Halloween is just around the corner and so is the return of the Midnight Gang. Nickelodeon just shared the first trailer for the reboot of Are You Afraid of the Dark?

If you grew up in the ’90s chances are you slept with a nightlight on after watching the original spooky series Are You Afraid of the Dark? and now it’s your kids turn for some scary good fun.

The new version is a three-part, limited series introducing a brand new campfire story for the Midnight Gang, The Carnival of Doom, which as the premise of the series goes, comes to life. This reboot is definitely not for younger viewers and appears to have a little less cheesiness and lot more edge than the original.

Part one of Are You Afraid of the Dark? premieres Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. EST on Nickelodeon. Parts two and three air on Oct. 18 and Oct. 25.

The LA County Fair offers way more than carnival rides and fried food on a stick—though there’s plenty of that too. As one of the largest county fairs in North America, it’s chockfull of family fun. From mini horses to giant train cars, read on for our guide to everything to see and do with kids at this year’s extravaganza.

Tickets! Get Your Tickets!

Dates & Times: The fair kicks off on Fri., August 30 (noon to midnight) and goes through September 22. After Labor Day weekend, it's open Wed.-Sun. On weekdays, gates open at noon; while on weekends, they open at 10a.m.

Cost: Admission to the fair on weekdays (Wed.-Fri.) costs $14 for adults (ages 13 and up) and $8 for kids ages 6-12. Kids 5 and under are free—woohoo! On weekends and holidays (ahem, Labor Day Monday), ticket prices jump to $20 for adults and $12 for kids ages 6-12. Be prepared to pay for parking—general parking is $15, VIP is $25, and valet is $30.

Let's Eat!

Laura Green

Of course, there's plenty of cotton candy, corn dogs, deed-fried everything (even watermelon) and even buffalo chicken and mac 'n' cheese in a waffle cone (yep, that's a thing). But you can also find fare that's, well, less fair-y. Past options have included vegan tacos, fruit smoothies and fresh grilled veggie flatbreads right from the farm. If none of those sounds good to your little ones, there's always the Rainbow Pop Grilled Cheese, which you can find at The Dog House for $6.50.

Insider Tip: Find more meal option that are part of the $6.50 value menu.

All aboard! Locomotive-loving kids will love a stop at this museum on the Fairplex grounds. Step inside some of the largest steam engines and diesel locomotives in the world, plus explore authentic sleeping and dining cars, and a historical train depot built in 1885. Added bonus: Kids can even blow the whistle in a giant engine!

Garden Railroad

Eric R. via Yelp

After checking out RailGiants, chugga-chugga on over to this miniature railroad that's been a Fair exhibit since 1924. With more than 10,000 feet of operating track, it's one of the largest public garden railroads in the U.S. Choo-choo!

Farm Fun

A county fair isn't a county fair without plenty of livestock to visit and pet. At the Big Red Barn, you'll find the Rawhide Dude Ranch where kids can learn to lasso a cow, ride on rocking horses and visit the resident horse Copper and her friends.

There also the Little Red Barn, home to all sorts of miniature critters like pint-sized horses, pigs, cows and more! Get a moo-ve on!

Kiddie Carnival

If your kids are adamant about trying out a few rides, make your way to the Kiddie Carnival (Behind the Garden Railraod) with rides specifically for the under 4-foot set. From mini bumper cars to a carousel, there's a little something for everyone.

11 Amazing LA Experiences That Are Totally Free

Have a teen who’s too cool for family vacations? Take them on a cruise. Not only do cruise vacations give teenagers the freedom they crave, but more and more cruise ships are also offering unique perks for teens, from teen-only nightclubs to Broadway-caliber shows. These are some of the best cruise ships for teens.

1. Disney Dream

You’re never too old for Disney, and the luxurious amenities and services offered by Disney Cruise Line are seriously over the top. Among the highlights for teens are Vibe, a hip hangout with a sun deck with splash pools, water misters and classic games; an indoor dance floor; stage area for karaoke and talent shows; wall pods for gaming and watching movies; and a lounge with snacks and mocktails. Teens also love the AquaDuck, a water coaster that twists and turns its way around the ship—even going out over the water! You’ll also find the AquaDuck on Disney Fantasy, and all Disney ships offer a teens-only hangout.

2. Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas

Teens can get happily get lost on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas—it’s the largest cruise ship in the world! They’ll discover laser tag, ziplining, ice skating, mini-golf, a carousel and the electrifying Ultimate Abyss waterslide, along with performances of Hairspray and mesmerizing shows at the AquaTheater. The ship’s teen programming is divided into two age groups—12 to 14 and 15 to 17—allowing teens to watch movies, play games, sing karaoke and more with other kids their age.

3. Carnival Vista

One word: Skyride. The suspended bicycle takes riders around the Carnival Vista, 150 above the sea, in a breathtaking experience your teens won’t soon forget! Other thrills for teens include a ropes course, 3D movie experience at the Thrill Theater, and a sports complex with everything from outdoor billiards to mini-bowling. The Carnival Vista also offers two teens-only hangouts: Club 02 for 15- to 17-year olds, and for ages 12 to 14, Circle C.

4. Norwegian Getaway

Talk about an adrenaline rush. On Norwegian Getaway, teens can walk The Plank, a narrow plank that goes out over the sea. (All participants are properly harnessed, so you can take a breath now.) If that’s not enough, there’s also the heart-racing Free Fall waterslide. Other ship activities for teens include rock climbing, the Rock of Ages show and the Entourage Teen Zone for ages 13 to 17.

5. Royal Princess

It’s all about Remix, a teen club for ages 13 to 17 on Royal Princess. This one features a DJ booth where teens can create their own playlist, an indoor lounge with video games and an outdoor area with a wading pool. Regularly scheduled activities include teens-only mocktail parties, sports competitions, dance classes and late-night movies. Another reason we love Princess Cruise Line for teens: the Ocean Medallion, which allows parents to easily keep track of and communicate with their teens, no matter where they are on the ship.

Gorgeous calm waters, predictable rain-free weather, constant refreshing breeze, and welcoming locals. . . it’s no wonder travelers tend to put Aruba on repeat once they visit this One Happy Island. Aruba Marriott Resort invites you to immerse yourself in all the island has to offer, and even rewards guests who are up for the challenge of unplugging. Take the plunge and hear how a trip to Aruba will make for One Happy Family.

The Basics

As great as family time can be, plenty of personal space is an absolute necessity. Aruba Marriott Resort has the largest rooms on the island, at 500-square-feet, with an additional 100-square-foot balcony that overlooks the mesmerizing blues of the Caribbean Sea.

The Digital Detox

Think you’re up for the challenge of a digital detox? Aruba Marriott Resort is sweetening the pie by rewarding guests who are willing to ditch their phones for the majority of their stay. Pony up your phone, which will be stored in a safe, and the resort will give you a disposable camera to capture memories old-school style, plus bonus Marriott Bonvoy points to redeem for a future stay.

On-Property Entertainment

Enhance your cultural travel experience by opting to visit Aruba during their month-long Carnival season and you’ll quickly see why they call themselves One Happy Island. You’ll experience a colorful celebration full of exciting dances, cheerful music and over-the-top costumery that celebrates the bright spirits of the local culture. If you can’t make it to the official Carnival, Aruba Marriot Resort has you covered with a mini Carnival at their beachside La Vista restaurant every Thursday night.

All the kids really care about is the size of the pool and whether or not there’s sand to bury a sibling, or maybe you. To answer both, the pool does not disappoint with a cascading waterfall, hot tub and swim-up bar with kiddie cocktails on command and the sand is prime for castle-making and moat-digging. As a parent, you’ll appreciate the calmness of the water that makes for a low-key ocean experience.

At a kiosk next to the resort, you can rent floats, paddleboards, kayaks and (we highly recommend for big laughs) schedule a 4- or 8-person tubing ride. You get to dictate the speed and excitement level to the driver via hand gestures and if you give your kids that control, just hang on for dear life!

Off-Property Play

At one time donkeys were an important mode of transportation on the island. But, as cars replaced donkey-powered transport, some 1,400 of these four-legged friends were left to roam aimlessly where they were often hit by the cars, fell prey to disease or were turned into lion food for visiting circuses. Donkey Sanctuary Aruba was created as a safe haven where each donkey was given a name, nourishment, a cozy place to take a snooze and an abundance of all-important love. Now, travelers can have playdates with the donkeys and, for a small fee, try a hand at feeding the sweeties.

photo: De Palms Snorkel Adventure via Maria Chambers

For a truly unforgettable experience, take the kids to swim with the fishes on a De Palms Snorkel Adventure tour via a 70-foot-long catamaran. You’ll explore three fish-filled snorkeling spots, including swimming above one of the largest sunken cargo ships in the world, the German’s SS Antilla. Your per-person fee includes lunch, drinks (including alcoholic beverages for adults), and snorkel gear. Pro tip: If your kid has their own snorkel gear, bring it. With so many people in the water all using the same gear, it’s helpful when your kid’s snorkel looks different to help track them in the water.

Where to Dine

All this play will leave tummies grumbling, for sure. If you’re looking for on-property convenience, you’ll find a Ruth’s Chris Steak House with 5-star steak and seafood options, the beachside Atardi which specializes in seafood and stellar ocean and sunset views, La Vista makes friends with the pickiest of eaters with a wide array of buffet options all day, The Lobby is your answer for the inevitable island sushi crave, and Waves Beach Bar and Grill comes through with the casual pool-side lite bites and cocktails.

Oh, and for your morning fuel, mosey on down to the Starbucks for a caffeine fix or Gelato and Co. for an acai bowl or smoothie (and then cruise back by for a late-night gelato feast).

With so many options at the resort, you don’t technically need to ever leave. But, if you want to swap one beautiful scene for another, make a date with The West Deck. It’s set outdoors on a large wooden deck overlooking a white sandy beach, where fidgety kids can play bags and architect sand castles or be entertained watching planes and departing cruise ships with live music floating in the background.

photo: Linda’s Dutch Pancakes via Maria Chambers

Some would say it’s rude to not at least try Dutch cuisine while on a Dutch island, and it may as well be a pancake. Savory or sweet, let your taste buds guide you at Linda’s Dutch Pancakes, where you can plant your face in a 20-inch Dutch pancake. If you’re unfamiliar, Dutch pancakes are thinner than a pancake, and ingredients requiring cooking are cooked into the pancake.  Choose from preset combinations, like Strawberries & Whipped Cream or Brie, Walnuts & Honey, or imagine your own creation.

When to Go

The island has an average rainfall of under 20 inches a year and sits completely outside the hurricane belt. These truths, coupled with the fact the average daytime temp is a temperate 82 degrees, makes it an ideal tropical destination year-round.

Airport Information

Book your flight into the Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA), which is about a 20-minute drive to the hotel. Give yourself a bit of extra time when you depart because you will go through both Aruba security and U.S. Customs, which saves you time when you land into the U.S.

Good to Know

  • We’ll answer the #1 question every American asks when leaving the country. Yes, you can drink the water. It’s actually one of the safest waters to drink on any island.
  • US dollars and Aruba’s local currency (florin) are accepted across the islands.
  • The local language is called Papiamento, but English is widely used.
  • There’s a fully-stocked shop near the lobby where you can purchase essentials like sunscreen, and the selection is good, so no worries about packing your own.
  • There is a nice 24-hour workout facility with free weights and machines, for those that like to keep up their exercise routine on the road.
  • Fun fact: Aloe is Aruba’s largest export, so give an aloe-infused cocktail a whirl in The Lobby Bar.

What better way to celebrate a summer in the Upside Down than with a spooky carnival? A California landmark is transforming into Hawkins, Indiana for a Stranger Things pop-up fans won’t want to miss.

The Santa Monica Pier is getting a very ’80s makeover as Stranger Things takes over Pacific Parks’ attractions with a spooky carnival pop-up. The new season of Stranger Things, which is set to premiere on Jul. 4, takes place in the summer of 1985 and will feature all things ’80s from the mall to the hair scrunchies, and of course plenty of monsters.

The Stranger Things-themed takeover will celebrate the third seasons summer vibes with carnival games, like a slime-filled dunk tank, attractions, like a Demogorgon-filled Curiosity House, and plenty of eats, like the Scoops Ahoy ice cream parlor where your favorite Hawkins residents will be slinging scoops for their summer jobs.

There will also be live entertainment, like performances by the Hawkins High cheerleaders and the entire Pacific Park amusement park will get a Hawkins makeover.

The Stranger Things pop-up carnival will take place Jun. 29 and 30 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Santa Monica Pier. Admission is free.

Even though it wasn’t her birthday, Serena Williams’ daughter Olympia was recently the guest of honor at a party just for her—and we’re totally in awe of this adorable backyard bash.

Williams and her family are Jehovah’s Witnesses, and as such, don’t celebrate birthdays, which is why there were no social media ‘grams when Olympia turned a year old last September. Proving that spontaneity can be so much more fun than waiting for a special occasion, this just-because bash was a fab, fun family time.

Posting an Instagram Video of the cute carnival-themed event, Williams dished, “I wanted to just do something fun because we don’t do birthdays.” By the looks of the party from the tennis star’s Instagram Story, fun is an understatement for this epic backyard soiree.

Along with a working carousel, Olympia’s party also included face painting, train rides, lots of Disney songs and a station named “Olympia’s Candy Shop.” IG posts from dad Alexis Ohanian show the 17-month-old pointing to a duck with a full-on petting zoo in the backyard. Now that’s how throw a party on the fly that any tot would absolutely adore!
