Bonus: leftovers are perfect for breakfast.

Let these guys cool off before you enjoy them as the banana will be hot!

13 Campfire Recipes That Even Kids Will Love

The Best Camping Games to Try This Summer

Everything You Need to Know Before Your Next Camping Trip

When you are breastfeeding, it’s so easy to become focused on ensuring your little one gets enough to eat, that you forget about yourself. In order to produce breastmilk, you need to make sure you are consuming enough healthy food (plus snacks) and drinking plenty of water too.

It’s common to feel really thirsty and hungry as soon as your baby latches on. So why not get into the habit of grabbing your water bottle and a healthy snack before you sit down to feed?

1. Lactation cookies

Sure, their milk-making benefits may not be scientifically proven, but lactation cookies have been used for generations with great results (and they taste fantastic). The ingredient you will need to hunt down from the health food shop is brewer’s yeast, which is meant to help boost your milk production. Try one of our recipes in the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge recipe hub. The best part is you don’t need to share them with anyone else because if you write ‘lactation cookies’ and label the container most people will think they contain your breast milk and will steer clear!!

3. Smoothies

Blend up your favorite fruits, some veggies, and some yogurt to add some creaminess if that’s your thing. Not only will you be enjoying a healthy snack but you also can throw in milk boosting ingredients to help bub as well.

Bonus: Next time you make your morning smoothie, make double and use the extra to pour into popsicle molds and freeze.

4. Fruit, Nuts, and Chocolate

What a combo! There are lots of ways to do this. You could slice up an apple or pear, and spread with 100-percent nut spread such as peanut butter or almond butter and top with a few dark choc chips. Or you could take some small chunks of banana or whole cherries and dip them in melted dark chocolate and sprinkle with LSA or coconut.

5. Popcorn Trail Mix

Make a healthy mixture of air-popped popcorn, whole nuts, chopped dried apricots, and coconut chips. Store in individual serves and enjoy anytime.

6. Homemade Dip

Get your food processor out and go to town by making two or three healthy dips to store in the fridge. Try our hummus, tzatziki or beetroot recipes available in the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge. Then choose your dippers – brown rice crackers, carrot or celery sticks, or rice cakes.

7. Bliss Balls

It’s like these were invented for hungry, tired moms holding a baby. They keep really well in the fridge or freezer too, so you can grab a snack anytime hunger strikes. Check out our favorite Almond and Date Protein Bliss Balls.

8. Coconut Date Delight

Here is a great fix for a sweet craving, from The Healthy Mommy. An easy to prepare and healthy snack with the sweetness of dates and goodness of nuts and coconut.

Ingredients (Makes one serving):

  • 3 Medjool dates, fresh
  • 1 tablespoon pistachios, unsalted
  • 1 tablespoon walnuts
  • 1 teaspoon shredded coconut

Instructions:

  1. Cut dates in half and remove pits. Roughly chop pistachios and walnuts and combine.
  2. Fill each date half with nut mixture, sprinkle with coconut and serve.

We all know getting out the door with little kids underfoot is an endeavor on an ordinary day. Preparing for a ski day with four kids under six, however, calls for a whole new level of parenting dexterity—and especially the determination to push through the craziness.

Getting my family geared up, outside and onto the ski slope is a whole lot of journey for a (thankfully) incredible mountainside destination. When I get bogged down in the process and wonder, “Is it really worth it?”

I just tell myself, “Yes” and keep moving through the steps. Any of these sound familiar? (Number 21, anyone?)

  1. Wake up and rejoice that it’s Saturday—my day to sleep in!
  2. Roll over and realize that it’s a ski weekend, so I do actually have to get up.
  3. Dish up and eat somewhere between 6 and 12 bowls of cereal.
  4. Brush six sets of teeth.
  5. Explain to my four-year-old that, no, she can’t stay by herself while the rest of the family goes skiing. And yes, that means get ready now.
  6. Make a note to invite friends along whose kids will motivate mine to ski.
  7. Turn thermals right-side out and squint at rubbed-off labels to decipher whose is whose.
  8. Search high and low for missing mittens, only to discover 10 minutes later that they are already clipped onto my son’s jacket.
  9. Pack peanut butter and jelly sandwiches into jacket pockets, knowing they will inevitably get squished and that you will end up eating them while the kids dig M&Ms out of your trail mix.
  10. Stock pockets with Kleenex and granola bars.
  11. There are too many bodies and too much gear around, so send husband ahead to take your toddler to daycare at the mountain, drop off skis and poles by the lodge and pick up lift tickets.
  12. Smear on sunscreen and Chapstick so no one looks like Rudolph at the end of the day.
  13. Convince kids to use the bathroom before climbing into snow bibs.
  14. Throw ski socks in the dryer after they get wet while washing hands.
  15. Shove kids’ feet into boots. Adjust buckles at least three times because they are too tight, too loose and lopsided.
  16. Stretch goggles over helmets without flinging them across the room.
  17. When husband returns, tuck ski passes into jacket pockets and pray they stay there.
  18. Zip up jackets for those who mitten-clad hands leave them helpless.
  19. Take off neck warmers because now they are too hot. Tuck them into your ski jacket because of course they will get cold later. Throw in an extra thermal top just in case.
  20. Send the kids outside to cool off while you take 60 seconds tops to use the bathroom and gear up.
  21. Open the door to discover your kids are sopping wet from stomping and digging around in two feet of snow.
  22. Take off your layers as now you are overheating. Strip off the kids’ wet bibs, socks and mittens and put into the dryer. Dump clumps of snow out of boots.
  23. Establish new rule: no playing in the snow.
  24. Feel like a grinch. Update rule: Make sure the elastic on your snow pants is covering your boots so the snow can’t get in.
  25. “I’m hungry!” How is it already snack time?
  26. Pray for patience.
  27. Brush teeth again.
  28. Potty checks again.
  29. Suit up again.
  30. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that skiing is a life skill and the fresh air will do everyone good.

And, hopefully, someday you will enjoy glorious ski vacations with your future grandkids because of the craziness you push through today—even if today only amounts to one run.

If you think hiking has to mean loading up the car, driving out to the wilderness and shlepping a day’s worth of supplies around on your back, we’ve got a happy news for you: The only thing you really need for a hike is your own two feet and your explorers cap. From urban to suburban, we’ve found easy ways to take an epic hike without ever leaving your own neighborhood. Read on for our tips.

Get a Map
Pick up a good old fashioned paper kind (drugstores, gas stations or libraries usually carry them), or if you can’t track one down, print one from the internet. Place a big star where you live and start studying possible routes. Nope, looking at your phone while you walk doesn’t count!

Decide on a Distance
Do you want to conquer a mile or two or simply circle a few blocks? This is a great time to teach you little trekkers about map scale. Using a piece of string marked off with the map’s scaled distance is an easy way to figure out how far you can go.

Plot Some Points of Interest
Choose three nearby destinations that will be fun to find, from a colorful mural to an extra-tall slide to decades old landmark tree. Mark those spots on your map using fun shapes or colors. Make a key so you remember which destinations are which!

Create Trail Markers
Who knows, this hike may just go down in history. Or at least it will be so fun that you’ll want to retrace your steps at another time. Make your route official by placing trail markers along the way.  The best markers are made with items found in nature (so you aren’t branded a litter bug). We suggest brightly painted pinecones or recognizable stick sculptures hung from twine.

Pack Some Snacks
It’s a proven fact: Food just tastes better after a little exploration. Plus, half the fun of hiking is that you have everything you need on your back, so there’s no need to make pit stops back at home mid-hike. Here is a tasty trail mix recipe that will provide plenty of energy for the hike ahead. Don’t forget a water bottle!

Invite a Friend
Sure, solo hiking has it’s perks (see Wild) but it can also get lonely (See Wild), so invite a friend to tackle your rout with you. Kids can get get their first experience with arguing over directions.

Ready, Set, Hike!
Lace or velcro up your comfy shoes and set out. Bring along a camera or a trail journal to document your finds, and remember the rules of the trail: Always give a friendly hello to fellow hikers that you pass and leave only footsteps, take only memories. Happy hiking!
