Here’s How to Get One from Krispy Kreme You may not have original Rothkos and O’Keefes on the walls, but we’ll bet you’ve got artwork on display at home from your budding modern artists. If you’re looking to expand your “collection” with some colorful and funky new tableaux, you’ll be pumped by the news that San Francisco families just got a new option for studio time for the little ones–including a Spanish immersion option. The freshly-opened Little Artistas art studio brings art and multiculturalism together in a sunny, tucked-back space in family-friendly Glen Park. Owner Anna Calonje brings her bilingual background (raised in Colombia) and passion for getting children introduced to art at an early age to Little Artistas. When the studio on Chenery Street became available, she jumped on the opportunity to give local kids the gift of self-expression through the arts. Artistic Decisions The studio currently offers classes for children ages 3-11 that introduce concepts of making and thinking about art (including art from cultures around the world) including some Spanish immersion classes. For a more in-depth hands-on experience, Calonje offers workshops on weekends, taught by guest artists, that focus on a more singular topic. Recent classes have included jewelry-making, poetry, superhero-drawing, or sugar skull decorating for the upcoming Dia de los Muertes. Setting the Scene The space features a large chalkboard wall, a dry-erase wall (really!), a gathering spot on the rug surrounded by baskets stuffed with a great selection of books, a sensory table, and several workstations. Most of the art supplies (and Calonje’s got everything!) are tucked away in an alcove, sparing the studio from being dominated in appearance by rows and rows of plastic bins. Birthday a la Botticelli Little Artistas is also available to rent for birthday parties, with projects faciliated by Calonje. There are a variety of packages to choose from, whether you want Calonje to take care of everything down to table runners and cupcakes, or to simply lead the art activity. About Town Calonje is also at the Glen Park Farmers’ Market every weekend, making crafts with kids. Stop by and say hi, and your kid could leave with a handmade paper flower, or a hanging jellyfish they created themselves, or whatever else Calonje has dreamed up for the day. Getting There Street parking in the area is usually a snap midweek, and it’s also an easy BART commute; Little Artistas is located about a block and a half from the Glen Park station.
