Your fave female detective is back at it again. The recently-released Nancy Drew movie, Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, takes the original 1939 story by Carolyn Keene and updates it for a modern YA audience.

Chances are you read your fair share of Nancy Drew novels as a child. And it’s also just as likely that your mom—and possibly grandmother—did the same. Now the daring Drew is ready to meet your own kiddo in this old-but-new story.

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase follows the fearless female lead as she moves to the oh-so-small and not-so-interesting fictional town River Heights. The 2019 adaptation, which debuted in theaters on Mar. 15, stars a red-headed Sophia Lillis (who you may remember from the super-scary IT) as Drew.

The millennial-ized character still retains her feisty nature, with plenty of intellect, independence and so much more.

If you haven’t seen the new flick, or if you have and you just want more, check out this behind-the-scenes look at Twin Elms, on which the film’s central spookiness focuses. In the YouTube clip, Lillis takes us all on a sneak peek tour of the house—and it totally doesn’t disappoint.

The Live-Action “Dora the Explorer” Trailer Is Here & It’s Definitely Not for Little Kids

When nine-year-old Riley Morrison wrote to Steph Curry over her disappointment that his line of kids shoes was only made for boys, he made a promise to her to change it. And now he’s come through on that promise with new Steph Curry sneakers for girls.

Last year, Riley wrote Curry a letter when she discovered the star’s shoe line, Under Armour Curry 5 Grade School, were not available in girls’ sizes. Her dad shared the letter on Instagram and, not only did Curry respond with his own letter, he made promise to correct it—and present her with a special surprise on International Women’s Day. And boy was it a good surprise!

Just in time to celebrate amazing women and girls around the world, Curry unveiled his new line of sneakers for girls. Curry had a already been planning to create a Curry 6 colorway to celebrate International Women’s Day and honor the women in his life, including his wife and three daughter, so it was only fitting he invited Riley to be included in the designing of the new Curry 6 United We Win colorway.

“I’ve been kinda blown away, and certainly grateful for the opportunities that Stephen has given me, including sharing inspiration for other girls through the sockliner art. This has been such an incredible experience,” said Riley.

In addition to a “United We Win” sockliner, Riley designed a sockliner that features two girls playing basketball, surrounded by the words that inspired Riley to play the role of a Uniter, such as “Be Fearless,” “Girl Power,” “Be the Change,” Girls Hoop Too” and “Rock the Currys.” Shoppers also have the option to customize a sockliner with their own photo.

The new Curry 6 United We Win is available at UA.com for $130. Sales of the shoes will go toward a scholarship established by the Stephen and Ayesha Curry Family Foundation and Under Armour to honor Riley’s courageous spirit. The scholarship will be given annually on International Women’s Day to a worthy college-bound female student from the Bay Area.

If you’re looking for some true inspiration, this mom’s Black History Month photos are absolutely everything. Sasha Bonner wanted to give her toddler daughter, Riley Johnson, a strong foundation. So the North Carolina mom started snapping pics of her two-year-old dressed as famous and fearless black women icons.

Bonner initially started this project as a way to bond with her daughter and inspire her little girl. After posting the photos on Instagram, these dress-up pics became something much more.

The mom wanted her two-year-old to grow up having heroes that looked like her. In an interview with TODAY Parents, Bonner said, “Growing up, it wasn’t really showcased for us even when it came to female (role models) let alone African-American women.”

So, what famous faces did Riley portray during these fab photo shoots? The pairs’ Beyonce photo shoot was a favorite for both mother and daughter. Bonner is a mega fan of the singer and Riley reportedly enjoyed getting to wear lipstick.

Another top pick for the toddler was their photo of prima ballerina Misty Copeland. According to her mom, Riley enjoys ballet—and she already had the tutu!

Along with these famous women, Riley’s pics also included aviatrix Bessie Coleman, the first African American female to hold a pilot’s license.

Put your dancing shoes on, because Netflix is about to debut its first Latin-American musical for young audiences. Go! Vive a Tu Manera is coming to the streaming service and it’s impossible not want to join in the fun.

The new series follows Mia, a talented and fearless girl who receives a dance scholarship to the prestigious Saint Mary’s Academy, for its acclaimed performing arts department and elite students. Mia finds it challenging to fit in at her new school as she clashes with the most popular and talented girl at the Academy—who (of course) happens to be the owner’s daughter. Mia finds her way, however, with the support of her new friends and the unlikely attention of the school’s basketball star, who is also her rival’s brother.

Whew! That’s a lot to keep track of—but this trailer makes it look pretty rad.

For fans that fall in love with the series’ songs, the soundtrack features 13 original songs from the show and will be available for purchase as CD or digital download. Go! Vive a Tu Manera will premiere on Netflix beginning Feb. 22.

The One Goal I Set That Changed My Entire Life

Photo: Pixabay

My name is Natasha Nurse and the goal that changed my life was choosing to be happy. This seems like an obvious goal that everyone should have, but sadly, it is not the case. So many people are unhappy in the United States (especially in New York).

It was December 2015, and I was told I was losing my job. When this happens to most people, the first thing they want to do is panic. For me, I saw an opportunity to live my life in a whole new way. I decided to live by the following six principles:

  1. Commit to my life motto: meet someone new and learn something new every day

  2. Be happy every single day

  3. Be daring and fearless, no matter what

  4. Accept there is no such thing as failure — only teachable lessons

  5. Live without regret (life is too short to live with regrets)

  6. Accept there is no such thing as no — only maybe not now or maybe with someone else

These principles helped keep me sane, focused and happy as I began my journey as an entrepreneur. This was the journey that not only gave me immense joy, but has led to opportunities in modeling, media, podcasting, radio broadcasting and journalism that I couldn’t have even imagined for myself.

The goal of being happy turned out to be the most important goal that I could have ever set for myself. Now, since living this way, I couldn’t imagine living any other way.

Now that you know my one goal that changed my life, I think it is important to focus on the practical steps I took to apply and stay committed to this goal. Here are my seven steps to success.

1. Get clear on your intention.

My one goal was happiness, because I was a person who focused on accomplishing many things in my life (starting at a very young age) but no one told me that I needed to make sure I was happy. Happiness was like an afterthought or completely irrelevant. I was groomed to be productive and accomplished. However, I soon realized accomplishments without a sense of happiness or joy was completely pointless, so I needed to make a change. I knew that if I shifted how I defined what success meant, then my entire life would change.

2. Create an action plan.

Goals are great. But if there isn’t an action plan in place, how likely are you to achieve that goal? Zero to None. For me to be happy, I needed to be very clear on identifying what made me happy. Luckily, I am fairly low maintenance, so the things on my happiness list include:

  • Reading everyday

  • Napping (when I really need it)

  • Dancing

  • Singing

  • Shopping (mostly on Vudu or Amazon)

  • Prioritizing my needs

  • Being creative (i.e. drawing, coloring, sketching, painting)

  • Creating and developing ideas with the hubby

  • Relaxing with the pets

  • Watching movies and television shows (no matter how many times I have watched them)

  • Working on my business (i.e. coaching, consulting, speaking at events, creating online content, etc.)

What was my action plan for happiness? It was simple. If I do at least one activity on this happiness list a day, then I was successful for the day. If I accomplish more than one activity, then I am a super star.

3. Eliminate distractors or deterrence.

Eliminating naysayers, haters and toxic people was a huge step for me to take to succeed. Why? Those individuals are drowning in their own misery so much, they can’t help but attempt to bring you down as well. For me, cutting these people out of my life was the only way  to have the freedom of time and mental capacity to focus on me, my business, and what I want to accomplish in this world. If you are determined to accomplish your goal, you will find yourself in the same boat (hint: this will be hard at first, but you will thank yourself repeatedly).

4. Hold yourself accountable.

When achieving a new goal, do you think it is important to have benchmarks along the way? Well, it is. In order to achieve a goal, you have to have tasks and steps along the way. You should attach deadlines to these to ensure your goal gets accomplished. As an overachiever, my goal is really a lifetime goal, so I needed to create a plan that required me to be accountable each day (aka Happiness Checklist). If you are working towards accomplishing a goal, how will you hold yourself accountable?

5. Be kind to yourself.

We can be our number one advocate or our very worst enemy. When we stumble or sometimes fall flat on our faces, it might seem natural to get down on ourselves. But I am here to tell you to stop it! This is neither helpful nor necessary for accomplishing your goal. Sometimes you are not going to hit the ball out of the park. Sometimes you will strike out. That is not only okay, it is a good thing. Stumbling or “failures” are a teachable moment where you can learn. Life is all about learning more about yourself and the world you live in.

If there are days where I don’t get to check something off my happiness list, I don’t tell myself that I failed. Instead, I accept that I didn’t take care of myself for the day. I identify what stood in the way of prioritizing my happiness, then make an action plan so that the next day I am back on target. Most of all, I am kind and understanding to myself. That is the only way to make sure I can start the next day with the best mindset and attitude possible.

6. Acknowledge every victory.

No victory is too small or too large to celebrate. By celebrating every victory, you are giving yourself motivation and confidence to keep pushing towards your goal. You can’t expect anyone to do this for you. Your goal will never be as important to anyone else as it is to you. So, smile and appreciate every victory along the way.

7. Document the process.

If you document your process (the good, the bad, and everything in between), then the following will happen:

  • You will have a record of the journey to look back and reflect on

  • You will see just how much blood, sweat, and tears went into achieving your goal

  • You will inspire others to pursue their dreams and to share their journey as well

  • You will publicly hold yourself accountable for what you are looking to achieve

It might not be easy to document the journey. When you achieve your goal however, you will be happy you took the time to document how you made your dream a reality!

The Wall Street area, or FiDi, as it’s sometimes now called, used to be just for bankers and tourists on their way to the Statue of Liberty. No more! The downtown neighborhood, and the surrounding area (The Battery, Battery Park City, etc.) rebounded from the tough times post-9/11, and now offers numerous ways for families to appreciate both old and new aspects of the southern tip of Manhattan. Read on for all the hot spots, and plan your day downtown!

The Oculus
Is it a spaceship? An alien creature? A trippy ice formation erupting from below? It’s actually a transportation hub and deluxe shopping center, the latter of which is called Westfield World Trade Center. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the Oculus is worth a trip to have a look inside (very sci-fi), even if you don’t want to buy anything. If you do, numerous high end retailers and places to snack (including Eataly downtown) are happy to take your money. It’s worth checking Westfield’s event calendar, as it hosts lots of fun and free happenings.

Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island
It’s not just for tourists! As New Yorker’s we’re jaded because we see her every day, but up-close-and-personal, she’s truly awe-inspiring. The smart move here is to buy tickets in advance to skip the line to purchase them (it can be considerable, and you’ll save a lot of time and hassle.) Visitors can go on and inside Lady Liberty (the base, the arm) but you must buy a ticket in advance, and these sell out well ahead of time — so if it’s on your bucket list, plan accordingly. But standing at her feet is plenty impressive. In addition to the main attraction, Liberty Island is also a nice place to picnic, with lots of shaded lawn space to hang out. Pack a lunch; food options are fine, but nothing special, and of course, pricey.

Head over to Ellis Island for an amazing lesson the history of New York, and America overall!

St. Paul’s Chapel
Part of Trinity Church, St. Paul’s Chapel is truly an historic New York City site, and celebrated its 250th anniversary. This is also the building that miraculously went undamaged, even though the twin towers fell across the street. (The chapel served as an ongoing rescue and relief center in the months that followed.) Being a single mom is an all-day, everyday job. You don’t get a lot of breaks or time to not be a mom. One of the things that are really important to me as a mom is making sure that Reese is fearless and doesn’t allow “being a girl” to stop her. So many times as women we are told not to do certain things (like travel) alone because they just aren’t safe.

When you’re a single woman and you’re traveling, that can become even more complicated. Not only are you concerned about keeping yourself safe, you also have to protect these precious babies of yours. That doesn’t mean that you have to stop traveling altogether, that just means that it is time for you to start considering safety first.

Reese and I are headed out this summer on a West Coast road trip and before we do that, I have to check off some items on my safety list. The main objective is to have a great time, and we can’t do that if we don’t get there in one piece! If you’re thinking about packing the kiddos up for a road trip, make sure you keep these safety tips in mind:

Oil Change

For starters, if you’re going to be taking a road trip, you’re going to need to make certain that your car is in tip-top shape. Part of good car maintenance is getting your regularly scheduled inspections and maintenance, especially oil changes. If you’re a hands-on girl, and you know how to change your own oil, you can grab what you need and DIY it.

If you’re not handy at all, don’t worry there are several places that can change your oil for you at a reasonable rate. I like Walmart or I look for coupons on the back of my grocery receipt.

Emergency Kit

There are certain emergencies that are likely to come up when you’re traveling, and much of them are car related. It always really important to be prepared just in case. Put together an emergency kit that includes:

  • Spare tire and/or a fix a flat product
  • Jumper Cables
  • First Aid Kit

If you have all of these items on hand, you’ll be able to deal with whatever comes at you while you’re on the road.

Emergency Roadside Service

Emergency roadside service is a lifesaver. If you can’t change your tire, if you run out of gas, if something goes wrong with the car that you can’t identify, they will be there. It is like having a handyman available to you no matter where you are.

If you haven’t looked into these types of services yet, you are cheating yourself. Take the time to check and make certain you haven’t already paid for this service. Certain car dealers provide roadside assistance when you purchase a new car. Many cell phone providers offer roadside assistance for an additional fee on your bill every month and you can even get it covered under your auto policy. There really is no excuse to be stranded on the side of the road with no help.

Be Well Rested

Never drive when you are tired. Driving when sleepy can actually be just as dangerous as drunk driving. I know that people glorify not stopping to rest on the road, and getting there all in one shot, but you don’t have to be anyone’s hero. Plan on taking breaks along the way. When you’re driving, especially with your children, you want to be alert at all times.

Watch the Gas

The very last thing you want is to be stuck on the side of the road after having run out of gas. Not only does it put a damper on your time schedule, it can be scary and unsafe and lastly. it’s kinda embarrassing (especially as a woman).

How do you avoid that mishap? You absolutely must watch your gas meter. Keep an eye on your gas, especially when you are driving late at night, in unfamiliar territory, and in unknown locations. It is a terrible feeling to need to get gas and drive mile after mile with no way to determine if your car will make it to the gas station. You don’t want that with your babies in the car. Fill up as soon as the sun goes down, just in case and never let the tank dip below half.

It doesn’t take much to stay safe on the road, just a little prior planning before you hop behind the wheel. You absolutely can get this done!
