It’s that time of year again when the fear of germs comes rushing back along with cold and flu season. The best way to stay safe and ward off those germs is with good old fashioned hand washing. One teacher conducted an experiment to prove why washing properly is so important and everyone needs to see these results.

For every parent who has eyeballed those so-called washed hands and made your kids wash them again, there is finally some vindication thanks to behavior specialist Jaralee Metcalf and teacher Dayna Robertson. The duo shared a class experiment they conducted on germs. “We did a science project in class this last month as flu season was starting,” Metcalf wrote in a Facebook post which has since gone viral.

“We took fresh bread and touched it. We did one slice untouched. One with unwashed hands. One with hand sanitizer. One with washed hands with warm water and soap. Then we decided to rub a piece on all our classroom Chromebooks,” she continued.

The results of the experiment are visually stunning and pretty much speak for themselves. Germs are no joke, but proper hand washing can go a long way to protecting you, as the piece of bread touched by washed hands clearly indicates. Even hand sanitizer proved unable to stave off germs the way washing with soap and water does.

Next time your kids whine about washing their hands just show them these pictures, or better yet, have some fun and conduct the experiment yourself at home.

12 Mom-Tested Home Remedies to Fight Colds & Flu

I had heard about mom guilt. My first encounter with it was interviewing for a nanny job at the age of 22 where I tried to empathize with the mom as a young adult, and not an ounce of mom experience. I had no grasp of the weight of what she was saying until I too became a mom and my guilt started dragging me down.

As a stay at home mom, I certainly may not experience mom guilt in the working-mom sense brought on by the fear of missing milestones, not being able to kiss every boo-boo, or missing the tickles and giggles that fill each day but I have guilt and it comes from a very different place. As a stay at home mom, I am lonely, anxious, and well…bored. The daily anxiety of needing to do more, contribute more, and feel important fills my mind. Trust me, I know what you are thinking! Being a mom and raising good humans is beyond important and totally checks all the above-mentioned criteria. But knowing this does not take away the monotony of the job. So, I feel guilty as hell! I am a child specialist for crying out loud, so what gives?

Before I had kids, I had a prestigious job of running private early education facilities and loved it. I worked hard to put myself through college and grad school while being a full-time teacher’s assistant and then climbed the ladder to Director. It made me feel important and the continuous dialogue with colleagues and peers was mentally stimulating.

So when I embarked on the motherhood journey, I found it exciting and all-encompassing, and I jumped in with both feet the minute my baby was a ball of cells in my womb. My old life, as I knew it, was a distant memory. This continued for a while, but slowly the anxiety coupled with the monotony of the day-to-day began to buzz in my mind like a trapped summer fly in the house. Every day was the same: waking up, making breakfast, packing lunch, school drop off, park times, play dates, snacks, cleaning up, storytimes, building Legos, playing dolls, cooking dinner. The list went on and on of a never-ending schedule and constantly diffusing tantrums. The thoughts of wanting to leave my house, brainstorm with like-minded people, and yearning to be involved in something exciting crept in, and then the guilt began to build.

A terrible feeling of mom guilt sat with me like acid reflux after a fast-food binge. I felt guilty for wanting more. I felt guilty looking for jobs and going on interviews, to only talk myself out of actually taking positions when it came time to assess the childcare logistics; which in turn made me feel even more trapped.

Then one day, after some heavy in-and-exhales, I decided to give myself a mental break. The realization that I can love my kids just as much as a stay at home mom and still have a life outside of them was freeing. Wanting more is okay. Going back to work is okay. Utilizing some of the “ it takes a village” we desperately need to raise our kids is okay.

To all the stay at home moms, who are struggling with staying at home, I get it. You are not alone. We all know that you love your children. We all know you are grateful for your children. We all know there is nothing you love more than your children. With all that, we also know to stay at home is isolating and lonely, so it’s okay if at some point you are ready to do something that isn’t staying at home with the kids.

Hello! My name is Brittany and I am the creator of Mama Bear Britt! I am a child development specialist, former preschool director and mama of two littles. I am working hard to create a place for parents to gather, learn and share. Join my tribe!

We all have that friend (maybe it’s you!) who has held on to their childhood plush or teddy bear throughout her life. It’s stuck around from infancy into teenage years and eventually ended up in her adult home, even if it’s tucked away. Whether it’s gifted from loving grandparents or from Mom or Dad, this beloved item become a symbol of comfort, a friend on adventures and a nostalgic reminder of childhood.

As a parent embarking on these years with your own children, you know the important bond between a child and their forever friend—and so does GUND. Backed by a 120-year-old legacy, GUND was the first ever company to produce a teddy bear in the early 1900s. The iconic brand known for creating premium plush for over a century receives thousands of messages each year from parents reaching out to reclaim lost plushies or to share the love their child has for their soft, cuddly friend.  Who else could better understand the adoration and intense love between a child and their plush, which was shown in their recent commercial (cue the tears).

Now until Nov. 26, Red Tricycle readers can save 15% on orders from GUND by using the code REDTRI at checkout!

Classic characters like Snuffles, GUND’s signature teddy bear with a unique crescent design that lets him look into your eyes with every hug, continues to steal hearts and new additions like Rainbow Sparkles Unicorn and Baby Toothpick Sloth give endless lovable character options for every child. We’ve curated some real life mom hacks that illustrate the important role of your child’s first best friend and exactly why you #gottagettaGUND.

#1: THE BUDDY SYSTEM

Creator behind @VeronaBrit and PR Specialist at a children’s hospital, Veronika Javor has witnessed both personally and professionally how plush can calm and comfort a child, from her own home to the hallways of the hospital.

“Aside from their everyday appearances at the breakfast table, or being used as a pillow during story time, my children’s plush plays a significant role in their lives on the ‘bigger’ occasions. A cuddle before the first day of school, or after a scraped knee. If I know that tears may be coming—like when booster shots roll around—I’ll make sure to pack their favorite plush for them to hold onto. It helps them manage those moments when they need a little bit of extra courage and comfort.”

#2: AMPLE INVENTORY

Ali Budd, mom of two and the principal behind @AliBuddInteriors, a Toronto-based design studio, learned the hard way what happens when a favorite plush is lost. On a recent trip to England, her son’s beloved friend Gordon was misplaced somewhere between arriving at the airport and boarding the plane.

“Children become so attached to their plush that it literally becomes an extension of them. It’s a disaster if it falls apart or in our case, gets lost. The solve: buy multiples! When your child finds the plush they love, make sure to stock up. It’s also important that the item be high quality, so it lasts and can withstand some aggressive hugs.”

#3: HIGH STANDARDS

Once these plush make their appearance, they are here to stay, so it’s important to ensure they are top quality and, of course, cute! GUND’s high-quality materials, textiles and construction, paired with beautiful modern designs, provide longer lasting memories, while also being modern and trendy additions to nursery décor and beyond.

Having recently transformed a nursery into a big girl room for one of her clients, Ali (with her designer hat on) experienced how a beloved plush can be one of the only ‘little kid’ items that graduates to the big kid room. Growing up doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for their plush.

“GUND features modern designs, adorable characters in premium fabrics with incredible attention to detail, making them effortless to incorporate into a styled space. They should be where your child is, whether on their bed or a cozy reading nook.”

Actress Kristen Bell recently shared an Instagram post featuring a situation many of us mamas know all too well—a trip to the ER.

A door vs. kiddo incident (of which the door won) landed Bell’s daughter in Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles’ emergency room with a finger injury that the actress describes as, “Smushed so hard in the door it popped like a jelly donut.”

Along with the pic, Bell gave a heartfelt shout-out to the hospital’s staff, writing, “Thank you so much to @childrensla for the amazing care.” The A-lister added, “Thank u Dr. Olsen, and Sonia our child life specialist.” Bell went on to post, “Did you know that when you enter the emergency room at @childrensla you immediately get a ‘Child Life Specialist’ trained to make sure your child knows what happening? And to make sure you understand all of what’s happening and your choices? It made us feel so safe.”

Even though you can almost see her daughter’s finger in the photo, Bell added, “Ps I’m not attaching a pic of the finger because there was literally burger popping out all over and it as pretty gross.”

While you can’t see Bell’s daughter’s face in the pic (the actress keeps her children’s identities private), the pouts make it clear that no one was having fun. The not-so-happy kiddo got plenty of well wishes from celebs and social media followers alike. Actress Evan Rachel Wood commented on the photo, writing, “Aww buddy! Feel better soon” and actor Justin Long added, “Aw pal- so sorry for her!” And we totally agree!

Think nail polish is just for girls? Think again! Because all kids should have fun, Alpha Kids set out to change the coversation around nail polish, offering the first-ever nail polish for girls and boys. All children are given the creative freedom to use their imagination, experiment with color so leave your stereotypes at the door because we focus on exploration, individuality, and artistry. It is important for girls and boys to be given equal opportunities to imagine, learn, and create.

With my M.A. degree in Early Childhood Development, I have worked for nearly 20 years as a child development specialist and currently run an educational website called Mama Bear Britt. I also work as a child development specialist for Los Angeles County. And as a mom of a girl and a boy, I know the importance of inspiring and encouraging the developing brain, soul, and spirit of her children, thus, The Alpha Kids was born.

Having a bold and fearless daughter first has paved the way for my two-year-old son—who aspires to do everything she does. Because of my educational and professional background, I have always made sure to create a more gender fluid environment, in terms of toys and stimuli. I know that there are more cognitive building skills to be had with open-ended toys, such as blocks, cars, balls, and dolls and that is where the focus is. My kids have had an environment to freely explore and create without all the typical gender biased verbiage, such as “that’s pink, it’s for girls.”

“My daughter enjoys painting her nails here and there, but it’s really my son who absolutely loves to color himself.” I didn’t think much of it until I began to see other little boys who also shared the same passion for color as my son.

Back in 2011 J.Crew posted an ad with Jenna Lyons, the creative director painting her son nails pink. The ad portrayed how she and her son enjoy their weekend quality time and how much fun they have painting their toenails neon pink. Today.com shared this ad titling it “J. Crew Ad Stirs Up Controversy with Pink Nail Polish.” How silly that the color pink for a boy or even nail polish on his toes would cause such a stir. To this little boy, he loved pink, and he loved the color on his toes. Plain and simple. Now more than ever parents today are much more mindful to how our actions, learned stereotypes and behaviors affect our children. It is much more important to encourage play, creativity, and exploration, rather than limit kids on color choices or who can paint their toes.

That is why Alpha Kids is a nail polish for everyone! Girls and boys should feel free to express their individuality in artistic, and colorful ways. Parents can rest assured that they are not harmful, toxic, or harsh for little nails. The Alpha Kid’s polishes are 10-Free, Vegan, & Cruelty-free; as well as handcrafted in small batches and made in the USA. Happy painting!

In case you didn’t know, having a baby is a big deal. Shocking, I know. Pregnancy and childbirth are game-changers and impact a mother emotionally, psychologically and of course physically.

One part of the body that is often affected yet overlooked? The pelvic floor. This is a muscular bowl inside the pelvis that supports the pelvic organs. Like a mom, it has many jobs: As one of the main core muscles of the body, they provide stability, helps start and stop the flow of urine and feces, and play a role in sexual function. And let’s not forget: These muscles also help push a baby out during a vaginal delivery.

Unfortunately, these muscles can be easily injured during childbirth. They can be stretched, cut, or torn. Even if a person has their baby via c-section these muscles just helped support a baby for about 40 weeks. Think of how tired you get after rocking your baby for an hour; these muscles were doing that non-stop! As a result, these muscles can become dysfunctional, just like any other muscle of the body. Pelvic floor dysfunction can lead to a variety of symptoms such as urinary incontinence, back pain, or pain while having sex.

Therefore, it is important to have these muscles in good shape. Keeping these muscles healthy prior to pregnancy can improve their function and help with recovery following delivery. Most people assume that means strengthening. Gotta get these muscles a gym membership and mini barbells, right? Not exactly.

While strengthening can be what is needed, sometimes these muscles are actually in a guarded or tightened position and need to learn to relax. Sometimes the muscles need to learn to have better overall coordination which can help during delivery. Or maybe the muscles are strong but need to improve their endurance. In general, the pelvic floor muscles need to have a good range of motion, coordination, and strength to do their job well.

Every person, and pelvic floor is different. Therefore, it is important to consult a pelvic floor specialist to determine what an appropriate treatment plan would be for you. In many countries, pelvic floor physical therapy is automatically provided postpartum. A pelvic floor PT can address any pelvic floor dysfunction pre- or post-partum and of course help with the recovery process after delivery.

Motherhood can be challenging and it can be difficult to make time for yourself, but in my opinion, getting your pelvic floor working well should be a part of the mom routine.

Rachel Gelman, PT, DPT is a clinician, writer and educator specializing in pelvic floor dysfunction. She teaches the pelvic health curriculum in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Samuel Merritt University and is an expert for INTIMINA, which aims to help improve all aspects of a woman’s intimate health.
