The World’s Largest Halloween Party at the Louisville Zoo, Louisville, Ky

Louisville Zoo

The Louisville Zoo isn't an amusement park (though they do have a carouse!l), but we thought it deserved a mention because it hosts "the world's largest Halloween party" in an effort to give younger kids something "cheery not eery" for the season. The party—now in its 37th year—features costumed meet-and-greet characters in larger-than-life storybook scenes. Themed areas include a zany tea party, a Superhero City, and a fairy-filled "Pirate's Cove." The event also features a hay maze, a sweeping hillside pumpkin display, and a trick-or-treating trail for kids 11 & under.

Tickets: An extra $9 ($10 night of) per person.

Dates: Thurs.-Sun. Oct. 4-28

Halloween Havoc at Nickelodeon Universe – Bloomington, Mn

Nickelodeon Universe

Minnesotans know how to do trick-or-treating right: They do it inside, where the temperatures are always a constant degree of pleasant. And at Nickelodeon Universe, a seven-acre theme park located inside the sprawling Mall of America, Halloween is celebrated every night during the month of October. The Universe of Light: Fright Lights Halloween Spectacular is an experience that will take visitors on a spooky journey through music and lights. Come together for this nightly light show in celebration of the spookiest most fun holiday–Halloween!

Hint: Go on a Saturdays, the hugely popular Double Dare challenge lets kids see other kids get slimed live on stage (or join in on the fun and try to be a part of the show!).

Dates: Oct. 1-31

Happy Hauntings at Dutch Wonderland – Lancaster, Pa

Dutch Wonderland

Families with younger children will love this Lancaster, Pennsylvania theme park, which calls itself "a kingdom for kids" and boasts 34 rides, almost all of which are perfectly safe for kids under six. Its annual "Happy Hauntings" event will keep kids entertained without relying on any of the spooky stuff. Along with re-decorating rides with a more seasonal flare (a swing ride becomes a "bat swing, for instance; the monorail becomes the "Ghost Flight"), the celebration also includes costume contests, special shows, and a Trick-or-Treat Trail that'll load your costumed kid up with gobs of yummy loot.

Dates: Weekends, Oct. 13-28.

Mickey’s Halloween Party at Disneyland – Anaheim, CA

Paul Hiffmeyer/Disneyland

Disney leaves no ghoulish stone unturned for its sweeping Halloween celebration, a whimsically-spooky (but not too spooky!) event that puts seasonal touches all over Disneyland Park. Kids will go wild over the shindig, which features generously-stocked trick-or-treat stations, Halloween parades, costumed villains roaming the park and a massive Halloween fireworks show that'll rival your hometown's Fourth of July. Nearly all of the rides are open—and, insiders say, maybe not as crowded, since Disney only issues a limited number of Halloween Party tickets.

Want to hit the rides before the party starts? Halloween party ticket-holders can enter the park up to three hours before the start of the shindig—get there at 4 p.m. to get your fill of Disney before your kids zero in on the candy-hunt. Your ticket gets you into Disney's adjacent California Adventure park without any extra park-hopper fee—and while California Adventure doesn't have a "party" (i.e. no trick-or-treating), there are magical Halloween touches all over the place, including rides transformed into Halloween attractions (Mater's Junkyard Jamboree becomes "Mater's Graveyard Jamboree" and Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters into "Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween).

The Great Pumpkin Fest at Cedar Point – Sandusky, OH

Cedarpoint

Cedar Point may be the roller coaster capital of the world, but it knows how to treat the littles to a scare-free Halloween. Its Great Pumpkin Fest, offered every weekend from mid-Sept. until the end of Oct., gives costumed kiddos a whole lot of Halloween fun without any of the creepy stuff (that's reserved for its nighttime scare-fest, Haunt, which starts in the evenings and looks totally terrifying). Its calmer and the friendlier daytime events include a Peanuts-themed "Great Pumpkin Parade," Peppermint Patty’s Hay Bale Maze, Woodstock’s Crazy Cornstalks, Linus’ Mummy Pit, and Franklin’s tractor Trek. Besides the roster of Halloween activities, there's still a sprawling amusement park to explore, with more than 20 family-friendly rides and a walk-through animatronic dinosaur exhibit.

Dates: Weekends, Sept. 15 through Oct. 28

Hersheypark In The Dark – Hershey, PA

HersheyPark

Where better to go trick-or-treating than a place known as "Chocolatetown, USA?" At Hersheypark, there's plenty of yummy candy to go around. The park's popular Halloween celebration includes a trick-or-treating trail with 13 locations winding across the entire theme park and its adjacent zoo. Got an adrenaline junkie in your brood? Hershey ups the ante on its roller coasters for Halloween, turning the lights off on four of its major coasters so that riders can experience some in-the-dark thrills exclusive to the season. Park tickets also include access to Zoo America, where tiny safari-goers can embark on a special "Creatures Of The Night" tour that'll give them a peek at what goes on after dark at the zoo.

Dates: Oct. 19-21, 26-28 and Nov. 2-4

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party – Orlando, FL

Mariah Wild/Walt Disney World

Like its West Coast counterpart, Disneyworld does it up, big-time, for Halloween. From the moment you enter through the Magic Kingdom gates, passing through an eerie veil of fog and music, you'll know that you and your costumed brood are in for it—in the best way possible! Disney's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party lives up to its hype, with a roster of events that includes gobs of generously-stocked trick-or-treating stations across the park (Psst: These are open to grown-ups, too!); a "Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular" show featuring Disney's vilest villains; photo ops with costumed characters; themed dining and desserts; a killer fireworks show set to music; and a Halloween parade heralded by a headless horseman and followed by a cheery lineup of Disney standbys waving from atop brightly-lit floats.

On top of the whimsical Halloween mayhem, most of the rides are open during the party, so when your tots are tired of trolling for candy (like that's going to happen), hop on a favorite ride and go for a whirl. You won't have wait long; insiders say ride lines are actually shorter during the Halloween party since Disney sells a limited number of tickets and so many of the kids are busy with the Halloween happenings.

Dates: Select nights now through Nov. 1.

The 8 Best Amusement Parks for Families, According to Family Vacation Critic

17 Amusement Parks to Add to Your Bucket List (with Amazing New Attractions!)

Great news! Summertime’s favorite drink also comes in cupcake form. These sweet and just-a-bit tart cupcakes are perfect for summer birthdays, BBQs or any time you want to treat the littles. Garnish with lemon wedges or fresh raspberries and a tiny straw to get that uber-cute vibe right before you stuff them into your mouth. Scroll down to see our editor’s secrets to making the perfect batch.

You will need:

Your fave lemon cake recipe (see ours below)

Red food coloring or fresh (pureed raspberries)

The perfect buttercream frosting (click here) + lemon extract + zest

Garnish (lemon wedges, raspberries, sprinkles, cute straws…you decide!)

The cake:

1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/4 tsp. baking soda

1/8 tsp. salt

1/2 cup sugar

1/3 cup frozen pink lemonade concentrate

3 egg whites

1/4 cup canola or coconut oil

1-2 tsp. lemon juice

1-2 tsp. lemon zest

1/2 cup milk

3 tbsp. raspberry puree (for the coloring)*

*You can also use red food coloring, about 3 drops, but reduce flour to 1 cup only

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Step 2: Grease a 12-cupcake pan (or line with cupcake liners).

Step 3: Mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar. Set aside.

Step 4: Whisk together egg whites, lemonade concentrate, oil, and lemon juice. Add milk. (Adding the lemon mix to the milk may cause curdling, which is okay because most recipes call for buttermilk. Adding the milk last helps cut down on this a bit). Add lemon zest.

Step 5: In a stand mixer alternate the wet mix and dry mix until well blended. (About 1 minute on medium speed).

Step 6: Add raspberry puree and blend for 2 minutes at medium speed until batter is smooth.

Step 7: Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes (or until cupcake tops spring back when touched lightly)

Step 8: Make the frosting while the cupcakes cool.

The frosting:

Use the recipe found here, but add:

1 tbsp. lemon zest

1/8 tsp. lemon extract

1 tbsp. raspberry puree* or 2 drops red food coloring

*You may need to add a little bit of extra powdered sugar to thicken the frosting once you’ve added the puree.

Step 9: Once the cupcakes have cooled, frost each cupcake. If you want it to look fancy, use a piping bag or Ziplock bag to add the frosting in a spiral. Or invest in a cupcake decorating tip-set, so you can look like you know what you are doing!

Step 10: Garnish with lemon wedges, sprinkles or a single raspberry and/or a small straw (just cut a paper straw in half) to make it look more “lemonade-y.”

Step 11: Eat a cupcake! Great job!

Just when you thought you’d seen everything that could be made from flour and frosting, Baby Bea’s Bakeshop broke ground in Beverly Hills in January. With desserts from stunning to silly, Hello Kitty to Wild Thing, custom cake behemoths to bite size nibbles, these fondant frosted fairytale creations will capture your little one’s imagination while delighting their taste buds.

Where Fashion Meets Frosting
It may have begun with a Hello Kitty fixation (one which Miss Beatrice, the Bea of Baby Bea, never fully outgrew), but along the way to perfecting her Kitty shaped cupcakes, Miss Beatrice picked up a knack for fashioning frosting atop an outrageously artful cookie, cupcake, cake pop, or multi-layered cake.  Baby Bea’s proves what you’ve secretly always known to be true: everything is more magical with frosting on top.

Does This Cake Pop Come in an Ombre?
She may not have been the first to put cake on a stick, but get a load of these options. The Peppa Pig Cake Pops are giggle getters, the rainbow sprinkle cake pops resemble every technicolor temptation known to kid-kind, and the ombre ruffle cake pops (swoon inducing in teal and pink), look like some hybrid of Vogue meets vanilla. Not just delicate and girly, there are boy bait versions, too: Star Wars cake pops delight young Jedis, and should your young Tim Burton like their dessert with a side of squeamish, check out what Miss Bea’s done with the Eyeball Cake Pop, or the Ugly Monster variety.

When A Cupcake Can Make You Cry
You know how tears can well up when you look at a work of art?  These mini to maxi treats  inspire the same awe. And there’s something for everyone and every occasion.  For that shower you have to throw, Miss Bea can go modern with a monogram.  For your kiddos, it’s more Max themed with the Where The Wild Things, or many shades of muted turquoise in her fantastical (you knew it was coming) Frozen line. Hippos to Hello Kitty, her cupcakes are a thing of edible beauty. And how they taste, well, that’s a different level of happiness entirely. Make no mistake, Baby Bea can bake.

Cultivate Good Taste with Things that Taste Good
This isn’t the bakery counter at your local market (no disrespect intended, sometimes you need a quick and inexpensive sheet cake). Hand baked, exquisitely frosted, and packaged as whatever pleases you most, each item is a work of edible art. No occasion on the horizon? No worries. Pre-made goodies are always available in store. So that you can make an occasion out of say, Monday.

L’Petite Treat
Because you don’t want to OD on the sugar, her cupcakes and the majority of her baked goods are appropriately sized for kid-kind. Just a few bites each, and that’s all it takes to get hooked.  But when you’re in the mood for something grander…

Custom Cakes Are Calling
You gotta lay eyes on these beauts: quick before the kids commandeer the process. Quite literal works of art, they’re not the most frugal find, but when you’re looking to make a statement, look no further.  The design is not the only customizable feature, either. Vegan cakes? Check. Vegan frosting? Gluten free? Check and check. For families with dietary concerns, come to the place where baked beauty does not discriminate. Just the way you want it to look, adhering to just the dietary restrictions you feared would make finding the perfect cake impossible.

But The Real Question Is…
Baby Bea does do birthday parties at her house (shop) not yours, beginning in February. Filling a birthday party niche, here finally is a place to decorate their cupcake and eat it too. All inclusive cookie or cupcake decorating for a petite party of 8 kids or under is waiting for you to just book it. In a dedicated, sun lit space, the room’s all ready and everything’s handled, call for prices and details.

The New Bakery on the Block
Robertson may have already been ripe with fun family friendly finds (like the beloved Joey’s Gym), but a new beaut of a bakery puts the cherry on top of anything, most especially this bustling boulevard. The smashing window dressings are more Manhattan than mid-way to the 10: they stop strollers in their tracks. Yet like the baked goods, the store’s trappings are visual candy, but the taste is the real treat.

Planning an outdoor shindig for your birthday girl or boy has its pros and cons, and they both revolve around the weather. You could get a picture-perfect day (not too hot, not too cold, sunshine galore). Or, it could be raining cats and dogs. Don’t let a little drizzle fizzle kiddo’s fete. Check out these awesome alternative venues that welcome last minute reservations, are dirt cheap (or free), and are just as fun.

Photo: Adventure Park USA via Facebook

Adventure Park
It’s one of these places that specializes in birthdays, but they also have a large cafeteria area where you can BYOC (bring your own cake) and then let the party goers loose for some indoor fun. They offer a massive arcade, a climbing/ropes course area, laser tag, and even a separate play area for the under-five set. Added awesome: if the sun makes an appearance, there is a roller coaster (and a ton of other seriously fun outdoor activities) to partake in.
Cost: Passes and food vary, but they offer all day ride passes

Play and Learn Playground Superstores
Technically these venues are for shopping, but for those with little ones who are free to book a party during the week, they can be a great oh-my-gosh-it’s-pouring-out way to salvage some play time on your child’s big day. You can’t do cake and gifts, but you can all get together and play and then head over to a nearby eatery to enjoy your party provisions together. The Columbia location has play hours Monday-Friday on a walk-in basis, but the Chantilly store requires reservations and is only open to play on Thursdays (so if the weather man gives you a heads up Wednesday night, you’re all set!).

You can also enjoy cupcake decorating with your crew on site (for a small additional fee).

Sky Zone Trampoline Park
This place gets crazy busy on the weekends, but you can buy your entrance time in advance online and then have your party crew meet up for a couple of hours of jumping fun. Then when you’re done, hit the cafe area for slushies from their concession stand or dole out pieces of cake. Big kids even think this place is cool (the dodge ball and the b-ball dunking area is on the list of must-do’s for tweens). Only draw back, it’s not cheap.

The Mall
Many area shopping centers have made space for indoor play areas to break up the monotony of shopping for the kids. Generally these areas are geared toward younger children so if you’re hosting a party for the preschool set and need a backup plan stat, a local mall play space may be the perfect solution. You can meet up for play and then head to the food court for snacks and cake. One of our local faves to try? The play area at Tyson’s Corner. You can let the little people run around a bit (for free) and then splurge on a train ride if you wish. Maryland peeps might want to try The Forest Play Area at Lakeforest Mall. It’s large and there is seating nearby for post play snack time.

What are your plans for Valentine’s Day? Spread the word in the Comments below!

— Maria Barnes

Remember when selecting a cake was as simple as choosing chocolate or vanilla? Nowadays the word cake–and cupcake in particular–brings to mind a truly extraordinary confection experience. The gourmet cupcake has changed the dessert game, turning our kiddos from sugar craving shorties to expert little foodies. Simply put, the uninspired, boxed cake just doesn’t cut it any more. And with gourmet bakeries spreading like wildfire, a big question arises — Whose cupcakes really take the cake? We’ve asked and you’ve answered which of America’s cupcakeries are the cream of the crop. From north to south and east to west, here are the best American cupcake bakeries.

Ready, set, drool…

Baked by Melissa – New York, New York

Why we love them: Not only are their mini-cupcakes perfect for little hands, the cupcake creator unleashes the mad baker in all of us. They even have mini-cupcakes dipped in chocolate!

Magnolia Bakery – New York, New York

Why we love them: Sex and the City was their claim to fame, but Magnolia’s über yummy little cakes keep them in the spotlight. The “Hummingbird” cupcake (banana, pineapple, and pecan, oh my!) continues to be a favorite for grownups and the little ones.

Queen City Cupcakes – Manchester, New Hampshire

Why we love them: Their truly inspired flavors range from the kiddo-friendly “Butterfinger”  to the grownup-friendly “Margarita” with everything delicious and sometimes strange in between, like “Chocolate Covered Potato Chip”. And east coasters can agree that any establishment that offers “Cannoli” flavored cupcakes is a good find.
