“Baby Shark” Gets Its Classiest Most Star-Studded Rendition Yet

An Update on That Whole “Baby Shark” Netflix Series

Want to know what the hottest toys trends are this year?  We hightailed it to New York for the 116th Annual Toy Fair in order to get the scoop on the latest and greatest on toys and playtime. From bubble innovation to the best family games, here’s what play looks like in 2019.

The Biggest Trends in Toys

Magnetic Play
While the past decade has introduced us to massive boxes of magentic tiles (how did we live without them?), 2019 builds upon the fundamental shapes by adding animal faces, battery power and wheels, in the form of kits that bring your creation to life. For the preschool-set, we love the new Magformers Animal Jumble ($59.99). Older kids will love the GeoSmart Collection, including the Moon Lander ($52.99).

Nostalgia
1980s and 1990s toy pop culture was evident throughout Toy Fair, from vintage board games, to old school favorites like Lite Brite, Weebles, and Lava lamps. Two new toys that tipped their hat to the 1990s but offered a decidedly  modern twist are the Blockbuster Board Game from Big Potato Games (“The golden age of video rentals is back! Introducing a super-simple party game for anyone who has ever seen a movie”), which will be exclusively at Target in March 2019, and a collection of Spongebob Squarepants toys, including a Giggle Blaster,a weapon that sprays aerosol party string (included) and shouts over 15 SpongeBob phrases and sounds. The Giggle Blaster arrives in the Fall 2019 and retails for $19.99 (PS – Want to feel old? 2019 is Spongebob’s 20th Anniversary!)

Science Experiments
SpongeBob isn’t the only one celebrating an anniversary. The United Nations has declared 2019 the “International Year of the Periodic Table of the Chemical Elements,” and in celebration, Ooze Labs has released a chemistry set that will allow your budding chemist to safely explore 20 different experiments. For younger kids, Learning Resources introduced Beaker Creatures in Fall 2018, offering a science lab with a collectable component. 2019 brings a new Alien Experiment Lab and collectible alien creatures, including Swampoids, and Dogstars.

Real Life Heroes
While superhero toys will never go away, we were happy to see a renewed focus on “real life hero” toys including firemen, policemen and ambulance workers. Both LEGO and Mattel have introduced new action figures and play sets.

Mattel has relaunched Rescue Heroes, a line of collectibles that was popular in late 90s. The goal with the re-launch is to focus on preschoolers to stimulate children’s imagination and sense of adventure without involving violence. The product line will be available exclusively at Walmart stores beginning Summer 2019. It also coincides with a newly launched YouTube series.

LEGO is also focused on celebrating first responders with a  a new police play set in their City series, as well as a fire fighter play set available in a Duplo kit, which is aimed at preschoolers.

Play Sets for Small Spaces

We’re happy to see a slew of play activities for smaller spaces, and Fisher Price welcomed several innovative products perfect for apartments and travel, including an interactive kitchen that is portable and can be folded for storage, and a line of plush pretend sets, including a campfire. Sago expanded on it’s mini role playing sets with new professions including a veterinarian.

Movie Franchises

Though the long-awaited Toy Story 4 movie hasn’t hit theaters yet (May 2019) it hasn’t stopped the behind-the-scenes collaboration with some of our favorite toy makers.  The new LEGO movie is now headed to streaming channels, though kids will be thrilled with keeping the characters alive through a variety of action figures and play sets.

Some of our favorites from Toy Fair include, the LEGO Duplo play set (the first time a movie franchise has extended to Duplo, and the Barbie collaboration with Bo Peep as a super hero.

Nerf Alternatives
Did you know ax-throwing is now a thing? The folks at Zing, makers of cool outdoor kids gear), definitely know it, and have kid-proofed the sport so your little warriors can have fun without doing too much damage. Introducing the Zax, a soft-suction ax for throwing. Zing also has a new line of Hyperstrike bow & arrow products, launching exclusively at Target in May 2019 (other retailers in the Fall).  Designed with bungee cords, these bows can launch arrows up to 250 feet and are good for independent or team play (ages 14+). While Marshmallow shooters have been around for a few years, the The Marshmallow Fun Company is releasing The Jumbow, a large bow that will fire arrows with marshmallow heads (which totally alleviates the marshmallow stuck in barrel problem).

Hedgehogs & Sloths, Oh My!

Unicorns and Llama are so 2017. 2019 is all about Hedgehogs and Sloths, according to Toy Fair insiders. A few that stood out, Spike, the Fine Motor Hedgehog, which was a finalist for Toy of the Year 2019, helps todders 18 months + develop fine motor skills. Tumbling Hedgehog, a STEM experiment kit that allows kids to build their own robotic pet hedgehog will be released in July 2019, and the Fisher Price Smooth Moves Sloth, part of the new Linkimals line,  focuses on baby’s (9 months +)  gross motor development through music and motion by clapping its hands together, bobbing its head and activating music to encourage baby to move and groove along.

Red Tricycle Stand-Outs

Little People, Big Dreams Book Series
With stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, this empowering series celebrates the important life stories of wonderful people  of the world, from designers and artists to scientists, all of them went on to achieve incredible things, yet all of them began life as a little child with a dream. The girls books launched in 2018 to much fanfare.

The first boys books in the popular series featuring Stephen Hawking and Mohammed Ali, were published in February 2019, Bruce Lee and David Bowie are coming later in 2019.

Fisher Price Wonder Makers Design System
Move over Thomas, Fisher Price is unveiling a whole new world of imaginative play and building this Fall. Built in response to consumer demand, the Wonder Maker Design System is gender neutral, a mix of textiles (felt, wood and plastic) and battery free. The Around Town starter kits retail for $39.99 and will be available for Christmas.

Bonus: The label informs consumers that the outer box can be recycled via curbside programs in most communities across the U.S. and the inside plastic bag can be recycled through store drop-off programs that accept plastic film.

What do you think of the Toy Trends for 2019? Share with us in a comment below.

I’ve been a mompreneur for about 16 years—and now it’s payback time. Involving my kids in my business ventures was the best thing I did as a parent, especially since they are older now and recognize the things they learned from living with and having a scrappy entrepreneur as their mom.

My husband and I raised three kids in Lower Manhattan where I launched an espresso bar, a nonprofit educational program for teens and more recently a toy company. I juggled being a mom and an entrepreneur by including my kids in my day to day business activities. Once, I found myself weaving in and out of the wintery streets of Lower Manhattan with my one-year-old in tow in search for the perfect storefront to open an espresso bar.

A few months later, I opened Klatch Espresso Bar and began my journey as a mompreneur. My two teenagers would stop by after school to help at the register and when they were old enough, I hired them as baristas. I discussed marketing strategies and business development ideas with them, but I felt it wasn’t enough. I wasn’t trying to turn them into entrepreneurs, but I wanted to empower them with an entrepreneurial mindset. This made me the unpopular mom. I searched for a summer business camp but couldn’t find one that taught more than the basic lemonade stand model—so I started a business camp for kids.

Teen Entrepreneur Boot Camp launched in Lower Manhattan as a two-week intensive workshop where teens got hands-on business experience writing a business plan for a pop-up espresso bar that would open to the public for two days. Not only did my kids beta-test the workshop, they provided me with valuable feedback as I crafted the program which eventually ended up as a special program at the highly acclaimed Stuyvesant High School in New York City.

Here is why I think kids should learn an entrepreneurial mindset before they head off to college.

An Entrepreneurial Mindset Fosters Curiosity & Critical Thinking Skills

Most kids don’t stop to think about what it takes to launch or operate a business. Teaching them entrepreneurship will open their minds to think about how the world works around them.

An Entrepreneurial Mindset Builds Innovative & Creative Skills

My kids learned about product development and manufacturing when I launched a line of puzzle books for kids called Flip ‘N’ Check. My youngest daughter was my target market and product tester. She gave me feedback on game content, illustrations and most importantly- the fun factor! I reviewed prototypes and book cover designs with the kids and was excited to present them with the final product when a shipment of books would arrive from China. They even created an activity game that ended up in the book. How many kids can make that claim?

An Entrepreneurial Mindset Fosters Encourages Resourcefulness & Problem-Solving Skills

Entrepreneurs are faced with problems and challenges every day and often need to think creatively to troubleshoot a situation. When I discovered a glaring typo in a new shipment of Flip ‘N’ Check Books, I quickly needed a solution because they were about to ship to stores across the country. The mistake was a big deal because Flip ‘N’ Check is an educational product and the word “grammar” was noticeably misspelled. So, I piled my daughter and a good friend into the car and we drove three hours to the warehouse to make the repairs.

We tore open shrink-wrapped books, replaced the misspelled word with a whiteout sticker and re-wrapped all 3,000 books. Two days later we completed the task and the books were ready to ship. My daughter learned that you do whatever it takes to get the job done even if it’s an arduous, menial and challenging task.

An Entrepreneurial Mindset Teaches Sales Skills

When I would exhibit and sell the Flip ‘N’ Check Books at the International Toy Fair in New York City,  I would enlist my daughter to work the booth with me. With thousands of other exhibiting toy vendors, we assembled our booth and prepared to welcome toy buyers from all over the world who would be on the hunt for the next hit product.

The competition was fierce and we all fought for the buyer’s attention with the same end goal: sales. We all will encounter the need to sell something in our lives and could use sales skills to help us achieve our goals.

An Entrepreneurial Mindset Gives Kids Skills to Compete in the Marketplace

Teaching our kids an entrepreneurial mindset can only equip them for the ups and downs they will experience in their lives. My advice to parents who want to take on the role of teaching their kids business smarts is to make the learning experience fun and light. It took a little trickery to keep my kids interested, but I’m glad I did because they just thanked me for it—and that’s a huge win in my book!

I am a serial mompreneur who started a coffee bar, a nonprofit educational program for teens and am currently the founder of Flip 'N' Check, a new way to play dry-erase puzzle books.

Bronies and pony fans, grab your tissues. The upcoming ninth season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic will be the series final journey to Equestria and we are stamping our hooves in disapproval!

The final season will feature past actors Patton Oswalt and Weird Al Yankovich and follows the Mane 6 as they take on their most challenging adventure yet––the retirement of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna and taking the reigns of the entire kingdom. The 26-episode season will begin airing on Saturday, Apr. 6 on Discovery Family and you’ll want to watch the surprisingly moving trailer to see just how emotional this season promises to be!

Before we have to say goodbye to Ponyville forever, Discovery Family will air a weeklong “Pony Palooza” marathon leading up to the season debut. Starting Mar. 30 at 6 a.m., catch up on Equestria Girls, followed by the world premiere of Equestria Girls: Spring Breakdown at 11:30 a.m.

Then grab your popcorn and settle in for a binge watch of episodes from the past eight seasons of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic starting at 6 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 31. Episodes will run during the daytime for the entire week leading up to the final season premiere on Saturday, Apr. 6.

Not to be gone forever, Hasbro announced at the 2019 New Year Toy Fair that a CGI My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic movie is actually in the works and slated for a 2021 release. As far as we’re concerned, it can’t come soon enough!

This Is Every Disney & Marvel Movie Coming Out This Year & There Are a Ton

With the recent release of the third movie in the How to Train Your Dragon series comes news of the How to Train Your Dragon Hatchimal! The dragon-filled interactive hatching egg made its grand debut at the 2019 Toy Fair and is slated to hit stores next fall.

Inside the newest Hatchimal isn’t just any dragon—it’s the film’s adorable animated star: Toothless! Like other Hatchimals, Toothless moves and shakes—and his eyes light up too!—just to let your kiddo know he’s in there.

But that’s where the similarities end. Instead of sweetly rubbing and patting the egg to gently coax the creature out, your child needs to make this dragon mad. That means shaking, tapping and overall agitating Toothless until he hatches. After Toothless emerges from his egg your kiddo can feed him a fish-filled snack, teach him to fly or dive-bomb and watch him use his plasma blast. The dragon also roars or purrs, depends on his current mood.

Reports say the Toothless Hatchimal will retail for $60 and will be available sometime in August 2019.

OMG Narwhal Fingerlings Have Arrived & They Are the Cutest

With The Toy Association’s 116th North American International Toy Fair behind us, it’s time for parents to look to the future of 2019 toy trends. What types of toys are about to end up on your kiddo’s wish list?

According to Ken Seiter, executive vice president of marketing communications at The Toy Association, “Parents and kids today are looking for toys and games that are fun, engaging, and keep them coming back for more, but that also enrich the play value to help build lifelong skills.”

Check out the Toy Association’s picks for types of toys that will accomplish these goals and much more!

Unboxing

The unboxing trend hit hard last year, providing kids with a special “surprise” factor during play-time. The Toy Association’s top trends includes this past favorite—but on a whole new level. Using secret decoders or packaging that doubles as a playset in itself will add to experience, making unboxing a winner in 2019.

Compound Craziness

Yet another last year-turned this year pick, compounds are still in. Slime, kinetic sand, dough, putty and other similar open-ended (and awesomely experiential) toys are hot in 2019. But that’s not all. This year you’ll find compounds combining with unboxing toys for a hide-and-seek style, dig-through hunt type of toy.

Throwback Toys

Everything old is new again. Nostalgia is big in 2019. Look for toys from your own childhood or play picks your parents may have made back in the day.

Foodie Fun

Fab foodie finds are making their way into the top toy trends of the year. Whether you want your tot to learn about nutrition, responsibly sourced food or another food-related idea, you’ll find it in the toy aisle. This year will also bring plenty of food-scented selections, ranging from fun fruity smells to not-so-nice gross-out odors.

Inspirational Play

What does your child want to be when they grow up? Toys in this hot category will help them to explore their decisions. Along with inspiring your kiddo to reach their dreams, these toys also teach STEAM concepts as they help to nurture your little one’s natural sense of curiosity.

Even More Entertainment Tie-Ins

With a slew of sequels and live-action reboots in the kid-focused film arena, 2019’s top toy trends include plenty of licensed games and other products. Favorite characters from Toy Story 4, The Lion King and other highly anticipated flicks will make their way into plushes, playsets and much more.

When it comes to toys in 2019, one thing is clear—your kiddo is going to want absolutely everything! And with so many imaginative, educational, inspirational and just plan amazing toys available, why wouldn’t they?
