We can all agree there is no right way to parent—some families find time-outs effective, while others turn to other means to teach right and wrong. No matter what camp you’re in (or maybe you prescribe to both depending on the situation and child), this new study by researchers at the University of Michigan wades into the murky and sometimes controversial waters of: to time-out or not to time-out. Read on for the scoop.

The study, which was published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, used archival data from the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation study—following children at three different age points. After reviewing the stats, gathered over eight years, the researchers from this study found there was no difference in emotional and behavioral health between the kiddos who had and didn’t have time-outs.

Rachel Knight, Ph.D., pediatric psychologist at University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and study lead author, said, “There are some alarming claims that time-outs can damage the parent-child relationship and negatively affect emotional health. But the research simply doesn’t support those claims. We did not find a relationship between time-outs and negative side effects in children.”

Knight continued, “Parents are constantly questioning whether they are doing the right thing for their children.” The researcher also added, “Unfortunately the first place many parents go for advice is the Internet, social media or friends—not a medical provider. There is a lot of conflicting information on the web that isn’t vetted or accurate.”

According to Knight, “There’s a wealth of research on how effective time-outs can be in reducing problematic behavior when they are used appropriately.”

As Knight alludes to above, we suggest always speaking to your pediatrician about what disciplinarian action (if any) is best and most effective for your family and child.

Celeb mama Gabrielle Union is living the dream, and it has nothing to do with fame or wealth. Union recently opened up about her jobs as mother and actress—and how she feels about “mom guilt.”

We all know it’s not easy to find work-life balance. Union, like the rest of us mamas, isn’t immune to the issue. So how does the actress, and mama to nine-month-old Kaavia, deal with mommy-ing and working?

Union told Us Weekly, “I don’t have mom guilt.” She went on to add, “Being able to have the job that I love and the baby that I dreamed of is great. I’m a better mom because I’m able to go away and do what I love. Even if I failed miserably, I’m following my dreams. I would be less of a mother if I didn’t set out every day to try to make my dreams come true and other people’s dreams come true. So I don’t have guilt.”

The actress also credits the support she gets from other parents, saying, “We’re all kind of rooting for each other.”

New research may have found that people who live near national parks are healthier. So if you’re looking to relocate, a near-nature area is the way to go!

Researchers from the Oregon State University looked at the benefits of living near protected nature spaces. But this research didn’t just review any parks or nature reserves. Instead, the study focused on protected multi-use green spaces—meaning that anyone who lives nearby has access to the area’s natural resources.

photo: Lukas Kloeppel via Pexels

So what did the researchers find? It looks like the multi-use spaces are key to getting the benefits of natural resource areas. Environmental anthropologist at Oregon State University and study co-author, Drew Gerkey, told Travel and Leisure, “The multiple-use areas are where you see a lot of the positive impacts for people’s health and wealth.” Gerkey went on to add, “The boundaries are relaxed in a way that allows local people to access resources but doesn’t impinge on the larger goal of conservation.”

If you’re looking for more pros of moving to a nature-rich area, new research points to the risks of living near major roads/highways. Along with the obvious traffic safety issues, research from the National Institutes of Health and the University of California, Merced found that children living close to major roadways (and the air pollution caused by cars and other vehicles) may suffer developmentally.

When researchers reviewed data on pregnancy, prenatal pollutant exposure and later child development, they found that young kiddos living close to major roads were twice as likely to score lower in communication skill tests. That is, in comparison to those who lived farther away from major traffic areas.

Health, wealth and a safer fam? It looks like it’s nature reserves and national parks for the win!

You may be used to seeing Chris Hemsworth in the role of Asgardian superhero Thor—but his favorite role is decidedly more down to Earth. Chris Hemsworth loves being a dad as he shared in a recent interview with GQ Australia

Hemsworth is definitely a family man who shares a daughter, India (6) and 4-year-old twin sons Sasha and Tristan with wife and model Elsa Pataky. Read on for all the amazing ways Hemsworth tries to keep his kids humble, despite his super-heroic status.

Unlike other superstar celebrities, Hemsworth doesn’t live a lavish L.A. lifestyle of late-night parties. Instead, the actor resides with his family in Australia’s Byron Bay. His take on trying to raise his kids humble, despite their immense wealth, is pretty refreshing, too:

“When I think about my kids, I don’t want them to miss that joy. Elsa and I talk a lot about how we instill that same appreciation and respect for things. I don’t want them to feel like they’re privileged in any way. The fact that we have money and their parents are famous, that somehow they’re special, that scares me because we grew up with no money.”

Hemsworth also told GQ Australia, “There’s times when I’ve thought, ‘Wow, because having kids is more important to me, some of my roles have suffered’. There’s definitely a couple of films I could’ve put way more energy into but I was like, ‘No, I’d rather be with my kids’.”

Even though Hemsworth admitting giving up some of his professional life for his kiddos, he also said, “You can’t completely dismiss what that pursuit does for you either. I often find myself saying it’s all for my family but in all this I definitely have personal things I need to achieve too.”

The actor went on to add, “The difference is you have to open yourself up and go, ‘Well, you had kids so you forfeited a bit of that’. It can’t be a truly individual, selfish endeavor but we still need to take care of our own.”

Hmm. Work-life balance? Yep, even celebrities have to deal with the realities of working and having children, too. But it looks like, from what Hemsworth has to say, he is total #DadGoals!
