First Things First: At What Age Can Your Baby Fly?

You may be ready to show off your new addition to long-distance relatives, but pediatricians recommend waiting until your baby is at least three months old—or had their first set of shots—before traveling by plane. Even though airplane air is filtered before it is recirculated, it is still a closed cabin full of people, and that might pose a challenge for brand-new immune systems. That said, common sense precautions are what doctors advise once babies are old enough to fly

"In general, I think flying is relatively safe," said Los Angeles pediatrician Elle Raker. "I’d prefer everyone else was still masking, but unfortunately, that’s changed." Raker recommends maintaining social distancing when traveling, if possible, and keeping your hands and nearby surfaces clean while aboard the plane. That means sanitize, sanitize, sanitize! Booking Your Flight: The Best Time and Day to Fly with a Baby

The flight you choose—what time and what day—can make all the difference when you've got a pint-sized plane partner. So follow these guidelines to set yourself up for smooth travels:

Book your flight for a Tuesday or Wednesday
According to Airadvisor.com, flights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays are almost always cheaper and less filled than flights that bookend weekends or on Saturdays and Sundays. This means you'll have a better chance of having an empty seat next to you (which is like winning the lottery when it comes to flying with the fam).

Fly direct—or choose a long layover 
Ear pain tends to be worse on takeoff and landing—so minimize these painful times for your baby by choosing a direct flight! Flying direct also minimizes the number of dirty airport floors your little explorer will want to crawl all over. If you can't bear the thought of 17 hours on an airplane, try to book a layover that allows you to spend the night (or two!) in your layover city rather than just waiting at the airport. This gives you and your brood a chance to recoup and explore a new city. That's what Mommy travel blogger Carrie Bradley, former flight attendant and founder of FlyingWithABaby, advises. "I prefer breaking up the journey just so everybody can get some rest," Bradley said. "We like to take like 48 hours and make it a mini vacation."

Pick a morning flight
Regardless of your baby's sleep schedule, Travel & Leisure says morning flights are the only flights you should book since they are the least likely to be delayed or canceled. Early morning flights are usually less bumpy, which means more time letting your little one out of the car seat to explore the cabin (a must for new walkers). If that isn't possible, and you've got a by-the-clock napper, book a flight that coincides with nap time.

Where to Sit On the Plane when Flying with a Baby

Where you sit on the plane matters! If you're able to choose your seats for the flight, here are some things to consider:

If it's an option, get a bassinet seat (located at the bulkhead seats) 
Got a baby under six months? Many long-haul or international flights offer travel bassinets that clip into the wall of the bulkhead seats. These can be lifesavers for harried parents (and exhausted infants). To score these seats, you'll need to book your seats super early. The rules vary by airline, but most bassinets are only available for infants under the age of one and less than 25 pounds. Book a window and aisle seat and hope for an empty row
Middle seats are always the last to be picked on a plane, so reserving a window and aisle ups the chances that you'll get all three seats to yourself (Note: You can even do this if you're flying with a family of four; just book two windows/aisle seats). You can always switch if someone does book that seat between you.

Don't put your baby in the aisle seat 
Passengers in the aisle are in the line of fire should luggage fall from the overhead bins during a flight (this happens more than you'd think, with an estimated 4,500 travelers hit by falling airplane luggage each year). These seats can also be risky for little ones who may get their fingers or feet pinched by carts coming through the aisles. Babies and children are safest in the middle or window seats.

Don't sit right next to the bathrooms, but don't sit too far away, either!
Sitting too close to the bathroom means your sleeping baby may be startled awake by the crowd noise after mealtimes (when most people go to the bathrooms). But don't sit too far from one, either; you want to be able to dash to the changing table when blowouts strike.

Seats over the wing are the least turbulent 
If you are worried about turbulence, a seat near the wings will offer the smoothest ride. This makes a difference when you're trying to aim a little spoon into your finicky baby's mouth during feeding time.

What To Know About Getting Through Security

Airport security lines aren't fun for anyone, but they're extra stressful when you're contending with wandering toddlers or fussy infants. Here are some tips to help you prepare for (or avoid!) the wait: 

Formula & breast milk are allowed on your carry-on
Nursing and pumping mamas, relax! According to TSA press secretary Carter Langston, you can bring your breast milk through the security lines—even if the baby is not with you at the time (such as if you're away on business and want to bring that "liquid gold" home for your baby). This is because the TSA considers formula and breast milk "medically necessary liquids," which are allowed in carry-on baggage in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces (that's the limit on other, non-medically necessary liquids). As of July 2022, the TSA also updated its guidelines online to add that ice packs, freezer packs, gel ice packs, and similar items required to cool medically necessary liquids are also allowed through security.  

Baby food is OK
Food pouches and jars of baby food are also considered medically necessary, so they're also exempt from the 3.4 ounces rules.

It's easy to get TSA approved 
If you think getting TSA PreCheck status is a difficult process, we're here to tell you it's not! A quick online application and an in-person interview are all you need to do to get what is essentially a "fast pass" through the security lines. Kids don't have to take off their shoes
If your kids are under 12, they don't have to remove their shoes when going through security.

Ask if there's a TSA Family screening line
Many large airports have a special security line for families. The signage may not be obvious, so ask a security representative to direct you if you're not sure.

Take your baby out of her stroller or car seat  
This is another reason to keep your baby awake until you get aboard the plane. Babies must be carried through security (though they can be carried on you in a sling) with strollers and car seats going through the X-ray machine separately. (Strollers that don't fit through the X-ray machine will have to be inspected manually.)

Children under 18 don't need a passport or ID to fly in the United States—but they DO need a passport to fly internationally
To apply for a passport, go to travel.state.gov to download the forms. And don't wait! According to the U.S. Passport Office, it takes 10-13 weeks to process a new passport and "expedited" passports take 4-6 weeks. You must bring your documents to your local passport office (you can't mail them in), and both parents need to be present (or have a notarized form saying why they're not).

Packing for a flight with babies and toddlers requires a LOT of prep work. Wipes? Check! Diapers? Check! Sanity? TBD. Here's a checklist of things to put in your carry-on when flying with a baby: 

The Essentials: 

    • Baby carrier/ sling - Even if you brought a stroller through the airport, a carrier is a great way to go hands-free in the airplane while your little one snoozes. Many a mom has strapped that baby to their bellies even when making a restroom trip. Trust us: you'll be happy to have your hands. 
    • Pacifiers/comfort items - If your baby uses a pacifier, bring at least four of them on the plane (they WILL be dropped).  
    • Breast milk, formula, baby food - Most airlines won't provide special meals for babies, so be sure you bring everything your baby will need for the flight (and extras in case there are any delays or if you're stuck on the tarmac). 
    • Feeding supplies - Bibs, spoons, bottles, bowls (these bowls that stick to surfaces work great with the tray table)
    • Finger foods - Never underestimate the power of food to keep your baby busy. Light finger foods like puffs or teething crackers are great because they can keep on nibbling without getting too full. 
    • Wipes - Separate from the wipes you'll put in your changing kit, an extra pack of wipes is essential for all those other times you'll be cleaning up your baby (and yourself). 
    • Changing items - Diapers, wipes, changing pad. Bring double the number of diapers and wipes that your baby usually uses in the period you expect to be traveling. Tip: Keep all changing items in a separate bag (Ziploc bags work great) so you can easily grab them from your carry-on and dash to the bathroom. 
    • Pull-ups, if your baby can stand - These make diaper changes way easier since you don't have to lay your toddler down on that tiny table in the tiny airplane bathroom. 
    • Toys - For younger babies, rattles, teething toys, and other sensory toys will keep your baby entertained for short spurts; older kids may want books, dolls, or puppets.  
    • Clips to keep toys/pacifiers from falling - If your baby is anything like every baby ever, they'll be tossing said comfort item overboard shortly after they get a hold of it. Toy clips like these are an easy fix.
    • Baby pain relief/medications - Bring a small "emergency bag" stocked with liquid baby pain relief (Tylenol for babies of any age; Advil for babies over six months), gas drops, and any medications your baby may need. 
    • Burp cloths 
    • Nursing pillow (we recommend the My Brest Friend) - This may be cumbersome to carry around, but it can work as a comfy bed for your baby post-feed (and you can pass the sleeping baby to your partner easily when your baby is asleep on the pillow) It also has an attached cup-holder for when Mom or Dad gets thirsty, too. 
    • Sanitizing wipes/ tray covers - Your baby—and especially your toddler—will want to touch everything their little fingers can reach. So be sure to bring plenty of wipes and wipe down all nearby surfaces. For the trays, disposable tray covers are great, too.
    • Muslin cloth - These are great for covering babies when they're sleeping or as a nursing cover. They're also nice to cover the baby's head if they are getting overstimulated by the busy surroundings. 
    • Blankets - One for comfort and warmth and another for the floor at the airport.
    • Extra clothes for baby AND parents (because blowouts happen!) - Choose clothes that are easy to take on and off (no buttons!) and bring layers for when the cabin swings from cold to hot and vice-versa. 
    • Ziploc bags for wet/soiled clothes. 
    • Car seat (and car seat stroller for the airport)- If you are buying your baby a seat (recommended, but not mandatory), bring your car seat so your baby has a comfortable, familiar place to nap. This also helps to get your baby (and your stuff) comfortably around the airport. You can gate-check the stroller part when you get on the plane, and it'll be ready for you when you step off. 

Note: The American Academy of Pediatrics says the safest way for your baby to fly is in an FAA-approved car seat or airplane harness device approved for your child's age and size installed with the airplane's seat belt. Booster seats cannot be used on airplanes.

Gadgets Worth Buying (but not necessary)

  • Wraparound headphones - Older babies and toddlers will love being able to hear songs or stories with these wraparound fleece headphones that won't easily slide off and also keep your baby's head warm. 
  • Lap baby - Carrie Bradley of Flyingwithababy.com called this "a really useful product for babies of all ages." It works like a seat belt to keep babies over three months secure on your lap so you can be hands-free and baby can be comfortable.  
  • The Flyaway travel bed - This L-shaped inflatable mattress lets toddlers lie flat and sleep aboard the plane. It also works to fill the floor space so that items your toddler is playing with don't plunge into the abyss of the airplane floor. For a less-expensive option, these inflatable footrest pillows do the same thing.
  • Travel play tray - This tray attaches to the airplane tray table and has raised edges to keep small toys from sliding off the tray (it also covers that dirty tray table). It's also useful for toddlers who like to play with crayons or other small items.

Airline Perks You Should Know About When Flying with a Baby

Sure, flying with a baby can be a challenge—but it's not all a drag! Some airlines offer special perks to families traveling with babies and toddlers, including:

Baby and toddler meals
Most airlines offer a kids' meal that you can order ahead of time, but only a few airlines (mostly international) will serve a specialized baby or toddler meal. These usually consist of jarred baby food or meals that are soft and easy to chew. Qantas, Air France, Emirates, Eva Air, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines, and Singapore Airlines are some of the airlines that offer this, according to this article from Flyingwithababy.

Bassinet seats
As mentioned above, many long-haul flights offer bassinets (mostly suitable for babies under one) that can clip into the bulkhead wall. These seats usually cost more, since they're in the bulkhead row, but are worth it for parents of finicky little sleepers.

Priority boarding for families
When you hear that announcement that "families with young children are welcome to board," grab your roller suitcases and go! Getting all those essential carry-on items in position is crucial, especially if you'll have stuff in the overhead compartments that you'll need to access mid-flight. If you're worried about your antsy toddlers, traveling mommy blogger Samantha Brown recommends having one parent stay in the terminal with the kids while the other boards with the stuff. That way, the littles can run around, then get on the plane after getting all their wiggles out.

Free toys and activity kits
You read that right—free toys! According to Conde Nast Traveler, Lufthansa, Emirates, Nippon Airways, British Airways, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Etihad, and Japan Airlines are among those who give out free kits for tiny passengers. These kits can include everything from stuffed animals and stickers to play dough and puzzles. Just ask the flight attendant when you board.

Worst-Case Scenarios: What To Do If…

Your baby may be all smiles at the airport, but what do you do if everything changes mid-air? 

Ear pain
If your baby is crying and tugging at her ears—or if the crying started just as the plane took off—it could be an earache. Give your baby a pain reliever that's safe for their age—Tylenol (acetaminophen) is safe at any age; Advil (ibuprofen) is safe for babies over six months. You can also ask the flight attendant for a cup of warm water and a washcloth; holding a warm, moist towel against the baby's ear may help relieve the pain. Also, keep your baby sucking or chewing since this can help equalize ear pressure.

*The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against giving Benadryl to children ages two and under unless it is directed by their doctors. 

Vomiting
If your child vomits while on the plane, the protocol is the same as if you were on land: give sips of breastmilk or formula (or water) to prevent dehydration. You can also ask the flight attendants for some washcloths to put on your child (and you) to keep the clothing changes and seat mess to a minimum. Thankfully, children under two rarely get motion sickness, so your chances that a bumpy flight will lead to a troubled tummy are small.

Teething
Liquid pain relievers can help, as well as teething toys.

Nonstop crying
If no amount of peekaboo, feeding, or rocking can ease your baby's cries, all you can do is try to relax. "Make sure you stay calm," says mommy blogger Jennifer Durban in this Howcast video. "If you're stressed out, your baby will be stressed out, so try your best to relax." She also suggested getting up and walking around the cabin. "It's amazing how fascinating a bathroom can be to a little one."

Remember: Flying with a Baby Is Only Temporary

You've packed. You've prepped. You've fed, rocked, and cuddled. Still, when it comes to air travel, it's anyone's guess how your new little human will react to the experience. So what do you do if nothing "works" and your baby is that baby, the one who cries the whole flight? 

"I try to tell other parents you may think everybody is looking at you—and you may feel these eyes peering—but they’re not," said Bradley, who has taken her two young daughters on international flights since they were both infants. "You just relax and do your thing, and remember that it will end. It's not forever. Just concentrate on your family."  

Bradley said it's also important to remember that it's not the kids who generally cause the most problems on board. "Sure, kids cry and it can be irritating—I get that," she said. "But it’s mostly fully grown adults we’ve had bigger problems with." 

And she said it's OK for parents to ask the flight attendants for help. "Even if the flight crew aren’t parents, they can help. It’s what they do," she said, adding that, as a flight attendant, she held many a baby when the parents just needed a break to use the bathroom or have a bite to eat. "I would always tell parents, 'I'm happy to hold your baby.'"

You may want to celebrate your new addition with some new ink, but experts agree it’s best to wait

Tattoos are an important form of self-expression for so many people, and the itch to get some new ink doesn’t go away just because you’ve had a new baby. In fact, you might feel even more compelled to memorialize your tiny new addition. But parents quickly learn that lifestyle changes (no alcohol, different exercise, even giving up your beloved salmon sashimi) go hand in hand with pregnancy and life after baby, so where do tattoos fit into the picture? And more specifically, can you get a tattoo while breastfeeding? We spoke to three lactation consultants, a pediatrician, and a primary care doctor to find out everything you need to know before heading to the tattoo parlor.

Can you get a tattoo while breastfeeding or chestfeeding?

Generally speaking, it’s not recommended to get a tattoo while breastfeeding. Little research has been done on the effects of tattoos on breastfeeding parents, according to Ashley Georgakopoulos, IBCLC, certified lactation consultant and lactation director at Motif Medical. That being the case, many health care providers and organizations recommend waiting to get new ink until baby is at least 9-12 months old or until they finish breastfeeding.

“Most tattoo artists are unlikely to tattoo a pregnant or breastfeeding woman,” says Sheila Janakos, Healthy Horizons founder and CEO. “Their waiver for signed consent will likely ask about these conditions.”

What are the risks of getting a tattoo while breastfeeding?

Infection is one of the greatest risks. “Both local and systemic infections can occur with tattoos,” says Dr. Navya Mysore, a primary care doctor. “Local infection occurs when there is an infection at the site of the tattoo and can occur from non-sterile equipment or poor aftercare. Systemic infection can occur from contaminated equipment where infections can enter the bloodstream, such as HIV, hepatitis or tetanus.”

Aside from infection, Mysore raises concern over the possibility of having an allergic reaction, most commonly to the red inks used in tattoos. “Any kind of infection or potential allergic reaction can compromise your breast milk supply and certain medications that treat these infections are incompatible with breastfeeding.”

Additionally, the anxiety some people feel about getting a tattoo may actually affect their ability to lactate. “For some moms, just thinking about the soreness from a tattoo could impact her ability to feed,” says Nicole Peluso, IBCLC, and manager of lactation education at Aeroflow Breastpumps. This kind of stress can impair a person’s ability to “let down” their milk.

Can tattoo ink affect your breastmilk?

According to Janakos, most experts agree that the actual ink itself is composed of molecules that are too large to enter into breast milk, though research from 2022 showed that the molecules in tattoo ink can be as tiny as 100 nanometers, which is small enough to pass through the cell membrane.

Additionally, the ink is typically made of lots of different components, some of which may contain heavy metals that could potentially pass into the bloodstream and enter the breast milk, says Janakos. Because it’s too risky to expose infants to these substances for the sake of research, the possible effects of tattoos on breast/chestfeeding aren’t studied or known.

With that in mind, Georgakopoulos says that it’s best to wait until the baby is weaned or is not 100% reliant on breastmilk to get a tattoo.

Is it less dangerous to get a tattoo when your baby is older?

Experts agree that it’s generally best to wait until your baby has weaned. In terms of the safety and well-being of the postpartum individual, Dr. Denise Scott, pediatrician and JustAnswer expert, recommends waiting at least seven to nine months before considering getting a tattoo.

“The adjustment of postpartum hormones may affect the speed at which the skin heals. Skin may heal slower when the body is prioritizing growing a baby, producing breast milk, or healing from a wound like a c-section,” explains Peluso. When the skin heals more slowly, it puts the person at a greater risk of infection as the tattooed skin is an open wound for longer.

Is it safe to get a tattoo removed while breastfeeding?

Tattoo removal is most commonly done using lasers, and it typically involves multiple treatments. “During the removal process, tattoo pigment molecules are filtered through the liver. There’s no hard evidence that tattoo particles could pass to your baby through breast milk during the removal process but we cannot be 100% sure,” says Mysore. “For that reason, I would recommend holding off until you have stopped breastfeeding.”

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, both doctors and lactation experts advise against getting a tattoo while breastfeeding. You’re better off waiting until your baby has outgrown breast milk and your body has recovered from the birthing process before thinking about getting some new ink. “The hospital is going to send you home with a peri bottle to help clean yourself when you go to the bathroom. If you can, just get one that’s upside down,” she says, with a picture onscreen of a bottle with an upward-facing nozzle. “Buy a separate one. Because then it squirts up at you so you’re not doing gymnastics when you’re going to the bathroom.”

Myers notes, as products #3 and #4, that the hospital will also send you home with pain and itch relief spray and witch hazel pads, but that it’s a good idea to stock up on both at home because you will run out.

The fifth item she mentions is a “quick-clean” sanitizing bag from Medela.

“You can reuse these 20 times,” Myers explains. “I exclusively pump and bottle feed, so I am constantly needing to wash my pump and wash bottles and I don’t want to wait for the dishwasher.” Instead, she says, she uses the sanitizing bags, which she can use in the microwave like a “mini dishwasher.”

Some of her other recommendations include a donut pillow for sitting on, a hospital-grade breast pump, and the Haakaa Ladybug, which she notes is shorter than the original Haakaa and more convenient because it doesn’t hang down while she uses it to collect breast milk. The last thing she recommends is a mini fridge to keep in the bedroom for storing milk for middle-of-the-night feedings, which saves her and her husband trips up and down the stairs and helps them get back to sleep faster (a game-changer when you have a newborn, of course).

As Myers notes, there are tons of other things she could share, because the list of things new moms could recommend to others is endless. But these do all sound like top-tier recs, and if they’ve helped her, they’re sure to help other moms.

Top jet lag prevention tip: try not to stress about it too much

You’ve packed. You’ve planned. You’ve crossed your fingers for no delays, cancellations, lost luggage, fevers, tantrums, accidents, earaches, or upset tummies.

But what about jet lag? Is there any way to prevent its trademark exhaustion from turning your otherwise cheerful jet-setter into a crabby, irritable mess?

“Exploring the world is fun, but having a cranky toddler dealing with jet lag isn’t,” sleep medicine physician and pediatric pulmonologist Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown said in an article on her website, Restful Sleep MD. “Toddlers and older kids tend to have a more challenging time as they adjust to the different time zones. While these adjustments only take a few days, they could be the longest days of your and your child’s travel experience.”

So what’s a globetrotting parent to do? From what time to fly and what to bring on board to what sorts of things to schedule on the first day of your trip,  here are a few expert tips for helping your kids (and you!) beat jet lag fast.

First of all: What is Jet Lag—And Why Does it Happen?

It’s not just because you didn’t sleep on the plane (though that doesn’t help). Jet lag happens when our body’s natural circadian rhythm gets mixed up by crossing multiple time zones. Basically: Your brain thinks it’s in one time zone (home); your body is in another (vacation). Not surprisingly, the more time zones you cross, the worse the jet lag.

Note: Jet lag does not occur on north-south flights that do not cross multiple time zones, according to The Sleep Foundation.

“When you travel across time zones, that internal clock is still in sync with your original time zone and out of sync with the new time zone,” Afolabi-Brown said in the article.

Symptoms of jet lag include exhaustion, brain fog irritability, headaches, and digestive upset (especially in children). And, depending on how you acclimate (and whether you follow the steps below), experts say it can take one day to adjust for every time zone crossed—though you likely won’t have all the symptoms for this long.

Does it happen for babies?  Yes! According to the Pediatric Sleep Council, babies are just as likely to experience jet lag as adults, though it may be less noticeable for babies under 6 months who don’t have a regular sleep schedule.

 

Tips to Prevent Jet Lag—Before Your Flight

1. Stay hydrated: Dehydration can make jet lag worse, so make sure your kids drink plenty of water (or formula/breast milk/etc.) before, during, and after a long flight. Caffeinated beverages can also contribute to dehydration, so if you’ve got older kids who like Coke or other caffeinated drinks, try to encourage them to choose non-caffeinated pop instead.

“I always try to make this fun for my kids. We make Kool-Aid the day before and we make sure to drink it all,” a mom blogger wrote on Jet Lagged Mama. “Then during the trip, we always let them pick out fun drinks either at gas stations or sometimes I will pack a few fun drinks in my carry-on.”

Note for parents: While you might want to drink a glass of wine to ease your nerves before and during a flight, alcohol can also make jet lag worse—so try to say no.

2. Prep for your destined time zone: If you know your destination is a few hours behind, don’t stress when your kids aren’t asleep at 11 p.m. as it’ll actually help them! Similarly, if you’re traveling to a place where it’s later than your home time zone, try to move your kids’ bedtime earlier as you get nearer to takeoff. (This is easier said than done, we know. So don’t stress!)

What You Can Do to Prevent Jet Lag—On The Plane

1. Pick your flight wisely. While some parents avoid red-eye flights (especially with younger children who may keep the whole cabin awake when they can’t sleep), many prefer to fly the night away because kids simply fall asleep better when they know it’s dark outside. Depending on when you’ll land, it’s good for your kids to sleep at least a little bit on the plane.

That said, if you know you’ll be landing at nighttime, you don’t want your kid to get a full night’s slumber on the airplane. To keep them from sleeping too much, pack games and “presents” for them to open to keep them entertained (this way they’ll be able to sleep when you get there). This is one of those times when screen time is your friend since blue light actually inhibits melatonin production and will help your kids stay awake longer.

2. Choose a flight that arrives in the daytime—and stay awake when. you get there! Getting to your destination during the day means you’re more likely to jump right into the new schedule. (Hint: Don’t take a nap when you get to your hotel!). Stay awake and relatively active when you arrive so that, by evening, your kids will be so pooped they’ll practically put themselves to bed.

“We typically take red eyes and then try to plan an activity close to when we land so it forces us to stay awake through the excitement of the activity,” said family travel Vlogger Trevi O’Neil from The Adventure Buddies. “Versus getting to your destination and then looking to sleep right away.”

3. If you have. a baby (and want them to sleep), get a bassinet seat. Sure, holding your baby while they sleep will do the trick, but if you want to catch some Zzzs yourself, it helps to have a place to put your little one. Many long-haul or international flights offer travel bassinets that clip into the wall of the bulkhead seats. The rules vary by airline, but most bassinets are only available for infants under the age of one and less than 25 pounds. 4. Pack these things: Even if you’ve got a like-clockwork sort of sleeper, getting kids to knock out on planes can be tough. So arm yourself with all the sleep-inducing extras you can fit in your carry-on. This could include:

  • Your child’s favorite blanket, pillow, and stuffie
  • Pajames (at least two sets, if you’re worried about accidents)
  • A mask to block out light (if your child will keep it on)
  • For babies in car seats: A cover or light blanket to block out light
  • For smaller children: This inflatable cushion which allows kids to put their feet up or lay flat in the seat (if allowed by your airline).

Tips to Prevent Jet Lag—At Your Destination

1. Follow the Light: One of the key strategies for helping kids beat jetlag is adjusting their exposure to light and dark, according to Kelly Murra, a certified pediatric and adult sleep consultant based in Los Angeles. “Light plays a crucial role in regulating our internal body clock,” Murra said. “When we travel across time zones, our body clock gets all confused, and that’s when jetlag kicks in.”

So use light to your advantage! If you arrive in the daytime, expose your child to natural light to help signal to the body that it’s daytime.”Encourage them to go outside, play in the sunlight, or simply have a stroll in a nearby park,” Murra said.

Then, when you wake up the next morning, get them some sunlight as soon as possible. For example, take a family walk, go to a playground, or push your baby around in the stroller.

“This will signal to their body that it is the new wake-up time by triggering the production of cortisol, the alert hormone, as well as program their body to produce melatonin, the sleepy hormone, earlier than it normally would,” according to Murra.

2. Limit the lights at nighttime: While getting your kids some sun helps acclimate them to daytime; when it’s nighttime in the new time zone, you want to do the opposite. Murra suggests limiting your kids’ exposure to bright lights in the evening, especially from screens like phones, tablets, or TVs. Turn off overhead lights and use lamps instead to create a softer light.

“Create a calming and dim environment, mimicking nighttime conditions,” she said. “This helps trigger the release of melatonin, a hormone that encourages sleep.

3. Stay awake! Sure, the first thing you’ll want to do when you arrive is lay down flat for a long nap. But… Resist! Afolabi-Brown advises not letting kids sleep more than two hours during the day for the first few days of your trip. Remember: You want them to be tired at nighttime. (Pssst: Same goes for you!). 

“The faster you get your sleep aligned with the new time zone, the faster you will get over your jet lag,” Jet Lagged Mama blogger said in this article. “So staying awake on your first day is extremely important.”

4. Keep kids moving (until bedtime): During the first two days, try to keep things busy so that kids are revved up until bedtime. Sure, there may be a few meltdowns, but if you stick it out, you’ll kick jet lag to the curb way faster. At least, that’s according to veteran traveler Katie Dillon, a writer who has flown across oceans with her daughter since she was 6 weeks old.

“If you can sleep through the night on nights one and two after flying overseas, the remaining nights will typically be easy peasy,” Dillon said on her website, LaJollamom.com. “Be strategic about how you keep them awake, and they’ll never know what you’re up to. It’s one of the best ways to ensure they don’t get jet lag, or it may last for just a night or two versus an entire week.”

5. Keep the activities mellow in the beginning:  The first day of your trip should be considered a “buffer day.” So keep things light. You want to be busy—but don’t do the big stuff that you know will take a lot out of you (and your kids). Go to the park or playground. Take a walk. Play games together outside. Remember, exposing yourself to the sun helps your body adjust faster, so whatever you do—do it outside, if possible.

“Hopefully you do not plan to climb the Eiffel Tower or tour the Colosseum on the first day of your trip,” wrote this travel blogger. “Take the kids walking around the neighborhood, to a local park or square, something relaxing and low key. They need to be out in the sun exercising, and the more time you can spend outdoors in the bright light, the easier the adjustment to the new time zone will be for everyone.”

6. Eat like a local: Afolabi-Brown suggests adjusting your child’s meal times to the new destination as soon as you arrive. If your kids are begging for food outside of these times (like when you’re struggling to sleep at 2 a.m.), you can give them a small snack, but try to hold out until they can have a proper meal at the right time.

7. Exercise: According to research published In The Journal of Physiology, exercising at certain times of the day can potentially help treat jet lag. According to the study, exercising between 1 and 4 p.m. can potentially shift your circadian rhythm to an earlier schedule, which could help get your internal clock back to its happy place. So get your kids out and play!

8. Make Your Child’s “Vacation Room” Feel Like Home: Sleeping in a bed far, far away can be scary for kids. To make things feel more familiar, bring things from home that your child already associates with sleep. If you use a certain sound machine or night light, for instance (we love this Sleep Sheep and this Tranquil Whale music and light projector), bring those with you to make home-away-from-home feel just as cozy.

9. Try melatonin: While you should always check with your pediatrician before giving your child melatonin, it can help kids adjust to a drastically different sleep schedule, Afolabi-Brown said. It also helps to get kids (and their parents) back to sleep when they wake up in the middle of the night.

Don’t use adult-dose melatonin for kids. Try brands marketed for children containing 1 mg or less of melatonin as approved by your pediatrician.

What You Can Do to Prevent Jet Lag—When You Return

It’s inevitable: Just when you and your fam are finally feeling A-OK—You have energy! The kids are doing great! Vacation life is perfect!— It’ll be time to come home.

Cue the jet lag once again! But this time, you know the drill: Spend your days in the sun; keep things dim in the evening. Hydrate. Eat meals on time. Don’t nap. Sure, it’s a process, but if you follow these steps, you’ll be back to normal in a few days.

Depending on which way you’re flying, you may find jet lag easier or harder the second time around. Flying West? You may have an easier time, according to The Sleep Foundation, it’s easier to delay your internal clock than advance it.

“Like everything that comes with parenting, each child is different. Each situation is different,” Tavia Carlson wrote on her blog, Big Brave Nomad. “The best way to overcome jet lag is to take it one day at a time. It is temporary.”

And it’s worth it! Despite the sleep snafus, foggy mornings, and cranky moments, traveling not only brings families closer, but studies show it also makes kids smarter and more empathetic humans.

Although rare, motion sickness can affect infants and toddlers

Does your baby break out into a cold sweat every time you’re in the car for more than a few minutes? Do you have a toddler who can’t get through a long drive without vomiting? Blame motion sickness. According to the Mayo Clinic, while car sickness is rare (but not impossible) for children under two, it is especially common for kids ages two to 12, with symptoms including nausea, pallor, and sweating.

“Motion sickness can occur in toddlers and infants. That does not mean there is any cause for alarm,” said American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) spokesperson Lauren Crosby, a Beverly Hills pediatrician. “It is not a cause for concern. Just not fun to feel or deal with.”

So what can you do to help prevent motion sickness for kids on your next family road trip? Here’s everything you need to know about carsickness in babies and toddlers: Why it happens, how to spot the symptoms, and what you can do to help.

Carsickness: Why It Happens

Experts aren’t sure why some people get super carsick while others don’t feel a thing. But they do agree that the sensation is caused when the brain receives mixed signals from the motion-sensing parts of the body. Basically, if your body is sitting still, but your eyes and inner ears sense movement around you, that disconnect can cause dizziness and nausea.

Kids are particularly sensitive to motion sickness in cars because they’re usually sitting so low that while their inner ears sense motion, their eyes don’t always see it (especially if they’re looking at a book or device). That disconnect creates the familiar symptoms of carsickness—mainly dizziness, fatigue, headaches, and nausea.

It can also be genetic. That means, if you’re prone to feeling yucky in cars, there’s a 50 percent chance your child will inherit the condition from you. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the condition usually crops up in the late toddler years (2 and up) and continues through childhood, peaking around age 9 or 10. Infants don’t usually suffer from motion sickness, since their brains haven’t yet figured out exactly what “normal” movement should feel like, said the AAP. But that doesn’t mean they’re immune.

“For infants, the issue is complicated by 1) the fact that you cannot ask them and 2) the fact that they often throw up, anyway, so we cannot know for sure why an infant throws up on any particular occasion,” Tom Stoffregen, a professor of kinesiology at the University of Minnesota, said in an e-mail. “My educated guess is that infants have a low risk of motion sickness because they have low ‘goals’ for bodily stability.”

Symptoms of Motion Sickness in Babies & Toddlers

Babies and young toddlers can’t tell you in words that they’re feeling dizzy or nauseous from the twists and turns of the road. But they’ll let you know in other ways. Some symptoms of motion sickness in kids to look out for include:

  • Sudden change in mood (they become grumpy or cry more than usual)
  • Frequent yawning (even after a nap)
  • Cold sweat or pale face
  • Loss of appetite
  • Restlessness
  • Increased saliva
  • Vomiting
  • Older kids may have any or all of these symptoms and may also complain of an upset stomach, headaches, or dizziness

Tips to Prevent Carsickness in Children

The best way to stop carsickness is to try to prevent it from happening in the first place. Here are some things that can help your kids from getting queasy:

1. Don’t overfeed—or underfeed—your child before a long drive
A very full—or very hungry—tummy may make carsickness worse (and your car messier, should all that food come back up). Give your baby or toddler a small meal or light snack before a long car trip. Stick with easy-to-digest foods like crackers, oatmeal, or pureed fruits and vegetables (breast milk or formula is fine, too). And while it’s tempting to swing by the fast food drive-through for some deep fried munchies—resist! High-fat or greasy foods can make nausea worse.

2. Put forward-facing kids (over 2) in the middle seat so they can see the horizon out the front windshield
Sitting in the middle seat can be helpful in alleviating carsickness since it offers a straight-shot view of the road (and horizon) ahead. This can help kids maintain some equilibrium.

Note: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends leaving children in rear-facing car seats until at least 2 years old or when they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car safety seat manufacturer.

3. Don’t let your child read or use an iPad during a car trip
Sorry—we know the devices keep those “Are we there yets” to a minimum—but reading or even looking down (as opposed to out the window or at the horizon) makes carsickness worse. Instead, engage your troubled travelers with things like audiobooks, songs, music, and encourage them to look out the window.

4. Make sure there’s good airflow in the car
Keeping the windows open or the air vents flowing in the car can help, experts say, since stuffy (potentially stinky) air may make nausea worse. Similarly, don’t bring any foods that have strong odors.

5. Plan the trip for naptime
A sleeping child is less likely to be a carsick one. Plan the trip for when your child usually naps—or at night—so that she’ll snooze the trip away before she has the chance to feel woozy.

6. Prepare for the worst
Bring wipes, paper towels, a change of clothes, Ziploc bags, and a towel to cover the car seat (and the area around it) if you anticipate carsickness.

How to Treat Carsickness in Babies and Toddlers

So what if you’ve taken all the steps to prevent your kids from getting motion sickness, and you still end up with a carsick kiddo?

Stop driving
Frequent stops may add hours to your journey, but it can help keep queasy feelings to a minimum.

Take Your Child Outside
When you stop, let your child get some fresh air. Letting her lie on her back with a cold washcloth on her forehead can help the symptoms pass more quickly, according to Stanford Health.

Offer cold water or light snacks
If your child has vomited, wait until nausea passes and then have them take sips of cold water (or breast milk if your baby is still nursing). A small, light snack can help as well.

Children over two can take over-the-counter motion sickness meds
Talk to your doctor about whether taking over-the-counter medications like Dramamine or antihistamines (which work in the same way) can help your child. Keep in mind, these meds cause drowsiness and have other possible side effects, including dry mouth and blurred vision, so weigh the benefits and risks carefully.

Please Note: Don’t give any medications to your child (even over-the-counter meds) without asking you doctor first.

Be wary of alternative treatments
Crosby warned against using “alternative” seasickness treatments such as ginger chews, essential oils, and acupressure bands, for infants and toddlers, since most of those are meant for adults or older children. Seasick bands, in particular, can be a choking hazard to children under 3.

How to Know When It’s More Than Motion Sickness

Carsickness usually gets better when the motion ceases, so if your child continues to feel sick even a half hour after getting out of the car, it could be a stomach bug or something she ate. On the contrary—if your child vomits or cries incessantly every time you set out on a road trip (or even a long ride to daycare), the motion may be to blame.

“The key in telling the difference between motion sickness and something else has to do with monitoring symptoms over time, so if every time a child rides in the car they throw up or get unusually fussy, restless, pale, sweaty, then likely that is motion sickness,” Crosby said. “If the vomiting happens once but never again, then it likely was something else, like the start of a stomach virus.”

Good to Know: If your child feels “carsick,” even when not in motion—especially if this feeling is accompanied by a headache, difficulty hearing, seeing, walking, or talking—contact your doctor, as these can be symptoms of something more serious.

The Good News

According to experts, carsickness usually declines with age, with children ages 6 to 12 years old being the most susceptible. “Motion sickness varies across the lifespan,” said Stoffregen, who has studied motion sickness in people of all ages for almost 35 years. “Things that made us sick when we were kids may no longer make us sick as adults, and vice versa.”

And, for you parents who have suffered with the ailment all your lives, hang in there. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the condition usually gets better after about age 50.

Successfully returning to work after maternity leave takes more than a little planning

One day you’re planning and anticipating your baby’s arrival and the next—bam!—you’re a parent. Arguably, one of life’s biggest adjustments is learning how to exist in the world after expanding your family. It’s totally natural to feel incredibly excited and incredibly overwhelmed all at once. You are now responsible for a little human, and it’s a huge transition.

Then just when you feel like you’ve found some sort of rhythm to your days (and nights), your maternity leave is almost done. Now it’s time to get ready for another big change—learning how to balance parenthood with work. Although the thought of leaving your cuddly bundle and interacting with adults might seem daunting, these tips can help make the transition back into the workforce less stressful.

1. Aim for a Short First Week

For an easier transition, consider starting back on a Wednesday or Thursday. This will allow you to ease back into things as you adjust to pumping, childcare schedules, and all the other things you’ll have to consider when returning to work after maternity leave. Plus starting mid-week allows you to monitor your own energy and stress levels. Regroup with your partner over the weekend to discuss what worked and what didn’t then pivot accordingly. Finding your flow will take some time.

2. Establish a Routine

Planning out a routine that can set both you and your partner up for a successful day is a win-win for everyone. Before returning to work, sit down and come up with a detailed checklist. Who will do childcare drop-off and on what days? Do you need to prepare breastmilk or formula in the morning? What about pumping? Is the to-go diaper bag ready? Sure, things will come up (trust us, they will), but having an outline you can both reference is a good starting point when things start to feel overwhelming. If you don’t have a parenting partner, run through the routine with a friend or family member to double check your plan.

3. Run Through Your Day

Before starting back up, do a few practice runs. Commuting? Map your route from home to childcare to your place of work. Note how much longer it may take and plan to leave earlier depending on what you discover. It’s also a good idea to run through your entire morning–take a shower, get yourself ready, and get the baby ready to see how long it might realistically take.

If your child is starting childcare–whether it’s daycare or with a nanny–consider starting them a week or two before you return to work after maternity leave. This will allow both of you to adjust as you get comfortable with them spending time with new people and a new routine as well.  Remember, multiple transitions at once can overwhelm parents and baby.

4. Make a Meal Plan for You and Baby

Before returning to the workforce, it’s important to come up with a meal plan not only for the baby but for you, too. Are you breastfeeding? Pumping not only takes a lot of time, but can zap your energy. Make sure you schedule sessions around meetings and other commitments. Many offices have designated maternity rooms so familiarize yourself with yours when you first return. Opting for formula or a hybrid of formula and breast milk? Make sure your baby’s bottles and food are prepped and ready for their caregiver. When all is said and done, don’t forget to nourish yourself. Your body is working overtime right now as it regulates. Eat a well-balanced meal and take snack breaks for yourself.

5. Find a Childcare Option That Works for You

One of the hardest parts of going back to work is leaving your baby for the first time. You’ve been bonding and getting to know each other 24/7; letting go can be tough. It’s crucial for your peace of mind to find a childcare plan that works for your family. That might look like daycare, a nanny or nanny share, or staying with a relative. It’s never too early to start touring locations to see what feels comfortable for you and your child. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

6. Communicate with Your Co-workers

It feels like you’re been making 1,000 adjustments in your life, but for many of your coworkers it’s business as usual. While they may understand you just had a baby, they might not realize maternity leave isn’t a vacation. Keep lines of communication open with your boss and coworkers. Things happen–daycares close unexpectedly, kids get sick, doctor appointments need to be made—and talking to your manager about expectations and flexibility before you get back into things can also help make the transition all that much easier.

7. Set Boundaries

You might feel like you have to take as much on as you did pre-baby, but it’s okay to not take on too much too soon. Set boundaries for yourself. It can be a challenge to say “no,” but sometimes it’s the healthiest word you can use. Whether it’s a hard laptop cutoff time or not checking emails off-hours, it’s important to stick with what works for you and your family.

8. Be Kind to Yourself

Sure, it’s a very exciting time, but it’s also a very exhausting one. Your sleep patterns are off, your mom brain fog is real, your emotions are up and down, and you want to get as much cuddle time with your little one as possible. With that being said–remember, it’s hard work and it’s totally okay and totally normal to feel overwhelmed, anxious, and unsure about what you’re doing. That’s parenthood! Allow yourself to feel those feelings, acknowledge them, take a deep breath, and move forward. Every day, every hour, every minute is different, and you’re doing the best you can in the moment. You got this!

The days you’ve spent dreaming of taking a family vacation are here—and the time to do it is now. While you may have put off a getaway with your entire clan, there’s no better moment than the present to enjoy one-on-one time with those who matter most.

Traveling with children of any age can be challenging, but there are tricks to get the job done and keep everyone happy throughout the journey. To help rid yourself of worry and lessen the number of hiccups along the way, we’ve compiled Marriott Bonvoy’s go-to tricks that’ll help moms and dads go on any trip with ease.

1. Find a destination that will keep the entire family happy

What constitutes a vacation means something different for everyone. Some prefer to sit back and relax on the beach, while others thrive off outdoorsy adventures that challenge them. Once you add children to the mix, these preferences change even more.

To help you decide which destination is right for your family, ask yourself what your goal is on this getaway. Are you looking to wind down? South Florida may be calling your name. Do you want to explore historical monuments and cultural experiences with your kiddos? A trip to Washington D.C. may be on your horizon. Perhaps you’re looking to tackle a new activity, like hiking in a state park, where Minneapolis may be the name of your game.

2. Don’t wait until the last minute to book your trip

Once you’ve made up your mind of where your family will be vacationing, it’s time to start coordinating your flight, especially if you plan to travel out of the state and want to avoid a road trip at all costs. Travel booking app Hopper recommends booking domestic flights one two months in advance and to avoid waiting until three to four weeks before your departure, as airfares typically spike by then. For holiday travel, a good rule of thumb is to snag your seat three to four months out.

As for lodging, most hotels, such as Marriott Bonvoy, allow almost a years’ worth of lead time to reserve a room. Fortunately, you don’t need that much time, at least according to Hopper. The sweet spot for guaranteeing your space is three to four months ahead of your trip.

4. Pack items that’ll keep kids entertained

Whether you’re taking a two-hour flight or have a five-hour road trip mapped out, always have toys, interactive books or a tablet on hand. It’ll keep your children in good spirits and hopefully cut down on the number of times they’ll ask, “Are we there yet?”

To not disturb your peace (and those around you), bring kid-friendly headphones so you can limit the number of times you hear Baby Shark in one sitting.

5. Snacks, snacks, and more snacks

A hangry kiddo is a kiddo to not handle lightly, as they’ll change the tune of your getaway within seconds. Pack a travel bag that’s loaded with low-sugar snacks to keep your little ones’ hunger at bay. We’re talking cheese crackers, granola bars, trail mix, hard pretzel bites, animal crackers, dry cereal, popcorn, fruits, you name it.

Not only are these treats easy to open and (sort of, almost) mess-free, but they’re also convenient when anyone in your group is in need of a pick-me-up.

6. Surprise your little ones with a special gift

For children, nothing beats surprises they can unwrap. Buy them an inexpensive goodie that will keep their attention for hours at hand and keep the feel-good emotions going.

Our favorite travel companion that’s certain to wow your kiddos is an LCD writing tablet. Imaginative minds can sketch as many drawings as they’d like, then once they’re ready to create a new masterpiece, they can erase it and start fresh. Thanks to the tablet’s attached stylus, you can also avoid the need for crayons that’ll end up dropped or lost in no time.

7. Remember to pack light but keep essentials on hand

We know it’s easier said than done, but packing what’s absolutely needed will make for less stress in the end. Also, over-packed suitcases are heavy and inconvenient to lug around, along with your children. Just think about the last time you took a trip and how much of the clothes and shoes you packed you actually used.

Since accidents are almost inevitable with little ones, like spilled juice and a scratched knee, have a list of essentials with you at all times. We advise keeping some items handy, such as a first aid kit, disinfectant wipes, a plastic bag for trash, reusable water bottle, pull-ups and basic, over-the-counter medication for motion sickness, headaches and upset stomachs.

8. Plan travel and events around naps

If you have infants or toddlers, you know all too well the importance of nap time. When traveling, think of it as your secret weapon for a smooth and seamless commute. With an afternoon flight, it’s likely your tots will have started to wind down from all the excitement and are going to want to get some shut-eye.

On the other hand with a road trip, leaving very early in the morning or late at night can help keep them resting peacefully since you’re sticking to their typical, at-home sleep schedule. Similarly, with any activities and events, make sure you book them before or after their nap, so they remain in a good mood and are ready to take on the next adventure.

9. Carve out extra travel time for the unpredictable

Sometimes life just happens and you can’t predict when a random rush hour will hit or when there are flight delays. It’s best to leave yourself wiggle room no matter if you’re commuting on land or in the air.

Allow ample time to get through the airport security, which can feel chaotic with kids in tow, might we add. If you’re bringing breast milk or baby food for the trip, keep in mind that security will stop to test them before you can make your way to your flight gate. On the flip side, map out rest stops along the way when driving long distances. It’s important to give everyone time for restroom breaks and to stretch out their legs.

10. Always create a plan B for your itinerary

While it would be wonderful if we could control Mother Nature every now and then, it’s a possibility that the weather can damper your plans. Have a backup list of indoor activities for rainy days, so you can keep the day moving without any hiccups.

Look to museums, adventure parks, amusement centers and arcades that the whole family will enjoy. Don’t skip over themed restaurants that are kid-friendly and feature fun characters or options that offer both a dinner and a show.
