From the mom you see toting her four kids around town on wheels to new trails and bike lanes popping around the country, it’s clear that biking is not just a mode of transportation for families, but a way of life. In honor of National Biking Month, we took a look around, and found cool parents who make the daily trek on their wheels in sunshine, rain, and yes, even snow. Flip through the album below for 10 inspiring, adventurous and fun stories.

Madi Carlson – Seattle, Wa

It’s hard to believe Madi Carlson wasn’t much of a biker before her kids came along. Besides being a poster parent for urban biking (she just published a book on the very subject, covering topics from gear to techniques and bike commuting; find out more here!) she’s also an avid bike camper, and also one of Seattle’s Kidical Mass gurus.

Madi has spent a ton of time on the roads and trails with the kids. She and her co-pilots specialize in regular pit stops—playgrounds, libraries, museums and grocery stores—and it’s the unexpected changes (when you gotta go, you gotta go!) and surprise discoveries, like Little Free Libraries and super cool construction sites, that make traveling by bike even more special.

Coolest biking experience? Taking the family cargo bike (a Surly Big Dummy longtail) on the Victoria Clipper passenger ferry to Victoria, British Columbia to go camping for a week.
