a Badge
One of the most enjoyable aspects of visiting Muir Woods with young kids is their ability to become a Junior Ranger. Just pick up a free activity book from the Visitor Center and complete a series of hands-on exercises that guide you through the park. Upon completion, your child will be awarded a cool, wooden badge and get sworn in as an official Junior Ranger.

Muir Woods Junior Ranger

Wholesome Provisions
There’s no Coke or Cheetos in the redwoods (this is Marin after all). Instead, you’ll find a cafe offering line-caught tuna and organic peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as well and the Marin Melt, a toasty sandwich that’s made with local cheeses and was featured on the Food Network’s The Best Thing I Ever Ate.

Gift Shops
Nope, it’s not a typo: the gift shops within the park are plural. Muir Woods Trading Company has all the trappings of a tourist stop (think bear statuary carved from wood) while the Visitor Center bookstore stocks a smartly-curated selection of books and toys.

The Parking Situation
You must reserve a parking spot in advance or arrange for a shuttle ride (also in advance), check out gomuirwoods.com to book your spot.

Good to Know

  • Entrance fees are $15/adults ages 16 and up and free for children ages 15 and under. Check the site for free days throughout the year.
  • The redwoods host a wide array of life and they all like the thermostat turned down low. Even when it’s warm in the parking lot, it’s cold and moist in the groves so don’t leave  jackets in the car.
  • There are two full-service restrooms at Muir Woods: one in the parking lot and another adjacent to Muir Woods Trading Company in the park.

Sake bombs might not be on the menu for you anymore, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get your sushi fix. Atlanta is full of tasty and tot-friendly sushi spots where you can introduce them to this fabulous food. Read on for some spots where you can teach the kiddo’s the finer points of chopsticks.

Nakato
Offering both Hibachi and a full sushi menu, Nakato has been serving Atlanta families since 1972. They have all the fun family Japanese dining experiences covered. You want an umbrella in your little ones drink? Check. How about a hibachi experience complete with an onion “volcano” and shrimp flying through the air? Done. Oh and the Sushi is great too! When they say that they are kid friendly, they are not kidding. We celebrated my son’s sixth birthday there; naturally he came dressed as a ninja. The staff was nothing but extremely warm and gracious and when they performed the traditional birthday procession everyone’s face lit up!

Shoya Izakaya
Ask anyone in the know about Shoya and the two words you will always here are: authentic and delicious. Your kiddos will love the fun and lively atmosphere and you will love the melt-in-your –mouth sushi.  The menu is substantial and there is a lot to explore beyond the typical spicy tuna roll. There are plenty of yummy non-sushi items here too. Try the udon, ramen, or yakitori. And stick around for the sweets, the tempura fried ice cream and cream soda offer a sugar buzz worth indulging in!

Phone: 770-457-5555

Harry & Sons
Harry & Son’s makes a fun family outing. After filling your little ones belly you can stroll around the very walkable Virginia Highland neighborhood. Serving both Thai and Japanese fare, and a menu that features everything from sushi to curries and noodles, you’ll find something for everyone.  The coconut soup and Super Crunch roll are kiddo favorites. If you can get out on a school night, they offer buy one get one half off deals for sushi rolls as well as $1.00 nigiri specials.

Ichiban
If you call Northern Atlanta home, then chances are you already know that both Ichiban locations, Alpharetta and Cumming, are always high-energy and packed to the gills with families. Relax; no one is going to look at you funny if the little one drops his chopsticks! With a super friendly staff and reasonable prices Ichiban makes for a great “first-time” family sushi experience. They do a great Habachi dinner and they also serve up some very creative rolls. With names like Chicken of the Sea, Firecracker, and Optimus Prime even the pickiest of little eaters might be convinced to give sushi a go.

Phone: 770-772-6822 (Alpharetta), 770-888-2676 (Cumming)

The Park Tavern
Yup, you read that right. Park Tavern serves sushi. It’s true; nothing about this place says sushi. It’s a park and it’s a tavern. But here’s the thing: the sushi is delicious! The Park Tavern flies in wild caught Hawaiian sashimi-grade tuna and you can taste the quality. Stand out rolls include the Cowboy roll (made with spicy Wagyu steak and potatoes!) and the Big Kahuna. If the kiddos insist, they can always opt for traditional kids menu options. And the best part? You are steps away from Piedmont Park!
