We all want our children to grow up to be good people. We all want them to be proud and strong. We want them to be good citizens. And, we want them to be kind. National Random Acts of Kindness Day, which is held annually on February 17, is all about doing good for others, but it also sparks an opportunity to celebrate and practice kindness with children all year round.

Scientific evidence supports that doing kind acts for others is good for us and helps decrease feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression. Engaging children in performing kind acts build up their ability to show compassion for others and helps create healthy, supportive communities where they can live and grow.

My fellow education experts teamed up with Kiddie Academy’s corporate social responsibility team to craft a list of activities your child can do to spread kindness and brighten someone’s day.

1. Pick up litter in your neighborhood. Teach your kids to be kind to the Earth and give love to the environment by picking up trash, such as plastic or paper that may be harmful to animals and plants.

2. Write a friend a thoughtful note. Have your child hand write a note to their best buddy describing what they like about them. It’s sure to put a smile on their face.

3. Hold the door open for someone. This little act of kindness goes a long way. Instruct your kids to hold the door for the person behind them, smile, and say hello. It may just make their day.

4. Draw a picture for a relative or a friend. Art is a great way to get the creative juices flowing while also spreading kindness. Have your kids draw photos for friends or relatives.

5. Read a book with a sibling. If you have multiple children, encourage them to spend quality time together by reading a bedtime story. It will remind them both that they have a built-in friend no matter what.

6. Help clean up after a meal. The cook of the family will appreciate it if you teach your kids to bring the finished plates to the sink. It’s also a great way to get kids involved in mealtime.

7. Clean up your playroom. Encourage kids to take some off of mom and dad’s plate by spending a few minutes putting toys and books away.

8. Leave a box of chalk at the playground or write a kind chalk message on the neighborhood sidewalk. Spread kindness within your community in a socially distant way by having your kids write positive memos such as, “Be yourself and have a great day!” for the neighborhood to see and enjoy.

9. Write a “thank-you” note to local essential workers, like first responders and health care workers. Give back kindness to the people who help keep us safe everyday by encouraging your kids to tell essential workers how much they appreciate everything they do.

10. Make a friendship bracelet for a friend. Teach your child to use yarn and beads to create a fun and vibrant bracelet for a friend. It’s a fun way to show appreciation for one another.

A child is never too young to adopt the fundamentals of good character. These acts of kindness, among many others, teach a child that they can change the course of someone’s day and make an impact. You never know where kindness will take you!

Your tween wants to pay on the go just like you do. Even though you’re not ready to hand over a credit card, you do have options.

The PurewristGO bracelet is an easy way for kids to make contactless payments almost anywhere. Purewrist’s bracelet gives kids (and parents too!) the ability to tap-and-pay in retail, grocery, convenience, and other stores that offer this type of contact-free feature. The best part is, you can load funds onto their bracelet and monitor their spending.

If your child is like most tweens or teens, they’re just starting to learn money management skills. This can make shopping solo a challenge. The PurewristGO’s account gives you the option to add or decrease the funds your child has access to—and all from your phone. You can also use your smart phone to monitor what your tween or teen spends their pre-paid funds on.

The waterproof bracelets are available in a rainbow of colors and don’t require charging for use. Made from SGS certified, eco-friendly, non-toxic silicone, these bracelets combine quality and environmental consciousness.

Bracelets start at $35, $10 of which is preloaded so you can start shopping right away. To nab a PurewristGO bracelet, visit the brand’s website here.

Teaching Kids About Money-Management: Real Tips You’ll Actually Use

Let’s give thanks this Thanksgiving for these Bay Area kids and teenagers who are showing us that even the smallest voices can make a world of change. We hope that you share these stories with your kids and let them be inspired to do good in their community. Giving back to your community doesn’t have to be a big effort, kids can start small with many different opportunities for kids to volunteer at home. Our community thanks you!

Teddy's for Tots—Cali Martire

Saratoga 4th grader Cali Martire started Teddy's For Tots when she was just five years old with a mission to make sure all children at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital received a teddy bear for Christmas! It all began with a question: “How does Santa get the toys to the sick kids in the hospital?" From this moment, Cali made it her mission to make sure that every child at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford had a Teddy Bear on Christmas morning. Since 2016, Cali has inspired the donation of 2,500 teddy bears (and counting!)

Now in its fifth year, Teddy's for Tots has expanded in 2020 to provide gifts to children in the Santa Clara County foster care system. You can support this worthy cause by shopping the Teddy's for Tots donation page through December 1 and spreading a little holiday cheer!

The Giving Fruits—Jean-Pierre Mouloudj

Bay Area insiders know that if you want the freshest produce and local products (like pastries, honey and fresh-made ice cream), you need to get in on the bi-weekly group orders from Giving Fruits. This Palo Alto group blossomed out of a community desire to support local farmers who weren't able to get their precious products to customers due to COVID-19.

The weekly management from compiling orders to organizing volunteers is all done by Palo Alto High School senior, Jean-Pierre Mouloudj. Jean-Pierre has really taken the reigns on this massive project even when school went back into session this fall. He also started a club at Paly to support Giving Fruits and get other high schoolers involved.

Not only does purchases through Giving Fruits support local farmers, but profits from the purchases go to support frontliners and food trucks, two other groups greatly impacted by COVID-19. They also support local shelters like LifeMoves and Women’s Shelter by hhcollab.org, the South Palo Alto Food Closet, Dreamers Road Map and starting this week the Ecumenical Hunger Program.

Join the Facebook group to find out what's on the menu for this week's pickup!

Andy Soulard

When 6-year-old Andy Soulard learned that the Oakland Zoo was in jeopardy of closing permanently due to COVID-19 she went into action. Starting with $5 she had received from the tooth fairy, Andy started a fundraising campaign that raised over $225,000 for the zoo. For every donor who donated over $25, Andy would send them a bracelet and drawing that she made. She also recently asked for Oakland Zoo donations in lieu of gifts for her 7th birthday. If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we all cope with uncertainty in different ways. For cousins Sabrina Haechler & Jessica Bukowski, quarantine led them to channel their energy into helping others. Their new project called resilienSEED features handmade bracelets with words spelled out in Morse Code using seed beads. Profits from all the bracelets are donated to causes that align with Sabrina and Jessica’s values. Read on to find out more about resilienSEED and these charming bracelets that are handmade with love.

What are resilienSEED bracelets and who makes them?
Handbeaded in Mill Valley, California, resilienSEED bracelets are simple, stylish and functional. They’re made out of waxed polyester, which makes them totally waterproof. You can adjust them to fit all wrist sizes and they can also slip easily on and off.

The cousins tell us, “We’re super fortunate to have a lot of help from our relatives, many of whom live nearby. On any given day, there’s a good chance that you’ll find our parents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and cousins helping us out with beading. So many great things have come from resilienSEED, including the bonding of our family during the pandemic.”

Where do the profits go?
To date, resilienSEED has raised around $1,500. Sabrina and Jessica explain that, “originally, we were focused on raising money for COVID-19 relief. We chose to donate to the Child Mind Institute’s COVID-19 response after Emma Davidson, a family member and Psychotherapist, spoke to us about the importance of mental health, especially during these uncertain times. After a month of launching resilienSEED, we realized that we could have a greater impact in our community. Now, we stay up-to-date on current events, and we’ve expanded to raising money and awareness for social justice (Campaign Zero), LBGTQ+ suicide prevention (The Trevor Project), and tuition for children affected by cancer (The Forever 49 Foundation).”

Designs and custom orders
Choose from 10 different designs with empowering words like “Strength”, “Love”, “Unite” and “Justice” spelled out in Morse Code.

The dynamic duo reveal, “We knew that we wanted each type of bracelet to represent something different, which is why we use seed beads. Each bracelet is beaded with two different colors of seed beads, which collectively spell out a word in Morse Code.”

resilienSEED also accepts custom orders for $10. We ordered a bracelet with our kids’ names spelled out in Morse Code.

Order yours at resilienseedbracelets.weebly.com/. Prices start at $6, inclusive of shipping.
