“I totally failed today,” I said through tears to my husband. “I felt like I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off. The house is a mess. We hardly did any homework. Why is there always a huge pile of crap on the stairs that noone brings up? I need a maid just for folding laundry. What kind of mystical people actually get to the steps of folding it and putting away? Where do they live? We need disposable clothes for the children and disposable underwear for you too, while we’re at it! Why do I clean when y’all still live here? What is the point? Tell me…WHAT IS THE POINT?!”

The struggle is real! There are some days where we can totally rock the multitasking super mom role and some days where even a chef, maid and magical fairies couldn’t help us keep our act together.

But you know what? That is okay! I promise you that there is not a single one of your yoga doing, Pinterest-worthy birthday party throwing, organic snack feeding, no dark circles under their eyes Mama’s that have it together all the time.

We all have days where we are so tired from being up all night with a sick kiddo or teething babies, that Netflix has to ask us, “Keep Watching?” Yes Netflix…thanks for checking and making me feel bad. We are still watching episode #25 of Boss Baby!

Every Mom has a day…or every day of the week that she lives in sweats and hides when someone rings her doorbell, lest someone she knows sees her looking like she hasn’t showered in three days. Maybe she hasn’t…don’t judge!

Each Mother around the world has days where they feel like they’ve blown it. We think that the one time we gave our kids goldfish instead of Annie’s naturally colored and flavored GMO-free bunny crackers is what’s gonna cause them to revolt against all healthy food and set the pattern for their dietary habits when they’re in their 30’s.

We are so hard on ourselves, Mama’s. We worry about what people will think of our mess, of our missteps, of our mistakes…but we all make them.

And you are a good Mom.

You adore your children, even if you haven’t gotten to bathe the third one in a few days and maybe febreezed his clothes as he went out the door.
You love that teething baby, even if you wish there was a dye free, all natural permanently numbing form of orajel for those long nights.

You clothe them every single day, to include multiple outfit changes…who do they think they are, celebrities? Who do you think is going to keep up with your five outfit changes a day, little Suzie?!

You keep them fed the best you can and you added a piece of fruit with that bag of goldfish, dang it! Dried fruit…okay it was raisins…chocolate covered ones but whatever.

The point is, sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying. Some days you have to just smile and survive. Some days you will gloriously thrive and others you will need every ounce of grace the good Lord gave you. Guess what your kids will remember?

They’ll remember that you loved them like there was no tomorrow, that you cuddled up next to them on that couch, after 2.5 hours of sleep and desperately tried to follow along with the ridiculous plot of Boss Baby. They’ll remember that when they cried in the middle of the night, because their tummy hurt or their toothies were coming in-you were right there or that you were the fun mommy who decided it was perfectly acceptable to wear their swim shorts all day…in public…because that was the last article of clothing in their drawer!

Give yourself a break Mom or hire a chef, maid and fairy so that you can take one for real!

Baby Trend Alert: Eco-Friendly & Fashionable Diapers

What’s New in Strollers for 2019 (So Far)

We’ve all been there—both as parents and personally (even if we don’t remember it): teething. The crying kiddo, the pain, and the fact that you’d do pretty much anything to stop the insanity. But what about those teething necklaces and bracelets your mom friends rave about? Well…about that.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently issued a statement recently issued a warning to parents and caregivers of young children about how teething jewelry—worn by your cranky baby or the caregiver—can actually be potentially dangerous.

Photo: Alex Smith via Pexels

How can parents soothe teething pain, anyway? Teething gels aren’t a great solution, either; the FDA notes that benzocaine-containing products (such as gels, sprays or ointments) can lead to a potentially life-threatening condition that reduces the red blood cells’ ability to carry oxygen.

If you can’t use a gel or cream, what can you use? It’s this very question that leads plenty of parents to teething jewelry. Often marketed as a safe, “natural” alternative to other products, these items look like necklaces or bracelets are typically made from amber, marble, silicone or wood.

Following reports of serious injuries and tragically, strangulation deaths, the FDA now cautions parents to avoid teething jewelry altogether. If you think that adult supervision will reduce the risks, think again. According to the FDA, a seven-month-old infant choked on a wooden beaded teething bracelet—while under parental supervision. Luckily, the child was okay following a trip to the hospital.

The new warning from the FDA stresses using alternatives to soothe teething pain—and of course, avoiding teething jewelry. Instead, gently massage your baby’s gums with clean fingers. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that you can give your kiddo a firm rubber teething ring (but not the frozen kind). Always inspect the teething ring for damage and supervise your child while they’re gumming it.

Whether you’re attaching it banister to banister or banister to wall, it’s quick to install with the included instructions and requires no drilling to banisters (minimal drilling to the wall side, if you’re going banister to wall). The barrier is retractable (no awkward stepping over it), and it comes in a range of elegant fabrics. It also rolls up like a yoga mat so you can bring it to grandma’s house.

Available at thestairbarrier.com, $129-$169 depending on fabric.

Our little scientists love to throw, bang and knock over their cups, so a leak-proof, spill-proof cup really has to live up to its name. This one does. The NUK Everlast 360 cup (above, $7.99, holds 10 ounces) has a twist-on lid with reinforced double seals. Listen for the click and you’ll know it’s sealed. Designed for babies 3-11 months who can hold their head up, the Hugaboo Baby Seat lets your little one explore their surroundings from a safe seated position. 15 Newborn Must-Haves You’ll Really Use in the First Weeks

As a sleep consultant I still have to overcome hurdles. I don’t want you to think my “sleep” life is perfect or that I never hit “bumps in the road” because guess what… I do!

In fact, just last night my nine-month-old woke up at 9 p.m. screaming. I immediately looked at the video monitor: he was safe, so I let him fuss a little since his screaming went to a dull fuss. After 15 minutes of him crying, I just couldn’t take it any longer.

I went upstairs, did a quick check to ensure he didn’t have a “surprise” for me in his diaper. Felt his forehead (no fever), picked him up, gave him a hug and then left the room. When I left the room the scream was worse than ever before, Still, I let that go because I know my son and I know that once he sees me, he’ll cry harder. He eventually fell back to sleep.

However, all night he tossed and turned and fussed here and there (only a few minutes at a time) and this unfortunately resulted in not a good sleep for me. So yes, these nights do happen to me–but I also know how to handle them.

Today I have been in-tuned to him. Checking his temperature, rubbing his belly, giving him extra snuggles, looking for teeth and yet… nothing!!A part of me wants to blame it on teething, but I truly do not think that is what it is. Since I know quite a bit and how it affects teeth, I thought I would share that with you so if you ever have a night like I did—so you too can rule out teething.

The scary truth about teething…

Teething and sleep problems don’t always translate believe it or not. A lot of parents blame their teething baby or toddler for sleep problems. Well I’m here to burst your bubbles, moms and dads: there has been research showing that teething doesn’t cause long-term sleep disruptions.

Of course, teething does cause pain, but it doesn’t cause consistent symptoms. Symptoms usually start two days prior to the tooth erupting through the gums and is sore about two to three days after it has cut through the gums.

Sometimes, as noted in this article written by Melinda Wenner, teething sleep disruptions only occur on the day that a child’s tooth erupts and one day after. No symptoms regularly occurred i the days “before” the toothed appeared.

So my little guy didn’t wake up with a tooth this morning, nor did it pop through before his afternoon nap. I am guessing that he is “not” teething. This is a good sign, but bad for me because now I’m wondering, “What is wrong with him?” I’m going to chalk it up to just a bad day, or maybe he has a tummy ache or just going through a clingy phase.

However, I may never know—but I know one thing is for sure, teething didn’t cause that middle of the night waking last night. I do know that disruptions in sleep for any reason are normal and should be expected: it’s how I react (or how any parent reacts) to the sleep disruption. I reacted the right way.

If you should you find yourself with a child who is showing obvious signs of teething—a visibly erupting tooth, digestive disturbances, drooling—and who is waking overnight due to the possible discomfort, your best bet is to treat the discomfort however your doctor advises you to. Comfort them and put them down AWAKE!

Even if they protest falling asleep (like my little guy did), once you’ve done what you can to treat, care and comfort them, your child needs to fall back to sleep on their own. If you begin helping them fall asleep like creating a new habit of rocking, nursing or holding to sleep, then they could being wanting the same assistance ever time it’s time for them to fall asleep.

You don’t want to create a bad habit and you are not hurting your child if they protest after you leave their room and you’ve done all you can do. If you make sure to always allow your child to put themselves to sleep, the disruption in sleep resulting from teething will pass quite quickly.

If you instead make “an exception” and begin to assist them again, you will find that once the tooth has erupted and any associated discomfort has passed, that the interrupted sleep will remain and you will have to train your child to fall asleep without your help once again.

By giving my baby the opportunity to fall back asleep on his own, checking on him since he didn’t right away, and since I knew he was okay, I left the room—despite knowing he got more irate, since I didn’t run into him again and react. Eventually, he went back to sleep. Here’s hoping for a better night tonight!
