If you’re wondering what’s open on Christmas Day, turns out, there are plenty of merry activities to make December 25th the most wonderful day of the year. From harbor tours and top-notch museums to dazzling lights and ice skating, some of our favorite things to do in San Diego are open on Christmas Day. Treat your family to a day on the ice at Hotel del Coronado's famous beachfront ice rink. Dust off your winter hat and mittens for a spin with the most stunning views of the Pacific. If you want to calm the crazy gift-opening energy, then drive out to the Cabrillo National Monument for serene sights and tide-pooling fun. The drive itself has beautiful ocean and city views. Spot sea urchins and starfish at the tide pools (turn right after you enter the ranger station and go all the way down towards the ocean).
Insider Tip: The next California King Tides (the lowest and highest tides of the year) will be December 23-24, 2022 and January 21-22, 2023. This is when you can explore the coastline during the lowest tide of the year—exposing sea life that is normally hidden. And even if you miss these dates, winter is still the best time to go tidepooling and see all the sealife and animals living on our coastline.
Seaport Village is fun for the whole family. Here you’ll find interesting local shops where your little elves can scope out some treasures. Plus, who doesn’t love a walk by the seaside and patio dining near the ocean? Specific tenant hours will vary but in general, Seaport Village is expected to be open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Be a tourist for the day and take a boat tour of the bay. This is the perfect way to spend the holiday with out-of-town visitors, especially if grandma or grandpa would prefer more of a "sitting" activity, while still seeing the sights and spending time with the family. Reserve a Christmas Day brunch (kids 3 and under are free) or dinner cruise, or just hop on for an hour-long sightseeing cruise that includes whale-watching cruises this month too.
Balboa Park is open 24 hours a day to walk around and you’ll even find some museums are open too! Enjoy the free open-air gardens and beautiful architecture. There are often food vendors and street performers (they may not be here on Christmas Day). The carousel and mini-train ($3 each) are open on holidays too; you’ll find them at the end of Spanish Village.
Find peace and tranquility in these beautifully landscaped gardens. There’s a smooth flat trail that meanders from the top down into the bottom of the ravine so it’s perfect for strollers, walkers, and wheelchairs. You’ll pass bamboo water fountains, koi fish pond, Japanese sculptures, bonsai trees as you go over arched bridges and jump across the stepping stones. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. with the last admission at 3 p.m. and good to know—kids 6 and under are free.
What better day than Christmas to avoid the crowds and check out one of San Diego's top museums—the Fleet Science Center? Open 365 days a year, it's open on Christmas Day from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Their hands-on science exhibits will amaze any age (push buttons are self-sanitizing after every push!), check out their new DigitalMe and Automata exhibits and kids 5 and under will love playing in Kid City.
They just upgraded their IMAX dome screen to a laser projection; which means they’re now showing Blockbuster movies on their IMAX! On Christmas Day you can even watch the new release of Spider-Man: No Way Home (buy tickets early). You can always watch their beautiful short wildlife films; which are perfect kid-length shows, that are narrated by top actors like Morgan Freeman and Ryan Reynolds (currently Into America’s Wild, Great Bear Rainforest & Turtle Odyssey). They even have popcorn, snacks, and drinks.
Insider Tip: For any guests with difficulty walking, you should consider taking one of the guided bus tours, where you can sit down and still see a lot of animals.
Spend some family time at SeaWorld this holiday during their Christmas Celebration. All of their fun and educational animal shows have a really cute holiday twist to them. Watch their new Santa’s Cirque or Elmo’s Christmas Wish shows, head to Santa’s Cottage for Santa photos, dance through the light tunnel with synchronized music and catch their fireworks show 10 minutes before park closing.

Good to Know: Leave the car at home! You can take the train from LA’s Union Station to Santa Barbara. The Pacific Surfliner route offers daily round-trip service from either Los Angeles or San Diego to Santa Barbara. And once you get there, the station is just a 4-minute walk (0.2 miles) to the Funk Zone.

It might sound completely touristy, but the 90-minute Architectural Boat Tour is by far one of the best activities for visitors to Chicago. All while cruising the Chicago River, attendees can learn the fascinating stories behind more than 50 buildings and discover how Chicago grew from a small settlement into one of the world's largest cities, as told by an expertly trained volunteer docent. If you can hang, we recommend taking one of the tours that will be cruising when the sun sets—it makes the ride extra magical.

This production makes history accessible to kids, young and old, and seeing the show live is well worth it (no matter how many times your little fans have seen it on Disney+). The Washington State Fair is back for another season of rides, games, and all the fair food your tummy can handle over Labor Day weekend. This year, we know the kids won't want to miss the exciting (and totally new) Expedition: Dinosaurs exhibit. Ten animatronic dinosaurs are the stars of this show, that also features interactive displays and a chance for kids to dig for fossils. Also new this year is the a look back at the Fair's 120-year history, and the Biggest Little Show—miniature animals we're sure your minis will fall for. Don't forget to take a spin on the expanded SillyVille train before taking in all the sights and sounds of SillyVille with your tots.
As for amazing Fair food, you'll want to sink your teeth into some quirky new finds at the Extreme Carnival Eats booth. It's the place to be if you've ever wondered what a donut burger or Korean mozzarella sticks taste like. You'll also be able to enjoy Glow Tea and Raspados Del Sur as part of this year's food lineup.

Take the fast ferry to Bremerton to enjoy the city's annual Bremerton Blackberry Festival. It's back for 2022 and will feature the same blackberry treats it always does, plus outdoor music, art demos, and fun activities that will really make it feel like summer's never gonna end. Don't forget to check out the super cool splash pad (on the other side of the ferry) where submarine sculptures erupt with water every few minutes. It's pretty much the coolest splash pad in town.

Watch an International Surf Competition
Surf's up at Lakeside Surf in Lake Chelan. Hit the road over your Labor Day weekend and enjoy the last weekend of summer at this hot spot that overlooks the lake and the mountains. Lakeside, home to the world's largest stationary wave, is hosting the Continental Surf Cup. It's a chance for you and the kids to see Team USA take on Team Europe as they battle it out on the water. Thirty-two surfers will compete over two days (Sep. 3 & 4) in both individual and group surfs to see who will take home the big prize (and serious bragging rights) and claim victory for their country.

There's a reason that this neighboring state is at the top of the list for Boston families. The Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are definite family favorites. You can learn about history when you visit Revolutionary War spots like Fort Griswold and the Nathan Hale Homestead. Outdoor wonders like Sleeping Giant State Park and the kid-favorite Dinosaur State Park are destinations on their own. Adventure junkies will want to spend some time at Connecticut's first aerial adventure park, the Adventure Park at the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport.
We love Nantucket any time of year but especially when the sun is out and the swimsuits are on. Kids will love a visit here because it involves everyone's favorite—a ferry ride. Once you get there, you can spend the day at Children's Beach, catch some dinner on a critter cruise, catch fiddler crabs at Masquetuck Reservation and dine on lobster at the Lobster Trap.
When the woods are calling, Boston families head to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Just short of three hours away, there are loads of outdoor adventures to be had in the summer. Ride to the top of Mount Washington on the World’s first mountain-climbing cog railway, the Mount Washington Cog Railway. Little ones will enjoy a visit to Story Land, the children’s theme park where fairy tales come to life. Adventure seekers will love zooming down the Mountain Coaster or flying on the Soaring Eagle Zip Ride at Cranmore Mountain Resort.
Beaches and lobsters, what more could you want? Kennebunkport has that and more with the cutest downtown you've seen and history around every corner. Visit the Bush family exhibit at Walker's Point and then check out the Seashore Trolley Museum, the first and largest electric trolley museum in the world. Don't miss the opportunity to head out on the water by renting a power boat or even a house boat. Or, try your luck as a lobsterman on a lobster boat tour.
This quaint beach town is a perfect family destination when you're looking for ocean breezes and relaxing in the sun. Head to Narragansett Town Beach or one of the nearby state beaches to stake out your spot in the sun. Check out the Point Judith lighthouse that was erected in 1816. Be sure to plan some time to hop on the ferry to explore nearby Block Island where you can go birdwatching and hike the Mohegan Bluffs.
There's something for every kind of family in western Massachusetts. The Norman Rockwell Museum is located in nearby Stockbridge. In addition to showcasing much of the artist's iconic work, the museum mounts exhibitions dedicated to illustration and new perspectives on Rockwell's work. Additionally, you can visit the small workshop where he did much of his painting. If you like your art with more edge, head to Mass MoCA in North Adams, the largest contemporary art center in the country. Kids can really roam free here. The center houses several works by light artist James Turrell, and its three floors of Sol Lewitt galleries are impressive. Mass MoCA also has a Kidspace with rotating exhibits and programming, allowing kids to get in on the art-making action.
Burlington, Vermont is located on Lake Champlain so you can check out both destinations in one trip. Kiddos will know that this is where the Vermont Teddy Bears come from so be sure to add that and the World's Tallest Filing Cabinet to your must-see list. ECHO should also be on that list as it's a totally-rad kids' museum with STEM exhibits, live animals and loads of other things to explore. When you're ready for some outside time, Lake Champlain offers lots of opportunities for kayaking, swimming, boating and lazy lake days.
Not only is Albany the state capital of New York, but it's a pretty fun place to bring kids who are interested in history. Visit the USS Slater, a WWII war ship that offers one-hour tours and then head to the Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site, home to Philip J. Schuyler, the renowned Revolutionary War general, US Senator, and business entrepreneur. Step back in time and head to Huck Finn's Playland. This amusement part has an awesome retro feel and is especially fun for the little ones.

Upon her retirement, she was converted into a passenger vessel and operated tours in Sturgeon Bay, WI for almost 30 years. Her new owners renovated the retired fireboat and she is now cruising the Chicago waterways once again!

Get back into nature with a good coastal hike at Annie’s Slot Canyon in Solana Beach. He’ll love hiking through the slots and climbing up the ladders for unforgettable ocean views at the top. Head to nearby family-friendly CUCINA enoteca Del Mar to fill up on Italian food after a day of hiking.
Walk through the footsteps of San Diego’s founding fathers in Old Town and see how families lived when the pioneers settled here. Check out the old working storefronts, the courthouse, the one-room school house, the old jail cell, La Casa de Estudillo and other homesteads to get a glimpse back in time. Hop on board a scenic train ride through the Campo countryside for an out-an-back adventure. The Pacific Southwest Railroad Museum offers several weekend-only train rides and even a sunset ride. Before or after your train ride, head to nearby Campo Creek Vineyards for a family-friendly mellow wine tasting. It’s only 10 minutes away and kids will love running around petting all the cats or playing bocce ball, while parents can order a charcuterie board to go along with your tastings.

Load up the bikes for a bayside cruise along the scenic Bayshore Bikeway. This is a closed biking trail, meaning it’s not alongside a road so it’s safer for kids to ride on without the worry of cars zooming by. You’ll have views of the South Bay and can ride it up through the Silver Strand. Either ride over or pack up the bikes and drive over to the Imperial Beach Pier for dinner. You’ll find plenty of restaurants and ice cream shops to fill up after your ride, but the Tin Fish at the end of the IB Pier makes for a unique dining experience over the ocean.

It’s always fun to play tourist and the SEALS Boat Tour would be something you’ll never forget. Take this open-aired amphibious vehicle for a tour around the city and then be amazed as it drives right into the water for a tour around the bay. With spring starting to bloom and more sun in our skies, now’s the time for Seattle families to enjoy local outdoor tours. More than an opportunity to get kids outside, these guided (and a few self-guided) nature and farm tours let kids learn about everything from native plants and wildlife to what life is like on a farm. Calling all future farmers or budding gardeners! This family friendly tour helps visitors understand sustainable farm practices. As you wander the fields you'll learn best practices for healthy soil, air and water. Families will also learn how to produce vegetables, herbs and other food, great skills to bring to your home garden. We love that there are taste tests along the way, and that kids will have the chance to meet some farm animals up close. Plan to spend about an hour on the outing ad dress for it too.

Get to know Juanita Bay Park and the amazing wildlife that call this 110-acre oasis home. On the first Sunday of the month, families can join Park Rangers from the Eastside Audubon Society to see how many critters you can you spot in their natural habitat around the park. Psst...binoculars are the most fashionable accessory for this trip. Wondering what you'll see along this tour? Keep your eyes peeled for amphibians, turtles, raptors and beavers as you walk the peaceful trails and listen to the rangers. If the timing doesn't work for you, you can always bring your wild bunch to tour the park on your own. You'll find helpful interpretive signs along the trail so you can learn as you go.

Bring Binoculars to Go Birding

Bird enthusiasts will want to breakout their binoculars and register early for this seasonal spring bird watching tour at Discovery Park. You'll need to register in advance for these guided walks where families hope to see birds returning to the Pacific Northwest where they make their summer home. Better than spotting them in your backyard, it's a chance for kids to learn about birds that live in our area year-round. If self-guided is more your thing, check out the Salmon Bay Walking Tour that runs from the Environmental Learning Center through the Locks and eventually ends at Golden Gardens. It's another chance to enjoy the rich eco-system of the Salmon Bay area.
Good to know: Discovery Park is also a salmon spying hot spot during the spawning season, from March through October.

For families looking to keep their own pace on a nature hike that includes a history lesson, head to Seward Park. The Seward Park self-guided tour will loop families around the shoreline of the park and through trails to learn about the full history of the area—from family ownership, to city land, with stops that show bed rock, special trees and plants, as well as what remains of an old hatchery from 1935. This means flexibility to go the full loop or end early at a park bench for snack time.

Explore with a Naturalist

Take a trip south to visit the Tacoma Nature Center and learn about native plants and animals that live along Snake Lake. These tours are led by a naturalist, and usually last just under an hour, the perfect time from for the littlest explorers. Along the waterfront you'll see frogs, turtles, birds and maybe even snakes. Add in learning about the native plants and you'll feel like a true brainiac by the time the tour is over. Bonus: Each group receives a laminated guide to use on future hikes, which will make the kids experts by the year's end. To secure your favorite date, be sure to book two weeks in advance. Don't forget to stop at the nature playground before you head home.

As Seattle’s largest urban farm, Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands' community site gives families an opportunity to learn about farming and the natural wetlands of the area. It is co-operated by Friends of Rainier Beach Park and Tilth Alliance. Families can take a self-guided tour by playing Wetland Bingo and casually visit the site to tour the crops around the farm. You'll find u-pick plots and a family of four bald eagles nesting in a tree nearby, among other animals that frequent the area. The farm's Facebook page is where you'll find more educational opportunities and updated information on community programs.
