There are a million ways to express yourself through what you wear. And there’s no right way to do it—not really. It varies from person to person, occasion to occasion, and day to day. But following a few guidelinescan help you feel your absolute best.

As a former personal stylist, our shopping editor has 8 tips that apply across the board, no matter who you are, what your personal style is, where you live, or what your work or home life looks like. In her opinion, a fashion faux pas is really just anything that doesn’t feel good when you wear it. Make sure to adjust these tips to fit (pardon the pun) whatever you feel great wearing.

1. Don’t ignore your waist.

Mistake: Wearing clothes that don’t flatter your body shape can leave you feeling a bit off-balance. Your waist, no matter how you feel about it, is the central part of your silhouette and is where your whole look comes together.

Solution: Choose pieces that play up your best bits. Got a pear shape? A-line skirts and tops that cinch at the waist, or a medium-width belt to define your middle can work wonders to create a more balanced silhouette. Have a more petite frame? Avoid anything that swallows you up and create the illusion of a bit of a soft curve with, again, a thin belt. Beautifully broad shoulders and/or bust? Have you heard about belts? A wide belt complements broader shoulders, busts, and hips.

2. Embrace the basics.

Mistake: Focusing only on statement pieces without the basics to tie everything together? Not a good look. Trust us, it’s so important to have neutral, classic items to mix and match with the bolder options in your closet.

Solution: Build your wardrobe on classics like white shirts, blazers, and jeans. They’re the foundation of any killer outfit.

3. Don’t overdo it.

Mistake: Trying to squeeze every trend into one outfit can leave you feeling more chaotic than cool.

Solution: Focus on one or two trends or statement pieces per outfit, then keep the rest low-key and classic for a polished look. Think: a bold blouse with tailored work trousers, printed shorts with a classic white tee, or a vintage patterned dress with simple solid slides. If you’re wearing a matching set or one-piece (romper, jumpsuit, etc.) with a fun pattern, keep the jewelry simple and slightly understated. We’re letting those statement pieces do the talking here.

4. Avoid visible bra straps.

Mistake: Letting your bra straps peek out from under your clothes can cramp your style.

Solution:  Invest in strapless bras or accessories like clear straps to keep your undergarments discreet. Or go for tops and dresses with built-in support to keep everything looking seamless.

5. Let your accessories shine.

Mistake: Going overboard with accessories can ruin a look.

Solution: Choose a few standouts to elevate your look and let them do the work. If you’re sporting a bold statement necklace, go easy on the earrings and bracelets to keep the focus where it belongs.

6. Avoid disheveled clothing when you can.

Mistake: Wearing wrinkled, stained, or damaged clothes can make you look like you just rolled out of bed (we totally get that sometimes you did and that’s fine). It happens! Don’t beat yourself up here. But if you’re feeling less-than pulled-together, de-rumpling your wardrobe is super helpful.

Solution: Freshen up! Take the time to care for your clothes properly by laundering, ironing, and storing them with care. Repair any damages pronto, like loose threads or missing buttons, to keep your clothes looking crisp and clean.

7. Comfort is always key.

Mistake: Sacrificing comfort for the sake of fashion? No, thank you so much.

Solution: Look for clothes and shoes that feel as good as they look. When you’re comfy, you’ll shine from the inside out. So many options combine comfort and style, so don’t settle for something you think looks good if it feels awful. Chances are, you’ll find a similar piece that’s better and more comfortable if you look a little longer.

Our Picks:

woman wearing oversized button down shirt and denim skirt

8. Lead with your personal style.

Mistake: Following trends without considering your personal style can leave you feeling like you’re wearing someone else’s clothes.
Solution: Curate a wardrobe that reflects who you are and makes you feel confident. Experiment with different styles, silhouettes, and colors to find what makes you feel like your best self!

We know you’re running around all day long. As moms, it’s a lot of constant jogging (both mentally and physically!) from task to task, kiddo to kiddo, practice to practice, work to home to the store…we totally know how it goes. And that can do a number on your feet. It seems like great shoes shouldn’t be a form of self care, but it really is. We don’t mean “great shoes” like the newest gorgeous-but-horribly-uncomfortable pumps that you saw on Insta. The best mom shoes look great and feel great.

It may feel like you’ve tried them all, but trust us; we have, too. We’ve had the blisters, the chafing, the swelling, the so-sore-they’re-numb toes. Putting our feet through it all so you don’t have to is what we’re here for. You have way too much going on (remember all that running?) to worry about finding the best mom shoes. We did the hard part for you. These are our favorite mom-ready shoes, from athletic to fashion to work to home, that we turn to every single day to keep us going.

If the idea of swimsuit season makes you tense up, stick with us. We know it’s not always easy to fully embrace our bodies, but times are a-changin’! Social media, fashion websites, even store mannequins have gotten with the program and are showcasing a wide range of body types. Now more than ever,  it’s much easier to find models and influencers that represent our own bodies. And although there’s definitely a lot of work still to be done as far as size inclusivity goes across the board, there’s progress in the air. The body positivity movement isn’t going anywhere, so the perfect mom swimsuit is out there. We promise.

Let’s remember, no matter how you feel about your body, every body is a beach body. Our kids just want us to put on the bathing suit and spend the season creating memories with them. Not only do they not care about your oh-so-human “imperfections”, they likely don’t even see them. We can guarantee that no one sees what you consider to be flaws the same way that you do. At the end of the day, we want to set an example for our children. Showing them that their own bodies are perfect just as they are starts with us learning to love our own. We aren’t saying it’s that simple; but we are saying that the first step in getting comfortable at the beach or pool is just doing it. Putting on the swimsuit and getting out there. And we’re here to help.

These mom swimsuits from Amazon are totally mom-friendly. They’re flattering, confidence-boosting, and downright cute. We’ve made sure that they’re also supportive, offer various levels of coverage, and include a wide range of sizes. These are some seriously adorable and wearable suits that we’re confident you’ll feel great in. Get ready to flaunt that hot (yes, hot!) bod this spring and summer in one of these mom swimsuits, all snaggable from Amazon!

SweatyRocks

This little number is like a bikini without the commitment. It also comes in a ton of colors so you may want to pick up more than one!

Amazon Review: I have an athletic build (with a few extra winter pounds in this pic ;) but love the suit for the most part. I wish it was a little less cheeky / narrow cut in the back and the off shoulder side was a little higher for a little more chest coverage. Overall very happy with it. Quality fabric and stays in place. I returned L because it was too small and the XL fits well. I usually I'm somewhere between a medium and large both for top and bottom. —SavvyStagerAndHomeMaker

Do you prefer to keep your blood circulation in tact? This is the best shapewear for you (really!).

Shapewear has come a long way (you know, from lace-up corsets and stuff). Most of us aren’t willing to wear control-top pantyhose every day or want to avoid taking a deep breath. Which is, of course, very reasonable. But the thing is, sometimes we just want to smooth things out. Add a little shape. Feel a bit more ‘held’. And we want to do that while maintaining blood flow to our extremities. We looked high and low and found the best shapewear that managed to tick all the boxes.

We want you to feel great in your body, so we’re definitely not pushing a whole reshaping of your already gorgeous figure. The best shapewear can just be a tool to feel put together and supported, without completely revamping your bod. Of course, if you feel most comfortable with strong compression, we’ve got options there, too. But really, we want to reframe shapewear as an enhancement to your beautiful body rather than mega camouflage. And we refuse to feel like we can’t sit down or eat a meal while we’re wearing it. These are the gold standard in comfort + support, if we do say so ourselves.

This former middle school teacher is going viral for talking about how quitting for a job at Costco saved her mental health, and it’s sparking a conversation we need to have about how teachers are treated

There’s no denying that teachers are very necessary heroes in our children’s lives. They spend their days nurturing, educating, and caring about kids that aren’t even their own. They also frequently work outside of their paid hours, spend their own money on classroom necessities, and face insane laws that limit their free speech. And they do it all for pretty abysmal pay that leaves them struggling to afford a decent standard of living in many places. Now, a former middle school teacher’s video about quitting teaching to take a job at Costco is going viral—and shining a light on all these issues and more.

The video shows a day in the life for Maggie Perkins, who quit her middle school teaching job after eight years in education, and now works at Costco.

@itsmaggieperkins

I used to be a teacher and now I work at Costco. This is my first year not having a winter break. I do not miss it at all. My pace of my work life now is so much better, I am not sick or exhausted like I used to be when I was a teacher. When I was a teacher I used my winter break basically to recover and go into the next semester of just surviving. fformerteachertteacherquittokccostcotiktokrretailworkereexteachertiktokccareertransitiont#teachersonbreak

♬ original sound – Maggie Perkins 🍉

“This is my first year not having a winter break, and how do I feel? I feel great,” she says at the beginning of the clip.

Perkins explains that even though she worked seven straight days during the Christmas shopping rush, she feels better and more rested than she did as a teacher who got a weeks-long winter break.

“When I got to Christmas break, I was so exhausted that I was literally sick,” she says. “I am better now that I have been in my livable memory.”

Maybe even more heartbreaking than Perkins’ video are the comments from other teachers.

“I’m a HS math teacher and I compare teaching like being in an abusive marriage,” one wrote. “You’re scared to leave.”

In an interview with Buzzfeed, Perkins said she finally left education for a simple reason: she ran out of reasons to stay.

“I began to see that I had no boundaries, and when I established boundaries I experienced intense gaslighting to coerce me to stay and be overworked,” she said. “I left because my success as an educator was measured by how well I ignored systemic issues, how compliant I was, and how much trauma I could endure while smiling and doing it ‘for the kids.'”

Hanukkah is the 18th and Christmas is next week. The last thing you should have to worry about is what’s for dinner between now and then.

Hanukkah starts tomorrow, December 18th. Christmas is next week. It’s safe to say we’re a little busy. Obviously, we love the holidays and almost everything that comes with them. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t just absolutely slammed with merry-making duties. The countdown is on and that means that it’s super speed to shop, wrap, write, bake, clean, and 10 things we’re probably forgetting. We just don’t have time to answer the daily “what’s for dinner?” question. So this is absolutely when we look to the best meals from HelloFresh even more than we usually do!

And we’re not stressing about HelloFresh blowing our gift budgets, either. Meals start at $7.99 a serving, making it 25% cheaper than takeout, and less expensive than grocery shopping. It’s safe to say that our holidays are a lot easier with HelloFresh (and some extra coffee!).

It's impossible not to crave the maple syrup harissa-seasoned carrots in this dish! Served bowl-style (hello, easy dishwasher loading!), those carrots are served up with turmeric-seasoned couscous, crunchy kale chips flavored with garlic, creamy hummus, and topped with dried cranberries and walnuts. We're seriously drooling just thinking about it.

Who'd complain about Burger Night? These BBQ Cheddar Burgers start with an onion-studded seasoned burger patty, topped with melty cheddar, BBQ-spiked onions, and chipotle mayo, then wrapped in toasty buns. Add oven-fresh fries on the side (of course) and you have an extra hand to track packages while you wait.

Smoky Barramundi with Brown Butter + Mashed Potatoes & Roasted Broccoli

Restaurant style, right at home! Paprika-rubbed barramundi fillets drizzled with a lemon and scallion brown butter sauce. It's served with roasted broccoli and sour cream mashed potatoes and ready in 35 minutes. Seriously? Seriously.

This dish is pure amore. Chef-created individual pork meatloaf layered with classic red sauce and a cheesy panko topping. With a crispy-melty baked crust and a side of spaghetti marinara, this updated version of an old fave is a new fave for us.

One-Pan Cheesy Black Bean Tacos

We don't even care what follows the words "one-pan"; we're in. In this case, though, add hearty black beans, green peppers, two kinds of cheese, red pepper crema, and a 15 minute prep time, and we're there for it.

Crispy Chickpea & Kale Salad with Cucumber, Pickled Shallot & Lemony Tahini Dressing Visit

Kale is still one of the best superfoods out there, so you can feel great about this salad. Massaged kale (so it's not too chewy) is coated in a tahini-garlic-lemon-yogurt dressing, then tossed with cucumbers and pickled shallots. Topped with seasoned extra-crispy chickpeas, you don't even have to be a salad person to love it!

Bavette Steak & Sherry Shallot Sauce with Garlic Parmesan Potato Clusters & Mixed Greens

Made it to the end of the week? Time for a reward, especially during the holiday week! In 40 minutes, we're cooking up bavette steaks drizzled in a rich pan sherry shallot sauce with cheesy garlic potatoes and fresh greens. It's Winter Vacation-worthy for sure!

The Benefits of Pre & Postnatal Massage

Massage therapy involves the manipulation of muscles and other soft tissues of the body to relieve pain and heal injuries. Both pre-natal and postpartum massage help to relieve muscle soreness, manage stress and anxiety, and improve sleep quality. At Moon Rabbit, we encourage both moms-to-be and new moms to schedule pre- and postnatal massages; not only do they feel great, but they are also good for you and your baby’s health. Here are a few benefits to both pre and postnatal massage therapy.

The Benefits of Pre-Natal Massage

1. Relieves nerve and muscle pain. Many women experience joint pain during pregnancy. Prenatal massage therapy focuses on inflamed nerves by helping release tension in nearby muscles. This also improves blood circulation, reducing the swelling of the joints during pregnancy by stimulating soft tissue and decreasing fluid build-up around the joints. Additionally, improved blood flow helps the body’s lymphatic system (part of the circulatory and immune systems) work more efficiently by assisting in the removal of toxins and tissue waste. Along with joint pain, prenatal massage therapy can help reduce neck and back pain including sciatica, edema (swelling of the feet), and leg cramping.

2. Provides stress and anxiety relief. Studies have shown that prenatal massage helps to increase serotonin and dopamine—two of our happy, feel-good hormones—while decreasing stress hormones like cortisol and norepinephrine. Prenatal massage improves overall relaxation and health, including decreased depression and anxiety. A study including women who received bi-weekly massages for only five weeks, results showed reduced levels of cortisol and norepinephrine, as well as increased levels of dopamine and serotonin. Especially during a woman’s second and third trimester of pregnancy when women are typically most uncomfortable and in need of relief, prenatal massage can act as an effective tool to ensuring mental and physical comfort.

3. Improves labor outcomes and newborn health. The positive changes in hormone levels also lead to fewer complications during birth and less instances of birth complications, such as low birth weight. This strongly suggests that there are maternal and newborn health benefits when prenatal massage is included into regular prenatal care. In a study focusing on labor pain, women who were treated with prenatal massage therapy experienced significantly lower pain levels and their labors were on average three hours shorter with less need for medication. Additional evidence shows that massage can decrease carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy.

The Benefits of Postnatal / Postpartum Massage:

1. Improves lactation. One of the causes of the disruption of breastfeeding is the decrease in milk production. Postpartum massage has been shown to increase levels of prolactin, the main hormone involved in lactation. Relaxation in the chest muscles opens the shoulders, improving lactation; postpartum massage not only relieves breast pain, but also decreases sodium levels and improves newborn suckling. Studies determining the effectiveness of postnatal massage have shown that postpartum mothers experienced a significant positive effect on the production of prolactin, easing the sometimes emotionally and physically taxing process of breastfeeding.

2. Improves recovery time of uterus. “After pains” consist of the uterine contractions experienced after the delivery of the placenta. These contractions serve to restore the uterus to its pre-pregnant state and can be uncomfortable—hence, the name. Fundal massage is a uterine massage technique used by medical professionals to help the uterus go back to its usual size. Additionally, abdominal massage has been found to benefit mothers by encouraging uterine involution, the process of the uterus returning to its pre-pregnant state, and the expelling of lochia (postpartum bleeding).

3. Decreases stress and improves sleep. It’s common to feel exhausted after giving birth and especially as mothers take care of their newborns. Postnatal massage can ease fatigue, encourage relaxation, and improve quality of sleep. Research indicates that postnatal massage helped sleep quality among women who suffered from postpartum insomnia. Sixty postpartum women reporting poor sleep quality were randomly assigned to an intervention group (undergoing massage therapy) or a control group (no massage therapy). Those assigned to the intervention group reported significantly better sleep quality.

Both prenatal and postpartum massage benefit the mental and physical well-being of new mothers and their newborns. Keep these benefits in mind when scheduling pre and postnatal massage appointments can help ensure a more comfortable, manageable pregnancy and postpartum journey.
