A Scottish mom unboxed her government-provided baby box on social media, and it really highlights how countries like the U.S. completely fail to support moms

It’s really no secret that new moms in the U.S. get way less support than in many other countries in the world. We’re the only developed country in the world that doesn’t mandate paid parental leave. Other countries with similar GDP to the U.S. contribute around $14,000 per child per year toward subsidizing childcare, while in the U.S., we only spend around $500, leaving the rest of the burden on parents. And in case you needed another reason to throw your hands up in frustration, a Scottish mom unboxed the baby box she (and all other moms in her country) received for free from the government, and it really shines a light on how much more could—and should—be done for expecting parents everywhere.

Every family in Scotland is entitled to this baby box when they’re expecting a new arrival, the mom in the video explains, as she unboxes a package covered in fun designs that are ready to be colored. It’s made that way so that if you have older kids, they can color the box to help prepare it for their new younger sibling. Or, in this mom’s case, she’s planning to color it herself as a relaxing activity during the final weeks of her pregnancy.

After opening the box, she starts sharing everything that comes inside, for free, compliments of the Scottish government.

“Inside is an envelope on how to breastfeed… some maternity pads and breast pads, a gorgeous play mat, which is absolutely massive… a tummy time book…a teething toy, a thermometer, a bath and room thermometer, some essential bits like a sponge and some nail files for your baby.”

The box also includes a cute baby blanket with a plush giraffe head on the corner, a travel changing mat, a baby-carrying wrap, and tons of gender-neutral clothes and pajamas in different sizes up to six months. After showing off the accessories, which included hats, bibs, mittens, and socks, the mom shared that the box also included condoms, because why not. Oh, and a hooded towel, blankets, sheets, and a mattress to fit inside the box, because it’s made to be used as your baby’s first bed.

Oh yeah, and did we mention all of this is free? For every new mom? I know we did, but just wanted to point it out one more time. As tons of the comments on the video mentions, baby boxes in the U.S. include things like “thoughts and prayers,” “get back to work in three days,” and “a $13,000 hospital bill.”

Sigh. It’s just another reminder of how much more we could do to support women and families if we just prioritized them the way other countries do. So here’s your friendly reminder to vote for politicians who believe that moms and families deserve more.

It’s no secret that a mobile baby is a busy baby, and a busy baby is a happy baby. But if the crawling, creeping and scooting hasn’t yet begun, there are still plenty of ways to engage with your little one—and have a little fun yourself. Here are our favorite ideas for infant games you can play with your stationary sweetie.

1. Bubble Blowout

Something about the rainbow swirls and fanciful movements are endlessly alluring for babies and grown-ups alike. An inexpensive bottle of bubbles—or the homemade variety, if you prefer—will keep your mini-me fixated and, depending on age, may allow your child to exercise hand-eye coordination, too, as he tries to grasp at the floating orbs.

2. Song Sesh

There are plenty of studies showing that babies recognize and respond to human voices—especially their mama—but did you know that researchers have found that babies can hear and remember music even while in the womb? And that they enjoy concerts as much as their parents? It’s no surprise, then, that songs (especially when sung by mom!) are a sure thing when it comes to entertaining your wee one.

While lullabies are great for setting the mood for bedtime, more upbeat tempos are better at keeping baby amused during wakeful hours. To really capture your little one’s attention, choose interactive songs that include motions or silly sounds. (Think: sneezing, animal sounds, or surprise responses, like “peek-a-boo!”) Make up the lyrics as you go, or stick with tried-and-true classics like “Wheels on the Bus” or “Itsy Bitsy Spider.”

3. Fancy Footwork

Babies who haven’t mastered the art of being on the move just yet still do plenty of kicking and squirming. Keep your squirmy worm endlessly entertained by tying a helium balloon to their foot. Your baby will love watching the colorful balloon bounce above them in response to their movements, and you’ll love watching this newfound excitement.

4. Head Outdoors

Let’s be real. There’s only so much excitement that can happen indoors. A simple change of scenery can do wonders in keeping a non-mobile baby entertained, and getting outside your usual four walls into the fresh air and sunshine can soothe even the crankiest infant. Get in a few minutes of tummy time by positioning baby on the edge of a blanket to explore the grass. Or simply lay back together and watch the leaves swaying peacefully in the wind or the clouds floating by.

5. Master Mimicry

While the jury is still out on how early babies can mimic adult gestures, expressions, and sounds, what we do know is that infants benefit from intentional face-to-face interaction at every age. Bond with your baby by focusing on maintaining eye-to-eye contact (that means putting that distracting smartphone aside!) and exchanging facial expressions, such as sticking out your tongue, wrinkling your nose, or showing various emotions, from surprise to sadness. These interactions will not only result in cognitive benefits for baby, but you’ll both enjoy the intentional one-on-one time.

Related: 10 Games to Encourage Baby’s First Words

6. Picture Perfect

If you’ve had your fill of reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear for the day, give baby a mini art tour through your own home. Carry baby around and show them the photographs or paintings that grace your walls. If you have family pictures or portraits, tell baby about the people in the photo. If abstract art is more your thing, point out the colors and shapes.

7. Hands On

There’s a reason why simple games like “This Little Piggie” elicit baby smiles and giggles over and over again. Combining the cadence of rhymes with physical interaction is a guaranteed win when it comes to keeping little ones amused. Our favorites include actions that point to baby’s body parts (eyes, nose, fingers, feet, tummy), and offer a gentle tickle where appropriate. If you need a refresher course on rhymes, a simple Google search for “action rhymes for babies” will offer lots of inspiration.

In a TikTok video, a pediatric physical therapist explains why “tummy time” isn’t really a thing in other countries—but why it’s still important

Tummy time, the practice of placing your infant on their stomach to play, is a very common part of raising a baby in the U.S. But apparently, in the rest of the world, it’s not. Recently, an American mom who gave birth in France went viral for a video of a French pediatrician telling her not to do tummy time, causing moms everywhere to stress about what’s actually best for their babies’ development.

“I had multiple professionals being like, ‘You shouldn’t be putting your baby in uncomfortable positions especially if they’re not already getting themselves into that position,'” the American mom in France said in one video. “If they’re rolling over onto their tummy, that’s one thing, but putting them in positions that they aren’t able to get into naturally is developmentally inappropriate.”

@pattilynn13

But that’s not the standard advice in the U.S., and a pediatric physical therapist made a video response to explain why medical advice for infants is so different in France—and why tummy time is still very important, despite that one doctor’s guidance.

Dr. Bonnie Soto explained that the guidance varies because tummy time is all about helping your baby build muscle, but it isn’t the only way to do that.

“If you live here in the United States, if you’ve been around my page for a while, you know that tummy time is a big thing and it is important, but I don’t think in the way that people understand,” she said.

Dr. Soto explained that when we used to put babies to sleep on their stomachs, they got plenty of tummy time naturally, right after waking up from each period of sleep throughout the day. But once we learned it was dangerous to let babies sleep on their stomachs, she said, parents overcompensated and started being afraid to put their babies on their stomachs at all. That’s when pediatricians started recommending “tummy time” for play. But once again, parents overcorrected.

“I think parents get really stressed out about it,” she said. “Then it becomes this big to-do, like, ‘Oh my god—I have to fit tummy time in,’ and parents are being told things like your baby has to do an hour of tummy time a day. Oh my gosh, that’s crazy.”

Dr. Soto explained that the goal of pediatricians’ recommendations is not to get parents to fit in a regimented 30 minutes of tummy time every day. It’s to get them to give their babies lots of attention, care, and variety to help their bodies grow and develop.

“Roll into tummy time after a diaper change for a few minutes and you can sit and chit-chat with them,” she said. “Your baby needs to snuggle you on your chest and take a nap, take a contact nap, get in the baby carrier, or just lay there and chit-chat in your face as you’re leaning back. Those are all part of a tummy time program.”

She continued, “Your baby needs free, unrestricted movement. They need connection with you. You just holding your baby, snuggling them, moving them around in different positions is good for their development.”

So there you have it. Don’t ditch tummy time, but don’t treat it as a hard and fast rule, either. The important thing is to help your baby move as much as you can, so they can keep building strength all over their bodies.

These books for newborns are the perfect excuse for snuggle time

It’s never too early to expose kids to reading, but if you’ve wondered, “what can I read to my newborn?” you’re not alone. Rest assured, reading to infants is rewarding for parents and children alike. Books can be a touch point for important baby milestones, like first smiles, and the calming sound of a parent’s voice during story time helps to foster a positive association with books. The foundation for vocabulary and fine motor skills is laid. Plus: it’s just plain fun!

The non-profit, Zero to Three, advises parents to give newborns books that they can explore with all of their senses, including books they chew on, books that make noise or have different textures, and chunky books that are easier to grab. They also suggest taking breaks when you notice your baby showing signs of boredom like looking away, crying, or arching their back. So the next time you need a quiet activity with baby, pull out one of our favorite books for newborns, and remember to keep them around for years to boost all those skills as your little ones grow.

We love finger painting ideas for kids like this one that’s non-toxic and safe for babies

Make your own non-toxic paint and you’ll be less worried about your kids putting it in their mouth. This easy recipe comes together with three ingredients you probably already have at home. Follow these simple step-by-step instructions for making edible finger paint for babies and older kids, and you’ll be making art in no time.

stock

Warning: While this recipe isn't made with toxic ingredients, it does contain raw flour, which the U.S. Food & Drug Administration warns against eating. Keep a watchful eye on your child and a wet washcloth handy to clean off hands as you paint.

Save this recipe for edible baby finger paints.

Supplies You'll Need

1. Mix the flour and water together.

stock

Use warm water to help the mixture come together more easily. We used a whisk to get all of the lumps out. If you have older kids, this is a good step for them to help with.

2. Divide the flour and water mixture.

stock

Pour the mixture into four bowls, cups or containers of your choice.

3. Add food coloring to each container.

We stuck with the basics, making our paints red, blue, green and yellow. That way we could talk about color mixing as we played, showing how red + yellow = orange and blue + red = purple.

stock

Pro tip: We used only three drops of food coloring for each small bowl and still ended up with bright colors. If you go overboard with the food coloring, you may end up staining your fingers. But we promise it will wash off eventually!

4. Let your baby get creative!

stock

Our little tester isn't sitting up on his own yet, so we made this a tummy-time activity. You can use any type of paper, but we like finger-painting paper (like this one from Melissa & Doug). It's glossy and non-absorbent, which helps the paint spread easily across it.

stock

Pro tip: Let your baby paint in the high chair (as long as it's easy to clean), lay down a waterproof splat mat, or make this an outdoor activity to keep mess and cleanup to a minimum.

stock

Post-painting clean-up: Set out your artwork to dry, and be prepared to give your baby a bath after your art session. The flour-water mixture should wash out of clothes and off of floors, splat mats, etc., but it's easiest to clean up with warm water right away. Happy finger painting!

4. Classical Music for Kids

Sure, the “Mozart Effect”—the belief that babies exposed to classical music will have higher IQs—has never been scientifically supported, but it still feels good to switch off the Baby Shark in lieu of some Flight of the Bumblebee now and then, right?

11. Toybox

12. Guitar Lullabies

Guitar lovers, get excited! This playlist features 160 sweet instrumental lullabies that are all performed exclusively on the popular instrument. Trust us, the riffs in ”This Old Man,” “London Bridge,” and “Do Re Mi” just hit differently on the strings of an acoustic guitar.
