Traveling with small children can make you feel more like a sherpa on Mount Everest than the jet-setting goddess you were before you became a mom. Between remembering to pack extra diapers, your toddler’s favorite lovey and strollers galore, it can feel overwhelming just getting to your destination. It’s no wonder that rental car agencies and other travel companies offer car seat rentals for families who would rather not lug one more thing through the airport.

With the holiday season approaching, many of us have planned trips to see family or vacations during time off school and work. If you’re traveling by car, then your child’s car seat is likely making the trip as well. But if not, it can be tempting to just rent a car seat at your destination.

But before you give in to this temptation, take note that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children use only new car seats due to the risks associated with used car seats. It can be difficult to tell from visual inspection whether a car seat has been involved in a crash or subject to a manufacturer recall.

There is also no guarantee your car seat rental will be in good condition. According to a Consumer Reports study, safety technicians examined car seats available from several large rental car agencies and found many were expired, had broken parts or were missing labels or infant carrier bases. And even if your car seat rental is in working order, there is no way to assure it will not be covered in crumbs, spills or unknown stains.

The bottom line? Car seat safety is not worth sacrificing for convenience.

Your best bet is to purchase an affordable, no-frills car seat at your destination or bring one with you. With devices such as the Baby Trend Snap-N-Go or Go-Go Babyz Travelmate, you can convert your car seat into a stroller. And, if your child is at least 4 years old, you can leave their everyday car seat behind and pack a small, travel-friendly booster seat like the BubbleBum.

Traveling with small children is no small feat, but with a little planning, you can ensure you keep your little ones safe throughout your journey.

I’m a Northern Virginia-based freelance writer, attorney and mom of two little ones. I have an eye for trends and a passion for words. My days are often spent stepping on LEGO bricks and relying on caffeine as a sleep substitute.

The New York Toy Fair 2018 is bringing innovations and new products galore to us ‘always on the search for the next big thing’ mamas. But not every toy that’s making its way to the showcase is brand-new. Pillow Pets are coming back, and in a major way.

The original Pillow Pets line is relaunching this year. The “Signature” line will include popular pets, featuring the panda, penguin, unicorn and zebra.

Along with the re-release of the original naptime pals, Pillow Pets is launching several brand-new products. These include products specifically for babies. The My First Pillow Pet line will come in pastel colors and feature three sizes — 5-inch, 11-inch and 18-inch pets. But this isn’t the only line for babies that Pillow Pets is debuting. The Natural Pillow Pets line has cuddly soft that are made from Sherpa materials.

If your kiddo needs a nightlight, the Sleeptime Lites line pulls double duty. Like the name says, it’s a Pillow Pet that also has a nightlight function. Sleeptime Lites have their own timers that shut the lights down after 20 minutes.

Pillow Pets is also bringing some of your kiddo’s favorite licensed characters to their new lines. This includes a Sesame Street line with Elmo, Abby Cadabby and Cookie Monster and other characters from the small screen.

Does your child have a favorite bedtime toy? Share their pick with us in the comments below.

Seattle’s abundance of rocky shoreline makes for amazing afternoon tide pooling. But when it comes to sandy beaches, Seattle could definitely take a few tips from sunny San Diego. So what’s a family to do when they need to feel the sand between their toes and the sun on their backs? Head to Jetty Island in Everett, that’s what! This quick island getaway has two miles of prime sandy real estate just waiting to be claimed by your beach towel and umbrella. So pack your beach bag and read on for the deets.

photo: S I. via Yelp

Getting There
The Jetty Island passenger ferry is located at the 10th Street Boat Launch and Marina in Everett. It’s easy to find and has plenty of parking for those looking to make the quick (less than 5 minute) crossing to this sandy paradise. Parking is just $3 and there’s no time limit to worry about. Once you’ve parked (and paid) you can enjoy the day without worrying about feeding a meter.

photo: Leslie R. via Yelp

Grab a Ticket and Plan to Wait
On sunny days especially, expect a wait (sometimes up to two hours) for space on the passenger ferry. Tickets go quickly once the park opens in the morning, and are doled out on a first come, first serve basis. We suggest getting there an hour before you’d like to ferry over, just to be on the safe side. Then, enjoy the big grassy field and some boat watching in the marina while you wait. Bring some chairs to lounge in and play a few rounds of Eye Spy to pass the time.

Bonus: Everett residents and parties of 8 or more (lucky!) can make reservations by calling 425-257-8304. The reservation line is open Monday thru Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to call at least 48 hours ahead to guarantee a seat on the ferry of your choosing. Then, you’ll be off on your island adventure before you know it!

If Ever You Needed a Sherpa
Jetty Island is an only-bring-what-you-can-carry kind of destination. When packing your beach bag think big and light. Beach towels, dry clothes, sunscreen, water and food for you and your little beach bums (plus a little extra) are must-haves. And although strollers aren’t verboten, they are highly discouraged because they’re cumbersome both on the ferry and along the sand paths. Strapping on babes is the way to go, and it still leaves hands free for sibs and your stuffed-to-the-rim beach bag.

No Shade Zone
If shade is your thing, be sure to pack your own, because beach is the word on this island adventure. Sun hats, sunglasses and even a sun tent will be welcomed additions to your expedition. And the mantra with sunscreen is apply early, apply often, then slap on some more. The upside of this seriously sunny beach? It’s a kite flyers delight. No trees and the cool breeze equals killer fly time!

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

Plenty of Room to Roam
Jetty Island is affected by some crazy dynamic tides, and chances are you’ll experience either tides rolling in or tides rolling out during your visit. Lucky you! Low tide also leaves plenty of room for little beachcombers to run, explore and build sandcastles that rival Olivia’s with some of the best building sand around. And either tide means easy spotting for the little ones, as there’s nothing to block your view from the beach. So sit back and relax, or join in the play.

Beachside Eats
Since there’s nowhere to buy eats on the island, pack plenty of food and drink in your over-sized beach bag. Where’s Hermoine’s never-ending purse when you need it? Families can picnic on the beach or plant themselves on one of the many picnic tables that line the beach. Then, pass the munchies and marvel at the kiteboarders (sweet!) off in the distance. Or, if you’re looking for a little relief, try the shaded picnic shelters near the dock.

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

Daily Activities
Jetty Island offers free daily programs to visitors. From nature walks to tide talks to sea creature spotting, visitors can learn about Puget Sound wildlife, flora and geology throughout the day. Check the online class schedule before you head out or the markerboard when you land for the day’s activities. Families can also enjoy special programs throughout the season like nature crafts and late night campfires designed for all ages!

photo: Kristina Moy

When the Day is Done
As soon as you get to Jetty Island, be sure to grab your tickets for the return ferry. They go quickly and are limited in number. But don’t worry if you don’t get the ferry you want. Just put your name on the standby list (talk to the naturalists that greet you when you disembark) and then head over about 15 minutes before the return time that works best for you. If you don’t catch that ferry, you’re almost sure to be on the next. Bottom line is… they won’t leave you on the island (even if you beg!). Just pack a few extra munchies and some drinks for the standby line, then keep your eyes peeled for playful sea lions who like to hang out around the docks.

Your sidekick calls you “mom,” but sometimes you feel more like a Seattle Sherpa, scaling the heights of Queen Anne after rocking a day of play at the Seattle Center. And whether you carry your essentials in a practical backpack or a stylish boho bag, Seattle moms have their own special brand of parenting survival gear that’s always at the ready. We peeked in a few hundred bags and came up with this list of what Seattle moms typically tote.

photo: Janine via Flickr

1. Coffee Punch Card. A loyalty card to the neighborhood coffee shop is a tote-along fave for Seattle moms. Indie shops serving up bold brews are where moms in the trenches meet to debrief and refuel, while the kiddos entertain each other. And who couldn’t use a free coffee every now and again?

photo: Nick Webb via Flickr

2. Organic Snacks. Whether you’re toting it in the form of a fruit and veggie squeezy pouch or as cut up pieces of fresh farmers market goodness, Seattle moms love healthy, organic snacks for their Littles.

3. Seashells and Rocks. When Puget Sound’s in your backyard, beach trips happen. And seaside outings mean a kid-curated collection of shells and rocks, all painstakingly handpicked by your little oceanographer. Luckily you’ve got just the right bag to carry those precious finds until the next beach trip, when they will quickly be forgotten and replaced by a new set of the most important rocks and shells ever discovered.

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

4. Membership Cards. Membership definitely has it privileges for Seattle families, which is why so many moms carry membership cards to the Woodland Park Zoo, Seattle Children’s Museum, Pacific Science Center or Museum of Flight wherever they go. Because you never know when your bestie’s going to text an impromptu invite to one of the Big Four playdate hot spots, you never leave home without them!

5. A “Device.” In the world of Microsoft and Amazon, sometimes down time equals device time for Seattle’s cuties. That’s why mom keeps her smartphone or tablet tucked safely in her tote, fully loaded with educational and artsy apps for kids. Plus, mom’s got to have her camera handy to catch those memorable moments with her sweet sidekick!

6. REI Co-op Card. This is where Seattle moms gear up their families. From raincoats, to toddler skis, to baby’s bicycle carriers so everyone in the family can hit the Burke Gilman on a sunny day. And being an REI member is the best way to earn bucks to buy…you guessed it… more gear for next season’s adventures! Plus, the second-floor play space is a wicked cool free spot to hang on a rainy day.

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

7. Wipes. Part of mom-preparedness means having wipes at the ready to take care of messy faces and busy hands that seem to attract germs with magnetic force. Cleanliness is next to mom-liness when you’re on the go with Seattle kids!

8. Crayons. Whether mom’s got the standard 4-color combo she grabbed from a favorite eatery just last week or a more varied selection she’s zipped tightly in a baggie, carry-along crayons reign supreme as an easy distraction for the tot lot. Whip them out while waiting for an oil change, or when you’re stuck in traffic on the I-90 bridge, and you’ve bought yourself some extra time plus a little peace and quiet too!

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

9. Spare Socks. Along with Seattle’s notorious weather, comes soggy grass and irresistible puddles, begging for a little jumpy splashy time. For Seattle moms, that means lots and lots of unexpectedly wet feet. But a quick change of socks dries everything out, so you and your mini crew can get on with the day!

10. Discover Pass. We found this one in mom’s other tote—the glove box of her car. Between the breathtaking beach views and the unpredictable “sun breaks” Seattle gets, it’s wise to keep this state park pass at the ready, so the tykes can soak up vitamin D or take a quick romp through the great outdoors at a moment’s notice.

photo: Allison Sutcliffe

11. Reusable Grocery Bags. Because remembering just one more thing as you wrangle your wiggler out of the car and into the store is just too much for a busy mom. That’s why Seattle moms keep their go-green reusable bags handy in their handbag. It makes the grocery rounds a little easier and a lot better for Mother Earth.

What are the must-haves in your purse? Tell us in the Comments below!

Looking for a new adventure? Westmoreland Park Nature Play Area may just be what the sherpa ordered. Scale massive logs, cross wooden bridges and scramble over real boulders at this newer play space that opened at the end of last year in the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood, inviting kids to make up their own games and races using things found in nature. Here are six reasons why your family should go check it out now.

photo: Portland Parks and Recreation

1. You won’t find any monkey bars.
Yep, you read that right. This is Stumptown’s first permanent nature-based play area. (Excuse us while we wipe away a few tears of pride.) Instead of typical twisty slides and tire swings, your little ones can climb on boulders, traverse logs, dig in sand and use cut pine branches to make forts and caves. (Okay, there is one slide, but it’s pretty simple.) It’s all part of the Portland Parks and Recreation’s Nature Play Initiative, encouraging imaginative kids’ play, based on interactions with natural objects.

2. You won’t miss the traditional playground experience. And trust us, neither will your kids.
Here’s the deal. Kids like to play. And they don’t need to be told how to do it. Go to any park with a jungle gym and we guarantee you’ll still see kids engineering some wacky game you’ve never heard of before. (“Lava Monster,” anyone?) Westmoreland’s Park makes kids’ imagination — not a fancypants slide — the main focus. Its unofficial motto is, “Here’s nature. Go wild.”

3. You won’t see any parents on smartphones.
On two recent trips, we saw dozens of parents — and zero phone usage. The reason? Nearly every parent was playing with their little ones, be it chasing after them, helping them dig a moat in the sand, or dragging logs to help construct a fort. Ironically, the fort was to keep parents out. This park doesn’t just entice kids to play, but parents, too.

 photo: Courtesy of Stephanie Booth

 4. “Playing” has never been so important.
Think of this as the “Waldorf School” of parks. Kids are learning a love of nature, feeding their imaginations, solving problems, assessing risks, and best of all, figuring out how to entertain themselves. And (gasp!) all without a screen.

5.  You should bring a picnic — and your own water.
File this park away for a perfect picnic destination, thanks to plenty of tables and a shady grove of giant sequoia trees. Carry in your own water, though; at least for now. They’re shut down for the winter, like all of the other parks. They’ll be back on somewhere around mid-to-late March. True, the dull roar of traffic from nearby 99 can be a tad distracting, but at least fresh scent of pine and mulch overpower any exhaust.

6. No dogs in the play area.
Dogs like to, sniff, dig and (ahem) mark their territory, so they’re not allowed in the new play area. We get it. They can, however, be walked on the little bridges and trails just outside the fenced-in nature play area. And if your furry family member needs to sit and stay for a while, at least there are plenty of ducks in the restored Crystal Springs Creek to keep him entertained.

Have you visited this park yet?  Let us know in the Comments below!
