Looking for some inspiration and an upbeat album that is sure to get stuck in your head – in a good way? Portland musician, Aaron Nigel Smith, just released the digital version of his 1World Chorus Bob Marley tribute album, Celebrating Bob Marley, in honor of what would have been Bob Marley’s 70th birthday. Smith’s 1World Chorus brings music education to underprivileged children throughout the world. Read on to see what we found out when we chatted with him recently.

The Musicians
Kids and parents may be familiar with Smith’s work on the PBS kids show, “Between the Lions,” but Smith is also the creator of Smith’s 1World Chorus is made up of kids, ages 7-18, from his music program from the U.S., Kenya, Columbia and Jamiaca. The 10-track album, with the help of Ziggy Marley’s Tuff Gong recorded over the course of 18 months in studios all over the world, features the kids’ vocals and instrumentation under Smith’s direction.

“I’ve been a Marley fan more than half of my life and I’ve been a singer my whole life,” says Smith. “This is a culmination of those things, along with the children’s music program. I formed 1World Chorus back in 2006. Our mission is to connect kids through music projects. We’ve done choral outreach projects and drumming projects with kids in Kenya, Jamaica and the U.S. It’s been, not necessarily reggae, but it’s been sort of a world music vibe, up until now, where we do folk music, classical music and pop music and all types of stuff from around the world.”

For this album, Smith worked with kids locally from School of Rock, then extended it to their Seattle and L.A. locations. He then opened the recordings up to Portland area schools, King Elementary School, the Oregon Trail Academy in Boring and the SW Charter School, as well as singers from New York, Kenya and Jamaica.

The Album
The tracks include the kids singing and playing all of the instruments on the album, featuring some of Bob Marley’s most beloved songs:

1. Jamming
2. Three Little Birds
3. No Woman No Cry
4. Smile Jamaica
5. Bend Down Low (featuring Bob Marley’s 10 year-old granddaughter, Judah Marley)
6. Wake Up and Live
7. One Love
8. Lively Up Yourself
9. Is This Love
10. Redemption Song

The Support
Smith says that they use the CDs as a fundraising tool so they can continue to bring the programs to the kids in impoverished communities, including orphanages in Kenya, schools in the slums of Kingston and in St. Anne, where Bob Marley went to school.

“We are in these communities bringing them free music programs, but on top of that, through the CDs and recordings, I’m able to engage more sponsors by sharing the music with people like Remo Drums and Martin Guitars, who have also donated drums to the program so we can give them to the kids who participated as well as guitars. That continues to grow, the more exposure we get and we’re able to bring, not only funds, but musical instruments and programs to these kids in rural areas.”

Guitar Center and Keen Shoes have also been backing the program in a huge way since the beginning, giving instruments, shoes and socks and paying for travel expenses.

The Show
On May 22nd, at 5:30 p.m. fans will be able to see Smith and some of the kids of 1World Chorus perform at King Elementary School, 4906 NE 6th Ave. Some of Smith’s Portland 1World Chorus crew will be singing a variety of folk songs from around the world, as well as a couple of the Marley songs from the new album.

“RACC and & Oregon Arts Commission funded a proposal that I submitted last year to bring school children from diverse backgrounds together to collaborate on a performance,” says Smith. “During my Right Brain Residency prior to the current workshops, we recorded the music for the Bob CD. Many of these students were featured on the recording. To be clear, the focus of my current residency is folk music from around the world, not exclusively Marley. The kids will sing a variety of folk songs from around the world and culminating performance will end with a couple of the Marley songs from the new recording.”
The Details

The Celebrating Bob Marley  CD will be available at the show and is available digitally right now via iTunes, Amazon and Tuff Gong Worldwide. For more information, check out oneworldchorus.org.

Imagine: Instead of the electronic beeps and blasts of the latest video game, what if your kiddo was filling your home with the sweets sounds of the piano? Clarinet? What if they were singing? The new Little Mission Studio can’t promise video game abstinence, but they can teach your little one how to carry a tune, master the scales and get comfortable with an instrument, from guitar to clarinet to bucket drums (ok, that one might make you beg for them to bring a little screen time back).

The Venue
This spacious music haven in the sunny Mission District offers more than just a place to take one-on-one lessons. There are private practice rooms enrolled students can use free of charge, larger rehearsal spaces so they can jam out with friends, and a performance space that is perfectly suited to the seasonal recitals that students are invited to participate in. The set up is inspired by the ways that the pros work, and students are encouraged to collaborate with their fellow musicians and let their inner artists shine.

Music Makers
Little Mission Studio is headed by three passionate professionals. Claire Plumb is a singer, composer and vocal coach; Matt Rupert is a master of piano and clarinet, and loves introducing kids to the joy of music—he’s taught extensively at schools from Baltimore to San Francisco; Christian Howes is the guy who is going to teach your kid how to bang on things, as he is a professional percussionist who’s kept the beat with award-winning marching bands. All three also teach adult classes at Little Mission Studio, in case you want to make it a family affair (or dream of starting a band a la The Partridge Family).

Broadway-Bound Babes
Your little crooners can now spend their Sundays in the Little Mission Kids’ Chorus or work on their harmonies in A Cappella class. If it’s the bright lights they crave, maybe Broadway Bound is the class for them, or guitar for the beginner. All classes are series classes, and private lessons are booked in monthly packs. There are no drop-ins or single classes offered, so make sure you and your little maestro are ready to commit. Group class series are a great way to gauge interest and see where the music takes them!

Take a popular fairy tale (one involving a very tempting gingerbread house). Adapt it for the stage, giving every character a fun new twist (like a witch that sings show tunes). Add new music created by one of the nation’s most influential kindie rock artists (Justin Roberts … perhaps you’ve heard of him?). Put this all together and what do you get? Hansel & Gretel: A Wickedly Delicious Musical Treat, a world premiere by Emerald City Theatre and Broadway in Chicago. It runs through January 4, 2015, and will be this winter’s big hit.

The Not-Too-Scary Story
You know the plot: Siblings Hansel and Gretel lose their mother and classmates and go in search of them deep within The Forbidden Forest. When they come across a candy house (and the witch who lives there), their bond and beliefs are put to the test until love saves the day. The show is for ages 4-12. With the younger set in mind, Emerald City Theatre has toned down the scary details — aka: there’s no shoving witches into fiery-hot ovens — and beefed up the fun. Imagine a wise-cracking witch that is played by a man. And a duck that quacks out witty one-liners for comedic relief. That’s not to mention irresistible Justin Roberts songs that will make you wiggle and jiggle in your seat.

The Music
This is the first-ever musical scoring by the Chicago-based Grammy nominee, who worked with nationally produced playwright Ernie Nolan to bring it all to life. Justin usually writes power-pop kids’ songs, as well as soothing lullabies. But for Hansel and Gretel, he tried a few new styles. “There are American songbook-type songs … which was fun because I am a huge Frank Sinatra fan and love the early musicals written by Cole Porter and George Gershwin,” says Roberts.

The actors are also the musicians, plus there’s a band on stage (named The Grimm Brothers Band, naturally). As the story unfolds, characters play various instruments, including piano, bass, drums, electric and acoustic guitar, cello, violin, glockenspiel, ukelele and mandolin. The adventure bounces between everything from big Broadway-style numbers to ’70s soft rock. And, true to Roberts’ form, they’re all songs you won’t easily shake from your head.

Moments You’ll Love
Your kiddo’s eyes will light up from the very beginning, as the musical opens with a song called “This Place.” Villages are talking about how their town has changed since the king disappeared, and their chorus is a strong, melodic reminiscing about the former beauty of the town. There’s also no forgetting everybody’s favorite scene in which Hansel and Gretel drop breadcrumbs to find their way home as they meander through the Forbidden Forest. Of course, there’s a song to match it; “Crumb by Crumb” is a climactic number that’s happier than you’d expect.

To reveal the ending or tell more would give away too much about this musical’s magic. Best you see it for yourself — before all the seats get gobbled up!

If visions of Red Ryder BB guns, Bumpass hounds, and leg lamps glowing in the window dance through your Christmas dreams, then we’ve got the inside scoop on a ticket your whole fam will love. A Christmas Story, The Musical is back in town and it’s a pitch perfect translation of the much-loved movie into a musical romp. Complete with pink bunny PJs, Higbee’s Santa and even (gasp!) Scut Farkus, this A+++ (you get the idea) production is holiday must-see.

Home for the Holidays
A Christmas Story, The Musical’s Emerald City connection makes it all the merrier during the holidays. It was developed by the 5th Avenue Theatre’s creative team back in 2010, and has since made its way onto theaters across the country, even spending some time on Broadway (and garnering three Tony award nominations in the process!) in 2012 and 2013. Lucky for us, this musical spectacular has made its way back home for the holidays, so new fans can experience this spirited production!

The talented cast can also claim the hometown advantage. Local actors (and real-life husband and wife) Dane Stokinger and Jessica Skerritt play the Old Man and Mom, while Mark Jeffrey James Webber (a local 8th grader) portrays Ralphie like a pro, and Brandon Oke (a fourth grader from Everett) takes on the role of his little brother Randy. Yet another reason to heart Seattle.

Same Story, Different Tune
This musical version of Ralphie’s saga doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to the humor, classic lines and scenes of the original 1983 movie. From eating like a little piggy to that “Oh, f-u-d-g-e!” moment, it’s all in there. Even the Bumpass hounds make an appearance (or three) chasing the Old Man across stage. But the catchy tunes and group dance numbers often take center stage in this production, with good reason. They’re so much fun! Plus, they fit seamlessly into the well-known story, which makes it easy for kiddos familiar with the movie to follow along. Bravo!

Big Love for the Littles
One part of the production with absolute kid-appeal is the many child actors (with roles big and small) weaved throughout the musical. Because what’s more fun for kids than watching other kids having an absolute blast! And that’s exactly what they’ll see in this larger-than-life show. It’s no surprise that Ralphie, with his fantastic daydreams and well-intentioned schemes, takes center stage. But the creative minds behind this musical thoughtfully cast a chorus of kids to back him up as well. They pop up here and there, infusing silly antics and general kid humor into the production. And each big musical number features these tiny dancers (and singers and actors), so they’re more than just a footnote. What a talented bunch!

Good to Know
1. Little theatergoers can get a boost so they won’t miss any of the show. Just grab a cushion on your way into the theater to catch all of the magic on stage.

2. Be sure to check out the Christmas Story selfie stations set up around the theatre during intermission. Snap a pic, then post it so everyone can revel in your bunny PJ glory!

3. This is a full-length show that caps out at around two hours and thirty minutes (including intermission). Weekend matinees are a great choice for the younger set, if they need to be in bed early. Or call a holiday audible and let them stay up past bedtime for an evening show.

4. Kids 4 and under (including babes in arms) won’t be admitted. Babysitter for little sibs? Or even a date night possibility? Works for us!
