Get outside, have an epic adventure, and learn something new

Want to get outside, have an epic adventure, and learn something new? Try an at-home science experiment to really blow their minds. From walking on eggshells to becoming one with slime, we’ve got everything you need to get a big reaction from your kids. Keep reading for 20 great science experiments and projects that keep fun going.

Walk on Eggs

Photo: S. Massey

How can you walk on eggs without breaking them? Steve Spengler shows us how and teaches an awesome lesson on how an egg’s unique shape gives it tremendous strength, despite its seeming fragility. Check out this play-by-play to get started.

Insider tip: if this experiment has you in the mood for eggs, check out our list of the best egg-cellent egg recipes for kids.

Sketch a Shadow

See what happens when you set up toys on paper in the sun, and try tracing their shadows at different times of the day. You can draw right on the sidewalk with chalk, too. Pick toys with distinctive outlines to make it easier. For more science fun in the sun, click here.

Insider tip: we love sidewalk chalk as much as you do. In fact, we compiled the best ways for kids to play outside with chalk. Scoop the story here

Experiment with Slime

Photo: Little Bins for Little Hands

By now, you've accepted your kids love of the gross. And, you've probably either tried to figure out what to do with the slime your kids have brought home, or you've ponied up and made it with them yourself. Check out this awesome collection of science experiments by Little Bins for Little Hands with ideas for testing a hypothesis, changing one ingredient to affect an outcome and more.

Insider tip: wondering why exactly your kids are fascinated with slime? There's an actual science behind it. Hop over to this video for the explanation.

Make a Rainbow

Photo: Trini3680 via pixabay

Some days, you have to make your own sunshine. And on those days, you should go ahead and make your own rainbows, too. Luckily for us, we've got more than one way to do it. Check out these six ways six ways to wow them with a little over-the-rainbow science.

Insider tip: after all of these kids science experiments, you deserve a colorful treat. Taste the rainbow (literally) with these great rainbow recipes for kids.

Percolate a Jug of Sun Tea

There might not be a better summertime science experiment than making a jug of sweet tea using nothing but sunshine. You'll learn more from this science lesson on heat (how long will it take to really diffuse the tea bags or fresh herbs, and how heat creates currents in the water) if you remember not to shake it or stir it. Just let nature take its course (and check out this tutorial and explanation of sun tea here).

Explode a Lunch Bag

Photo: S. Massey

Mix baking soda and vinegar mix together to make a booming bag. Gasses (carbon dioxide) need more room than liquids and solids, so throw a little of that in and the bag expand until it pops. Click here for Science Bob’s case notes and to learn how to do it for the biggest bang!

Create a DIY Sundial

Photo: S. Massey

Take advantage of the changing days and do a little solar searching. Since the Earth is in constant rotation around the sun, and also in constant rotation on its axis (whew!), a sundial lets us keep track of time. Want to learn more? Check out this activity by Kiwi Crate.

Insider tip: harness the sun's energy for your next kids science experiment. We've uncovered even more kids sun science experiments to make your day.

Make a Magic Bag

Photo: S. Massey

How many pencils can you poke into plastic? Find out all about polymers and why plastic is so pliable. Check out Steve Spangler Science for your list of simple ingredients and instructions. You’ll have hours of science fun (but we warn you—turning the bag into a sprinkler is almost as fun as the experiment!).

Compare Melt Rates of Colors

kids doing at-home science experiments
Photo: S. Massey

Different colors have different heat absorbing capacities. Black has the greatest heat absorbing capacity, which results in ice melting quicker than on white, which reflects the most light. Green Planet Solar Energy shows you how to observe and report on which colors affect ice’s melting rates here.

Predict Weather with a Pinecone

Photo: S. Massey

Mother Nature has taken over for your local meteorologist. Pine cones open and close based on the humidity in the air, so set a few outdoors, and check them in the morning. What's the scoop? When the air is drier, the pine cones open up so the feather-light seeds inside can travel away from the parent plant (which doesn’t want to compete for resources with a sapling!). To find out more, check out this experiment on Science-Sparks.

Launch a Ping Pong Ball

Photo: S. Massey

If only you'd known about this simple science project before buying a pricey toy to do the same thing. Using a yardstick and a can, launch a ping-pong ball over and over again to see how far it will go. Ensure extra fun by experimenting with size and shape of objects to launch and by adjusting the size of the fulcrum (the can), too. Check out the how-to on Buggy and Buddy.

Watch Water Walk

Photo: S. Massey

Who knew the magic of a strong paper towel (other than every parent on the planet!)? Amaze the kids by using one to make water walk from one cup to another, and teach them about absorption, saturation and gravity at the same time. Check out Coffee Cups and Crayons for step-by-step instructions.

Insider tip: for more great water projects for kids, check out these science experiments.

Make Raisins

Photo: S. Massey

Grapes are made up of lots of water. The heat from the sun causes the water to evaporate from the grapes, and it also caramelizes the sugar in a grape, making it sweeter. Get your recipe from Planet Science here.

Paint with a Pendulum

Photo: S. Massey

This pendulum project is a much cooler way to learn about gravity than getting smacked in the head with an apple (looking at you Newton!). What's the scoop? Gravity attracts the cup with paint, but tension force from the pivot point pulls the cup upward. See how to do this experiment at Hand Make Kids Art.

Insider tip: for the littlest littles get them in on the science fun and make your own DIY baby-safe finger paint with our recipe here

Launch a Water Propelled Bottle Rocket

No jetpacks are needed for this awesome experiment. This fireless bottle rocket relies on the power of pressure to fly. Pump the bottle full of air, and eventually, enough pressure builds to force the bottle off the cork, displacing water (and creating room for all the air) as it goes. Head to Science-Sparks for your list of materials and construction instructions.

Stick to Ice

Photo: Kiwi Co

When you add salt to a bowl full of ice cubes and string, it lowers the freezing temperature of the ice, which allows the ice to melt, then re-freeze over the string. Check out Kiwi Crate to learn how to do it!

Bounce Smoke Bubbles

There's something about bubbles, and these dry ice versions are going to make the littles go wild. Add carbon dioxide to water, engage the use of a funnel and send the gas into bubble solution. The bubbles filled with gas from the reaction of carbon dioxide and water is a sweet sight! Steve Spangler Science can walk you through how to do it, and the materials you’ll need.

Insider tip: goodbye bubble wands, hello DIY bubbles. Learn how to make your own bubbles here.

Erupt an Ice Volcano

at home science experiments
S. Massey

Much like in the exploding bag experiment, Ice Volcanos rely on the acid-base reaction of vinegar and baking soda to create an “eruption.” Find out how to make them at Reading Confetti and don't forget to add color for extra thrills!

Make Dish Soap Silly Putty

Photo: S. Massey

Is there anything you can't make with cornstarch? Combine it with dish soap and dilute the neutral base (the cornstarch) to make an ooey gooey substance. Find out about a process called syneresis, which is why the putty mixture stays so malleable. Get your recipe from Smart Schoolhouse here!

Cook with the Sun

Talk about whipping up an afternoon snack for your science buddies. Trap the sun’s energy to make the air inside the box hotter than the air outside the box. Then add aluminum foil to the flap to direct those burning rays into the box. The plastic wrap keeps the heat inside. The best news about this experiment? It makes killer s’mores! Check out NASA Climate Kids to learn how to make it.

Insider tip: keep the science fun cooking by making your own s'mores (sans campfire). Check out our tutorial here.

We love finger painting ideas for kids like this one that’s non-toxic and safe for babies

Make your own non-toxic paint and you’ll be less worried about your kids putting it in their mouth. This easy recipe comes together with three ingredients you probably already have at home. Follow these simple step-by-step instructions for making edible finger paint for babies and older kids, and you’ll be making art in no time.

stock

Warning: While this recipe isn't made with toxic ingredients, it does contain raw flour, which the U.S. Food & Drug Administration warns against eating. Keep a watchful eye on your child and a wet washcloth handy to clean off hands as you paint.

Save this recipe for edible baby finger paints.

Supplies You'll Need

1. Mix the flour and water together.

stock

Use warm water to help the mixture come together more easily. We used a whisk to get all of the lumps out. If you have older kids, this is a good step for them to help with.

2. Divide the flour and water mixture.

stock

Pour the mixture into four bowls, cups or containers of your choice.

3. Add food coloring to each container.

We stuck with the basics, making our paints red, blue, green and yellow. That way we could talk about color mixing as we played, showing how red + yellow = orange and blue + red = purple.

stock

Pro tip: We used only three drops of food coloring for each small bowl and still ended up with bright colors. If you go overboard with the food coloring, you may end up staining your fingers. But we promise it will wash off eventually!

4. Let your baby get creative!

stock

Our little tester isn't sitting up on his own yet, so we made this a tummy-time activity. You can use any type of paper, but we like finger-painting paper (like this one from Melissa & Doug). It's glossy and non-absorbent, which helps the paint spread easily across it.

stock

Pro tip: Let your baby paint in the high chair (as long as it's easy to clean), lay down a waterproof splat mat, or make this an outdoor activity to keep mess and cleanup to a minimum.

stock

Post-painting clean-up: Set out your artwork to dry, and be prepared to give your baby a bath after your art session. The flour-water mixture should wash out of clothes and off of floors, splat mats, etc., but it's easiest to clean up with warm water right away. Happy finger painting!

Whether you’re looking for a good book, a fantastic workout, or a way to reduce waste, make an impact when you shop at one of our favorite local spots

When it comes to innovative ideas, practical products and community-minded missions, you can count on these Seattle-area, women-owned businesses to get the job done. And as far as we’re concerned, there’s no better time to support these enterprising local go-getters than during Women’s History Month. Whether you’re looking for a good book, a fantastic workout or a way to reduce waste, you can make an impact when you shop at one of our favorite spots.

Brick & Mortar Shops We Love

Noir Luxe Candle Co.

Belltown is where you'll find this hot new shop that opened in mid-February. Owner and mom to two kiddos, Colina Bruce started making candles as gifts and party favors for friends. In a short time, she turned her kitchen side hustle into a successful online business, and is excited to bring her soy-based, wood wick candles to her new candle bar. Bruce's candle scents are rooted in nostalgia, self care and good vibes, carefully blended in small batches.

While the new candle bar is a great spot for gal pal get togethers, it's also a new take on a family activity. Pouring sessions are held three to five times daily during business hours, and you're welcome to try you luck as a walk-in or make a reservation online to guarantee your spot. After you arrive, it's time to pick your vessel and your fragrances. There are over 50 scents to choose from. Bruce recommends blending up to three in a single candle. The whole process takes about 45 minutes from start to finish. If you've got an event coming up in the future (think: birthday bash or baby shower), the space is available to rent, with or without a pouring session.

Insider tip: Future store pop-ups featuring local BIPOC-owned small businesses are on the horizon.

Mimi's Zero Waste Market

Saving the planet just got a little easier, thanks to Mimi's Zero Waste Market, Seattle's newest bulk and plastic-free shopping experience. The store opened in October 2021 by Seattle mom Heather and her daughter Berenice, and it's made its mark in just five short months. Heather estimates they've saved 740 potential single use containers from going into the waterways and trash. Not bad for a shop that started as a hobby during the pandemic. The store is stocked with sustainable household products and all kinds of organic bulk pantry staples you need to cook, bake and create in the kitchen. To shop here, all you need to bring are clean containers (think: mason jars, steel canisters, even reusable takeout containers) and your shopping list. Don't have any? Not to worry, you can purchase what you need at the store.

Pro tip: If you're not sure where to start, but you know you're ready to dive in to the zero waste waters, Heather suggests starting simple and small. For example, eliminating plastic containers full of products that are mostly water (like liquid laundry detergent) is a good place to start. Consider replacing your usual with a powder or concentrated form instead.

If a new book is what you need, head to this woman-owned Burien bookstore that just celebrated its third year in business. It's an old-school book shop that's all about community, from the free lending library you'll find on-site to the secret books they hide in Free Little Libraries around the city (psst..they're usually wrapped in brown paper packaging with colorful bakers twine). You'll find a diverse selection of kid's books here alongside playful gifts. And the staff is always ready to help with suggestions when you need them.

Marination Ma Kai

Marination Ma Kai has long been one of our favorite spots to dine outdoors in Seattle. What started as a food truck has grown into a brick and mortar with three Seattle locations. If you haven't been, it's time to check out this woman-owned, laidback restaurant perched on West Seattle’s shore that boasts unparalleled views of the city skyline. The menu plays with Korean Hawaiian Asian fusion food. Tacos are a popular choice, though the fish and chips (only available at this location) are another reliable favorite. Kids may enjoy the salty Spam musubi, the perfect precursor to the syrupy Hawaiian shave ice for dessert (psst..they make it boozy too). Board the water taxi from downtown for a door-to-door adventure.

Insider tip: Count on the line being out the door on summer weekends. Visit mid-week or when the weather isn't so inviting for faster service with the same amazing views.

Macadons

Macadons owner Donna Chen spent a year perfecting her macarons, but it wasn't until she leaned in and embraced her heritage that she was able to break through. She found that by adding unique, Asian-inspired flavors like taro, durian, lychee and green tea to her delicate macarons, she created something different. Now you'll find all kinds of inventive flavors. many with intriguing printed pictures on them, at the flagship store in White Center. They come in all shapes and sizes; some are even filled with ice cream. Speaking of ice cream, Macadon's is hard to beat. It makes a great base for dunking delicate cookies, or so we're told.

Swoop Bag

Inspired by her grandmother and her kids' obsessions with LEGOs, Seattle mom Sarah Kirk released the Swoop Bag over ten years ago, and it's been a parent favorite ever since. This LEGO storage bag's brilliance is in its simplicity. Kids can easily clean up what feels like an entire swimming pool's worth of LEGOs by gathering them onto the bag and then "swooping" them up. We're pretty sure even toddlers can handle this one. All of the bags are made right here in Seattle and can help kids (and parents!) store all kinds of odds and ends using these colorful, durable pouches.

No matter how careful you are, parenting means it’s impossible to avoid the occasional worrisome scenario. While most parents tote a basic first aid kit, doctors recommend carrying these 12 items to treat wounds and stop bleeding if you find yourself too far from a medical professional, as well as preventative items such as sunscreen and hand sanitizer.

Hand Sanitizer

Zoey Naturals

Unless you're hiding under a rock, you can't go a day without hearing another Coronavirus aka Covid-19 update. You've also probably heard the best way to prevent the spread of any illness is frequen, thorough handwashing (for at least 20 seconds) and healthy dose of hand sanitizer. If you're concerned about the chemicals in some sanitizer, we recommend Zoey Naturals, which is baby-safe and paraben, sulfate and phthalate free, while still killing 99% of germs. Hello Bello also makes a hand-sanitizing spray (not recommend for babies but great for kids). We also like Clean & Well's disinfecting wipes for surfaces.

(Editor's note:, at the time of this writing all products were in stock).

Sunscreen

Amazon

It may seem like the only time to keep sunscreen within hands reach is during the summer, but it actually comes in handy in the case of an emergency, too. If you find yourself injured on a trail or even stranded on the side of the road from car issues, slathering on the protective cream will prevent an undue sunburn and one less thing to worry about.

Survival Knife

Amazon

While it may seem scary to have a survival knife in your back pocket, it definitely can come in handy. Cut gauze or bandages, fashion a walking stick in a pinch, or cut away brush. A knife is no laughing matter, but it can save your life in an emergency. Be sure to keep it far away from small hands and fingers. This one's for grown-ups only.

Gauze

Amazon

You never know when you'll incur a scratch, bite or cut while out hiking or camping, and that's why keeping a stash of gauze is a great idea. Use it to clean wounds, staunch bleeding or to cover from the elements. Gauze is a clean and breathable material you can't afford not to have when heading out for an adventure.

Elastic Wrap Bandage

elastic wrap bandages
Amazon

Apply pressure to wounds and keep them clean and bandaged with elastic wrap bandages. They are a small in size, but can take care of a multitude of injuries, from sprained ankles to keeping gauze in place. Take it one step further and purchase self-adhering bandages like these from Amazon and you can rest easy until you can find a doctor for treatment.

Tourniquet

tourniquet
Amazon

Serious injuries never happen when we expect them, but preparation can save lives. Keeping a tourniquet on hand can do just that––not only save a loved ones life from a serious bleeding injury but also give you piece of mind. You don't need to worry about tearing a strip of fabric or tying it tight enough––purchase a simple medical tourniquet and let it do all the work for you!

Protein Food Pouch

Amazon

Getting separated from your tour group or being hindered by the elements can mean an unexpected longer time in the wilderness. Protect your family against hunger-related issues by packing simple protein food pouches that can be eaten on the run. They are quick to prepare and contain wholesome ingredients to keep you fueled and ready to press on towards home.

Water Purifying Tablets

water purification tablets
Amazon

Finding drinkable water in the natural elements can be difficult, and that's why keeping a bottle of water purification tablets is a must. The iodine tablets purify contaminated water in 30 minutes, killing off bacteria. Staying hydrated while in the great outdoors and injured is key––this product is a no-brainer! Check out these leak-proof water bottles for you next excursion.

Flashlight

In case you end up staying out longer than expected, always keep a flashlight with fresh batteries on hand. Whether you're handling an injured family member or are just exhausted from a long day out with the kids and its getting dark, you can never go wrong with a flashlight in your day back or car trunk. (Also handy for playing flashlight games f you're bored).

Emergency Blanket

foil blanket
Amazon

Keep loved ones who are injured and in shock warm when you keep foil blankets on hand. They are tiny––only the size of a credit card when folded up—and can be easily carried in purses, diaper bags or backpacks without any added weight. They are great for disaster kits and perfect for keeping in your car if you encounter a car accident or other scenario when someone needs a blanket to stay warm.

Instant Cold Pack

Amazon

Lower fevers, relieve bug bites and treat swollen limbs with an instant cold pack. Carry in your backpack and snap to start the chemical reaction that makes these ice packs cold. No need to freeze in advance, and no melting bags of ice!

Study Shows How You Treat Your Partner Will Affect Your Child’s Future

The Ultimate Jet Lag Survival Guide for Parents

We’ve all heard the expression, “The days are long but the years are short.” And that has never felt truer than when you realize your snuggly newborn has suddenly transformed into a toddler who’s holding your hand for a walk around the block. (Sniff, sniff.). Throughout the first year, your little one will go from one movement milestone to the next. Here’s what to expect, along with tips to foster curiosity and safe exploration of their exciting world.

Like any milestone, babies follow their own timetables. If you have any concerns about their development, talk to your pediatrician.

Now that your Tinybean is exploring, it may be time for a furry adventure buddy. See how Hill’s science-backed nutrition can give your best friend their best life.

Tummy time!

Is tummy time always a favorite activity? Nope. Most newborns prefer to be held, rather than doing this hard work. Tummy time helps build head, arm, and neck muscles that pave the way for more mobility. Seven weeks is a good time to try placing your baby on their tummy a couple times a day. They may only be able to keep their bobble head up for a few seconds, but they’ll build up to longer lengths of time. Don’t give up, even if you’re seeing some fussing. Distraction with a favorite toy in front helps shift their focus.

Let’s roll

All of that upper body strength building sets the scene for rolling, starting around four months. Going from front to back is more common than rolling from back to front at first, but rolling progression isn’t an exact science. One thing’s for sure: once they start, they won’t want to stop. Moving from one end of the living room to the other is fun for budding explorers. Keep a constant eye on your traveling baby and make sure childproofing is in place.

Sitting on top of the world

Anywhere from four months to eight months, you may see signs of your tot trying to sit. Good head control is important for sitting to be successful. You can support the gradual process by seating them upright on your lap often. When they’ve built up the strength to sit on their own, make sure it’s on a soft activity mat (not unattended on a couch or bed) and that you’re very close by to catch them should they topple back. This exciting new posture gives their favorite toys a whole new vantage point!

Cute crawling

Sitting unsupported (with the ability to independently move into and out of a seated position), rocking on all fours, and rolling are the major clues that crawling comes next. This movement milestone usually occurs between 7-10 months. Place their favorite toys just out of reach so they eagerly crawl to get to them. Some babies create their own unique “scoot” and work their way straight to walking (skipping crawling altogether!). It’s especially important that secure baby gates block the stairs.

Cruising (cool shades, optional)

The next step towards walking is pulling up, followed by cruising. Usually between 8-12 months, your busy baby will start using furniture and crib bars to stand tall and see their world. (Dressers, TV stands, and bookshelves should be securely mounted to the wall in case they want to use them as “props.”) They’ll also use furniture to support them as they shuffle around. The more opportunities you give babies to move (even if they’re unsteady and you’re in a constant state of panic—welcome to parenthood!), the better. You can walk with your baby, by holding onto both of their hands as they take little steps.

We’ve got a walker!

Alas, all that muscle strengthening, coordination, balance, and confidence building has led to walking. Many babies’ take their first steps around their first birthday (but it can happen earlier or later). It’ll start with a few wobbly steps and lots of wobbly falls. But the more practice, the more confidence and control. You’ll see your baby become able to walk in different directions, and even squat to pick something up and continue on their way! Indoors, your little one doesn’t need shoes. Walking around barefoot or in socks greatly supports healthy foot development. But if you’re heading outside on a walk, closed-toe, flexible shoes provide excellent support and protection.

How you can encourage exploration.

  • Boost resilience. Falls happen. Stay close by and provide reassurance after a fall that it’s okay and they can try again!

  • Add a new toy into the rotation. Push toys can help little ones work on standing and moving from place to place with some extra “help.”

  • Let them roam. You may be used to putting them in the stroller, swing, and activity center throughout the day. Try to minimize the use of those contraptions and give them lots of time to move about and work on their new skills.

  • Create new ways to explore. Who knew Tupperware and spatulas were so exciting? Put together a baby-safe (low) cabinet full of kitchen objects like plastic bowls and wooden spoons. Let them sort, stack, and bang.

  • Help them “help” you. While it’s not the most efficient way to get things done, opportunities to be helpful are wonderful for giving babies a sense of independence. Whether that’s sorting socks or cleaning up toys, little tasks go a long way.

  • Add a pet to the mix! Even though they’re little, babies and toddlers can learn from their parents how to care for and be kind to animals. They can help with getting supplies ready, joining you for walks, adding water to the dog bowl when it’s low and providing plenty of snuggles to your furry family member.

Considering adding a pet to your family? See how Hill’s science-backed nutrition can give your best friend their best life.

Want to let your little artist express themself but worried about the mess they’ll make in the house? Take it outside! From squirt guns painting to balloon paint bombs, unleash your little Picassos with these fun outdoor painting projects (and don’t forget the baby-safe paint!).

Dart Art

Agnes Hsu via hello, Wonderful

Drip a little paint into small party balloons, then blow them up, tack them onto a canvas, and give your little artists some darts. They'll love seeing the paint splatter when they hit their mark. Find out more from Northern California Mama Agnes Hsu at hello, Wonderful. Note: You'll need darts and thumbtacks for this project, so we recommend adult supervision.

Swing With It!

Meredith Magee Donnelly via Homegrown Friends

Turn your pint-sized painters into pendulums with this clever art project that lets kids swing and paint at the same time. Get the simple instructions (and a video to show your kids what they can do) at Homegrown Friends.

Paint Like Pollock

Playfully Learning

Jackson Pollock-inspired art may be the perfect paint project for kids. Why? Because all little Pollocks need to do is drip, pour, and splatter globs of baby-safe paint onto a giant canvas floor. Sound fun? Find out more from kindergarten teacher/mom Dana Gorman's Playfully Learning blog.

Load and Shoot!

Melissa Heckscher

Kids will love this colorful excuse to use water guns ("But it's art, Mom!"). Just fill up a few squirt guns with paint (and water) and let your little ones aim. Get the scoop from Melissa Lennig at Fireflies and Mudpies.

Use Your Feet

Melissa Heckscher

Give those little hands a break and let your kids step, slide, and dance their way to painted masterpieces. Young artists will love getting their feet messy and seeing their footprints in action. Head over to Homegrown Friends to get the simple step-by-step instructions.

Pop Goes the Artwork

Childhood 101

Bubbles! What kid doesn't love them? With this simple project from Christie Burnette of Childhood 101, your little soap artists can use bubble solution (mixed with a little food coloring) to create magical bursts of color.

Hammer Time!

Melissa Heckscher

Let your kids smack a hammer or mallet down on cotton rounds to splatter the "hidden" paint beneath. Young painters will love trying to guess what color will splat with each swing. Get the step-by-step from blogger Michelle at Crafty Morning.

Bombs Away!

Craftulate

They’re going to get paint all over them; might as well get to it, stat! Just fill up a few dozen water balloons with paint, lay down a canvas (or drop cloth), and let your kids stomp, squish, and jump away. Get all the details at Craftulate.

Egg-citing Art

Melissa Heckscher

Drip a little paint into hollowed-out eggs and let your kids smash away with this fun project from Growing a Jeweled Rose. Note: To avoid making a stinky art project, be sure to rinse the eggs out before you pour in the paint!

Wrap It Up!

The Chaos and the Clutter

Kids will love becoming a human roller stamp with this whole-body activity courtesy of The Chaos and the Clutter. Just dip your crazy kiddos' bubble-wrapped bodies in paint and let them slam against or roll around on their canvas of choice. Will they make a masterpiece? Who cares! Note: If you'd like to keep your human bubble wrapping on a smaller scale, try this bubble wrap stomp painting project from Mess for Less.

Looking for a fun and easy way to teach your kids about kindness? Consider joining the Kindness Rocks Project. This creative project has artists of all ages spreading happy thoughts by way of painted rocks. The idea is simple—paint something inspiring or cheerful on a rock and leave it for someone else to find. Don’t know where to start? Read on!

What It Is

Pixabay

What's a rock got to do with kindness? Plenty, according to Megan Murphy, the Massachusetts woman who accidentally started the Kindness Rocks movement when she scribbled a few inspiring words on a rock and left it on a Cape Cod beach. Her Kindness Rocks Project has since gained worldwide attention, with inspirational, hash-tagged rocks popping up in at least seven countries and garnering millions of views on social media.

"The project isn’t about rocks per se, it’s about connection," Murphy said. "People find a rock, and they relate to the message on the rock. Then they connect with the fact that there is a human being on the other end of that rock, and they don't feel so alone." It can be as simple as scrawling "Hope" on a stone and tossing it on the sidewalk on your way to work, or as complex as painting an entire rock with Van Gogh's "Starry Night" and leaving your masterpiece up for grabs.

How It Works

Third Serving via Unsplash

First, you should join a local rock-painting group. A quick Google or Facebook search of "kindness rocks" and your hometown will probably turn up something. If not, rev up the bandwagon and rock it on your own, like this altruistic seven-year-old from San Francisco.

Here's What You'll Need

Amazon

- Smooth rocks (you can scavenge outside for them or you can find a whole bag at Home Depot or on Amazon)

- Acrylic paint

- Paintbrushes

- Fine point paint pens (optional, but makes writing words way easier)

- clear spray-on sealer like Krylon for sealing rocks (parents should do this)

Step One: Prep Your Rock

Melissa Heckscher

Since rocks are porous, it's best to lay down a layer of paint to act as a primer and backdrop for your finished masterpiece. There's no need to paint the bottom of the rock (that just makes it harder to handle as it's drying.).

Step Two: Write Something (or Paint a Picture)

Melissa Heckscher

When the primer coat is completely dry, let your littles use a paint pen to write something on their rock. To help them come up with something, try asking them simple questions about kindness: What is kindness? What is a 'kind' thing to say? What message would make you happy to see on a rock? What could you hear someone else say that would make you feel special?

And, don't feel bound by words; painting cute or happy pictures works, too (Smiley faces and rainbows, anyone?)!

Step Three: Hashtag It!

Melissa Heckscher

Write a hashtag on your rock to help whoever finds it realize that they can share it with the world. Our favorite is #thekindnessrocksproject, but there are gobs of smaller groups out there for those who want to keep it local. Don't forget to check your social media channels to see if someone shared your rock!

Step Four: Seal It

Melissa Heckscher

Once your rock is dry, spread a layer of Mod Podge over it. This will keep the paint from chipping and will seal it against water. (Plus it will make your rock look shiny and awesome.)

Step Five: Leave Your Rock Somewhere to Be Found

iStock

Let your kids scatter their well-wishes around your neighborhood, in a park, or on the sidewalk on their way to school—basically, anywhere the rocks can be found by someone else!

Tip: Don't hide your rock so well that it can't be easily found—and don't put it on private property where passersby will think it belongs to someone.
