Different colors have different heat absorbing capacities. Black has the greatest heat absorbing capacity, which results in ice melting quicker than on white, which reflects the most light. Predict Weather with a Pinecone

Mother Nature has taken over for your local meteorologist. Pine cones open and close based on the humidity in the air, so set a few outdoors, and check them in the morning. What's the scoop? When the air is drier, the pine cones open up so the feather-light seeds inside can travel away from the parent plant (which doesn’t want to compete for resources with a sapling!). Launch a Ping Pong Ball

Using a yardstick and a can, launch a ping-pong ball over and over again to see how far it will go. Make Raisins

Grapes are made up of lots of water. The heat from the sun causes the water to evaporate from the grapes, and it also caramelizes the sugar in a grape, making it sweeter. Get your recipe from Planet Science here.
Paint with a Pendulum

This pendulum project is a much cooler way to learn about gravity than getting smacked in the head with an apple (looking at you Newton!). What's the scoop? Gravity attracts the cup with paint, but tension force from the pivot point pulls the cup upward. See how to do this experiment at Hand Make Kids Art.
No jetpacks are needed for this awesome experiment. This fireless bottle rocket relies on the power of pressure to fly. Pump the bottle full of air, and eventually, enough pressure builds to force the bottle off the cork, displacing water (and creating room for all the air) as it goes. When you add salt to a bowl full of ice cubes and string, it lowers the freezing temperature of the ice, which allows the ice to melt, then re-freeze over the string. Check out Kiwi Crate to learn how to do it!
Bounce Smoke Bubbles
There's something about bubbles, and these dry ice versions are going to make the littles go wild. Add carbon dioxide to water, engage the use of a funnel and send the gas into bubble solution. The bubbles filled with gas from the reaction of carbon dioxide and water is a sweet sight! Steve Spangler Science can walk you through how to do it, and the materials you’ll need.
Much like in the exploding bag experiment, Ice Volcanos rely on the acid-base reaction of vinegar and baking soda to create an “eruption.” Find out how to make them at Reading Confetti and don't forget to add color for extra thrills!
Make Dish Soap Silly Putty

Is there anything you can't make with cornstarch? Combine it with dish soap and dilute the neutral base (the cornstarch) to make an ooey gooey substance. Find out about a process called syneresis, which is why the putty mixture stays so malleable. Get your recipe from Smart Schoolhouse here!
Cook with the Sun
Talk about whipping up an afternoon snack for your science buddies. Trap the sun’s energy to make the air inside the box hotter than the air outside the box. Then add aluminum foil to the flap to direct those burning rays into the box. The plastic wrap keeps the heat inside. The best news about this experiment? It makes killer s’mores! We love finger painting ideas for kids like this one that’s non-toxic and safe for babies
Make your own non-toxic paint and you’ll be less worried about your kids putting it in their mouth. This easy recipe comes together with three ingredients you probably already have at home. Follow these simple step-by-step instructions for making edible finger paint for babies and older kids, and you’ll be making art in no time.

Warning: While this recipe isn't made with toxic ingredients, it does contain raw flour, which the U.S. Food & Drug Administration warns against eating. Keep a watchful eye on your child and a wet washcloth handy to clean off hands as you paint.
Use warm water to help the mixture come together more easily. We used a whisk to get all of the lumps out. If you have older kids, this is a good step for them to help with.
Pour the mixture into four bowls, cups or containers of your choice.
3. Add food coloring to each container.
We stuck with the basics, making our paints red, blue, green and yellow. That way we could talk about color mixing as we played, showing how red + yellow = orange and blue + red = purple.
Pro tip: We used only three drops of food coloring for each small bowl and still ended up with bright colors. If you go overboard with the food coloring, you may end up staining your fingers. But we promise it will wash off eventually!
Our little tester isn't sitting up on his own yet, so we made this a tummy-time activity. You can use any type of paper, but we like finger-painting paper (like this one from Melissa & Doug). It's glossy and non-absorbent, which helps the paint spread easily across it.
Pro tip: Let your baby paint in the high chair (as long as it's easy to clean), lay down a waterproof splat mat, or make this an outdoor activity to keep mess and cleanup to a minimum.
Post-painting clean-up: Set out your artwork to dry, and be prepared to give your baby a bath after your art session. The flour-water mixture should wash out of clothes and off of floors, splat mats, etc., but it's easiest to clean up with warm water right away. Happy finger painting!

Belltown is where you'll find this hot new shop that opened in mid-February. Owner and mom to two kiddos, Colina Bruce started making candles as gifts and party favors for friends. In a short time, she turned her kitchen side hustle into a successful online business, and is excited to bring her soy-based, wood wick candles to her new candle bar. Bruce's candle scents are rooted in nostalgia, self care and good vibes, carefully blended in small batches.
While the new candle bar is a great spot for gal pal get togethers, it's also a new take on a family activity. Pouring sessions are held three to five times daily during business hours, and you're welcome to try you luck as a walk-in or make a reservation online to guarantee your spot. After you arrive, it's time to pick your vessel and your fragrances. There are over 50 scents to choose from. Bruce recommends blending up to three in a single candle. The whole process takes about 45 minutes from start to finish. If you've got an event coming up in the future (think: birthday bash or baby shower), the space is available to rent, with or without a pouring session.

Saving the planet just got a little easier, thanks to Mimi's Zero Waste Market, Seattle's newest bulk and plastic-free shopping experience. The store opened in October 2021 by Seattle mom Heather and her daughter Berenice, and it's made its mark in just five short months. Heather estimates they've saved 740 potential single use containers from going into the waterways and trash. Not bad for a shop that started as a hobby during the pandemic. The store is stocked with sustainable household products and all kinds of organic bulk pantry staples you need to cook, bake and create in the kitchen. To shop here, all you need to bring are clean containers (think: mason jars, steel canisters, even reusable takeout containers) and your shopping list. Don't have any? Not to worry, you can purchase what you need at the store.
Pro tip: If you're not sure where to start, but you know you're ready to dive in to the zero waste waters, Heather suggests starting simple and small. For example, eliminating plastic containers full of products that are mostly water (like liquid laundry detergent) is a good place to start. Consider replacing your usual with a powder or concentrated form instead.
If a new book is what you need, head to this woman-owned Burien bookstore that just celebrated its third year in business. It's an old-school book shop that's all about community, from the free lending library you'll find on-site to the secret books they hide in Free Little Libraries around the city (psst..they're usually wrapped in brown paper packaging with colorful bakers twine). You'll find a diverse selection of kid's books here alongside playful gifts. And the staff is always ready to help with suggestions when you need them.
Marination Ma Kai has long been one of our favorite spots to dine outdoors in Seattle. What started as a food truck has grown into a brick and mortar with three Seattle locations. If you haven't been, it's time to check out this woman-owned, laidback restaurant perched on West Seattle’s shore that boasts unparalleled views of the city skyline. The menu plays with Korean Hawaiian Asian fusion food. Tacos are a popular choice, though the fish and chips (only available at this location) are another reliable favorite. Kids may enjoy the salty Spam musubi, the perfect precursor to the syrupy Hawaiian shave ice for dessert (psst..they make it boozy too). Board the water taxi from downtown for a door-to-door adventure.

It may seem like the only time to keep sunscreen within hands reach is during the summer, but it actually comes in handy in the case of an emergency, too. If you find yourself injured on a trail or even stranded on the side of the road from car issues, slathering on the protective cream will prevent an undue sunburn and one less thing to worry about.

We’ve all heard the expression, “The days are long but the years are short.” And that has never felt truer than when you realize your snuggly newborn has suddenly transformed into a toddler who’s holding your hand for a walk around the block. (Sniff, sniff.). Throughout the first year, your little one will go from one movement milestone to the next. Here’s what to expect, along with tips to foster curiosity and safe exploration of their exciting world.
Like any milestone, babies follow their own timetables. If you have any concerns about their development, talk to your pediatrician.
Is tummy time always a favorite activity? Nope. Most newborns prefer to be held, rather than doing this hard work. Tummy time helps build head, arm, and neck muscles that pave the way for more mobility. Seven weeks is a good time to try placing your baby on their tummy a couple times a day. They may only be able to keep their bobble head up for a few seconds, but they’ll build up to longer lengths of time. Don’t give up, even if you’re seeing some fussing. Distraction with a favorite toy in front helps shift their focus.
Let’s roll
All of that upper body strength building sets the scene for rolling, starting around four months. Going from front to back is more common than rolling from back to front at first, but rolling progression isn’t an exact science. One thing’s for sure: once they start, they won’t want to stop. Moving from one end of the living room to the other is fun for budding explorers. Keep a constant eye on your traveling baby and make sure childproofing is in place.
Sitting on top of the world
Anywhere from four months to eight months, you may see signs of your tot trying to sit. Good head control is important for sitting to be successful. You can support the gradual process by seating them upright on your lap often. When they’ve built up the strength to sit on their own, make sure it’s on a soft activity mat (not unattended on a couch or bed) and that you’re very close by to catch them should they topple back. This exciting new posture gives their favorite toys a whole new vantage point!
Cute crawling
Sitting unsupported (with the ability to independently move into and out of a seated position), rocking on all fours, and rolling are the major clues that crawling comes next. This movement milestone usually occurs between 7-10 months. Place their favorite toys just out of reach so they eagerly crawl to get to them. Some babies create their own unique “scoot” and work their way straight to walking (skipping crawling altogether!). It’s especially important that secure baby gates block the stairs.
Cruising (cool shades, optional)
The next step towards walking is pulling up, followed by cruising. Usually between 8-12 months, your busy baby will start using furniture and crib bars to stand tall and see their world. (Dressers, TV stands, and bookshelves should be securely mounted to the wall in case they want to use them as “props.”) They’ll also use furniture to support them as they shuffle around. The more opportunities you give babies to move (even if they’re unsteady and you’re in a constant state of panic—welcome to parenthood!), the better. You can walk with your baby, by holding onto both of their hands as they take little steps.
We’ve got a walker!
Alas, all that muscle strengthening, coordination, balance, and confidence building has led to walking. Many babies’ take their first steps around their first birthday (but it can happen earlier or later). It’ll start with a few wobbly steps and lots of wobbly falls. But the more practice, the more confidence and control. You’ll see your baby become able to walk in different directions, and even squat to pick something up and continue on their way! Indoors, your little one doesn’t need shoes. Walking around barefoot or in socks greatly supports healthy foot development. But if you’re heading outside on a walk, closed-toe, flexible shoes provide excellent support and protection.
How you can encourage exploration.
Boost resilience. Falls happen. Stay close by and provide reassurance after a fall that it’s okay and they can try again!
Add a new toy into the rotation. Push toys can help little ones work on standing and moving from place to place with some extra “help.”
Let them roam. You may be used to putting them in the stroller, swing, and activity center throughout the day. Try to minimize the use of those contraptions and give them lots of time to move about and work on their new skills.
Create new ways to explore. Who knew Tupperware and spatulas were so exciting? Put together a baby-safe (low) cabinet full of kitchen objects like plastic bowls and wooden spoons. Let them sort, stack, and bang.
Help them “help” you. While it’s not the most efficient way to get things done, opportunities to be helpful are wonderful for giving babies a sense of independence. Whether that’s sorting socks or cleaning up toys, little tasks go a long way.
Add a pet to the mix! Even though they’re little, babies and toddlers can learn from their parents how to care for and be kind to animals. They can help with getting supplies ready, joining you for walks, adding water to the dog bowl when it’s low and providing plenty of snuggles to your furry family member.

Looking for a fun and easy way to teach your kids about kindness? Consider joining the Kindness Rocks Project. This creative project has artists of all ages spreading happy thoughts by way of painted rocks. The idea is simple—paint something inspiring or cheerful on a rock and leave it for someone else to find. Don’t know where to start? Read on!
What's a rock got to do with kindness? Plenty, according to Megan Murphy, the Massachusetts woman who accidentally started the Kindness Rocks movement when she scribbled a few inspiring words on a rock and left it on a Cape Cod beach. Her Kindness Rocks Project has since gained worldwide attention, with inspirational, hash-tagged rocks popping up in at least seven countries and garnering millions of views on social media.
"The project isn’t about rocks per se, it’s about connection," Murphy said. "People find a rock, and they relate to the message on the rock. Then they connect with the fact that there is a human being on the other end of that rock, and they don't feel so alone." It can be as simple as scrawling "Hope" on a stone and tossing it on the sidewalk on your way to work, or as complex as painting an entire rock with Van Gogh's "Starry Night" and leaving your masterpiece up for grabs.
First, you should join a local rock-painting group. A quick Google or Facebook search of "kindness rocks" and your hometown will probably turn up something. If not, rev up the bandwagon and rock it on your own, like this altruistic seven-year-old from San Francisco.
- Smooth rocks (you can scavenge outside for them or you can find a whole bag at Home Depot or on Amazon)

Step One: Prep Your Rock

Since rocks are porous, it's best to lay down a layer of paint to act as a primer and backdrop for your finished masterpiece. There's no need to paint the bottom of the rock (that just makes it harder to handle as it's drying.).
Step Two: Write Something (or Paint a Picture)

When the primer coat is completely dry, let your littles use a paint pen to write something on their rock. To help them come up with something, try asking them simple questions about kindness: What is kindness? What is a 'kind' thing to say? What message would make you happy to see on a rock? What could you hear someone else say that would make you feel special?
And, don't feel bound by words; painting cute or happy pictures works, too (Smiley faces and rainbows, anyone?)!
Step Three: Hashtag It!

Write a hashtag on your rock to help whoever finds it realize that they can share it with the world. Our favorite is #thekindnessrocksproject, but there are gobs of smaller groups out there for those who want to keep it local. Don't forget to check your social media channels to see if someone shared your rock!
Step Four: Seal It

Once your rock is dry, spread a layer of Mod Podge over it. This will keep the paint from chipping and will seal it against water. (Plus it will make your rock look shiny and awesome.)
Step Five: Leave Your Rock Somewhere to Be Found

Let your kids scatter their well-wishes around your neighborhood, in a park, or on the sidewalk on their way to school—basically, anywhere the rocks can be found by someone else!
Tip: Don't hide your rock so well that it can't be easily found—and don't put it on private property where passersby will think it belongs to someone.
