Recall Alert: Dole Recalls Blueberry Packages Due to Infection Potential

If you live in Illinois, Maine, New York, or Wisconsin, check your blueberries! The FDA announced that Dole is recalling clamshell packages of fresh blueberries due to potential cyclospora contamination. It’s a parasite that can cause intestinal infection, including vomiting, diarrhea and severe abdominal pain.

The berries were packed between May 28 and June 9 and you can identify a problematic package by the UPC code or the product lot code (see the FDA release for the full product lot code list). Four UPC codes are affected:

0 71430 01154 6
0 71430 01151 5
07143001150 8
071430011155 3

If you find a package with one of these codes in your home, discard it immediately. No other Dole products are affected by this recall. If you have any questions, you can call the Dole Consumer Center at 1-800-356-3111, which is open 24 hours a day.

Fortunately, no illnesses have been reported yet in association with the recall.

DIY Tissue Paper Covered Pots

Brown terracotta pots can be so, well, boring. Give those beloved plants a brag-worthy container with materials you most likely already have laying around your house—think scissors, tissue paper and glue. Who would have thought that these basic materials could have you and your kids quickly transforming those ho-hum planters into their very own design statement?

Good to Know: While you can use plain white glue, grab Mod Podge if you can. It's an all-in-one type of glue that not only acts as a binding agent, it also seals and finishes your projects, makes them waterproof, and safe for outdoor use.

Project length: A few hours to let the coats of glue dry between applications.

Painted Rainbow Fan Blades

Part science experiment part boredom buster, this spin-art-inspired project will cast rainbow rays on hot summer days. And if rainbows aren't your thing, choose a color scheme that matches your room decor—alternating black and white or blue and white stripes will look super chic.

Well, nothing is more personal than using those little hands in your home to create a colorful alphabet art piece. If the whole alphabet seems overwhelming, just pick one or a couple of your favorite letters and collage them together.

Good to Know: If you are going to complete the whole alphabet, handprint the same colors at the same time. So, if you are starting with red, handprint all the red-based letters first.

Length of Project: A couple of "letters" can be finished in under an hour, but the whole alphabet may take a couple of days to complete depending on your kid's patience level.

Good to Know: The trick to achieving the ombre look is to saturate the top of the lampshade with spray paint and then let the paint disperse down the shade, where it will fade to white.

But this workhorse of a furniture piece (arts and crafts table, snack and dinner table) doesn't have to look like it came from a big-box store. Brainstorm with your kids about which game they love the most, and transform this piece of furniture by using self-adhesive vinyl in classic game board colors.

Good to Know: Plan to seal the vinyl with a clear topcoat to protect the vinyl from getting torn or rolling up at the edges.

Length of Project: A couple of hours to measure, adhere vinyl and seal.

Decide which colors and what type of design you'll use, and then with just a sponge brush and fabric paint, you'll miraculously have a new chair in the house the kids can fight over.

Good to Know: Kids can design and cut a sponge into a shape—a star, a heart or a cloud are all good ideas—and use that to create a pattern on the chair.

Good to Know: While these bloggers choose to back the cork with a wood backing to minimize pinholes in the drywall, you can skip that step if you are okay with potentially having to fix the wall down the road from overzealous pinners.

You've heard of tie-dye but have you tried ice dye? This DIY project is more like a science experiment, but whoever said home improvement and science don't mix? A couple of throw pillows and then a plain white duvet cover.

Good to Know: This project can be messy and dusty—plastic gloves and a mask are essential for everyone involved in this project.

Incredible Climbing Walls That Reach New Heights

Recall Alert: IKEA Recalls Dinnerware Due to Burn Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall for IKEA HEROISK and TALRIKA bowls, plates and mugs. Made from PLA material from renewable sources, the products can become brittle and break, which may cause hot food or liquids to leak and cause burns.

The affected products were sold in a variety of colors including yellow, pink and blue. IKEA has been notified of 123 reports of issues worldwide, including four reports of injuries, most of which were burns.

Consumers can check if their products are affected by looking at the bottom of each product. Recalled items will have a supplier number of “23348,” “Made in Taiwan” and “PLA” molded on to the bottom.

The TALRIKA and HEROISK product were sold at IKEA stores nationwide and online from Aug. 2019 through May 2021 for $4-$12. If you do have a recalled item, stop using it immediately and return to an IKEA location for a full refund.

IKEA Has a Build-Your-Own Chocolate Bunny, No Wrench Required

Get ready for an afternoon of IKEA assembly fun—no tiny hexagonal wrench needed! The Swedish furniture and home goods retailer has a self-assembly chocolate bunny just in time for Easter.

Like just about everything else at IKEA, the VÅRKÄNSLA milk chocolate bunny is an assembly-required item. While you might not need to spend the afternoon figuring out what that sweet little stick man in the 10-page illustrated instruction manual is doing with wooden pegs, a hammer and a hexagonal wrench, the bunny isn’t a buy and eat treat.

IKEA Announces This Year’s Top Toy Design Winners

IKEA recently announced the winners of the brand’s latest Soft Toy Drawing Competition. Eleven-year-old Nick from St. Louis is the first American since 2017 to win one of the top honors in this creative contest!

The SAGOSKATT collection from Swedish retailer IKEA is a limited-edition collection of soft toys made for kids, by kids. Each year children from around the world are invited to submit their designs, featuring drawings of a would-be imaginatively awesome plush.

This year’s competition brought in more than 66,000 entries—with five chosen as the top winners. Each winner will have their drawing turned into an IRL IKEA toy! One hundred percent of the proceeds from the SAGOSKATT line are donated to local children’s right to play initiatives.

Along with 11-year-old Nick (who won for his “Bird” design), the other global winners were “Sandwich friends” designed by nine-year-old Audrey from Canada, “Cat” designed by eight-year-old Liepa from Lithuania, “Fried egg” designed by seven-year-old Zosia from Poland and “Mermaid dog” designed by nine-year-old Savva from Russia.

Jorge Omar Santoyo Henaine, Product Design Developer for Children’s IKEA, IKEA of Sweden, said in a press release, “I feel very lucky and grateful to be part of the team involved in the SAGOSKATT project. The whole concept of ’for children by children to help children’ is something that makes me extremely proud.”

Santoyo Henaine continued, “The endless creativity in kids is amazing. Each year we are impressed by the amount of unique, cool and fun creations we receive. We wish we could make all of them! When selecting the winners, we consider a lot of important criteria, for instance, how unique, colorful and expressive the drawing is, if it can be transformed into a soft toy for mass production and if we can secure the safety requirements for the future toy.”
