Ready to make your commute to school a bit more exciting? Waze, the popular navigation app, is collaborating with PAW Patrol for a fun new experience that turns each drive into a mission. It even includes navigation instructions from your kid’s favorite pups!

To celebrate release of PAW Patrol: The Movie, you can activate this new feature once you’re signed into Waze. You’ll be able to hear navigation commands from Chase, Marshall, Skye and Ryder. You can update your profile’s “mood”  to match one of the pups on your map. You’ll even be able to change your car’s icon to the show’s iconic police car, fire truck or helicopter!

As you negotiate the usual traffic and stoplights, you might even run into Mayor Humdinger and his pesky kittens. Fortunately, Waze makes it easy to find the fastest route to school (or Target).

The feature is only available for a limited time and you can activate it here. Or simply open the Waze app and click the PAW Patrol banner to get started. Time to make family drives paw-some!

With the world opening back up after a year of masks and lock-downs, we would expect people to be getting back to feeling more like their old selves. But in my practice, I have seen way too many of my clients—especially moms—having a hard time pulling themselves out of the pandemic “funk.” The extra stress and anxiety that we felt during the height of the pandemic just won’t seem to go away, even as we regain some sense of normalcy. 

As a registered dietitian, I have a deep understanding of how our mental health can be impacted by certain lifest‌yle choices. Fortunately, there are some effective tried and true tips that I share to help people feel a bit better during this unchartered stage.

If you are experiencing the post-pandemic “funk” too, here are three things to try that may naturally help boost your mood and help you feel like your best self. Of course, if you are experiencing extreme feelings of despair or anxiety, you should seek professional personalized help and guidance.

1. Focus on a Healthy Diet
The foods you eat can profoundly impact your mental health. Yes, it can be comforting to house a bag of salt and vinegar chips or a carton of ice cream, but in the long run, you won’t be doing your body or your mind any favors. 

Eating to support mental health is about balance, but there are certain nutrients that play an especially important role. Specifically, eating seafood rich in Omega-3 fatty acids has been linked to some amazing outcomes, thanks to the healthy fats that they provide. In fact, people who regularly eat fatty fish are 20% less likely than their peers to have depression. And the American Psychiatric Association has gone as far as endorsing the fats in fish as an effective part of depression treatment.

Plus, taking in enough of these fatty acids found in fish may reduce symptoms of clinical anxiety. Yes, the simple act of enjoying a piece of broiled salmon could quite possibly help you keep your chill. 

Some fish choices that are excellent sources of mood-boosting Omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, sardines, and cod. Farmed salmon is particularly rich in Omega-3 fats. If you’re looking for a sustainable choice that is safe for the entire family, look for farmed salmon from Chile. Other sources of Omega-3 fats include chia and flaxseed, fortified eggs, and walnuts.

2. Socialize (within Your Comfort Zone)
If you are fully vaccinated and comfortable getting together with a friend—then do it! Friendships are important for mental health, especially after a prolonged period of isolation. 

And since studies have shown that people with depressive symptoms are more likely to be isolated in their social networks, which can further increase their symptoms, taking steps to get connected (even virtually) can possibly help you get out of your funk. 

3. Exercise
Getting your body moving isn’t only good for your physical health, regular exercise can also be a great thing to do when supporting your mental health too. 

Exercise has been shown to reduce anxiety, depression, and a negative mood while helping improve self-esteem. Perhaps because exercise can increase your serotonin levels, or your “feel good” hormone, getting your blood flowing and your body moving can give your body the boost that it may need to start feeling a little bit like its old self. 

If you are rolling your eyes at the thought of getting into a cute workout getup and hitting the gym, know that what is considered to be “exercise” doesn’t have to be anything fussy. A brisk 20-minute walk around the block or a dance party in your living room can be just what the doctor ordered.

Getting Back To Your “Old” Self
There is no rule book when it comes to how we should all act now that life is slowly getting back to normal. And if you are finding that you are still feeling a bit down or anxious, these three tips may help you get on the right track and feel a bit better.

And if you are simply not ready to enter the world again, there is no reason to rush yourself. Many of us have experienced loss and hardship over the past months and the feelings you are feeling are very real. And if you are feeling overly anxious or depressed, seeking professional help may be in the cards for you. 

But if you are mentally “ready” but just can’t seem to get it together, taking a closer look at your diet, exercise habits, and socialization practices may be a wise first step.

Showing yourself some self-love can go a long way in strengthening your mental and emotional health and peace of mind. Here are six ways to practice self-love daily:

1. Realize That Self-Care Is Not Selfish
Say it with me: self-care is not selfish. It is you taking care of your basic needs and rights as a human being. It is about doing the little things that bring you joy and promote peace within you. None of us can pour from an empty cup.

2. Forgive Yourself for past Mistakes
Sometimes we carry the weight of our past decisions and actions into our present. While thinking about the past is important to give us clarity and perspective, it’s important not to beat ourselves up. Today is always a chance to do better and to learn from mistakes, not to dwell in regret. Be kind to yourself.

3. Give Yourself Permission to Feel Any Emotion 
Every day we will feel many different emotions. It’s ok to not feel ok, as they say. Allow your negative emotions to pass over and through you without guilt and the need to be “happy” all the time. Realize that feeling any and all of your emotions is a normal part of being human.

4. Limit News & Social Media
While it’s certainly important to know what’s happening in the world, there is such a thing as too much information. We are inundated daily by news reports and everyone else’s opinion about all of it. Try to limit your intake to a reasonable amount per day and maybe even consider taking one day per week to detox completely from media.

5. Declutter Your Space 
Sometimes we let clutter take over without even realizing it. Many times physical clutter can represent mental clutter. When we take the time to declutter our space, it contributes to mental decluttering and a more relaxed atmosphere.

6. Get Out in Nature
Humans are not meant to be cooped up all day. Do yourself a favor and get outside for fresh air even if it means just standing on your front porch. Fresh air, sunshine, and greenery go a long way in perking up your mood!

In-home discos are the new way to celebrate! According to stats from L.O.L. Surprise!, 65 percent of American households are staging impromptu dance parties in their kitchens.

L.O.L. Surprise is celebrating its new Dance Dance Dance toy line with a few fun facts about family dance parties. Along with the number of fams turning their eating areas into makeshift discos, the brand’s survey also found that 42 percent of kiddos think dad’s dances are totally embarrassing—but only 37 percent believe mom’s moves are equally as bad.

Isaac Larian, CEO and Founder of MGA Entertainment, conducted the research as part of the L.O.L. Surprise! Dance Dance Dance toy launch, said in a press release, “Dancing is always something that has brought people together from around the globe.  We love that our toys have inspired our fans, parents and children, to find escape and joy together in kitchen disco parties, and that they have embraced dance as a way to connect no matter what is happening in the world around them.”

When it comes to the time and the tunes, the survey stats show that Saturday at 6:00 pm and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” are the most popular picks. Following Queen’s iconic anthem are Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” and Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

So what’s with all the dance parties? The data shows spending time together and the mood boosting effects of dance may have more than just something to do with the sudden uptick in at-home disco activities. Two-thirds of parents surveyed reported that dancing with their littles lifted their spirits and 82 percent said it always improves their mood. Fifty-five percent of parents also said they use family dance parties to let off some steam.

Immersive Van Gogh, a unique art exhibit that just opened in San Francisco on March 18, is a fanciful and remarkable escape from our world into a land of sunlit countrysides, endless flowers and star-filled nights. The distinctive, often dreamlike paintings of the famous Dutch painter are turned into huge, moving animations for this exhibition, which combine digital projections and music to create a truly immersive experience. It’s an eye-opening introduction into the growing field of immersive art, and is a fun new way for all ages to appreciate Van Gogh’s paintings. Here’s the scoop on what you’ll see when you check out this exhibit.

Massimiliano Siccardi, the creative director of this exhibit, was inspired by Van Gogh’s quote, “I dream my painting and I paint my dream”, and the approximately 40-minute exhibition feels remarkably like stepping into a dream. In the darkness, images taken from Van Gogh’s paintings appear on the walls and floor of the empty space: pastoral landscapes, sunflowers and irises, streets filled with people, and the famous starry night.

The images continually move and morph, so you can see brushstrokes forming an image, the sun moving across a yellow sky, and flowers blooming. One of the most effective sections of the piece makes viewers feel like they are slowly descending down from the night sky past tall towers, onto a busy street lined with cafes lit by candles. At that moment you feel truly immersed in Van Gogh’s vision. The accompanying original score by Luca Longobardi also creates a contemplative, dreamy mood as the exhibition progresses through Van Gogh’s various pieces, roughly tracing his life.

The exhibition takes place in a single large gallery space at SVN West. Once you step inside, you see ceiling projectors projecting images on all four walls, and hear music filling the space—you’re instantly immersed in sights and sounds. Visitors are spaced out in social distancing circles on the floor, and there is an elevated viewing platform in the center. Definitely move around the entire space to experience the exhibit from all angles. Admissions are limited to comply with city capacity guidelines, and temperature checks are required upon arrival. All guests must wear a face covering at all times during their visit.

Ticket prices start at $39.99 ($24.99 for children 16 or younger), with VIP, timed, and flexible ticket options available. The exhibition runs through Monday, September 6, 2021, and tickets are already selling out for the month of March. For kids, this exhibition can provide a new way to view art and understand the creative process.

Very small children may be overwhelmed by the moments of darkness in the exhibition or the loudness of the music, but you can step outside to the adjoining gallery space for a break if needed. More often, older children seem entranced by the images slowly moving across the walls. Afterwards, when you get home you can look up some of Van Gogh’s paintings that were used for this exhibition. They might inspire your kids to create their own artwork or digital art experience: Immersive Van Gogh showcases some of the marvelous ways art may evolve in the future.

As a mom, it can feel daunting. I’ve seen it so many times. That nervous look in a mother’s eye as the family photo session she planned for weeks begins to go off track when her little one melts down.

As a long-time San Diego family photographer, I know it well. It’s usually a mix of frustration and embarrassment. You have a lot of time and money invested in this experience. You carefully planned your family’s outfits, convinced your less than enthusiastic spouse to join, picked the perfect location, and possibly bribed your children. When they start acting up, you might be the one who wants to cry! It definitely doesn’t have to be this way. I’m here to make your family photography experience enjoyable right from the beginning. Here are 5 tips to keep in mind as you prepare for your session.

1. Let Them Be Kids! 
As a mom of six and a family photographer for over 10 years I have seen it all. Super shy kids, hyper kids, kids who literally want nothing to do with my camera. Guess what? I can almost guarantee we will still get images that make your heart skip a beat. There is nothing your child can do that will surprise me. Don’t feel embarrassed for even a second. I’ve been at this a long time. I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to get even the most hesitant child to open up a little. I’ve got you mama! As you prepare for family photos, remember your kids have minds of their own. Especially toddlers. If something I’m doing in a session isn’t working, that’s totally ok! We can switch gears immediately. I keep things very light-hearted and move quickly to keep a young child engaged.

2. Relax.
Kids feed off your mood. Therefore, take a deep breath and relax! I know getting everyone ready is stressful, but try your best to stay as calm as possible. Positive reinforcement works way better than negative consequences. Threats of discipline can send a session spiraling out of control, especially with super little ones with no impulse control. I know it’s frustrating, but I will help you through it. Set yourself up for success by talking about the session ahead of time in a fun manner. Say something like, We’re going to the beach with Tristan today. She loves to chase you around, makes silly faces, and tells silly jokes. She’ll be taking our pictures and maybe she will let you try!” Once a session begins, the best thing you can do to help is to have fun and snuggle up with your kids.

3. Let Me Take the Lead.
You know your child better than anyone else. You know what makes them nervous, laugh, or gets them out of a bad mood. In this instance, you can just sit back and try to relax. As an experienced mom and photographer, I can usually get almost all of my young clients to let loose and have fun. You might feel like you need to stand behind me and tell your kids to smile or “look at the camera. This is not the case when you’re working with a professional family photographer. My job is to capture real emotion and genuine smiles. The goal isn’t to “make” them smile. It’s my job is to get them to capture the natural toothless grins and belly laughs. Your job is to take a breath and soak in the moment. Parents rarely have the opportunity to simply relax and stare at their incredible little people. This is that moment. Enjoy every second of it!

Sometimes it’s helpful to show them a picture of the photographer in advance when talking about the upcoming session. Check out their Instagram profile or website about section. This will help them see we are a friend. A quick zoom call or video text introducing myself helps my clients as well! That can definitely help make timid kids feel a little more connected from the start.

4. Plan in Advance.
By far, the easiest way to prepare for a family photography session is to give yourself plenty of time to get ready. You want to eat before your session and have a snack and/or water for your kids on location. In addition, make sure your children are rested and pack everything you need well in advance. Give your outfits a test run in the days prior to your session. If something feels uncomfortable, choose something else. Stress increases when you feel rushed. This can result in a cranky family. Give yourself extra time to get dressed, load the car, and drive to the session. The goal is to minimize any crazy, rushed feelings. They will totally feed off of you. If you are as cool as a cucumber, it will make things even smoother for them.

5. Get your Partner on Board.
It was mentioned earlier that your mood can set the tone for the session. Your partner’s mood matters too. Kids will notice if their parents aren’t excited about the session. I know most people don’t exactly jump for joy at the prospect of having their photo taken. So, talk with your spouse and ask them to put their game face on. My sessions are all about capturing genuine emotion, authentic connection, and real smiles. My job is to capture the real you. Get ready to play, laugh, relax. Just be yourself!

Even if I am not your photographer, these tips would set you out on the right foot to create some amazing memories. If all else fails, pour yourself a nice glass of wine later!

If Snapchat filters, Instagram followers, boomerang pics, the perfect photo, tweets, and Facebook ‘likes’ seem to consume your teen’s life, it is no surprise. Social media use is currently the most common activity enjoyed by children and teenagers. Over 75 percent of children own a cellular phone, and the majority use it to access social media platforms several times each day. With such a broad reach and widespread popularity among our youth, it’s important that parents understand that while mostly fun and games there can be negative consequences of excessive social media use. 

Does the following sound familiar?

Lately you’ve noticed that your child appears aloof, irritable, and withdrawn. He prefers to be left alone in his room spending time on Instagram and Snapchat. Though he is restricted from screen time after bedtime, he has had several nights of breaking this rule and staying up late to check his social media feeds. As his parent, you’ve established rules regarding social media use including having access to his social media platforms usernames and passwords. You’ve come to learn, that he has a fake Instagram (i.e. a “Finstagram”) account and has experienced bullying due to some recent posts.  

Or this?

Your teen has been unusually irritable. She’s having trouble sleeping and is spending more time alone. She’d rather sit in her room and swipe and post on her social media feeds than spend time with her family or even go out with friends. She appears overly concerned with her physical appearance and getting the “perfect look” for pictures. Once cheerful and self-assured, she has lately become self-doubting and withdrawn.

At first glance, we might think that behaviors and mood symptoms such as these can be chalked up to a teenage funk or a child hitting a rough patch. Another possible cause? Social media depression. Social media depression refers to a clinical depression that results from the intensity, pressure, and eventual isolation stemming from social media use. And unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly common among kids and teens.

Social media depression is not recognized as a formal diagnosis among health care professionals. Yet, there is a growing body of research that shows an association between social media use and clinical depression, especially among youth and young adults—thus the term “social media depression.”

How do you know if your youth is struggling with a clinical depression and this is more than a moody teenager? If you notice that your child has several of the following symptoms over a two week period or more, then you should be concerned about clinical depression: depressed mood (most of the day and nearly every day), changes in sleep pattern (sleeping too much or too little), loss of energy nearly every day, poor concentration, an inability to experience pleasure in activities that your child previously enjoyed, increased time alone and reduced time with friends, or even talk of death or suicide. 

Social media may be an underlying cause if your youth has an excessive amount of interest and time spent on YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and Facebook. Take heed if you notice the following behaviors and telling signs: spending considerable amounts of time on social media at the expense of real friendships and family time, a hyper-focus on physical appearance because of a posting the “perfect” picture, and excessive comparisons of themselves to friends.

If you suspect that your child is suffering from clinical depression, that’s your cue to take the next step. Get professional help—the sooner, the better.  We’ve seen that early intervention can make a great difference.
