If you’re a fan of salty and sweet flavor combinations, then Starbucks Santa Boots Chocolate Frappuccino is a holiday wish come true.

The new Frappuccino flavor features a chocolatey base topped with whipped cream, candy-coated chocolates and crushed potato chips. Oh, and did we mention the edible cookie straw? The only downside to this unique flavor combo is that you probably won’t be able to get a taste––unless you happen to live in Japan.

The Santa Boots Chocolate Frappuccino is only available at Starbucks locations in Japan through Dec. 25 or until supplies are sold out. You can always get creative and sprinkle some potato chips on top of a good, old fashioned Peppermint Mocha!

An LA native (yep, they exist), Shannan grew up on the westside back when there was still a drive-in movie theater in Culver City and the go-to spot for birthday parties was Shakeys Pizza Parlor. That was all a very long time ago and since then, Shannan received a BA from UCLA; moved to NYC; worked as an editor at Self magazine; wrote for GlamourCosmopolitanNylon and other publications; got an MFA from NYU; wrote a book of short stories (about living in LA) and a children’s book; and then finally, inevitably moved back to the city of angels, or home as she calls it. Now the mother of a three-year-old boy, she’s rediscovering some her favorite childhood haunts (hello, Randy’s Donuts) plus oh-so many new ones.

Favorite place to play outdoors: Our go-to spot is the “rocket ship park,” as my son calls it. It’s officially Rocket’s Universe at North Weddington Parkin North Hollywood, CA. The playground has a whole space theme, with a moon and rockets to climb on, planets to learn about and a flying saucer to swing on.

Favorite thing to do on a rainy day: If it’s a weekend, we’ll head to Noah’s Ark at Skirball. During the week, we rely on Rockin’ Kids, an indoor play space in Burbank. Parking is easy and covered (a bonus when it’s raining or blazing hot), and my son usually exhausts himself in the bounce house, which hopefully makes bedtime easier for mom.

Favorite farmer’s market: Studio City on Sundays—it’s inflatables heaven. There are usually five different jumbo slides and slide-bounce-house combos. They’re strategically placed next to the Hawaiian ice stand, which is our second stop—mostly because it’s the only thing that will get my son off the inflatables.

Can’t-live-without mom product: Hand sanitizer!

Favorite day trip from LA: The Santa Barbara Zoo—it’s relatively small, but there’s still plenty to see, including giraffes, elephants and the massive California condors. Other perks: It’s rarely too crowded or too hot (it’s right by the beach, after all) and there’s an old-fashioned train that takes you around the entire zoo.

Cocktails at the push of a button? Um, sign us up. K-Cups for cocktails are an actual thing, making us all mixologist moms.

Drinkworks by Keurig works just like the coffee pod drink maker you already know and love—but, of course, the major difference is that instead of making caffeinated goodness, these machines brew up batches of your fave cocktails!

So how exactly does the Drinkworks drinkmaker work? Let’s say you’re not exactly Tom Cruise in Cocktail when it comes to making mixed drinks. Just pop one of the Keurig pods into the machine, add water and that’s it! The pods include the alcohol and the ingredients while the machine carbonates and chills your mixed drink of choice.

Make the most of this mixologist-like gadget. Drinkworks also comes with a an app, providing you with info on unboxing and setting up your machine, ordering pods, making drinks and monitoring the drinkmaker’s cleaning status.

The current menu of Drinkworks pods includes Cosmopolitan, Daiquiri, Gin and Tonic, Lime Vodka Soda, Margarita, Strawberry Margarita, Mojito, Moscow Mule, Old Fashioned, Red Sangria, White Russian, White Wine Peach Sangria and Mai Tai. Rosé? Yes Way—& Soon You Can Buy Rosé Wine at Target

Encouraging your kids to fuel up and drink plenty of liquids when they are sick isn’t always easy, so it can help to stock up on some sick day staples to choose from when they’re not up for their usual favorites. These are the best foods for when you have a cold and just don’t feel like eating.

“When you have a cold, your body’s immune system releases chemicals that may make you tired and not feel like eating,” Amy Gorin, MS, RDN, owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition told Elite Daily. She added, “eating certain foods that are hydrating and full of immune-helping vitamins and minerals may help make you feel better.”

photo: Stephanie Harvey via Unsplash

When it comes to busting colds, nothing beats good old fashioned chicken soup. Besides the nutritional benefits, according to experts, chicken soup also acts as a sore throat soother and a decongestant, not to mention that soup can help with hydration. It’s a winning combo all around!

The other big winner to offer kids who are reluctant to eat are smoothies. Obviously as a liquid, smoothies are hydrating, but because they’re so easy to customize, they offer the perfect way to sneak in some needed nutrients as well. Vitamin C in the form of fruits, like mangoes, papaya and berries can help boost immunity. Yogurt is another easy addition that can boost the immune system as a natural probiotic.

Like we needed any more excuses to shop at Target, but now that quick trip “for just a few items” is easier than ever thanks to Apple Pay at Target—finally!

While Apple Pay was already accepted as payment on Target’s website, it was not an option in store—until now. Apple Pay has reportedly been under testing at certain Target locations since late last year, but now it will rolling out as a checkout option at all 1,850 Target locations nationwide.

Android users aren’t left in the dark, however, the retailer will also be supporting Google Pay and Samsung Pay at all locations as well. “Offering guests more ways to conveniently and quickly pay is just another way we’re making it easier than ever to shop Target,” said Mike McNamara, Target’s chief information officer said in a blog post.

The only downside is Target’s REDCard will not be added to Apple Pay, which means customers that wish to pay with one will still have to do things the old fashioned way.

Remember back in the day when you logged on to your Amazon account and bought books—and only books? It looks like the mega online retailer is getting back to its roots. (Kind of.) Amazon’s subscription box for kids, Prime Book Box, is launching—and all parents need to know about it.

Oh, and it’s all about those good old-fashioned paper and print reads. Yay! Amazon’s newest subscription service will bring your kiddos actual books. Not downloadable, read on your smartphone books, but instead the IRL versions you can line your little bookworm’s bookshelves with.

Photo: Matthew Hauck via Flickr

So how does Prime Book Box work? To start with, and as the name implies, you need to be an Amazon Prime member. After you’ve got that taken care of, you need to request an invitation—as of now, this service is by invite-only.

When you get your invite, you pick a time-frame. Currently, Amazon offers 1-, 2- or 3-month delivery services. Each box will include two hardcover or four board books, depending on your child’s age. And if you’re wondering how Amazon will know your kiddo’s age, they won’t. You can select for babies and up to age 2, as well as kids aged 3-5 years, 6-8 years or 9-12 years.

Amazon curates Prime Book Box, picking must-have reads for your child. Along with getting a rad reading surprise every month, two months or three months, the book boxes will save you up to 35 percent-off list price, at just only $22.99 per box. Score!

Choosing a name for your baby is one of the most special parts of parenthood—and one of those most daunting. For starters, you are naming a human being. For life. You want something unique, but not too unique, a name that will suit baby from infancy through childhood, adolescence and adulthood. The pressure is on, but there are surefire ways to rock this baby-naming business. Read on for our best tips.

photo: Laura Logan Photography

Look to Family Ties
Begin your search by considering your own family tree. Choosing a family name has a number of benefits, from carrying on a legacy and honoring a loved one to imparting extra special significance to your little one’s name right from the start. Just be ready to navigate a common pitfall: Naming baby after a family member can create mixed feelings among others in the family. Tread lightly and use compassion, but remember, in the end, it’s your baby, your choice.

photo: Marty Haddig via Flickr

Seek Inspiration
If finding the perfect name seems overwhelming, think of it like a treasure hunt instead. It’s an adventure, and the treasure could be anywhere! Try a quick Google search or browse a naming website like Nameberry. Or, thumb through your favorite book, look up historical figures, or consider personally significant people or places. One mom we know stalked the TV credits of her favorite shows. Another browsed the keychains at Walt Disney World.

Create Criteria
Because you’ll be attuned to every name you hear, establishing a list of moniker must-haves will keep your list from getting too lengthy. Do you want a name that has a specific meaning, like “peace” or “strength”? Only want a name that starts with the letter J? A name with three syllables? Use your criteria both to find potential names and weed out others.

photo: Christy Lynne Photography

Consider the Classics
A safe way to avoid trends and reach baby-naming success is to look to the top 100 list put out by the Social Security Administration. The names include the 100 most-popular names for boys and girls every year in the past 100 years and include classics like James, David and William for boys and Elizabeth, Emily and Grace for girls.

Play Favorites
Once you and your partner have settled on potential names, ask yourself if you both absolutely adore each name. Not just like the name, but love the name. Once you have a set of faves, continue to narrow down the list the old-fashioned way: Write them down. (Or go high-tech and create an Excel spreadsheet.) Next, look up the meanings, say them each out loud (a name that sounds great on paper may not be as appealing when spoken), check out the initials and monogram, and try the first and middle names together to see how they sound.

photo: Quinn Dombrowski via Flickr

Talk It Out
In a perfect world, your child’s name would appear in the stars, and both parents-to-be would immediately agree it was The One. If only. Baby naming can be a hot topic between parents-to-be that can leave both parties feeling a little tense. Set ground rules at the start:

1) Be kind and open-minded.

2) Don’t belittle a partner’s choice.

3) Rules out names with any negative connotation for either partner (we’re looking at you, exes and 7th grade gym teachers!).

4) Enjoy the process!

Once you’ve agreed to the rules, create a list of favorites separately, and then compare. Don’t love any of the same ones? Compromise by having one choose the first name and the other choose the middle name. (Then, switch that order if there is ever a baby #2.) Or, choose baby’s name the very easiest way of allby downloading an app! Babyname is the Tinder of the baby world. You both swipe right on names you like, left on names you don’t. When you have a match, it alerts you.

Celebrate
Breathe a sigh of relief and celebrate. You just named a human.

What do you think if the best way to choose a baby name? Share your advice below!

You may have heard there’s a new axe-throwing joint in town. So did we. And they told us kids as young as seven can try their hand at it. That’s a proposition that’s too hard to resist, so we wrangled up some kids to check out the appropriately-named, Kick Axe.

Get Your Axe in There!
Located on what is clearly becoming an “xtreme sports” alley of sorts in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn (the block is also home to Homage skateboard shop and facility, Brooklyn Boulders, Brooklyn Fnecing, and a cross fit gym) Kick Axe obviously fits right in.

photo: Kick Axe

Come in From the Cold and Chill
We were admittedly slightly terrified of the prospect of throwing axes around, but the giant blue bull that greets visitors outside, and a downright cozy interior with a ski chalet vibe make us feel right at home.

In addition to  a gas fireplace, lots of plaid and furry throws, Kick Axe provides plenty of opportunities for good old fashioned fun in the form of games ranging from Jenga to Connect Four to vintage Operation and more.

photo: Kick Axe

The Ranges
Beyond the cozy lounging areas lie the axe-throwing ranges, roomy, “pens” fenced off on three sides with a wood target on the wall, a la darts.

Safety First!
Of course, the first thing you do upon entering is sign a waiver, because axes. You can do that in advance if you like.
Our party included five adults, an 11 year-old, a seven year-old, and an eight-and-a-half year old.

Kick Axe knows that most people visitng the place think the idea is at least a little bit crazy, and so each party has its own “Axepert” on hand to not only set some ground rules, teach the basics of axe-throwing, and calm and nerves.

Before you begin, everyone gets some one-on-one instruction and some trial throws.

Throwing Down
The basic game itself, is pretty standard. (Presumably there are more intricate axe games, but we weren’t ready for that.) Your group (maximum players per range is eight) is assembled into two teams, who then face off in pairs at the range, with only one person throwing at a time. Everyone puts on a name tag with their real or axe-throwing moniker.

Each ring on the target has a point value, and the bullseye is of course the ideal spot to hit. We played ’til 30 in one round, and then played one more. The total time for play is an hour and a half.

Is it Hard? Is it Fun?
It turns out that axe-throwing is not as hard as you would think, although it can take a while to get the hang of it. That said, when axe meets wood it’s very satisfying, and once you’ve done that, you want to do it again. By the time we were done, even the seven-year-old with us was sinking the blade in and hitting the bull’s eye.

(Kids can also stand closer to the target for increased chances of success, and for really little ones, the lounge now has rubber axes for kids to throw, scoring based on where they hit the target and bounce off. One-handed throwing is also allowed, which can make things easier.)

How Much Does it Cost to Do This Crazy Thing?
If you and the family want to drop by for some axe-throwing fun, it’s $35 per person plus tax. Book online in advance. if you want a private range, request one, but you may end up playing with strangers depending on how busy things are. (Either way you’ll have fun.)

Sound like a great idea for a party? (Personally, we want to see a badass group of eight-year-old girls do this.) Semi-private party rates start at $525 for two ranges and 24 people. That’s the discount rate offered Mon.-Thurs.; it’s $700 Fri.-Sun.

Kick Axe has basic drinks for sale (soda, water, seltzer, and yes, they do sell beer but eject anyone who’s had too much) and very basic food. However, you’re free to bring in pizza and cake (no ice cream cake) or whatever your little axe-throwers desire.
