1. Make Homemade Popsicles

An icy popsicle on a hot summer day is a snack everybody loves. Especially teething littles, who get soothing comfort along with their sweet treat. Make them at home as a family using these awesome recipes.

2. Break Out the Bubble Machine

Babies love bubbles like new moms love a full night of sleep! So turn on the bubble machine and watch your sweet babe try to catch those bubbles before they burst. Who knows, maybe they’ll get so worn out they’ll sleep better so you can sleep better.

3. Run Through Sprinklers

Nothing screams childhood like running through sprinklers in the summertime. Babies not walking yet will shriek with delight as you take them through the droplets.

4. Design a Masterpiece on Your Sidewalk

Get chalkin’ with some sidewalk art. It’s a great way to be creative outdoors, especially in the evenings. If you need inspiration, try these 15 fun chalk ideas that are sure to bring you and your mini-Matisse hours of fun. Younger babes will love to explore the chalk’s texture and bright colors.

5. Read a Book in the Shade

Being outside in the summer months doesn’t have to be about high-energy, sweaty activities. Slow it down with a children’s book under your favorite tree. Choose one of these kid classics or opt for one of baby’s faves. Either way you’re fostering a love of reading and spending time outdoors.

6. Go on a Picnic

Move meals outside by packing some easy snacks and a few toys in a diaper bag or wagon, and you’re ready for a no-fuss summer adventure with minimal clean-up.

7. Have a Water Balloon Toss

On a hot summer day, a water balloon toss is always a hit. Younger babies can touch and roll the squishy, colorful balloons, and toddlers will be all about throwing them.

8. Set Up a Sensory Station

Nothing engages preschoolers quite like a sensory bin filled with things to touch, smell, and see. Find recipes and ideas for cloud dough, sponge bombs, rainbow spaghetti and more in our sensory play guide

9. Visit a Farmers Market (or Plant a Garden at Home)

Here’s the upside of kids who wake up super early—you can be the first to arrive anywhere on the weekend. Farmers markets open early, so they’ll be ready for you and your sweet pea. If you want to avoid crowds, plant herbs or flowers and watch them grow with your kids at home. When it comes to summer activities for preschoolers, you can’t go wrong with this one.

10. Watch a Movie in the Backyard (or Living Room)

Skip the high-priced local cinema and cuddle up under the stars to watch your family’s favorite flicks. An outdoor theater is not hard to set up, and it’ll be a summer memory everyone cherishes. No yard? Find a blank wall in your home (or hang up a white sheet), and set up blankets and pillows on the floor to re-create the experience indoors.

11. Make Homemade Ice Cream or Gelato

Once you’ve perfected your popsicle recipe, move on to the creamier stuff. Making homemade ice cream or gelato is easier than it sounds; there’s a reason it makes out summer activities for preschoolers hit list. We found a kid-friendly recipe that shows how you can make it with just a Ziploc food-storage bag.

12. Visit a Petting Zoo

Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of local petting zoos, where kids can spend hours meeting and greeting their favorite furry animals.

13. Go to a Concert at the Park (or Dance to Laurie Berkner)

Check your neighborhood listings to see if there are concerts in nearby parks. If not, check out kid-favorite singer Laurie Berkner’s website for videos you can sing and dance along with.

14. Go Stargazing

Clear, mild summer nights are ideal for gazing at the stars. Here are handy tips on how to have a stargazing adventure that your toddler will be talking about for years to come. Download one of the many apps that tell you what you’re looking at.

15. Visit a Water Park (or Set Up an Epic Kiddie Pool at Home)

Water parks can offer hours of fun on a hot summer day. Choose a weekday, if you can, when they tend to be less crowded. You can also wow your kids with an epic kiddie pool at home (hint: it’s one of our favorite summer activities for preschoolers because it’s an easy win). Dress up a plastic or inflatable pool with a plastic kiddie slide and small chairs, adding bubble bath to the water, and tossing in plastic balls, bath toys, or pool noodles.

16. Host an Outdoor Tea Party

A royally fun way to move an indoor activity outside for the summer. Set up your tea party under a shady tree or in a kiddie pool for maximum fun. Drink chilled tea or water; the fun comes in nibbling on pastries and small sandwiches.

17. Fly a Kite

On the next windy day, go fly a kite. One of the easiest summer activities for preschoolers this one doesn’t take much prep. Simply, choose a smaller kite that kids can control. Once it’s up, let your child help hold the string to watch it soar and glide.

18. Paint Rocks

Painting outdoors is an easy way to let toddlers get messy without worrying about destroying the furniture. First, gather and clean some rocks, and then paint them. Finally, place them together in the yard for all to enjoy.

19. Splatter Paint

Summer is a great time for kids to take it outside. And that means their art projects too. Check out our guide to messy, fun outdoor art projects to get kids splatter painting on a massive canvas, making bubble art, and even using squirt guns to color a canvas.

20. Host a Family Bike Wash

Get your whole family outside to give your tricycles and bikes a good washing. Suds plus water always equals a good time, especially when the temps heat up.

21. Pitch a Tent in the Backyard (or Living Room)

Not ready to take the plunge into a full family camping excursion? Test the waters by pitching a tent outside to play in or sleep in. Your little one will feel all of the excitement and you’ll have none of the stress of realizing you forgot something your baby needs! No yard? Camp in the living room!

Jennifer Coolidge is set to play an overbearing mother-in-law in Shotgun Wedding, and the trailer is gold

Jennifer Coolidge is truly having a moment. Fresh off her success in her role as Tanya in The White Lotus, the star is taking on a new character: an overbearing mother-in-law. More specifically, JLo‘s overbearing mother-in-law. A new trailer for Shotgun Wedding featuring Coolidge in all her glory is here, and now we officially can’t wait to see the movie.

The new trailer gives us more of a look at the movie’s supporting cast, which includes Coolidge alongside Sônia Braga, Cheech Marin, Selena Tan, and D’Arcy Carden.

Shotgun Wedding stars Josh Duhamel and Jennifer Lopez as a couple getting ready to tie the knot. But disaster strikes when their destination wedding is crashed by pirates who take their families hostage, at which point the good-looking duo attempts to escape to a neighboring island to find help—if they can get there without killing each other first. Prime Video describes the R-rated rom-com as a “hilarious, adrenaline-fueled adventure as Darcy and Tom must save their loved ones.”

Coolidge, despite being a supporting character, seems likely to play a significant role based on the two trailers that have been released so far. In the first trailer, which dropped on Oct. 4, she can be seen handling some heavy-duty weaponry as she helps the families escape the pirates. In the newest trailer, which dropped earlier this week, we get a clearer view of Coolidge as the movie’s comedic relief, including one scene where she leads the wedding attendants in a sing-along of Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be.”

If you’ve been looking forward to Shotgun Wedding for a while, you’re not alone—it’s been in the works at Prime Video for quite a while, but was held up when Armie Hammer, originally planned to play the lead opposite Lopez, was accused of misconduct and needed to be recast. But finally, the countdown is on. Shotgun Wedding will be available to stream on Amazon Prime on Jan. 27.

Seasonal entertainment commences nightly starting at 5 p.m. and includes a lovely candlelight procession starting at Avila Adobe at 7 p.m. The leaders of the march (who are usually little ones) dress as shepherds, angels, Mary and Joseph, and are followed by dozens of other worshippers. The procession strolls up and down Olvera Street singing songs in English and Spanish. They make stops at stores along the way requesting shelter but will be denied until they are eventually admitted and receive complimentary champurrado, pan dulce, and pinatas bursting in celebration.

For parents, Spotify Wrapped is just a record of how many times your kids said, “Alexa, play ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno'” in 2022

For most people, Spotify Wrapped is a cool, end-of-the-year trend. I mean, getting to see your top artists and songs, all sprinkled with some cool data about your music listening habits? That’s a lot of fun, and if you’ve been anywhere near a social media site in the last few days, you’ve probably seen people sharing slides with all their Spotify info neatly rounded up, complete with flashy graphics. Unless your friends are parents, that is. Because while Spotify wrapped is a fun trend for anyone who has control over their own Spotify account, parents know that when a tiny dictator rules the metaphorical Aux cable, things start to look a little different.

That’s why it’s so hilarious that parents are choosing to share their Spotify Wrapped this year anyway, complete with thousands of listens to Peppa Pig and the Encanto soundtrack.

In fact, the playlists that parents are sharing are likely making us all feel seen, which we deserve after suffering through the year of “We don’t talk about Bruno, no no no,” and sorry for getting it stuck in your head, once again.

Even if you’re a parent who had your own favorite song that you played on repeat this year, it just can’t compete with the levels of musical obsessions that babies and toddlers are able to achieve. Honestly, any human who can earnestly listen to “You Are My Sunshine” nearly 800 times deserves to dominate your Spotify Wrapped, because I’m pretty sure that would be considered torture in some countries.

So parents, even though your Spotify Wrapped is completely borked, think of it as a badge of honor. If you endured all that Disney sing-along, Angry Birds, and Crazy Frog, you deserve to be recognized for it all over social media.

So share that Spotify Wrapped, and just know that all the other parents out there are both laughing and crying right along with you (probably with Frozen playing in the background. Again.).

Looking for post-present activities? These things to do in Seattle on Christmas Day will keep your crew entertained

Just because the presents are all opened and the wrapping paper is all over the floor doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop there. There are still a lot of things to do in Seattle on Christmas Day that your family can enjoy from sun up to sun down. From taking a hike to eating a good meal to looking at the lights that you were too busy to see before now—we’ve got them all right here. Check out all that is available to you this year.

1. Go Ice Skating

Whether you want to head to the Eastside or drive north to Everett, the 25th of December is a great day to go on an ice skating adventure. So grab your skates if you've got 'em. The Bellevue Downtown Ice Rink will be open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and the Pacific Ice rink will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Both will have festive music and hot cocoa at the ready, so you can warm up when you're done. Advance tickets are recommended for both rinks.

2. Explore the Gingerbread Village

This year's Gingerbread Village isn't actually a village this time around. The theme is "Buzzing Back" with larger-than-life gingerbread creations based on the Disney/Pixar film, Lightyear. Local architecture firms were paired up pastry chefs (and a few children) to create works of art made with gingerbread, cookies, candy and a lot of frosting. The display can be viewed at the Sheraton Grand Seattle. Admission is free, but donations will be gladly accepted which will benefit the Juvenile Research Foundation. Viewing times are between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

3. Enjoy George Balanchine's The Nutcracker at Home

If you wanted to take the kids to see George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker at McCaw Hall, but just weren't able to fit it in before Christmas, why not bring the ballet to your home? A digital-only presentation is available from Dec. 19-27, 2022.  It's the perfect way to get your annual sugarplum fairy fix, without the fuss. To watch at home, simply purchase your digital ticket, then let the kids dance, sing, and take as many potty breaks as they need while you stream this fabulous show.

4. Partake in a Great Meal

There are quite a few restaurants who will be open and welcoming guests this Christmas and we're not talking about the greasy spoon down the street. If you want this year's holiday to be special (and who doesn't?) consider splurging on a good meal that your family will be talking about for years to come. Those taking reservations for dinner for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or both include The Dining Room at The Salish Lodge. They will be offering a fantastic three-course meal. Arrive early enough in the day that you can take in the amazing view of the falls before your feast. Chef Brian Doherty would love to host you at The Goldfinch Tavern located at the Four Seasons Hotel with view of Elliott Bay. The George at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel will be serving family-style dinners. Ray's Boathouse will be serving three-course meals while Ray's Cafe will be offering a la carte specials.

5. Bundle Up for a Hike

We'll keep our fingers crossed for a sunny winter day so you can take the kids hiking on Christmas. Heading out for an easy hike at a nearby park, sanctuary, or forest preserve is a great way to get the kids outside for some fresh air—a tall order with all the rain we've been having. Waterfalls and streams are especially magical this time of year. Just remember to wear layers, bring water, and have spare socks (along with other winter essentials) in your pack before you head out.

6. Take a Day Trip

If you’re longing for a white Christmas, pack up the kids, gas up the family roadster and head towards the Cascade Mountains. There are two spectacular family-friendly day destinations waiting for you there. At Suncadia Resort, you'll find all the winter activity your family needs—ice skating, tubing, snowshoeing and more in one location. And with restaurants that will be serving up eats all day, you can keep everyone happy from sun up to sun down. The Bavarian town of Leavenworth (pictured) will be festooned with over 500,000 lights and decorations, from one end of the main drag to the other. Stop in the shops, sit down to a hearty meal and take it all in before heading home. The best part? Both are perfect destinations for an overnight, too.

7. Catch a Good Flick

For some families, catching a flick on the big screen has long been a Christmas Day tradition. Maybe that's why so many good movies are released over the Christmas weekend. This year, families can sit down to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish where the lovable feline is coming to grips with that fact that he only has nine lives to live and prepare for an ultimate showdown with Jack and Jill. Roald Dahl's Matilda: the Musical debuts on Christmas Day telling the tale of an extraordinary girl with a vivid imagination (and a magical touch) who dares to stand up for herself. Disney's Strange World is a sci-fi adventure comedy about three generations exploring new worlds and trying to survive each other. The semi-autobiographical story about director Steven Spielberg's life growing up is told through The Fabelmans. And the l-o-n-g awaited Avatar: The Way of Water is finally here continuing the story from the first film. Better re-watch that one first to get caught up.

8. Light Up the Night

You can drive around your own neighborhood to look at Christmas lights or head to a decked out 'hood like Ravenna's Candy Cane Lane, but if you really want to get up close and personal with a dazzling holiday light display, it doesn’t get any better than the Holiday Lights & Delights at Westlake Park or Occidental Square. The oversized light sculptures of presents, ornaments and arches aren’t just for ogling at—some are for walking through too.

9. Hit the Slopes

If a day on the mountain sounds good to you, you're in luck. Our wet winter has meant early snowfall in the mountains, so most of the Seattle-area ski slopes are open already. Whether you've got a season pass or you need to grab a lift ticket for the day (they're selling out fast!), there's no better day to carve than Christmas, when the slopes are less crowded than usual. So strap your skis onto the rack and head to the hills today. Hint: If you're not a skiier, you can also snag a ticket to go tubing at The Summit at Snoqualmie.

Hop on board the holiday season with these magical train rides in the San Francisco Bay Area that’ll keep your winter festivities on track

It’s the time of the year to start thinking about booking your family’s holiday train tickets. Sure, your winter schedule is already packed with experiences like picking out your Christmas tree or catching a merry show nearby. But the holiday trains are just waiting for you to jump on board. The magic of these festive rides—from twinkling lights to hot cocoa to Santa himself—will get the entire family in the spirit and could even become one of those traditional can’t-miss local events. However, holiday train rides in the Bay Area are super popular, so be sure to book early so you don’t miss out, and then get ready to bring on the cheer.

1. Santa Cruz Holiday Lights Train

It’s a true Californian Christmas when Santa is at the beach. St. Nick will join your family aboard this vintage Bay Area train decorated with thousands of lights. Once you embark on this 60-minute round trip, your family can enjoy refreshments, a holiday sing-along, and, of course, a visit from Santa. And the fun doesn’t stop when the train pulls back into the station. For just $7 you can purchase a pass to take advantage of the attractions and arcade at Neptune’s Kingdom.

Good to Know: There is also a Holiday Tree Walk where you can take a steam train from Roaring Camp’s Felton location to Bear Mountain and view a tree-lined walk of decorated trees. Stick around in town after the ride for winter-themed activities.

Dates: Nov. 25-26, Dec. 3-4, 10-11, 17-23; Times vary.
Cost: $44/adults; $33/children ages 2-12. Parking in lot across the street is $10.

2. The Caltrain Holiday Train

This train brings the holiday fun to you. A tradition since 2011, this free family event is a chance to check out special Caltrain cars decked out with over 70,000 glittering lights. The Holiday Train stops at nine Caltrain stations between San Francisco and Santa Clara. Come to one of the Bay Area stations to take in the beautiful train, listen to holiday entertainment, and bring a donation for Toys 4 Tots, as they will be collecting there. This is a great option for those looking to experience the magic of a Holiday train, without committing to an hour-plus ride. Not to mention, the price is right.

Good to Know: This is not a ride and no passengers are allowed on the holiday train. The public is invited to join in the celebration at each of the stations 30 minutes before the expected arrival time.

Dates: Dec. 3-4; Times vary
Cost: Free

3. Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad Holiday Train

The Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad offers all of the holiday fun on a smaller scale. The sweet little open-air train winds through part of Vasona Park’s Fantasy of Lights spectacular. The 1.5-mile loop is just enough to get that festive fix and get to bed on time. If you’re up for a little more action after the ride, there are plenty more light displays in the park to check out, which aren’t visible from the train (a separate ticket is needed).

Good to Know: Dress warmly: The train is small (roller coaster-style seats) with no roof or windows. You can also walk or drive your car through Vasona Park to see the Festival of Lights. Avoid University Avenue when arriving: Take Los Gatos Boulevard to Blossom Hill Road and turn right into the Oak Meadow parking lot.

Dates: Thurs.-Sun., Dec. 8-30; 6-9 p.m.
Cost: $7/person for one train ride and one carousel ride. Children under age 3 ride free with a paying adult.

The trains run during the day, so this is a great option for kids (and adults) who can’t stay up late.

Good to know: The train is usually comprised of one or two cars which run on electricity. So no giant locomotives here. There is a huge barn of rail cars in various stages of repair, which is super fun to check out before and after. The railway museum is all volunteer-run. Older kids will especially enjoy hearing the history of the trains and cars.

It’s like the pages of “The Polar Express” come alive on this one-hour journey. Many of the book’s characters join riders, including the Conductor, the Dancing Waiters, and the ghostly Hobo. It’s no wonder these tickets seem to sell out as soon as they’re available. Each coach and first-class car has a different theme, so you can book the exact one you want. All riders will get a magical first gift of Christmas from Santa—that beautiful silver bell.

Good to Know: Museum members get first crack at tickets for this wildly-popular event (remember that for next year), but it’s worth checking the website frequently as tickets are occasionally available as the museum processes returns. Family-friendly tips for celebrating at the Merriest Place on Earth

The holidays have arrived at the Disneyland Resort! From now through Jan. 8, 2023, families can get their fill of holiday magic that includes everything from a new food and drink lineup fit for foodies, to gorgeous holiday decor, and seasonal ride overlays.

We got a sneak peek on the first day the parks opened up donned in their holiday best and have all the tips for making your trip to the Happiest Place on Earth the best during this magical time of year.

What to Know about Holidays at Disneyland

Magic Bands Have Arrived in California

Karly Wood

After jealously ogling the Magic Bands that all the Florida resorts have been using for years, Californians and visitors to the Disneyland Resort can finally pick up their own! Magic Bands are multi-functional bracelets that let you store tons of information, like your entry pass and Lightning Lane reservations.

We love them because there are tons of designs to choose from, everyone can wear their own, and it makes getting into the parks and onto rides where you are redeeming a Lightning Lane pass a cinch. Just hold your band up to the sensor and you're in!

You can enjoy the parks without a Magic Band, just as always. But if you're interested in purchasing your own, they are available all through the parks and start at $35 (and they work at Walt Disney World, too!).

Seasonal Attraction Overlays

Karly Wood

Every year, select attractions get a holiday makeover which makes a trip to the parks even more magical. Be sure to hit up "it's a small world" Holiday in all its lit-up glory both inside and out.

The other can't-miss ride is the "Haunted Mansion Holiday" where Jack Skellington has transformed the New Orleans house into his own world.

Holiday Entertainment

Disneyland Resort

Get into the holiday spirit in a jiffy with the annual “A Christmas Fantasy” Parade. This daily trek down Main Street U.S.A. boasts everyone's favorite characters, dancing gingerbread cookies and marching toy soldiers, and lots of festive music.

Once it gets dark, snag a spot to catch the “Believe… in Holiday Magic” fireworks show, complete with a “snowfall" and vibrant projections.

Enjoy the Festive Menu

Karly Wood

There is no shortage of amazing holiday-themed food this season at Disneyland. Enjoy the likes of the Jolly Holiday Bakery's Peppermint Cookie Doughnut, a Haunted Mansion Cake, Cranberry BBQ Chicken Sandwich, and even a Charcuterie Pizza Slice.

Don't forget the annual, special-edition popcorn bucket! This year's most coveted option is the musical holiday popcorn tin and the line to pick one up proves it. If this is a must-have item, be sure to get to the parks early for the shortest line possible.

Disney California Adventure Disney Festival of Holidays

Holiday Decor

Karly Wood

Once again, the Festival of Holidays has returned to Disney California Adventure, celebrating Christmas, Navidad, Three Kings Day, Hanukkah, Diwali, and Kwanzaa. From the moment you enter the park, you’ll be greeted with the sights and sounds of this wonderful time of year.

Buena Vista Street welcomes you with a 50-foot Christmas tree, decorated in vintage ornaments and Cars Land has been decked out in whimsical holiday decorations like a tire Christmas Tree. Even Mater has gotten a fun makeover!

Sip and Savor Pass

Karly Wood

As you make your way toward Paradise Gardens Park, you’ll be treated to many food and drink options at the Festival Marketplaces. In order to get the full experience, we highly recommend picking up a Sip and Savor Pass. Each one comes with eight tabs that you can redeem on hand-crafted food items and non-alcoholic beverages. It’s a great way to let everyone pick something they want, and the sizes are perfect for sharing when you pick out a few at a time.

We tried a variety of diverse options, and we thoroughly enjoyed the curry mac and cheese, Tikka Masala, Turkey Poutine, and the delicious pumpkin cheesecake!

Family hack: You can place your order for all your food at ONE cart––even if that cart doesn’t carry your menu item. Then, when you’re ready, take your receipt to the correct cart and pick up your food. This way, you only wait in the order line one time!

Entertainment

Disneyland Resort

Disney California Adventure has plenty of family-friendly entertainment, including “Mickey’s Happy Holidays.” This procession brings Disney and Pixar characters together as they dance and march to the sounds of the Holiday Toy Drummers.

The “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!” street party is back this year and features both Mickey and Minnie Mouse wearing fiesta outfits alongside Mexican folklórico dancers, Mariachis, Brazilian samba dancers, percussionists, and giant mojiganga puppets.

If you love the nighttime spectacular, World of Color, get ready for the Season of Light version! This special holiday show brings holiday music and all the special moments from Disney animated films together for an unforgettable and brilliantly lit show. It features lights, lasers, water, fire, and hundreds of fountains, as well as 120 characters in this mesmerizing production set to treasured holiday tunes. Be sure to snag your spot when reservations open on the Disneyland app at 12 p.m. daily.

Looking for Santa? Like last year, you can find him hanging out at his rustic home on the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail.

Festive Attractions

Disneyland Resort

While most of the attractions will remain the same this season (with the exception of some fun decor) you can experience two special seasonal experiences in Cars Land. Be sure to check out Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl, where you can enjoy Luigi’s magically light backyard, as well as Mater’s Jingle Jamboree.

Visit Disneyland & Disney California Adventure now through Jan. 8, 2023, to experience the Merriest Place on Earth for the holiday season.

This trip was paid for by Disneyland, but all opinions here belong to the writer.
