This year’s scorching summer has ripened fruit quickly, and that means fall is set to bring bushels of bounty. The orchards around Portland are flowing with all varieties of apples, pears, peaches, and more, and we know you’re ready to pick with the kids. We’ve rounded up the best farms around, and they’re all gorgeous enough to sneak in those beloved fall family photos. How can you resist?
Not up for a drive? Here’s where to go apple picking near Portland
This sweet Beaverton farm boasts a bright red barn that welcomes families daily—they even have evening picking for these gorgeous warm summer nights. Gravenstein apples are now available for U-pick at $2.50 per pound, as well as Bartlett pears for $1.50 a pound. The short-style orchard means that everyone can pick without ladders. Fill your buckets with varieties of apples, pears, and juicy peaches—your only problem might be stopping before you have enough for 50 pies.
In the rolling hills past Newberg, the 1,300 trees of this orchard produce pears, apples, plums, quince, and even persimmons. U-pick is available over the 26 acres with more than 70 varieties of apples ranging from tart cooking apples to sweet ones—check the website or Facebook for updates on availability. Please bring your own boxes and bags to both pick and bring your fruit home in, and make sure you wear sturdy shoes (not sandals or flip flops) because the grounds are uneven. Get your camera ready, because this spot offers the perfect opportunity for those back-to-school or holiday themed photos.
Family-owned and operated in Parkdale, this orchard produces apples your family won’t be able to resist, and did we mention it’s the largest in the Hood River Valley? No wonder it’s been a standing favorite for Portland families looking to get their fresh fruit fix for years. As it happens with Mother Nature, the usual apple picking schedule is a bit off this year. Currently, they’re running about two to three weeks behind, but have plans to open in early September. Rest assured that when the apples are ripe, families will be filling their baskets with any number of the nearly 150 different varieties of fruits they offer during the harvest season. That’s right, you can also score some sweet pears when you pick here. Be sure to keep an eye on their website or social media accounts to find out when the time is ripe to head over.
Three generations in and this 50-acre orchard near Portland is still producing stellar fruit that goes above and beyond apples. August and September see peaches, plums, pears, apples, nectarines, late blueberries, and even dahlias, corn, carrots, and beets. Make it whole day with a hayride later in the season, topped off with fresh cider and donuts. And the adults in the group should check out their special hard cider on tap or in bottles to take home. They are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and pups are happily allowed on a leash.
Near Salem, Beilke Family Farm boasts up to 15 varieties of irresistible apples like Ruby Mac, Cripps Pink, and Gold Rush available for picking between late August and mid-November. Four generations have worked these trees, and the care shines through in well-organized rows that are easy to navigate so you can find your favorite fruit. The dwarf trees make it a cinch for kids to pick and fill their buckets. Please bring your own buckets or boxes to take home your picked apples; the farm’s five gallon plastic buckets are only for use in the orchard. Opening times are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Bask in the shadow of Mt. Hood at this scenic farm that offers organic U-pick apples around the middle of September. Relaxing is the farm vibe here, and kids will love interacting with the many animals that roam the farm. We’re talking chickens, pigs, and even alpacas. Enjoy a picnic under the shade of the farm trees, or let the kids roam when they’ve had their fill of pickin’.
Even on a rainy or overcast day, you can head to this Hood River Valley farm to go apple picking in the fall. After you check in and grab a bucket for picking, it’s as easy as finding ripe fruit within reach. You’ll find apples and maybe some peaches, depending on how late in the apple-picking season you head over. Charming goats may be there to greet your kids, and they’ll love swinging on the tree swing when they’re done. Apples are priced based on weight, and they keep for a long time, so have a few recipe ideas on hand for the coming weeks.
Head to Hillsboro, just a short drive from Portland, where this charming farm offers the most delicious fresh produce. Since 1900, the Washington State Fair has been entertaining families and has grown from a three-day event to one that lasts for three weeks. Over the years it has grown to a monstrous size making it one of the 10 largest fairs in the U.S. If you’re not prepared, a simple day at the fair can be overwhelming for the average family. How to Save on Tickets:
You’ll save the most money and time on tickets if you buy them online. Early bird pricing is good now through Aug. 25. These tickets are good for any day of the week: $14 for adults, $12 for children and seniors (62 & up). Kids aged 5 and younger are always free.
If you plan to visit the fair for multiple times this year, consider buying a Season Pass for $59.50. Each pass is good for one admission by the same guest each day of the fair’s run.

Every year the fair offers a few days where you and your crew can get in for free - or almost anyway.
Sept. 1: Arrive between 10:30am - 12:30pm with a suggested non-perishable food donation for the Puyallup Food Bank for free admission. Even if you get to the gates after 12:30 p.m., you’ll still save as all kids ages 18 and under get in free all day!
Sept. 8: Arrive between 10:30 and 12:30 p.m. with a suggested new school supply donation for free admission.
Military Mondays: The fair offers free admission for active, reserve, and retired military and National Guard and their dependents, plus disabled veterans, when each shows valid military ID at any fair gate every Monday.
Park Like a Champ
While you’ll see plenty of the neighbors offering to let you park on their lawn, opt to park on one of the fairgrounds parking lots to save a few steps. Parking is $15 Mon.-Fri. and $20 Sat. & Sun.
Tip: You can save three bucks on parking Mon. through Thur. when you purchase a parking pass at a participating O’Reilly Auto Parts store.
You can also opt to reserve your parking spot ahead of time for a hassle-free start to your day. Premium Parking ($35) guarantees you a spot in a parking lot closer to the gate. Feeling extra special? Go for the VIP Parking across from the Gold Gate for $50. (Must be reserved for a specific date in advance online.)
Alternatively, you can even take an Uber or Lyft to the fair. The Drop Off and Pick Up spot is located on the North side of the fairgrounds.
Ride on the Wild Side

If you are already planning on shelling out some extra dough for the amusement park rides, the fair offers a variety of inventive ways to help you save a few bucks. As with admission tickets, it is also a good idea to purchase ride tickets ahead of time instead of waiting in line during your visit. Keep in mind that all of the rides require multiple tickets. Nine to 14 tickets per ride is the average. You can get 40 tickets for $24 or 120 tickets for $60.
Tip: To save a few bucks on tickets, take advantage of these offers:
Ride & Admission Bundle: The bundle includes two fair admissions (good for any day) and six rides for $41.95. The bundle is only offered online through Aug. 25, 2023 and it does not include rides on the Extreme Scream, Classic Coaster and Wild Cat.
Xfinity Dizzy Pass: Good for unlimited rides (except the Extreme Scream and Adventure Zone rides). It also Includes two free games. Dizzy Passes are valid for one-day use only and DO NOT include Fair gate admission. The passes are offered as follows:
Select Weekend Days: Sept. 4, 9, 10, 2023. The pass is $60 online or $65 at the gate.
Select Weekdays: Sept. 7, 8, 11, 13, 14, 15, 18, 20, 21, 22, 2023. This pass is available for $45 if purchased before Aug. 25 or $55 at the gate.
Make a Plan
Washington State Fair
The fairgrounds are HUGE, so it’s best to make a plan before you arrive so that you aren’t backtracking and missing out on a lot of stuff. First, visit the fair’s website (after you’re done reading this of course!) to find more information on which shows are performing on the day that you’re there. Make a list of the ones you think your family will enjoy.
After you have a list, download the Fair’s Mobile App to navigate the Fair with ease. You can even create a favorites list of activities, entertainment stages, rides, food to make sure you don't miss a thing. Plan your day around the shows that you want to see. For instance, you can see the baby animals at any time during the day, but a special children’s show may only be offered a couple times a day.
Plan to arrive at the fairgrounds early as well to avoid crowds. If your family has been wanting to ride that big ‘ol Classic Coaster, put that on the top of your list. The more you can experience early, the more you’ll see overall. Don’t stop at the commercial booths. You’ll have plenty of time to see what’s inside there later on in the day.
Must-See Activities
Washington State Fair
Here are some suggestions on things and shows that you do not want your family to miss out on:
Experience the Scone: People not raised in the PNW have a hard time wrapping their head around the classic Fisher Scone. These fluffy, raspberry jam-filled biscuits are truly a favorite of many. While scones are offered in numerous places around the fairgrounds, take your family to the original spot under the grandstands. They’ll be able to see the large Ferris wheel oven that bakes them perfectly.
Survival: The Exhibition: This new exhibit is an add-on and rumor has it, it’s pretty good. The fair explains it this way: “Adventure, fun, and science collide at this exhilarating, heart-pumping and daring journey of bravery and brains. Experience the thrill of exploration, gain an appreciation for the wonders of nature, and prepare for the unexpected—all within an interactive, informative, and safe space.” Tickets are $9 for those age 3 and over or $30 for a family of 4.
The Farm at SillyVille: This is one of the best (and free!) exhibits in the fairgrounds for its education and interactive elements. It tells of Washington’s food and farming story and gives kids a better idea of what farmers do, the food that we eat, and making healthy eating choices. There’s a lot of photo opps here too.
Tractor Tracks: Although not a “ride”, your kids will think it is. Little farmers can cruise around a picturesque track on a pedal tractor that travels by a river and a tiny town. It’s free too!
Fair Farm: No trip to the fair can be complete without a visit to the petting farm and “Piglet Palace.” Here you’ll find bunnies, goats, llamas and even chicks.
Grange Displays: The Agriculture & Horticulture Displays present larger-than-life murals created using fruits and vegetables. It’s pretty cool for everyone.
Get Lost in a Free Show

Not only does the Washington State Fair offer some of the best concerts (more on those below), it also offers a variety of free entertainment that is worth a stop:
Outpost 47: This family-friendly beer garden features live music all day long. Most are tribute shows featuring the music of Taylor Swift, Billy Idol, George Michael, Bob Seger, Aerosmith and more.
Extreme Dogs: These high-flying, extreme sport, wickedly talented and athletic animals are amazing. The show features world champion trainers and the highest level of performing dogs.
Professor Smart’s Science Show: A quirky and entertaining show with interactive science lessons.
Chicago Honey Bear Dancers: This high-energy song and dance show features a surprise singer from American Idol performing fan favorites from the 1950s to today's hits. It promises a show full of singing, dancing and audience participation. They boast that it's “phenomenal entertainment for the entire family!”
Molly’s Choose Your Own Adventure – The Musical: Another interactive show allows the audience to get involved in the story-making. You choose the adventure and help Molly find the missing script. Should she return to the circus or visit a tropical island? You decide with the use of the interactive applause-o-meter!
Roberto the Magnificent: Roberto has captivated audiences for more than two decades. Each of his performances are filled with comedic chatter, breathtaking visual stunts and … you guessed it… lots of audience participation.
Master Hypnotist Tina Marie: We’re intrigued by this one. Tina Marie is a comical hypnotist. Through post-hypnotic suggestions, she commands the winner of a million dollar lottery to jump up out of their seat screaming "I won, I won!" or tells another to make an impression of Richard Simmons conducting a group exercise class.
The Jungle Book: As part of their 10th season of bringing outstanding programming to tour in the US, The Panto Company USA brings this cherished story to life on stage with a musical production.

The Puyallup Rodeo
Washington State Fair
The Puyallup Rodeo is part of the fair and runs from Sept. 7-10. One of the biggest events is also free. The Western Rodeo Parade & Cattle Drive takes place outside of the fairgrounds on Sept. 8, 2023. The cattle drive starts at 10:00am and travels down Meridian Street in downtown Puyallup. This year's Grand Marshal is KOMO News Anchor, Eric Johnson.
Meanwhile, back in the fairgrounds, the CINCH Playoffs features the top 24 contestants from the Playoff Series competing with the top four from Puyallup and the top eight out of the standings of the Playoff Series. The winners will advance to the Governor’s Cup in Sioux Falls South Dakota. Reserved seating for the rodeo events run $35-$45 and INCLUDES same-day fair admission. (Online orders subject to standard fees. All tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable, regardless of weather. Events held rain or shine.) Imagine your kids saying, "Why yes, this IS my first rodeo."
About Sillyville and Thrillville
Washington State Fair
The amusement rides are broken up into two sections – Sillyville for the little guys and Thrillville for everyone else. Sillyville encompasses five acres of a park-like setting featuring a vintage train and station and a classic town square. It’s a little less chaotic providing for a environment that is more comfortable for a lot of kids. For families with kids who are a little braver, head on over to Thrillville where you’ll find an antique carousel, the Extreme Scream, the Grand Wheel (super large Ferris wheel), bumper cars and more.
A lot of families wait until late in the day to ride the rides, but if you do, you’ll also be waiting in longer lines as well.

Held at Genesee Park, Seafair has been a Seattle tradition since 1951, and for many families, it’s one of the “can’t-miss” events of the summer. While adults are impressed with what the high-flying acrobats can do in the sky, kids are flat-out amazed. But the event isn’t just about what’s happening in the sky. It’s a special time when hydroplanes and classic cars are celebrated too. Of course, the show’s biggest stars are the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. They have performed at Seafair for over 40 years! Boeing Seafair Air Show
The Boeing Seafair Air Show runs Friday, August 4 through Sunday, August 6, 2023, and it’s where you can catch the amazing flying aerobatics of the best of the best pilots. This year’s lineup includes US Navy Blue Angels (including Fat Albert C-130), the US Navy EA-18G Growlers (from Naval Air Station Whidbey), B-17 “Sentimental Journey”, B-25 “Made in the Shade”, US Army’s Golden Knights, US Army Helicopters, PBY-5A Catalina Seaplane, and US Coast Guard MH65 Search and Rescue.
The air show also includes displays by civilian pilots, vintage aircraft, and parachute demonstrations. It is said that Brad Wursten will be pushing the envelope of one of the most advanced aircraft in the world during his “Power Addiction Air Show” all three days.
As with past years, the Blue Angels have a flight plan for practices over Lake Washington so the I-90 Bridge and Seward Park will remain open.
Seafair
HomeStreet Bank Cup
The HomeStreet Bank Cup is a H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Boat Race where the hydroplanes up to 220 MPH! Not only is this race an integral part of Seafair, but it’s also the third oldest H1 unlimited race site. This year they are celebrating 70 years with Seafair.
Seafair Classic Car Show
Up to 100 classic vehicles will be on display on the shores of Lake Washington for the Seafair Classic Car Show on Sat. and Sun. Come see vintage antique cars from the 1920s and 1930s, modified classic cars, custom classic cars, and classic foreign cars along Thunder Alley.
Museum of Flight Jet Blast Bash
The Museum of Flight’s Annual Jet Blast Bash is a two-day event that offers families the closest views of the Blue Angel show as the planes park and take off from the Museum. Held on Aug. 5 and 6, 2023 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., the Museum of Flight will be chock-full of outdoor family activities, plane displays, live music, food, and even a beer garden for moms, dads, and other caregivers. All activities are free with Museum admission. There will be some free parking onsite, but it will be limited so they recommend taking public transit.

What to Bring
Be sure to lather on the sunscreen and bring lots of water and some extra cash as many of the beaches will have tasty treats to purchase. Your wingmen will enjoy the show best if you gear them up with some ear protection, especially if they can sport some cool earmuffs like the ones the pilots wear.
The Best Way to Get There
Genesee Park on Lake Washington will be your best bet for a front-row seat for both the air show and hydroplane extravaganza. However, getting there by car is no picnic, and finding parking will be that much harder. There is some general parking available for $50 (which you can purchase ahead of time) and limited paid ADA parking. Instead, we suggest you take advantage of buses and link light rail for your transportation needs. In any case, here are your options:
Sound Transit Link Light Rail
Get free round-trip shuttle service from Columbia Center Station from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sound Transit schedules and rates can be found online.
Metro Transit Buses Metro Bus Route 50 will be operating a standard schedule with stops at Genesee Park & Columbia City Station. This route will operate every 15 minutes from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Seafair Saturday and Sunday. Military members and their families will receive free rides by showing military ID.
ADA Parking
Limited paid ADA event parking will be available on-site on a first-come, first-served basis. A state-issued, accessible placard is required for access.
Genesee Park on Lake Washington is the official location and will be your best bet for a front-row seat to the Air Show extravaganza, hydroplane hoopla, and a lot more. The park is located at 4316 South Genesee Street.

Mount Baker Park Located just two miles away from the Seafair epicenter, this beach park is the perfect spot to picnic while you watch in awe as the team displays the amazing agility and speed of the F/A-18 Hornet, performing a flurry of stunts that loop, roll, and turn through the sky. The small, well-groomed space has plenty of entertainment to keep those jet-heads busy while you wait for the show, including a life-guarded beach complete with a roped-off kiddie area, a cozy grass lawn perfect for a picnic, plus a small playground with a sturdy zip-line for small fries to attempt their own daredevil maneuvers on.
Insider Tip: Be sure to arrive early to beat the crowds and spend some time exploring the park before the show. Parking is limited, so consider using public transportation or venturing the neighborhoods on the hill above the lake.
Colman Park Located adjacent to Mount Baker Park, this lush, grassy waterfront area offers an amazing view of Lake Washington and a stellar place to picnic with the crew while you do some plane-watching. Spend some time wandering the walking trails, community garden and score some ice cream before the show.

Pritchard Island Beach Tucked quietly away in the Rainier Beach area of Lake Washington is a little grassy beach that boasts of panoramic views of Seward Park and Mercer Island. Here kids can splash around in the water, cannonball from the low or high diving boards and enjoy the show away from the noise and glitz of the big festivities.

Aubrey Davis Park – Mercer Island Formerly called Park on the Lid, this huge green space, located just off of the I-90 bridge, offers an abundance of room to watch a stellar show with spectacular views of Lake Washington, the Olympics, and Seattle’s skyline as the backdrop. The park also offers two softball fields, two playgrounds, and trails throughout the park, giving everyone plenty of room to run around, throw a Frisbee, or park for a bite to eat.

Groveland Beach Park Beach – Mercer Island This hidden gem is located in a residential neighborhood on the west shore of Mercer Island and offers a guarded, sandy beach and playground to hang with your flight crew during the show. Keep in mind that you will have to walk down a steep, paved path to get to the beach. Although not a direct vantage point for the demonstration, this area does offer a less crowded alternative for plane gazing.

Chism Beach Park It will be planes galore at this scenic Bellevue neighborhood park with its lakefront sandy beach, and sloping grass lawn, and the perfect place for your crew to convene for an afternoon airshow. With its play structure built right on the beach, tots can easily maneuver from water play to playground, to sand digging without missing a moment of all the high-flying action.

Take advantage of the quarter-mile of Lake Washington waterfront, beautiful swimming beach and swimming platform, plus a 400-foot-long curved pedestrian pier that extends into the lake, a hand-carry boat launch, paved walkways, picnic areas, and a fantastic playground. The park also features a hilltop overlook with gorgeous views of Seattle, a new beach house with restrooms, changing rooms, and boat rentals (think: canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards), as well as a lifeguard station.

While we didn’t have first day of school signs back in our day, we’re surprised it took us so long to figure out how great they are. Dealing with temper tantrums doesn’t have to be a guessing game
Laura Lynn LaPointe had us all breathing a sigh of relief. “What I want you to hear is that all children have tantrums. Your child is not going to get out of having tantrums.” Thank. Goodness. It’s so easy to feel completely alone, like our kids are the only ones who have meltdowns. And it’s also really easy to feel like it’s our fault. But, according to BabySparks Parent Coach and Child Behavior Consultant Laura Lynn LaPointe, it’s all normal, and temper tantrums are actually expected of our little ones.

“Know that a tantrum is just a behavior. It’s just something your child is doing. So let’s stop putting so much weight on it and so much personal meaning on it. It’s just another thing your child does and we can help with that.” That’s right. Don't even think about trying to head here without a reservation. (We stopped by one weekend afternoon and the wait was about two hours.) But clearly, Sunday in Brooklyn—not too far from the brand new Domino Park—is doing something right. In addition to elevated breakfast and lunch foods, the restaurant serves its famous malted pancakes with hazelnut maple praline, and brown butter. They're rich, an unexpected but delicious taste sensation, and super fluffy.
For a Gluten-Free Pancake in Times Square: Friedman's at The Edison
You heard us right. Friedman's at The Edison Hotel will prepare its celebrated pancakes gluten-free. (In fact, they can do the same for 99 percent of their menu, and they even mark them with a little sign saying so!) Choose from blueberry, lemon ricotta, or buckwheat banana walnut. Good to know: Friedman's serves breakfast all day, and has also mastered kid faves like mac and cheese.
If you like your pancakes a little extra with a side of kitsch, head to Mom's Kitchen and Bar. You can get brunch all day here, including the Bedrock Pancakes (with Fruity Pebbles, mixed berries, berry syrup and whipped cream, shown here), mac and cheese pancakes or apple cobbler pancakes. The variations run from enticing (peach melba, and lemon ricotta blueberry) to pushing the envelope, such as the iconic "slutty cakes", which come stuffed with peanut butter. And yes, another fan favorite is the Mac & Cheese pancake, which you can get solo or mashed up with some other brunchy item. (Be forewarned, the restaurant's menu is famously very, very extensive and they're closed Monday and Tuesday.)

Topped with their addictive signature maple butter, besides blueberry, they offer banana-walnut and chocolate chunk, and during pancake month in February, they offer a different flavor every day. And if your little ones can’t get enough at the restaurant, you can make them at home as the recipe is featured in the Clinton St. Baking Company's award-winning cookbook.

At this West Village trattoria, your mood will lift as soon as you see the space, filled as it is with flowers and plants bedecking both the interior and exterior patio. Our fave: the Fritella Botanica served with blueberry compote, lemon ricotta, maple syrup and lemon olive oil, though the Fritella Banana, with candied walnuts and bananas, doesn’t disappoint either. For a Local Favorite and Tons of Charm: Tom's
Helping give Brooklyn the title of best pancakes in New York City, Tom’s is a popular joint with many locals claiming the pancakes are not only the best in the city, but also the best on the planet. Offerings include: lemon ricotta, silver dollar and chocolate chip. Like any Saturday or Sunday, the lines are long, but you won’t go hungry as they keep you fed while waiting. Don’t eat too much as you need to save room for the pancakes. This is another cash only spot, so don’t forget to hit the ATM. Can't deal with long lines? Make a special mid-week pancake date with your kids.
In a little French bistro on a crowded street in Cobble Hill you will find some of the best pancakes in Brooklyn. More like a donut than a pancake, these round, floppy circles of perfection sprinkled with powdered sugar are only served with real maple syrup. During the weekend brunch hours there’s obviously a reason you’ll see a plate of pancakes on every table—they’re that good. This cash-only spot can get packed, so go pre-10 a.m. before the traditional brunch crowd gets there. You're up early anyway, right? If your kids are on the louder side, never fear, they have outdoor seating in a lovely back garden as well.

Get ready to cool off at the best splash pads and water parks that San Diego has to offer
San Diego is one of the best cities in the country for families to while away those cherished summer days. Sure, there are great watering holes and some of the most stunning beaches around, but the city also features an incredible variety of splash pads, water parks, and aquatic centers that will thrill even the pickiest kiddos. We’ve put together a list of the absolute must-sees, must-dos, and must-splash spots so be sure to add them to your summer itinerary stat.
Open since 2014, Waterfront Park is the most significant recreational open space in downtown San Diego and a super special spot to hit up with your brood, especially during the toasty summer months. This 12-acre park is just a stone’s throw from the bay and is tailor made for a fun-filled family day with cool features like a large children’s play zone with great structures to climb and explore, as well as a giant interactive fountain that extends the length of green and has oodles of jets to spray littles. The fountain floor is rough and grippy so kids can romp around safely without worry of slipping.
Insider’s Tip: There’s also an expansive grassy area right by the fountain where you can lay towels, have picnics, and enjoy the breathtaking waterfront views. Additionally, if you you’d like to have a birthday party there, the picnic area near the children’s playground can be reserved.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is one of our absolute favorite places to bring family. During summer though, there’s a good chance kids will get super hot exploring all day so head to the Savanna Cool Zone in the Lion Camp play area. You’ll find mist spraying from palm trees and a big slippery turtle, lion, and crocodile that spout water.
Insider’s Tip: If you feel like your kids really want to get wet here, be sure to pack a swimsuit for them to change into Hours: May 26 – Aug. 12, Mon. – Sun., 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

The splash pad at the Poway Community Swim Center is always a summer fave for families. With a wide selection of geysers, overhead buckets, a water tunnel and more, the only problem you’ll have is getting kiddos to leave at the end of the day.
We also recommend checking out Inflatable Days at the swim center as well. Every Fri. from June 16 – Aug. 4, the pool features gigantic inflatables like the Magneetor or Swing & Slide for everyone to enjoy! Three one-hour sessions are available for jumpers and a swim test and daily admission are required. Wristbands for inflatable participation go on sale 30 min. prior to each time slot and spaces are limited to 25 jumpers per session.

This 500-acre park has tons of fabulous features, but to cool off this summer, we highly recommend a visit to their splash pad. Whether your kiddos love the thrill of getting drenched by a bucket of water or prefer to whoop it up in the spray zone, this splash pad is tons of fun. Even more, there’s a 13-station exercise course if you want to squeeze in a quick workout, as well as rentable picnic areas and a campground if you want to make a whole night of it.

Little guppies can splash about this popular fountain found on the lower level at Del Mar Highlands Town Center. Grab a cup of jo and a maple bacon donut from Sidecar Donuts or enjoy a delicious shaved snow at Iceskimo then kick back and relax at a table on the plaza while your kiddos play nearby. When you’re done, check out One Paseo across the street with lots of adorable shops and fab eateries and grab a bite for lunch.
Cost: Free Note: At time of publication, the pop jet fountain is still closed but is set to reopen in June with a celebration including live music from Hullabaloo, a photo wall, giveaways, an activity station, ice cream for kids from Iceskimo, drinks from Happy Lemon and much more. This is a hidden gem that’s fun for younger kids. The park’s free splash pad is the city’s only interactive water feature that’s open April 1 – Nov. 1 giving your family lots of time to enjoy a little water play long after summer has ended. The fun doesn’t stop there with a great playground, plenty of walking trails, a basketball court, and gazebos with stunning views of Otay Lake.
Beat the heat at the Alga Norte Park Aquatic Center. Not only is the 25-yard instructional pool good for half-pints, but there’s a swell splash pad as well. You’ll find plenty of life vests available and lifeguards on duty. Further, there are lots of changing rooms and warm showers, and you can sit in the lounge chairs under the shade while your little ones frolic about.

Catch some waves at this rad water park in Vista. Whether your little swimmer prefers to casually float along the lazy river, ride the wave machine or plunge down the Riptide Slide, they’re sure to have a total blast. There’s even a splash pad area and a large pool as well. And if you need refuge from the sun, score a cabana day rental. Also, you can grab a bite at the Wave Shack and Surf Spot Grill when everyone gets hungry.

Ahoy Matey! Let your pint-sized Captain Hooks romp around this pirate-themed splash pad on a hot summer day. The park has a large open grassy space and a fab playground with tons of swings – perfect for the entire crew. Pack a lunch and take advantage of the shaded picnic area and BBQs to make a day of it. We’ve also heard rumors about an ice cream truck stopping by on the weekends – so come prepared with a little extra cash on hand.

If you’re heading to LEGOLAND®, a $20 upgrade gets you into LEGOLAND® Water Park and SEA LIFE® Aquarium using the 1-Day Resort Hopper Ticket. And honestly, it’s soooo worth it – especially when temps are on the rise. With seven slides, sandy beaches, a unique Build-A-Raft River, Pirate Reef, and a LEGO Legends of CHIMA Water Park, kiddos will stay entertained non-stop.

Take a leisurely drive to this North County park that’s perfect for toddlers and big kiddos alike. There are two playgrounds: one for younger tots and one for older kids. Half-pints can frolic around the splash pad next to the playground to cool off. You’ll also find a big field to run around and restrooms too. Plus, there’s a pretty amazing concrete snakehead for littles to climb on.
Insider’s Tip: If you feel like picnicking, there are a couple tables available and a place to dispose of hot coals.

The Las Posas Pool and splash pad is always a groovy time for the family. Wee ones can play in the funneled water play area without getting too soaked. The 25-yard recreational lap pool is heated all year long and offers swim lessons for kids. Shade is limited so arrive early to snag a spot. After your day of water play comes to end, let the kids work out any remaining energy at the large grassy park next door.

Wanna give the kids a break from the blazing hot sun? Head indoors to Great Wolf Lodge for some slip sliding, wave-riding good times! Littles can climb the 4-story water tree house, Fort Mackenzie, or kick back and relax on the winding lazy river. For even more adventure, tackle slides together on the River Canyon Run and Howlin' Tornado. And for the tiny tots, the Cub Paw Pool is splash-tastic fun.

Cool off outside the food court at this upscale mall in Chula Vista. Grab a bite from one of many delish restaurants, then stake out a spot on the grass to enjoy a meal in the sun. There are tons of swell shops to check out during your visit as well. Finish off the afternoon with a romp around the splash pad while parents kick back and relax nearby.
Insider Tip: The interactive splash pad is available to the public both days and evenings as a result of the inclusion of multi-colored LED lighting.
As the largest aquatic park of its kind in the country, Mission Bay Park features long stretches of shallow beach next to beautiful grassy fields and biking paths. Perfect for athletic families who love to swim, rollerblade, run, fly kites and explore the playgrounds. Have an adventurous school-ager at home who loves water sports? Try renting a tandem kayak, stand-up paddle board, jet skis, or water-trike at one of many rental facilities around Mission Bay. If your littles are more into sandcastle building and frolicking in the shallow water, stop by one of the eight park areas designated for swimming. At the end of the day, gather around the fire pits by the water’s edge to roast s’mores.

Where else can you enjoy a meal in the fresh air, with space for your kids to explore and get the wiggles out? And with the summer weather holding strong, now is the perfect time to enjoy dining al fresco around town. Here’s our list of Portland restaurants with patios that are not only family-friendly but offer excellent bites to boot!
This pizza bastion of kid-friendliness on Mississippi expanded during the pandemic to include outdoor seating both in the back (borrowing from their neighbors) and in front (using the parking plazas). There are regular shows and events held here, including family-friendly music performances, trivia nights, and special events for kids. Plus, the pizzeria has vegan and gluten-free pie options.
A favorite for breakfast in Portland since 1989, this first-come, first-serve American-style diner offers outside dining on its backyard patio. You might miss out on seeing the still-drivable 1961 pink Cadillac convertible on display inside, but you won’t even miss it with the lush patio and yummy food. And while you can get lunch and dinner, too, we’re really here for the all-day breakfast, especially the French Custard Toast and the Smoked Salmon Benedict.
The founders of this brewery, situated on an impressive 2-acre property, are parents themselves, and their family-friendly outdoor seating area proves it. Grab a burger, tacos, or falafel from the food carts, and then (for the adults) choose from a selection of beer brewed onsite. While there is a tasting room inside, we were truly impressed by the greenhouse beer garden that boasts plenty of outdoor space, games, and even a hop field and a dog run. There’s a rotating menu of food trucks—check the website to see what’s there on which days.
The Northeast branch of this food truck-turned-restaurant boasts a reasonably priced kids’ menu and delicious authentic food from Oaxaca and Northern Mexico. Bonus? Who doesn’t love tacos? One of our favorite spots for the best tacos in town is this cool restaurant with two locations on Hawthorn and Mississippi that both offer patio dining. The Hawthorn location offers both covered (clutch for impromptu rain) and uncovered seating options. The kids will love the tacos and parents can indulge in incredible ceviche and spectacular margaritas. Keep an eye out on their Instagram page for the various fundraisers they often host!

The kids’ menu features some very reasonable prices and fun options like scrambled eggs, lemon ricotta pancakes, and even vegan and gluten-free options for the kiddos. If you’re choosing from the adult menu, you’ll have staple breakfast fare like eggs and pancakes as well, plus wraps, comfort food, and tons of vegetarian and vegan options—and some stellar cocktail options. Enjoy your meal at the picnic tables covered in cute sun umbrellas, but make sure you step inside as well, as the restaurant is proud to be the largest non-gallery art space in the city. Art from local artists hangs on display, and it’s all available for purchase (100% of the price goes directly to the artist!).
This one might be cheating—the seating is technically indoors but the entire wall opens up, so you’re safe from the elements but still breathing fresh outside air. This urban park is sometimes called the city’s “living room,” providing a gathering space for Portland’s residents, and a beautiful place to hang out for a lunch out. The park is jam-packed with beautiful art and flowering plants (often merging the two in beautiful ways) and provides plenty of space to explore or sit and relax. Food trucks line the park, offering up a mix of Mexican food, veggie rice bowls, sushi burrito, and more.
