This getaway spot has a history that is 130 years rich and is situated in tranquil woods 90 miles northwest of Chicago in Delavan, Wisconsin. Evidence of the land’s Native American beginnings can be seen in the property’s 40 remaining effigy mounds, the largest collection in southern Wisconsin. It was also once the longtime headquarters of the largest traveling circus of its day, Mabie Brothers US Olympic Circus.
A great time to plan a Lake Lawn Resort adventure is in the winter for all of their winter fun activities. Take the kids sledding down the Rudy Lange Sledding Hill or go explore a historic site or museum and learn something new.
No matter when you make your way north, there are plenty of activities to keep this vacation from heading south. Who says that trampoline parks need to be for kids only? Catapult Adventure Park offers 18 different experiences and some not for the faint of heart. Each one has its own intriguing name like the Launch Zone, Tube-Topia, Strobe Zone, The Paw Pit and Giant Cat Tree. Who know what kind of challenges you and your better half will face with names like that. After all of that running, climbing and jumping around, you’ll need a full snack bar to refuel. They’ve got what you need there, serving up pizzas, wings, cheesy bread sticks, Cinnabon rolls, cookies, brownies and more.
Just waking up after many months of closure due to Covid, Everett Improv encourages you to get off the couch and challenge yourself in front of a crowd. Although the 50% off alcohol sales might be enough some couples to try out Everett Improv's Happy Hour, it's really not about the drinks. Held each Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., this happy hour is all about playing ridiculous games for the sake of playing them and learning a few things too. This venue also offers more traditional courses all year long as well.
Because nothing says "I love you" like a little head-to-head axe throwing competition, you've got every reason to plan your next date night at this Seattle hot spot. Come as a pair or bring your besties to experience a date night that's not easily classified. Book a private lane if you've got a big group or plan to share if it's just the two of you. Then come prepared to learn the ropes from a certified coach who will walk you through how to throw the axe and score the game. Closed-toed shoes are a must to play, but the buffalo plaid is optional. Outside food is a welcomed addition here, but you can also opt for low-key snacks they sell on-site. Blade & Timber became the first axe throwing venue in the state of Washington approved to serve beer, but don't go crazy. Guests are limited to two beers while throwing axes.
Random fact: a "flatstick" is slang for a golf putter. At Flatstick + Pub, couples can combine one of America’s favorite activities with a bar. Each Flatstick Pub location has a similar look and feel highlighting the art of local artist, Ryan ‘Henry’ Ward. But each offers a unique and completely different experience. Expect to find a highly creative nine-hole course with various “water hazards” and obstacles to avoid like beer kegs or whimsical creatures. Ready for a date night bonus? Flatstick Pub is also home to the original Duffleboard, a tabletop version of mini golf. This twist on the game was created by the owners of the pub and requires a special handheld putter. This game is just as simple and can be played by people of all skill levels. Score!
Insider Tip: All Flatstick locations offer beer, wine, cider and soft drinks and will most certainly offer a good time. However, if you'd like to enjoy a meal with your game, the South Lake Union location is the best choice as it features a restaurant overseen by Ethan Stowell Restaurants featuring brick oven pizzas and pub classics such as chicken wings, jalapeño poppers and fried mushrooms.
Remember when roller skating was cool? It still is at Pattison's West. Only now you can hang out with the cool kids during Adult Skate Nights. If it has been a while since you last laced up a pair skates, you'll be surprised to see how much things have changed. One of the highest regarded skating rinks in America, Pattison’s West features a state-of-the-art music sound system, LED lighting and a super smooth maplewood rotunda skate floor. The first Saturday of every night is set aside for Sip & Skate Nights featuring what Pattison's calls "an adult variety of music and adult beverages" (beer and wine) giving a new meaning to "snack bar." Have a fun date night and help protect sea life at the same time. That is the goal of Ocean5. Named after the five great oceans of the earth, this entertainment hub goes above and beyond bringing sustainable practices to the entertainment industry, including decorating with carpets made from recycled fishing nets and using locally sourced and reused building materials. However, they know that having fun is just as important. Laser Tag is a really big deal here. Ocean5 features a two-story laser tag arena that can accommodate up to 40 people per game. (Not that you would bring 38 people on your date night, but it's nice to know that you could.) They offer both regular 10 Pin Bowling as well as Duckpin where everything is the same but smaller. Psst! Fans of the sport think it's twice the fun. The game room here also features over 50 classic games and after 10 p.m., it’s adults only.

This place features every kind of board or role-playing game you can imagine. Simply check them out from their library for free while dining in their full-service restaurant or enjoying drinks in the bar or a simple dessert for two. And if you fall in love with the game, you can purchase it in their retail store. Just remember, the one who wins the game has to put everything back in the box like you found it.

Founded by beloved Seattle restaurateur Tom Douglas (who sometimes shows up to teach a class), Hot Stove offers the freshest, fun and most downright delicious cooking classes this side of Le Cordon Bleu, at a fraction of the price. Classes such as Potsticker Love with Hsiao-Ching and Knife Skills will bring your cooking game up a notch, but we’re partial to the classes that let you snuggle up with your favorite adult while you cook. Along with classes like Wine Press and Tom Douglas’ World Famous Triple Coconut Cream Pie, you really can’t go wrong planning the perfect date night with Hot Stove Society.

As if you needed yet another reason to get out and enjoy Seattle's spelndid scenery, the folks at Cycle Saloon have found one for you. This crazy contraption seats 16 guests who peddle around the streets of Ballard on various pub crawls or brewery tours. It will surely make your kids jealous, but tough nuggets kiddos, parents need their exercise. Despite its name, riders don’t actually drink and drive (drinking on the bike is the same as drinking in public and carries all the same consequences under the law). But during this excursion, you don’t have worry about driving at all. That's because each oversized bike comes with its own driver. There are five pedaling seats on each side of the vehicle, a bench in the back that seats three non-pedaling guests and one standing spot in the middle for what they've deemed for the “dancer.” And guess what? You can bring any food and non-alcoholic beverages aboard as well. You can book individually or as a group. Just remember...all riders must at least 21 years of age and all peddlers need to be at least 5’3”.
Insider Tip: The company also operates the Cycle Saloon Pontoon which operates with the same principle on water taking you around South Lake Union. Although dubbed the "booze cruise,” the pontoon doesn’t make any stops for liquor during its 1.5 hour tour. Even so, you still must be 21 to hop aboard.
Head to Solvang, CA and have one of the best weekends with your family experiencing all things Denmark without leaving the country
Solvang (aka the “Danish Capital of America”) has a lot more going for it than windmills and waitresses in dirndls. While the town has lots of fun kitschy charm worth checking out, there are also plenty of modern, swoon-worthy restaurants, boutique hotels, tucked-away tasting rooms, along with hidden gems the kids will love uncovering. Whether you head up to Solvang for a day trip from LA or have the opportunity to spend a day or two (or more), Solvang is a must stop for any family looking for off-the-beaten-path fun.
The entrance to the park is through a fairy tale-esque “castle” archway but most notably, HCA Park has tons of great features like a nice walking trail that begins near the park’s entrance to the right (about where the Vinland Hotel is located—in fact, some of the Vinland’s rooms overlook the park). HCA Park has a newer, modern playground structure which is often way less populated than Sunny Fields Park, an awesome skate park, free municipal tennis courts that were recently resurfaced, and brand new pickleball courts. There are also secluded wooded picnic BBQ areas and loads of nature areas to explore.
Good to Know: Like all nature spots around California, mountain lions and bobcats are known to frequent the park, so it’s best to stay alert—and of course, also beware of rattlers (in season) and poison oak (always!).
Hop aboard this old-fashioned streetcar (but modernized thanks to its new electric motor) for a 25-minute tour of the town's most popular landmarks. Along the way, your guide (dressed in traditional Danish garb) will regale you with fun facts and local lore. We don't want to give too much away, but be prepared to discover the town's one authentic thatched roof and the meaning behind those wooden storks perched atop many of the local buildings.

Just outside of town you'll find this Danish-inspired playground complete with a Viking ship, windmill, and mini gingerbread house. Of course, there are also the requisite swings, slides, and climbing structures that kids love. Added bonus? Bathrooms are typically very clean just in case your little one needs a potty break on the way in or out of town.
There are loads of places to taste wine in town but this is the only one we found with outdoor games for the kids to play. While this tasting room opened in 2018, Dana Volk, the owner and winemaker behind the label, has been in the industry since 1996. Part of the growing movement of women winemakers (the number of women winemakers is particularly high in the Santa Barbara county region), Dana proves that you can marry your passion with your lifestyle (aka kids and family). Dana V. Wines is the direct (and delicious) result of that effort.
Owned by local dads, this adorable boutique offers unique toys, books, and gifts for babies and kids, along with gently (as in barely) worn clothes on consignment. Tucked inside one of Solvang’s most famous windmills, it's an under-the-radar local favorite featuring finds that are both whimsical, well-made, and socially conscious (like one of our fave discoveries the Women's March Puzzle). Just a warning: You won't be able to leave empty-handed.
Kids will go cuckoo for this shop featuring cuckoo clocks galore. There are traditional, hand-carved wooded clocks with elaborate scenes, along with cute, tail-wagging cat clocks. If you can't manage to time your visit on the hour (who can blame you?), not to worry. Friendly shop workers can manually adjust the clocks to chime for kids.
The tiny museum is a hidden gem, and is located upstairs in the independently-run bookstore. It's an intimate space that details the life and the legacy of Denmark's most famous author (The Ugly Duckling, The Princess and the Pea and The Little Mermaid to name a few) with knick-knacks and childhood home replicas—even your littlest ones will be delighted by all the exhibition pieces. Once you're finished with the museum portion, spend some time exploring all the wonderful used and antique books on the same floor.
For anyone with a love of housewares, home decor, and gifts, this store is a must-stop for the best in Danish design (so beautiful and functional). Kids can get in on the retail action by checking out the clever toys. Not only do they claim the largest selection of Hoptimist in the US, but there are some LEGO sets here and the cutest stuffed animals that might have you lifting any purchase bans of soft loveys. And don't miss the adorable wall of clogs made in teeny-tiny kids' sizes.
Sit outside on the large patio and enjoy food that's fresh from local farms, ranches, and coastal waters, sure to please both “big” and “little” kids. Chef/owner Michael Cherney helms the craft-food eatery, relying on his serious restaurant industry résumé—with time spent in Michelin-starred kitchens in Los Angeles, at Ortolan, and in Las Vegas, at L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon—to turn out signature lunch or dinner items like seasonally-shifting grilled cheese creations, Instagram-famous sandwiches such as their Solvang Hot Chicken, or smash burgers (including a kid-sized version), straight-from-the-farm-stand salads, and family-friendly soups which utilize local, seasonal crops. Can't-miss desserts include house-made ice cream, plus freshly-baked cookies and a family-favorite frozen lime pie.
Stop by the register to order your meal before taking a seat (don't worry about the long line—it moves quickly!) at this sweet breakfast joint that offers a full breakfast menu that is sure to delight everyone in the family including gluten-free waffles that are all the rage. Other favorites? Breakfast burritos with a tater tot surprise, veggie omelets stuffed with vegetables, and for the kids? Banana Nutella pancakes of course.
Almost as famous as the windmills within the town's limits, this breakfast hotspot fills up fast. If you don't get there by 8 a.m., expect to wait for your Danish pancake fix—thin pancakes served with whip cream and fresh fruit. The kids will like the chocolate chip pancakes (what's not to love about that) and you'll love that the coffee is strong and refilled regularly.
This Solvang-staple coffee shop is the place to go for your morning joe, your afternoon pick-me-up, or honestly, everything in between. The coffee is roasted locally and the baked goods are organic with vegan and lots of gluten-free options.
Don't miss out on the superfood lattes. The turmeric was a cup of cozy with a snappy finish thanks to the ginger and cinnamon. Definitely worth the stop and be prepared to linger—the cool Nordic vibes coupled with the local staff’s warmth make it hard to leave.

The Danish Mill Bakery, one of Solvang’s “fab five” Danish bakeries, has fun animatronic bakers in the front window, along with a life-size animatronic baker inside the restaurant who gives this whole little speech. Trust us, it's fun and not creepy. Treat yourself to their aebleskiver (similar to doughnut holes), chocolates, pastries, breads, and one of our favorites—Napolean's Hats.

Wood accents, muted colors, and tactile fabrics all layered together in that enviably effortless, hygge way that transports you directly to Denmark without ever leaving the country. The lobby sets the tone for an entirely welcoming atmosphere while the outdoor seating area, complete with fire pits, makes sitting outside a comfortable treat day or night. Solvang Farmer Pumpkin Patch: This event occurs Sept.-Oct. and features a corn maze, pumpkin patch, and fresh-made kettle corn.
Scarecrow Fest: From Oct. 1-31, more than 100 scarecrows will populate the Santa Ynez Valley. Can you find them all?
Solvang Julefest: For more than a month each holiday season (Nov. 26, 2022-Jan. 6, 2023), Solvang turns into one of the most "Christmas-y" towns in America.

Here in Chicago, Halloween seems to last the entire month of October, and for many that makes it the most wonderful time of the year. And considering how questionable fall weather can be, it gives everyone the chance to get in on the fun. If one parade or trick-or-treating event gets cancelled due to weather, you have several more to choose from.

Navy Pier will once again transform into an experiential fall spectacle with nearly 1,000 pumpkins for the month of October. Guests will explore a variety of pumpkin pop-up installations and enjoy Pier-wide deals and other Halloween festivities throughout the month.

Six Flags Great America Fright Fest
Go early to admire the Halloween decorations and seasonal menu items. Stay for the rides, live shows, the Monster Bash (an interactive Halloween party for tiny goblins), and the trick-or-treating on Saturdays and Sundays. But make your way to the exit at 5:45pm when The Uprising Parade: Nightly Call of the Dead begins. This is the cue for kids 13 and under to make their way to the park exit or dare to be scared. Fright Fest includes four different haunted houses and four different scare zones, where you can expect to be terrorized by jump scares.

At long last, The Kartrite Resort and Indoor Waterpark is open! (The pandemic put things on pause for a bit.) Located about two hours away in The Catskills' Monticello, Kartrite Resort and Indoor Waterpark is now the state's largest. The 80,000-square-foot space features 11 water attractions, from mild (lazy river) to thrill-inducing. Constructed with a transparent, energy-efficient Texlon roof, the space is column-free, includes a living plant wall, and kept a pleasant 84 degrees year-round. If you're too pooped to leave after riding the waves and slides, you can crash in one of the resort's many lodging options. Also, FYI, Resorts World Casino is next door, and there's a spa on site (which also offers kid's treatments).
Good to know: If you do stay a while, there's plenty else to do besides splish and splash. The resort is home to eight dining options, from grab-and-go to sit down, with many serving food made with ingredients from local suppliers. Diversions for kids include an arcade, mini bowling alley, LED-lit climbing wall, laser tag, and a VR experience. Also nearby is Holiday Mountain (10 minutes away) which has skiing and tubing in the winter and go-karts and mini-golf in the summer, and Bethel Woods, home to Woodstock Music Fest in 1969 and concert series and events today. Also: the brand new LEGOLAND Resort in Goshen, New York is a quick drive away.

Located right by Lake George, Great Escape Lodge in the Adirondacks attracts tourists and locals alike; especially because it's part of the well-known and established Six Flags family of theme parks. Not only do fun characters like Scooby-Doo, a moose, and a fox come visit kids in the Lodge's lobby, the indoor water park is literally just off the lodging area — so you can walk from your hotel room right into the water park in your flip-flops without ever going outside.
The water park is 38,000 square feet, maintained at a warm 82 degrees, and splashy attractions include the Tall Timbers Treehouse (great for pre-school aged kids) which features water jets, steering wheels and a gigantic water bucket above that can soak you down below at any time. Older kids can float down the "lazy river" on inflatable tubes; splash in the lagoon, where cascading jets of water douse guests below, enjoy "Avalanche" tubing on a large raft that seats four, and twist their way down slippery slides. If you're traveling with a toddler, bring them to the mini pool area, which features very shallow water, baby swings, a baby slide, and wildlife-themed fountains. Johnny Rocket's is on site serving up burgers, and kids can blow off even more steam at the hotel's arcade.
Good to know: When booking your reservation, you can request that costumed character bring your kids some cookies before bedtime. For the parents, there's an adults-only heated spa dubbed "Soakum Spring" and if you love massages and facials, there's a day spa on-premises.
Generations of families have visited Rocking Horse Ranch, an all-inclusive resort known for its year-round outdoor horseback riding (yes, even in the middle of winter). Guests like the personalized attention they receive here, and although the Ranch's indoor water park isn't as grandiose as others, it's the perfect place to visit and enjoy in one afternoon, without the large crowds. Big Splash Indoor Water Park is kept at a comfortable 85 degrees, features a 250-foot flume for kids who can't get enough of water slides, water geysers, aqua stations with mini-slides, fountains, large dumping buckets, and more.
Good to know: They also have other winter fun like skiing and snowtubing, and the ranch is home to outdoor water slides, bungee jumping and rock climbing, should you want to make a trip in warmer months. The 2020 summer season brought a new "Outdoor Aquatic Adventure" area, with water slides, Eldorado hot springs and a zero-depth entry pool.

Located in the Pocono Mountains, Great Wolf Lodge offers 80,000-square-feet of space to splish and splash, and it recently wrapped up a $12 million upgrade to its facilities and hotel rooms. (We stayed in a new-and-improved room—it had a modern, woodsy-chic vibe, and ours, a suite on the top floor, had a sky-high ceiling making it feel extra roomy. Comfy beds, a small balcony, and a separate area for a couch and TV upped the cozy factor.)
Younger kids will enjoy the indoor mini-pool with spray-and-play features as well as well as a tree house to play in. Older kids gravitate towards The Big Foot Pass, where they "walk" from one end of the pool to another by hanging on to a rope and a signature water slide using a large raft called "River Canyon Run." Great Wolf is also home to twin, three-story slides that provide an escape route out of the wet Fort Mackenzie tree house, tons of slide drops, and a one-of-kind water slide/roller coaster dubbed the "Hydro Plunge." There's also two hot whirlpools (one just for adults) and "Slideboarding", in which you use thumb controls to hit LED targets and get a score after your final plunge.
Good to know: Great Wolf is super family-friendly, especially if you stay a night. (The main lobby, with its huge antler chandeliers and large fireplace, is very welcoming, and many guests—kids and adults alike—make it home, hanging out enjoying juice and jammies and vino and loungewear, respectively.) Aside from the waterpark, this space acts as "fun HQ", with everything from face-painting and balloon twisting, to story time, shows, movie screenings, and a killer pajama dance party right before bed. (Seriously, it's great.)
Great Wolf is home to lots of other ways to keep the kids entertained and busy, including a "MagiQuest" adventure that takes them on hunts using a magic wand; a buzzing arcade, kid-friendly bowling, a "Creation Station" where they can pick a stuffie to be filled; Glow Golf, and more. Great Wolf also has outdoor water play spots and a rope course, so it's also a good choice for escapes in any season.

The balmy bubble features seven pools and 13 slides — including the Venus SlydeTrap, the first Aqua-Sphere-Manta slide of its kind in the world, and a wave pool. Also located in the Poconos,The Kalahari Resort is a 220,000-square-foot indoor waterpark inspired by the spirit of Africa. You'll find twisting waterslides, a lazy river, indoor/outdoor family whirlpool, spots for little ones to play and body-board and stand-up surfing opportunities for bigger kids (and adults). Poolside cabanas are available for rent here and it's got a retractable roof for when the temps rise.
Good to know: You'll also find multiple dining options on site, a spa (with kid options), additional entertainment ranging from an arcade and Virtual Reality experiences, as well as ziplines, ropes courses, mini golf, mini bowling, an escape room and more.
This DreamWorks-branded indoor water park is part of the American Dream shopping and amusement complex, which is also home to Nickelodeon Universe amusement park; Big SNOW, an indoor ski slope; an indoor ice rink, Angry Birds mini golf, and retail shops.
The water park has something for everyone in the family. For thrill-seekers there's the world’s tallest indoor drop slide with a 50-foot free-fall. You can also ride with dragons around the entire water park on "Toothless Trickling Torpedo," the world’s tallest and longest hydromagnetic water coaster. For calmer fun, float down the lazy river, or hang out in the world's largest indoor wave pool. The Kung Fu Panda Temple of Awesomeness is an interactive water play structure including slides, dump cups, and even a giant tipping bucket, and little kids will love the Penguins Frozen Fun Zone. You can also expect appearances from characters in DreamWorks films throughout the day (ask for a schedule when you arrive to see who is on tap for the day).
This large 60,000-square-foot park provides plenty of fun for people of all ages. For families with small children, the park's Lizard Lagoon is a feature dedicated entirely to young children and infants (it’s a play area with small slides) little kids will also enjoy TimBukTu, a play area outfitted with numerous interactive water features. The indoor water park has a retractable roof (it opens in the summer), and private cabanas for rent, adding to the tropical feel of the park regardless of the season. Cool water rides for those who love to surf, slide, soak, or be sprayed include The Flow Ride indoor surf simulator, The Congo Bongo (a leisurely float around the park in a tube), tube slides, the Crocodile Flats obstacle course, and more.
Recent additions to the park include Tut's Twisters, head-first, side-by-side racing slides with a five-story-high drop, and indoor leisure pool Cleopatra's Cove. Alabama: McWane Science Center, Birmingham Since opening its doors in 1998, McWane Science Center has welcomed millions of visitors to learn about all things STEM from exciting hands-on experiences. Permanent exhibits include Itty Bitty Magic City (a play area perfect for kindergarteners and younger tots), Alabama Dinosaurs (featuring fossils discovered in the state) and NatureScope (discover birds and creepy crawly things).

There are more than 300 play experiences spread over three floors, in addition to a range of classes about everything from fossils to art. Be sure to check out the Schuff-Perini Climber, a tree-like sculpture that gives kids a bird’s-eye view of the museum’s atrium.
4. Arkansas: Scott Family Amazeum, Bentonville Your crew will love the Amazeum, an awesome interactive museum with a focus on art, science and Arkansas culture. Be sure to check out the climbable tree canopy, indoor cave and tinkering hub, in addition to daily activities like DIY workshops, day camps, and playgroups. There’s also a one-acre outdoor area with plenty to explore, including a rock wall and a giant rope structure.
5. California: Exploratorium, San Francisco The Exploratorium moved to Pier 15 on the San Francisco waterfront in 2013, tripling the overall space to 330,000 square feet. Truly a hands-on interactive experience for ages 4-12, it’s hard to say what the kids will enjoy more—taking a sensory-loaded trip through the tactile dome, visiting the tinkering studio or trying out iconic experiments like the shadow box. The museum’s exhibits are built in-house and constantly evolving, which makes every trip special and unique.
6. Colorado: Children’s Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus, Denver The Children’s Museum of Denver boasts a nine-acre campus, with awesome exhibits like Altitude, where kids make their way up and around over three levels of Colorado heritage to reach the lookout at the tippy top, and Box Canyon, an indoor mountain range for smaller tots. Kids can also go grocery shopping in a mini farmers market, learn about the science behind bubbles, and let their imagination shine at the art studio.
7. Connecticut: Kidcity Children’s Museum, Middletown Kids ages 1-7 will have a blast exploring Kidcity’s one-of-a-kind, hands-on exhibits, all of which are built by in-house artists. There’s a Fishery, where you’ll use conveyors to bring in the catch of the day; a Space Age Roadtrip, where friendly aliens take a trip on Route 66; and a medieval village called Middleshire, where kids can build a castle and keep watch for Vikings. 8. Delaware: Delaware Children’s Museum, Wilmington Your little explorers will have the chance to discover the worlds of science, math, and technology at the Delaware Children’s Museum. Monkey around in the Stratosphere, a cool climbing structure that overlooks the museum’s lobby; learn what an architect does and how buildings take shape, and let your tiniest tots play on a model train in the transportation-themed area.
9. Florida: Tallahassee Museum, Tallahassee Although it’s not strictly a children’s museum, this gem located on beautiful Lake Bradford will be a hit for adults and kids alike. You’ll find an 1880s farmstead, historical buildings and a live collection of native wildlife, in addition to a zip line and adventure course for the thrill-seekers in your crew. 11. Hawaii: Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center, Honolulu Whether you’re an island dweller or just on Oahu for vacation, the Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center is definitely worth a visit. Kids are encouraged to use their senses of touch, sight, hearing, and smell to gain a better understanding of the world around them. Exhibits include Tot Spot (a special play zone for your tiniest ones), Fantastic You (an up-close and personal look at the human body) and Rainforest Adventures (an exploration of rainforests and our precious natural resources).
12. Idaho: Museum of Clean, Pocatello For a seriously unique experience, you’ve got to check out the Museum of Clean. There’s not just one focus here—everything from clean air to clean water to clean language is covered. Kids will love exploring the museum’s play areas and interactive features (and looking at a massive collection of vacuum cleaners is pretty fun, too!).
13. Illinois: Kohl Children’s Museum, Glenview To folks living or vacationing in the greater Chicago area, Kohl Children’s Museum is just what the doctor ordered for beating the winter blues. With 17 permanent exhibits, kids are able to expend tons of extra energy by becoming veterinarians, nature explorers, chefs, mechanics and even Whole Food employees, all in one day. Don’t want to leave for lunch? Stop off at the Cosi for food and snacks.

Indiana: Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Worthy of a vacation in itself, lucky families who visit the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis are in for five floors of energy-zapping activities and fun. As the biggest children’s museum in the world, it has almost 500,000 square feet of exhibition space, 11 permanent exhibits, and over 120,000 real artifacts. From the Dinosphere and All Aboard! to National Geographic Treasures of the Earth, there’s enough to keep you busy for a few days.
15. Iowa: Iowa Children’s Museum, Coralville The Iowa Children’s Museum is all about inspiring kids to learn and grow through play, and their multi-sensory exhibits hit it out of the park. Aspiring chefs get to work in a pretend pizzeria; tots can learn basic physics lessons with race cars, tracks, and mazes; and train-obsessed kids can play with model trains weaving their way through Iowa. In case that’s not enough to tire them out, there are also special events for art-making, STEM learning and more.
16. Kansas: Cosmosphere, Hutchinson Go on a space odyssey at the coolest museum in Kansas, a 105,000-square-foot space and science center that’ll keep your whole crew entertained for hours. Watch a jaw-dropping show in their state-of-the-art planetarium (there’s a show about black holes narrated by Liam Neeson!), browse the largest combined collection of U.S. and Russian space artifacts in the world and watch live demonstrations of science experiments.
17. Kentucky: Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, Louisville A visit to the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory is sure to be a home run, especially if you’ve got sports fans in your family. You’ll get to see how baseball bats are made (and you’ll get a miniature bat to take home), crawl through a giant glove, try your hand at a simulated pitching experience and hold bats that were used by baseball legends.

Louisiana: Louisiana Children’s Museum, New Orleans With a visit to the Louisiana Children’s Museum, little ones will have the chance to learn about everything from reading and math to architectural ideas and the nuances of grocery shopping—all through super fun, hands-on activities and exhibits. Find out how to use a fulcrum or a pulley with the Simple Machines exhibit, head to Art Trek to explore a range of different media and techniques and go back in time to check out the recreated courtyard of one of New Orleans’ oldest buildings. With a fun mix of science, art and Louisiana-inspired activities, there’s really something for everyone.
19. Maine: Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine, Portland Kids 10 & under will love spending the day playing and learning at this gem of a museum in Portland. The hands-on exhibits range from an exploration of the camera obscura to a kiddie-style farmers market (complete with bakery and fish market) to a special area that’s perfect for your tiniest tots. And since this is Maine, after all, there’s even a replica lobster boat where kids can learn about the state’s working waterfronts.

Maryland: Port Discovery Children’s Museum, Baltimore Its three floors, 13 exhibits and loads of purposeful play make Port Discovery Children’s Museum one of the best indoor spaces in the Mid-Atlantic region for kids ages 0-10. Start the day in KidWorks, the three-story urban treehouse that will not only give their little bodies but also their minds, a major workout. Then, let your sous chefs whip up a quick meal at Tiny’s Diner and take a journey through Maryland’s rich heritage in Tot Trails.
21. Massachusetts: Boston Children’s Museum, Boston There are 88,000 square feet of hands-on engagement at the Boston Children’s Museum. The focus on science, culture, health & fitness and the arts make this an ideal destination when it’s just too cold to be outdoors—a few attempts to make it to the top of The New Balance Foundation Climb, the three-story climbing structure in the center of the museum, will leave your kids tired and happy. Plus, visitors benefit from the scores of programs and activities developed by museum educators.
22. Michigan: Impression 5 Science Center, Lansing In 1972, Impression 5 became one of the first hands-on science centers in the country, and they’ve been a Michigan favorite ever since. With a focus on dynamic, interactive activities that encourage kids of all ages to play, create and challenge their understanding of science, it’s well worth the trip. Learn about oral health with giant dental tools, step into a full-size body bubble, become a naturalist for the day and more.
23. Minnesota: Minnesota Children’s Museum, St. Paul The Minnesota Children’s Museum’s mission is to spark learning through play, and you’ll see what they mean after one visit. Kids will love exploring The Scramble, a four-story vertical adventure with a spiral slide and a netted catwalk. Let them get creative making their own stories at Imaginopolis, and join in on Our World, a mini-city with everything from a post office to a farmers market.
24. Mississippi: Mississippi Children’s Museum, Jackson Kiddos will have a blast playing the day away at this Jackson gem. The 40,000-square-foot museum houses five galleries of educational, interactive exhibits and weekly programs that focus on everything from literacy to science to Mississippi heritage. Learn about healthy eating in a cute kitchen, make a masterpiece in the art studio and find out about the state’s agriculture.
25. Missouri: City Museum, St. Louis We recommend wearing comfy clothes for your day at the City Museum because you’ll definitely be crawling, sliding and climbing. With lots of interesting architectural features like old chimneys and salvaged bridges, it’s captivating for kids and adults alike. Venture through hidden tunnels, monkey around on fun jungle gyms and zoom down indoor slides—your little explorers will love it all.

Montana: Children’s Museum of Bozeman, Bozeman Offering hands-on exhibits, summer science camps, after-school activities, and educational programs, the Children’s Museum of Bozeman is a cultural hub. Kids can make slime in the science lab, collect eggs from chickens on the farm, tinker with electric circuits and more. Even your tiniest tots will love their special zone that offers plenty of space for rolling, crawling and climbing.
27. Nebraska: Lincoln Children’s Museum, Lincoln Spend the day exploring the Lincoln Children’s Museum’s three floors and 23,300 square feet of hands-on exhibits and imaginative programs. Check out Cuckoo Construction, the museum’s largest exhibit yet, which gives kids a chance to help build walls and watch foam bricks fall. Chill out in the Grow Zone, an interactive garden perfect for tiny tots. Cruise over to the water exhibit, where you can watch the rain fall from the clouds above and build dams to hold the water back.

Nevada: DISCOVERY Children’s Museum, Las Vegas The three-story DISCOVERY Children’s Museum opened in 2013 and is home to nine themed exhibition halls filled with interactive hands-on core exhibits. It’s hard to miss The Summit, a 70-foot tower with 12 levels of engaging, hands-on play. Kids can lift a car with a lever and (if they make it!) take a peek at the amazing roof at the very tippy top. Check out a mini Hoover Dam in Water World or watch your tiny tods wander around Toddler Town—a desert-themed space complete with trains, tunnels, and art zone. If you make it to the third floor, which is dedicated to art, exploration, and curiosity, consider it a successful visit.
29. New Hampshire: Children’s Museum of New Hampshire, Dover The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire is all about hands-on discovery, and you’ll get what they mean when you see their amazing exhibits. Engineer a flying machine and launch it from a 30-foot tower, venture into a cave to read glow-in-the-dark books and find secret paintings, dig for Triceratops fossils and more. Between the exhibits, STEAM Lab drop-in sessions and junior science classes, there’s enough to keep you coming back for more all year long.

New Jersey: Liberty Science Center, Jersey City Inspire your budding scientists and engineers with a visit to Liberty Science Center, home to 12 museum exhibition halls, a live animal collection with 110 species, giant aquariums, a 3D theater and lots more. Catch a planetarium show, check out views from the Hubble Space Telescope and meet some of the animals that live in the Hudson River. Train-obsessed kids can even learn, play, and solve problems with Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends.
31. New Mexico: Explora Science Museum & Children’s Museum, Albuquerque Spend the day learning about science, technology, engineering, art, and math through fun hands-on activities at Explora. Experiment with balls and ramps to slow down the effects of gravity, make a masterpiece out of recycled materials and discover the unique characteristics of water. 32. New York: The Strong National Museum of Play, Rochester The truth is, a family could spend more than an entire day at The Strong: The National Museum of Play. With items from the Rochesterian Margaret Woodbury Strong’s extensive doll and toy collection, the museum has grown into a massive and impressive 100,000-square-foot destination for interactive fun and learning for kids of all ages. Stellar permanent exhibits include Can You Tell Me How To Get To Sesame Street?; American Comic Book Heroes: The Battle of Good vs. Evil, and Reading Adventureland. The museum is also home to the National Toy Hall of Fame, and when you add on-site restaurants, a carousel and easy-as-pie parking and it’s a destination worthy of a family road trip!
33. North Carolina: Discovery Place Science, Charlotte A visit to Discovery Place is a must for opening little eyes to the wonders of science. From World Alive, where guests can wander through a rainforest and an aquarium, to Think it Up, a “thought studio” of multisensory colors, sights and sounds, and back to Project Build, where anyone can be an architect for a day, every inch of Discovery Place is dedicated to making learning fun and interesting. The tiniest family members have their own special place for discovery, in Kidscience, and the IMAX Dome Theatre screens family-friendly movies and short films perfect for all ages.
34. North Dakota: Dickinson Museum Center, Dickinson Science-loving kiddos will enjoy learning about dinosaurs and more at the Dickinson Museum Center. Check out fossils that were discovered in the area, see their collection of rocks and minerals and pay a visit to Prairie Outpost Park, where you’ll find historic buildings and a coal car. Kids will love playing in the augmented reality sandbox, too.

Ohio: COSI: Center of Science and Industry, Columbus With over 300 interactive exhibitions, a seven-story extreme theater and Little Kidspace, created just for kiddos ages 0-5, there’s enough educational fun to keep the entire family entertained for days at COSI. Encounter Poseidon at Ocean, the playground depicting the mysteries of the sea. Check out the Energy Explorers exhibit, which teaches families about energy and making smart choices. Try to lift your own weight in a pulley chair in Gadgets. With the range of traveling exhibits and classic features, every COSI visit can be a different adventure.
36. Oklahoma: Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum, Seminole Since 1993, the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum has been a favorite destination for Oklahoma families. The museum is based on an imaginary town, where kids can explore many careers, all from a pint-sized vantage point—they can become a judge, doctor, artist, news anchor, meteorologist, actor, pilot, EMT or firefighter for the day. Plus, you can get lost in the 12,000-square-foot Castle Maze, see aquatic life native to the state and take a ride on a miniature train.
37. Oregon: OMSI: Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, Portland OMSI is a can’t-miss museum in Portland, where kids and adults alike can immerse themselves in all things science and technology. Use “human power” to take a virtual trip through Portland, craft your own world using an augmented reality sandbox and experience the sights and smells of the world’s only permafrost research tunnel. Be sure to check out their cool camps and classes too, on topics ranging from kitchen chemistry to web design.
38. Pennsylvania: Please Touch Museum, Philadelphia The name says it all. What other place has the singular mission of encouraging young visitors to touch everything? Start a visit at the huge Monument to Play—a 40-foot replica of the Statue of Liberty’s Arm and Torch (made out of toys). Move your kids towards Roadside Attractions, where they can repair cars, collect tolls, create fantasy vehicles and take a trip to the future. Watch fairy tales come to life at the Story Castle and take a spin on the historical, century-old Woodside Park Dentzel Carousel, before dropping down the rabbit hole to visit Wonderland, all in the same afternoon.
39. Rhode Island: Providence Children’s Museum, Providence Kick cabin fever to the curb with a visit to the Providence Children’s Museum, home to hands-on, play-based exhibits and programs that explore culture and all things STEAM. Check out Play Power, where you can send objects soaring through air tubes and construct magnetic mazes; The Climber, a kid-favorite two-story-high climbing maze; and Coming to Rhode Island, an interactive time-traveling adventure that introduces kids to people who immigrated to the state. Their events calendar also has loads more fun in store, including live theater and art sessions.
40. South Carolina: The Children’s Museum of the Upstate, Greenville Spark your kiddo’s curiosity with a visit to The Children’s Museum of the Upstate. With 19 interactive exhibits, there’s enough to keep any kid entertained for hours. Build dams and learn about water in Reedy River Bend, report the news or weather in the WTCM Studio and monkey around on a multi-story climbing structure. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, grab a tasty meal at Seedlings, the in-house farm-to-table restaurant.
41. South Dakota: Children’s Museum of South Dakota, Brookings Make a day of it with your whole crew at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. In the exhibit Our Prairie, kids can learn about the region’s past and role-play the daily tasks of living on the land over one hundred years ago. Head to Sensations to experiment with patterns, textures, shapes, and colors and collaborate on hands-on activities. Then cruise over to KidStreet to pick up your mail, tune up your car and make sandwiches and ice cream sundaes. There’s also a cozy MiniExplorers area that’s perfect for your tiniest tots.
42. Tennessee: Creative Discovery Museum, Chattanooga Located in the heart of downtown Chattanooga, the Creative Discovery Museum is totally worth a visit. Their permanent exhibits include Buzz Alley and Bee Garden (watch real bees hard at work!), Culinary Corner (make healthy snacks using ingredients from the museum’s rooftop garden), Lookout Tower (get a bird’s-eye view of Chattanooga) and Excavation Station (grab a shovel and get digging in the sand). Be sure to check out their events calendar for the latest goings-on, from a snow day celebration to a honey harvest.

Texas: Children’s Museum of Houston, Houston With 14 permanent galleries and exhibits, a cafe, a library, and a family learning center, you’ll be bowled over by the 90,000 square feet of play available at the Children’s Museum of Houston. May we suggest starting at Kidtropolis, a city built and run by kids from the ground up on a daily basis, and moving on to How Does It Work? where your budding scientists have access to a ton of hands-on experiments, like creating a roller coaster and sending messages via fiber optics.
44. Utah: Treehouse Children’s Museum, Ogden Since 1992, Treehouse Children’s Museum has been a favorite for kids ages 1-12 (and their families, too). The exhibits encourage playing imaginatively and making new stories—there’s the Big Red Barn where you can “milk” a cow and collect eggs from chickens, and there are areas based on different countries so you can dream up an international journey. There’s even an Oval Office where tots can pretend to be the president.
45. Vermont: Montshire Museum of Science, Norwich Founded in 1974, the Montshire is now one of the busiest museums in northern New England, and for good reason. It’s dedicated to teaching visitors about natural and physical sciences, ecology and technology through its 140 hands-on exhibits. Kids will love getting a look at the inner workings of toys; examining seeds, bones, and plants under a microscope; experimenting with different types of instruments, and playing with different types of bubbles. This one’s sure to be a hit with adults and kids alike.
46. Virginia: Amazement Square, Lynchburg With four floors and nine galleries of hands-on, interactive exhibits, Amazement Square is an amazing place to spend the day. Start off by exploring Amazement Tower, a climbing structure with slides, ladders, tunnels, and a zip-line that spans all four of the museum’s floors. Then get creative in the Kaleidoscope Gallery, where kids can paint on the walls and rock out on stage. Toddlers will also love playing in Shipwreck Cove, a special under-three area with a pirate ship and a coral reef.
47. Washington: Hands On Children’s Museum, Olympia The most visited children’s museum in Washington, it’s our go-to for hands-on science and art learning. With more than 150 exhibits, you’ll never run out of things to do—kids can shop in a mini farmers market, send scarves through a 25-foot AirWays Maze, make and float their own boats and lots more. Be sure to check out their events, too, including free first Friday nights and art studio sessions.
48. Washington, D.C.: National Building Museum, Washington, D.C. Go on an architectural adventure at the National Building Museum. Kiddos can learn about design, construction and engineering through the museum’s two distinct areas. The Building Zone (for ages 2 to 6) lets them stack and balance faux bricks, drive a miniaturized bulldozer and romp around a “green” playhouse, while the other area, Play Work Build, has foam blocks of varying sizes, allowing adults and children alike to build and demolish their own creations. 49. West Virginia: Kruger Street Toy & Train Museum, Wheeling Located in beautiful Wheeling, kids of all ages will love exploring the Kruger Street Toy & Train Museum. You’ll find interactive, operating model train layouts, along with toys you’ll remember from your childhood—dolls, dollhouses, toy soldiers, playsets, trains, planes, and ships, just to name a few. Kids will have a blast taking a peek into the past (and seeing how far toys have come!).
50. Wisconsin: The Building for Kids Children’s Museum, Appleton Foster your kids’ curiosity with a visit to The Building for Kids Children’s Museum. They’ll have the chance to climb into a 10-foot human heart, make a masterpiece using blocks, become a firefighter for the day, build boats and lots more. If you enter Yosemite via the Big Oak Flat Entrance, the Tuolomne Grove Nature Trail is right there. It's a kid favorite because you are rewarded with some massive Giant Sequoias, including one you can walk through. It's a mile downhill from the parking lot to the grove where you then take a half-mile loop to see all the sequoias.
The mile climb back uphill can be a little bit challenging for little legs but the route is paved and there are info stations along the way that explain the history of this road in the gold rush days. In the fall you'll find all shades of reds and oranges from the Dogwood trees.
Hetch Hetchy Entrance
We love this option to enter the park because you will often avoid the long lines and waiting that the other entrances see. From 120, it's about a 9 mile drive to the entrance station and then another 20 minutes to get to the reservoir. But, it's totally worth the drive, take our word for it!
The highlight of this Yosemite entrance is the reservoir and dam that were constructed after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake to provide water to the Bay Area. When you arrive, pass the dam and park along the road. From there you can walk across the dam and take a number of paths, the most popular of which will get you to Wapoma Falls. This 5-mile round trip hike is mostly flat and totally gorgeous. We recommend going in the spring so you can take advantage of the melting snow and see the falls at its peak.

Evergreen Lodge If you are looking for modern conveniences in a woodsy setting, pick Evergreen Lodge for your next stay when you visit Yosemite. Right now, Evergreen Lodge is celebrating 100 years of welcoming families to Yosemite and it's the perfect time to visit. You can book special packages and activities through the end of 2021. The property is located about 10 minutes off highway 120 on the road that takes you to Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. You'll feel like you are totally away from it all when you visit.
Accommodations include cabins of every size including the two-bedroom family cabins that we definitely recommend for those visiting with little ones. You'll get a bedroom with a king-size bed, another with two twins and a center living room with a pull-out couch. Custom camping is also available if you really want to get a taste of the outdoors. You'll arrive to your campsite with a tent already set up (pretty much the camping dream) and mattresses already laid out.
While cooking at the cabins and campsites is prohibited due to fire danger and animal issues, Evergreen Lodge has excellent dining options for families. Pick up snacks, sandwiches, happy hour supplies and more at the general store. For a sit-down meal, there's the Main Lodge and Tavern, both with outdoor dining available and loads of kid-friendly options. The pool bar opens in the summer months for snacks and drinks under the sun.

Probably our favorite aspect of Evergreen Lodge is all the areas for kids to play. There are multiple climbing structures with slides, ziplines, bocce ball areas and giant chess boards. Sit on the deck of your family cabin and watch the kids play under the trees. It's just about as relaxing as a family vacation can be!
Daily activities are offered if you'd like a little more structured fun during your visit. You can enjoy family hikes, nature crafts, stargazing, tie dye and more. Check the schedule when you arrive to see what's available. And, don't miss the family-favorite nightly s'mores. Grab your s'mores kit from the activities desk and get roasting at the campfires outside.
Evergreen Lodge is located just 10 minutes from the Hetch Hetchy entrance to Yosemite and 15 minutes to the Big Oak Flat entrance. Guided hikes and Yosemite Valley tours are able to be booked through Evergreen Lodge.

Rush Creek Lodge at Yosemite Families looking for an amazing spot to stay while visiting Yosemite should book a villa at Rush Creek Lodge. Just outside the west park entrance, Rush Creek offers amazing views, rooms that are perfect for families and more on-site activities than you could imagine.
Hillside villas sleep up to six people—one room with two twin beds (or a king) and a second room with a king and pull out couch. All rooms come with a fridge, coffee maker and huge bathroom. You have tons of space to store your snacks and hang your coats when you walk in the door.
One thing you won't find in your Rush Creek Lodge room is a TV. This deliberate effort to get people to head outside will be just the electronics break you need. If you need something to keep the kids busy while you enjoy a cup of coffee on your deck (we can all dream, right?), each room is stocked with games like Barrel of Monkeys and Yahtzee.

Just Opened: The Rush Creek Spa is definitely something you'll want to check out during your stay. The space is thoughtfully designed to include the iconic features of Yosemite into a wellness experience that induces relaxation and rejuvenation and restores balance to the mind, body and spirit.
While the spa is typically adults only, the kids are welcome to join you when you book exclusive time for your family to use the spa facilities including the saltwater hot tub with waterfall, aromatherapy steam room, cool mist room, warm waterfall coves and innovative sensory room. Add on a massage treatment or facial for the ultimate in relaxation. You can also opt for kid-free spa time if that's more relaxing for you (we totally get it).

Venture to the playground to ride on kid-sized ziplines, a massive slide and swings for the little ones. You can also play giant-sized games of Connect Four and checkers. Pull up an adirondack chair and enjoy the sunset as the kids explore.
Warning, you might have a hard time getting the kids to venture off property when they see the massive game room and playground that awaits them at Rush Creek. The game room has a climbing "tree house" as well as pinball, shuffle board, pool, foosball and pretty much every board game you can imagine. Out on the deck you'll find ping pong and darts.
The Recreation Team has daily activities planned from stargazing to tie dyeing to geode breaking. Evenings include s'mores by the outdoor fire pit (yes, nightly s'mores!) as well as fierce games of BINGO. The Rec Team can also suggest hikes, book you a massage or reserve you a spot on one of the hotel's guided tours in Yosemite.
Other amenities at Rush Creek include a heated salt water pool, two hot tubs, both a tavern and a restaurant, and a lobby gift shop that serves fancy lattes and DIY trail mix pretty much all day. You can find laundry facilities and microwaves in the main lodge.

We love the ease of visiting Yosemite via Mariposa and the El Portal entrance. Whether you travel through Livermore and then Merced, or head south to Gilroy and then east through Los Banos, the drive there is pretty easy even for kids who tend to get car sick. The road doesn't get windy until you pass Mariposa and start to head into the park. The drive from Mariposa to Yosemite is about an hour and you'll have another 30 minutes to get to the valley from the entrance.
From the El Portal entrance you can easily make your way to Bridalveil Falls, Tunnel View, Yosemite Valley and the Badger Pass Ski Area.

Yosemite Bug Rustic Mountain Resort Families looking for the perfect combination of rustic and convenient will love the Yosemite Bug. Located in Midpines on the road between Mariposa and the El Portal entrance, you'll be perfectly located for Yosemite adventures. The Yosemite Bug offers lots of different lodging options—cabins, rooms with private bathrooms, rooms with shared bathrooms, glamping tents, camping spots and even hostel rooms. There's a shared kitchen onsite that's available for your use if you'd like to cook a meal and laundry facilities for when your kid gets his favorite pants soaked on Day 1. There's also an onsite spa.
The property also has the June Bug Cafe if you'd rather have someone else cook for you. We highly recommend taking advantage of this option as the meals are delicious and large enough to share. The dinner menu changes from day to day with vegan and vegetarian options always available (plus options like pizza for the kids). Order up your trail lunch at breakfast time and you can take it with you when you venture into the park.
Yosemite Bug has trails on the property that will lead you down to a waterfall and swimming hole (be careful as the trails are steep and difficult for little ones). You can rent out snowshoes in the winter (as available). The kids will love the outdoor ping pong and foosball tables and parents will love that the rooms do not have TVs (because, nature!).
You should definitely plan to spend some time exploring Mariposa while visiting Yosemite. This quaint, mountain town has lots of great restaurants and we particularly recommend 1850 Restaurant for their burgers, wings and brews (snag a growler to go).
You'll want to plan some time to visit the Mariposa Museum and History Center. Named by the Smithsonian Institute as the best small museum west of the Mississippi River, the Mariposa Museum and History Center brings Gold Rush History, Native American History and the Yosemite region’s tourism history alive in one of the most extensive museum experiences one can have. The outdoor/indoor setup allows for visitors to walk through time and we know the kids will love it.
Another fun spot to visit is the California State Mining and Mineral Museum. Kids will love walking through the mine tunnel and checking out the “Fricot Nugget,” a rare and beautiful 13.8-pound piece of crystalline gold found in the American River in 1864. Because this museum is also a state park, kids can participate in the onsite junior ranger program.
The brand-new Yosemite Climbing Association Gallery and Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday and kids will love seeing the progression of the sport of mountain climbing through this massive collection of photos and gear. See how the first climbers of El Capitan and other Yosemite big walls were able to accomplish such feats with minimal gear. Pro tip: If you are able to book a private tour with museum director and rock climbing legend Ken Yager, definitely take advantage of it as he is full of enthusiasm for the sport as well as information about the artifacts in the museum.
South Entrance

We love the South Entrance to Yosemite because the drive from the Bay Area is less windy than via the Big Oak Flat Entrance. It's also the preferred access point for those travelling from Los Angeles. As soon as you enter the park, you'll be right by the parking lot for the Mariposa Grove. Park here and take the shuttle bus to the grove entrance. We love it here because Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is the largest sequoia grove in Yosemite and is home to over 500 mature giant sequoias.
Little ones or those with strollers can take the paved Big Trees Loop Trail and see a number of the park's famous trees. A longer path will take you to the Grizzly Giant, a massive tree with branches the size of large tree trunks! There are lots of other trails to extend your hike if you have older kids. We recommend taking the Mariposa Grove Trail up to see the pair of trees called the "Faithful Couple" as they merged together at their base! You can swing by the Mariposa Grove Cabin to learn about the park's early history before heading back down via the Perimeter Trail.

Explorer Cabins at Tenaya Lodge Make it easy on yourself and book a family cabin at Tenaya Lodge for your Yosemite visit (you can thank us later). The Explorer Cabins opened this summer and they are perfect for families as they are less than three miles from the Mariposa Grove South Entrance.
Family cabins have two bedrooms—one with a king bed and one with a twin-over-full bunk bed. The living room has a small kitchen, fireplace and a pull-out couch that can sleep two more. Family cabins are gathered together around a central fit pit that is lit each night for s'mores. It's a great opportunity to invite another family or grandparents along to share the beauty of the outdoors!

Kids will love the opportunity to try out the brand-new Kids Adventure Course that's located up by the main lodge. The course is designed for little ones ages four and up that are between 30 and 100 pounds. They get the opportunity to try out six different elements that include bridges, swinging logs and rope challenges. Right next to the course you can play a game of horseshoes as well as rent mountain bikes and sleds.
Other Tenaya Lodge activities include guided flashlight hikes, nightly dive-in movies, spa treatments and fishing (with equipment available to rent). In winter the big draws are the massive sledding hill and ice skating. The main lodge has a seasonal outdoor pool as well as an indoor pool where the dive-in movies are shown.

On-site dining includes the family-friendly Jackalopes Bar & Grill, upscale Embers (that's perfect for a night when you utilize the on-site childcare service) and the seasonal Timberloft Pizzeria and Summerdale BBQ. There's also a deli that sells snacks as well as to-go lunches for your day at Yosemite.

Yosemite Village
Make sure you set aside some time to spend exploring Yosemite Village. Grab some lunch fixin's and souvenirs at the gift shop (it is huge—perfect to stock up on everything from hot cocoa to wine to grilling supplies). Take a break to watch the Spirit of Yosemite film at the visitor center to give the kids all the background info on Yosemite and how it came to be a national park.
The Yosemite Museum has hands-on exhibits where kids can learn all about the cultural history of Yosemite's native Miwok and Paiute people from 1850 to the present. If you are lucky, you may even be able to see traditional skills presented by historians. Outside you can walk through a replica Miwok village to see how they lived.
Ranger programs are available throughout the year and seasonal activities (like ice skating in the winter) are also hosted at the village.
Insider tip: Do you have a 4th grader in your crew? Grab your free pass to the national parks through the Every Kid Outdoors program and you'll save yourself the $35 cost to get into the park.

A favorite hike for park visitors is the Mist Trail as you have the opportunity to see two waterfalls. Park at the Half Dome Village lot and take the free shuttle to stop 16. Walk across the bridge and you'll find the trailhead. The hike is uphill for about a mile to reach the footbridge where you can get a great view of Vernal Fall, especially when the water level is high in spring and summer. The trail can get crowded but there are scenic spots to stop along the way for a snack and a hiking break.
Beyond this point you can continue to the top of Vernal Fall via a steep, granite staircase. This can be challenging for little ones so the footbridge is a good turnaround point. Ambitious climbers can continue on to Nevada Fall via the Mist Trail.
After you return to the trailhead, you'll find a great spot to stop along the Merced River to have lunch and enjoy the water. Take the shuttle from stop 16 to stop 20 to return to the parking lot.
Yosemite in the Winter

Trust us and book a winter visit to Yosemite. The crowds are minimal and you'll see the park's magic in a totally different light. Consider renting snowshoes and bringing them with you so that you can explore the park's trails through the snow.
Badger Pass Ski Area is the oldest ski resort in CA and it is currently open for snowshoeing, cross country skiing and tubing with skiing and snowboarding also available this year. Just a quick drive up the mountain from Tunnel View, you'll find that the parking is easy and the kids will love a day spent sledding down the hills.
Late February is also the time of year when you might be able to catch a glimpse of the famed Horsetail Falls Firefall. This natural phenomenon occurs when the perfect conditions come together to make the Horsetail Falls appear to be flowing with fire. The park has designated a specific parking area at the Yosemite Falls Parking Area for those hoping to see the firefall. It's a 1.5-mile walk to the viewing area.
Getting There

North: From the Bay Area you'll be taking highway 120 to reach Tuolumne County and the Big Oak Flat entrance of Yosemite. This drive will take you through Stockton where you can stock up on veggies and fruits from various farm stands along the way. If you are looking for an opportunity to get out of the car for a bit, swing by Harris Orchards in Ripon to see what's in season. Our fall stop had apples, pomegranates and persimmons ripe for the picking! Summer bring stone fruits, cherries, grapes and more.
South: The drive to the South Entrance will take you through the grapevine along 152. Los Banos is a good place to stop as there are tons of fast food options there (and not much happening once you pass Los Banos).

The cabanas are plentiful, the beachside service is prompt; you won’t have to wait for that fruity drink or fresh ceviche (be sure to order the tacos too!) that’s served beachside. If you stay in the Grand Class, you'll have an oceanfront view; if you stay in the Ambassador, you'll enjoy views of both the infinity pool and the ocean.

From the turndown service and the Molton Brown products provided for your exclusive use to the attentive 24-hour concierge and luxury surroundings, this family-owned boutique hotel company doesn’t miss a beat. For those who love pampering, a new perk is the DIY face scrub provided by Se Spa and delivered to your hotel room. The minibar comes stocked with all kinds of goodies, and if you have kids in tow, you can request age-appropriate snacks, like chocolate milk, be stocked instead of adult items. The service is some of the best we've experienced. Whether you are sitting poolside, at one of the eight dining locations or in the spa area, you'll have someone taking your order within minutes.
4. The Hotel Suites

There are 539 suites on the property, and 75 of them are connecting suites, which is ideal for families Almost everything parents with small kids need is available at the Grand Velas. Upon request, kids will be welcomed with a tent, minibar snacks and tiny bathrobes. Essentials like a high chair, strollers, a baby bathtub, crib and a diaper genie are also available, which means you don't have to bring that gear from home. As an added amenity, many of the suites have private plunge pools.
Each experience is different. If you decide to stay in Zen, the surrounding jungle feels secluded, but the beach is a short shuttle drive away. The Ambassador is very kid-friendly; it has the pool closest to Azul, the buffet restaurant perfect for when kids need a break from the pool and the beach, and the Grand Class has the wow-worthy oceanfront views perfect for watching the sunrise or sunset (think adults-only getaway!).
5. The Food

You may come to the Grand Velas for the food alone. There are eight restaurants in total, and five of them offer an upscale culinary journey through Mexico and Europe and Asia.
Azul is a buffet-style restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with snacks in-between time. They’ve got a wide variety of menu options for every palate, including hamburgers and sushi. The open-air terrace has beachfront views, and the indoor space has air conditioning for when you want to take a break from the sun. There are other restaurants good for breakfast and lunch, like Chaká (also open for dinner) and Bistro.
Frida is a locally-inspired AAA Four-Diamond restaurant. One thing you must order is the tuna tartar (or three). The black bean soup is the right blend of spices, and kids will enjoy the grilled chicken with rice. If you feel like having a specialty drink, their tequila mixed drinks are your best bet. The decor is vibrant and eclectic in a nod to the iconic artist, there is often live music playing, and the ocean views don’t disappoint.
Piaf is a French-inspired dining experience for guests ages 16 & up. The wine list is expansive, and you might never have escargot as exceptional as the ones served here. The lobster bisque is creamy and full of flavor, and the lamb is a popular entree for good reason.
Cocina de Autor is a AAA Five-Diamond Award honoree—the first restaurant in an all-inclusive resort to be given the title. Celebrity chefs Bruno Oteiza and Mikel Alonso designed this avant-garde experience, which offers multi-course small plates prepared in ways that visually wow guests. This is an adults-only restaurant, so make childcare plans ahead of time.
Lucca is where you'll find Mediterranean-inspired cuisine like pizza, pasta and carpaccio, and Sen Lina is where you'll find pad Thai, teriyaki chicken, curry dishes and more.
6. The Activities & Amenities

Do you want to have alone time while the kids enjoy non-stop activities and fun?
Head for the kids and teen club. The kids club is open from 9 am-11 pm, and one glance at the schedule showed us that there’s something for every guest. There is cooking time, arts and crafts, movies, pool fun, movie night, dance parties and even yoga. They don’t serve food in the club itself, but staff members will take guests to Azul for meals. The Teen Club is so cool, you might have a hard time convincing your older kids to leave. Open from 11 am-11 pm, younger kids can come in to hang with their siblings until 7 pm, and after that, it’s teens only! There are Playstation pods, air hockey, foosball, pool tables and a lounge/club that sets the scene for chill time. Don’t forget to check out the piano bar or sing your heart out at the karaoke bar after your dinner and before picking up the kids.
