It’s that time of year again! The kiddos are headed back to school and they need notebooks, binders, new shoes and a list of school supplies you never saw coming.

Forget about carting the kids off to the mall in your minivan and spending a would-be pool day hunting down bargains. Poshmark wants to take away those back-to-school shopping woes and simplify your life.

So, how does Poshmark plan to make the back-to-school buying rush easier? The social shopping app, which is already used by 50 million people, is launching a School Market. This online shop is a one-stop place to get everything from notebooks and journals to pencil cases and planners.

If you still have some last-minute school supplies to pick up or your kiddo needs a new first day outfit, Poshmark’s School Market opens Aug. 13!

7 Things Families Must Do to Rock Back-to-School Season

With all the back-to-school shopping hooplah, you may have forgotten about Nintendo’s newest addition. Earlier in the summer the video game giant announced the Switch Lite, a smaller, stand-alone version of the original that won’t connect to the TV and doesn’t have detachable controllers would be coming to a store near you.

The Nintendo Switch Lite launches Sep. 20, but Amazon and Target are already taking pre-orders!

photo: Courtesy of Nintendo

So what do you need to know about ordering this handheld gaming device? To start with, the Switch Lite retails for $199.99 and comes in three colors—yellow, gray and turquoise. If your kiddo can wait, Nintendo will release a special Pokemon Zacian and Zamazenta Edition Nov. 8.

To pre-order your child’s newest (and soon-to-be fave) device just visit Amazon or Target’s website. As of now, the Switch Lite is Prime eligible on Amazon. This means you can expect to get the device roughly two days after the Sep. 20 release (not on the 20th). Target shoppers are pretty much in the same boat—with an expected delivery shortly after the device’s debut date.

With a depth of three feet in its deepest parts, this fountain definitely hits the afternoon cool down spot.

Note: As of July 2019, the fountain is temporarily closed due to Arena construction.

You’ve hit every playground, park and beach within a 15-mile radius of your ‘hood and exhausted every indoor attraction. Now, you and your crew are itching to get out of town and explore. But where do you go with just a month left before school starts? Suncadia Resort, A Destination Hotel is where. Whether you’re looking to hike, bike, fish, boat, swim or golf, you can make it happen (and more!) at this premier, all-season mountain resort. So, put your back-to-school shopping on hold, pack your bags and read on. The perfect end-of-summer family vacay is waiting for you!

A Mountain Oasis
Located just 80 miles east of Seattle, Suncadia Resort, A Destination Hotel offers families an array of lodging choices. The Lodge at Suncadia, the resort’s main building, is inspired by the grand lodges of our National Parks and beautifully captures the spirit of Washington state with its magnificent architecture. Choose from the 254 guest rooms, suites and penthouses; most with full kitchens and washers and dryers. For families who’d prefer a smaller and more exclusive lodging experience, The Inn at Suncadia, located just a short walk from The Lodge, offers upscale, pet-friendly rooms and suites with gorgeous views of the Cascade Mountains and golf course. And for those families who desire more space, the Trailhead Condominiums  are another great option. The classic mountain architecture and spacious, well-furnished one and two bedroom units are located within walking distance to the resort’s main amenities and feature living/dining areas, full kitchens, washers and dryers, fireplaces and decks with outdoor dining options.

Hit the Trails
With miles (and miles!) of paved trails and countless miles of scenic trails, you will have no problem keeping your family moving amidst the stunning views and lush surroundings of Suncadia’s forests and hills. But the easiest way to get out at Suncadia is to descend the 1,000 steps behind The Lodge and spend time along the banks of the Cle Elum River. As you make your way down the 21-flights of stairs, there are plenty of spots to sit and take in the views with your sidekick, while reading tidbits about some of the animals you might find along the nearby trails. The steps let out at Riverfront Park, a picnic-able, kite fly-able, Frisbee-throw-able area that’s a starting point for outdoor hiking adventures. Sure, your kiddos will love throwing rocks into the river, and climbing around the gigantic tress lining the shore, but when they need to get moving again, we suggest crossing the bridge (pictured above) to find easy trails that wind through the lush forest. Families can also take the River-to-Lodge trail up the backside of the hill. There’s no doubt it’s a steep climb, but there are plenty of spots to stop and catch your breath, and the views at the top of the ridge are worth the trek!

Go for a Spin
Over 40 miles of mostly paved trails make biking another go-to family fave when visiting Suncadia Resort, A Destination Hotel. You can bring your own from home, or rent anything you can think of: bikes, motorized scooters, bike trailers, jogging strollers, trail-along bike extensions, to make the most of a pedal-powered adventure around the property. With minimal traffic and wide, mostly flat trails, tooling around with the kids couldn’t be a simpler, stress-free afternoon activity. Psst…pack a portable lunch and make a pit stop at a scenic overlook or at one of the well-placed picnic tables around the property before heading back to The Lodge.

Even More Places to Dive In!
The indoor pool at The Suncadia Club Swim & Fitness Center boasts a combination lap pool and leisure pool with basketball hoop, a whirlpool spa area, saunas and steam rooms as well as two, two-story-high waterslides. When the skies are unforgiving this is where all the action’s at. But when the sun’s out and the temps are blazing, it’s hard to pass up diving into the deep end of the outdoor pool. With mountains looming in the background, Suncadia’s own food truck, The Kitchen, stationed off to the side, and poolside service, life is simply good here.

Another swim-tastic option for families (and brand-new this summer) is the Nelson Farm Pool, located at the Historic Nelson Farm. This awesome new swim center offers three separate bodies of water totaling close to 6,500 sq. ft., plus a new seasonal restaurant, Nellie’s at the Nelson Farm. The casual eatery offers alfresco seating throughout, while the menu features Pacific Northwest favorites inspired by The Nelson Farm’s Hay Creek Garden. On the menu, fresh herbs and vegetables are the star ingredients accompanied by main dishes like salmon skewers, slow roast BBQ pork baguettes and Washington apple burgers. Nellie’s also serves a variety of grab-and-go items and ice cream treats that pair well with a lazy day at the pool. For mom and dad, an array of beverages are also available at the restaurant’s walk-up bar, including a selection of craft brews and frozen cocktails.

Families with small children will especially love the zero-entry leisure pool at Nelson Farm and the interactive splash pad, and everyone (including mom and dad!) will love the small-scale lazy river and whirlpool and the in-pool loungers. They are the perfect place to chillax (and keep an eye on your little fish) when the temps are soaring. The Nelson Farm Pool is available for use by all resort guests and also offers men’s and women’s restrooms, changing rooms and an exterior open-air shower and lockers. Psst…the pool is not within walking distance of The Lodge, but is just a short drive away.

Set Sail
If you and your crew are itching to get on the lake, set sail by visiting the Village Pavilion. They’ve got kayaks, canoes and paddle boards for rent here ($22-$27 per hour) all summer long. Once you’ve picked out your sea-worthy vessel, take it for a spin on the alpine lake that skirts The Suncadia Club Swim & Fitness Center. No matter the time of day, you can count on smooth sailing here, with calm waters and a just-right size, it puts parents and kiddos at ease as they make their way around the curves and bends.

A Place to Play All the Sports
Pick up a protein pack at the Coal House Caffe to fuel an afternoon spent climbing on the playground and playing every sport you can think of at Dawson Park. Quite possibly the best playground ever, it’s got everything families need to get active on a sunny summer day. The Recreation Cabin is where you’ll find balls, games, hoops, stick, ropes and more, so you can make the most of the expansive grassy fields surrounding the play area. Psst…it’s an easy way to try out a new sport or rekindle a family fave. Pus, everything in the cabin is free to use during your stay. Score!

Daily Kids’ Activities
During the summer months, Suncadia hosts a variety of daily activities to keep little visitors and their grownups happy and entertained. From tie-dying t-shirts, to kite making, to sustainable crafting activities, there’s an outdoor adventure for every age and stage. Kids ages 4-12 who want to experience everything Suncadia has to offer “kids style” will love going to the Suncadia Junior Rangers program. The three-hour or full day sessions, led by a highly qualified and talented group of facilitators, include special programs, crafts, field trips, games, kayaking, canoeing and bike riding in addition to a healthy snack and lunch for full day campers. Plan your kids’ experience around your game of golf or spa treatment and you can thank us later! Three-hour sessions take place during the summer months from 9 a.m.-noon, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. and 6 p.m.-9 p.m. and full day sessions take place from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Cost is $40 to $70 per child.

A World Class Spa
Enroll the kids in Suncadia’s Junior Ranger Program and beeline it to the Glade Springs Spa for the ultimate R&R experience. This ahh-mazing spa not only offers four hot outdoor mineral baths of varying temperatures, but meandering creeks, rustic saunas and a fireside for relaxing. The spa also features a private women’s garden, complete with a hot outdoor mineral bath and spa and stunning views of the forest and mountain can be found from the common space inside. The spa offers massages, body work, facials and couples’ spa treatments focusing on balance, relaxation and rejuvenation. Need we say more?

Fuel Up with Good Eats
Suncadia offers several dining options to fit your family’s tastes and budget. The Coal House Caffe at The Lodge offers espresso, beverages, pastries, breakfast sandwiches and sundries as well as those little things you might’ve forgotten to pack. (Why does someone always forget their toothbrush?) At The Suncadia Club Swim & Fitness Center, the resort’s own food truck is conveniently parked next to the outdoor pool and offers salads, sandwiches and a variety of tasty treats. Portals Restaurant (pictured above) is a fine dining establishment at The Lodge that offers creative Pacific Northwest-inspired dishes and welcomes kids for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their yummy kids’ menu is specifically designed for ages 12 and under and offers lots of kid faves (think: chicken tenders, burgers and pasta with meatballs). Overlooking the Rope Rider golf course, Swiftwater Cellars Winery has a tasting bar, restaurant and pro shop. Bring the kiddos to lunch and enjoy the views as well as their flatbreads, sandwiches and dessert items. Psst…both Portals Restaurant and Swiftwater Cellars have large outdoor dining patios with spectacular views.

Amenities That Go Above & Beyond
Our favorite upside to all this activity is that you and your petite posse can enjoy some of the deliciously decadent amenities Suncadia has to offer, guilt-free! Say “yes” to sitting down for complimentary nightly s’mores around the campfire with your kid crew. From 7 p.m.-9 p.m., you’ll find all the fixings and skewers you need to roast up this summertime fave at each of the two fire pits on the property. Psst…we recommend picking up your s’mores kits at the front desk promptly at 7 p.m. (since sometimes they run out) and head to the fire pit near the 1,000 steps because s’mores and sunsets go together as well as marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate do!

75 Activities to Check off Your Summer Bucket List

Back-to-school shopping can be a tad overwhelming, are we right? And having the kids dress independently on a busy morning? A little daunting, for sure. Make it easier on everyone with a fashionable solution: a capsule wardrobe! We have the step-by-step guide you need to mix and match the right number of comfy, basic kids’ outfits. Scroll down to get started.

photo: Priscilla Du Preez via Upsplash

Step 1: Empty Closets and Drawers
We may not be able to follow Marie Kondo’s “KonMari” method to a T, but we can definitely manage a productive start with clearing out closets and dressers and taking an honest look at ALL. THE. CLOTHES. You’ll have an easier time seeing all that the kids really don’t wear anymore or have never really worn in the first place. And you won’t want to put all of it back.

Step 2: Weed the Wardrobe
Okay, it’s time to part ways with whatever isn’t going to end up in a capsule. Weed out the little worn as well as the outgrown, stained, or what can be otherwise donated, passed down or consigned. Pack it all up in respective bags, and get it out of the way. Hooray! You should now be able to see most of what you’ll be working with.

Step 3: Divide by Seasons
Okay, while we want you to aspire to the capsule, we will totally let you have two—one that can cover spring and summer attire and one for fall and winter. Deal? We are also giving passes to swimming or other sportswear, winter accessories, and dress-up duds and costumes because imaginations need styling too (You’ll have plenty of space leftover to organize these remainders.)!

photo: courtesy Primary

Step 4: Conquer the Capsules
Once you’ve narrowed that one massive mound down to two workable piles, it’s time for a little more math. There are various schools of thought on the ideal clothing ratio, but we think you should be able to complete an awesome everyday capsule with:

  • 5-7 tops
  • 4-5 bottoms
  • 1-2 dresses/fancy duds
  • 1-2 sweaters/hoodies
  • 1 jacket
  • 3-4 shoes
  • 2-3 pajamas

Lay out your options on the bed or floor and see what works with what. Choose tops that coordinate with any bottom or vice versa. And be sure to keep your kid’s absolute favorite dress or shirt (the ones worn nearly every day anyway). Ideally, shoes will work across the board as well, be they boots, sneakers, or sandals. Add leftovers to those respective bags.

photo: courtesy Youth Independent Party

Step 5: Fill in Blanks
So you’ve got it all narrowed down and realize you don’t have a sweatshirt that will fit for fall? Or there’s no way those handed-down T-shirts will make it through another season for a younger sibling? Rely on quality brands that cover the basics and shop those blanks without breaking the bank. Here are a few of our favorites:

Primary: Ideal for a capsule wardrobe, it’s committed to being free from “logos, slogans & sequins,” which is a big part of its charm and compatibility. Out of their stable of bright separates designed to be mixed and matched (and in many cases gender neutral), we particularly love their baseball tees ($16), pocket skirts ($12), and classic cardi sweaters ($24) and hoodies ($20).

Youth Independent Party: Made in Long Beach, CA of sustainable materials, this brand (nickname: YIP), is full of basics for kids ages 1 to 10 and encourages them to express their independent style. Upcycled and well made, these frocks will also go the distance, making some of these pieces suitable for growing with your kids from one capsule to the next. The gathered neck top ($12) can work as a slightly oversized dress layered over leggings before you use it as a straight top. Same goes for the kanga pocket sweatshirt ($20).

Madewell and Crewcuts: Did you hear?! Madewell teamed up with Crewcuts on a “matching mini collection” and it’s all kinds of adorable and versatile. Shop one of several looks for you and the kids online to check out the various ways its strawberry embroidered jean jacket ($69.50), for example, can be styled—surely inspiring capsule combos of your own.

photo: via Boden

Boden: If you want a similarly higher-end option for boys, too, catch a Boden sale. Its Breton collection, with bold stripes and fun color combos, is particularly capsule-friendly (the darling matching satchels their clothes come in make great storage bags too!)

Target: The price is definitely right when it comes to Target’s kids’ collections. When you stock up, you can often snag a BOGO deal, Target gift card, or extra Cartwheel discount in the process, too. And it’s a fun way to mix in a little flair with solid basics, whether it’s Junk Food Boy’s Mickey Mouse Short Sleeve T-Shirt ($12) or Cat & Jack’s Leggings Pants in rainbow stripe ($6). Target is also a great place to get a wide array of kids’ shoes for a song. So with little feet growing bigger seemingly overnight, you can make affordable seasonal sole upgrades.

photo: via Target

Step 6: Organize Leftover Space
Now, take a few steps back and admire all that hard-earned negative space! Without crammed closets and over-stuffed drawers, you should be able to hang the entire capsule in one quadrant of the closet or file it away in one dresser drawer. With a smart re-use of newfound free space, you’ll also be less inclined to fill things back up with more clothes! Here are some inspiring ideas:

  • Store your off-season capsule within reach, should the weather throw you a curveball.
  • Give the linen closet room to breathe by putting kids’ bedding and towels in their own closets.
  • If you always intend to rotate toys out so the kids don’t get bored with what’s out and about, use closet space to do so. You won’t have to dig into storage every time you want to switch things up.
  • Use rod space to finally hang those dress-up clothes and costumes.
  • Don’t have a mudroom or entryway storage? Line the bottom drawer of the dresser and put shoes there (you only have a few pairs now, after all!). So if your dresser has three drawers, you’ll put socks and underwear in the top, the capsule in the middle, and shoes on the bottom—giving kids an easy-to-reach, one-stop shop for dressing themselves head-to-toe.

Step 7: Maintain and Repeat
Once you find a brand or two you and the kids really like, you’ll have go-tos instead of guesswork when it’s time for a capsule refresh. To make replacements a little easier on the budget, shop brand websites for end-of-season sales, which is also a great way to get that Hanna Andersson dress and other more expensive brands at reasonable price points. Now that you know exactly what you’ll need, you can search strategically for those jeans and things needed for the next capsule—or two!

It’s still the middle of summer, but the school year approaches—and Walmart wants to help you be prepared by saving money without waiting until the last minute. According to a survey of Walmart customers, almost one-third of parents wish they could avoid the stress of last-minute back-to-school shopping without giving up deals and discounts. Back-to-school shopping at Walmart is a breeze with several new tools for parents.

Walmart has rolled out some new ways to make shopping faster and easier than ever. “Walmart has always been known for our low prices, but giving parents time back is also valuable currency when they’re deciding where to shop for all their back-to-school needs,” said Scott Bayles, Walmart’s Dean of Back-to-Class.

Walmart has expanded its awesome, easy-to-use School Supplies List, now available via the Walmart app. The popular service—which made its web-only debuted last year—allows parents to look up their teacher’s specific school supply list and find everything needed in-store. The expansion to the app makes it even easier to check the list and locate the store aisle as you shop.

If you don’t want to leave the house to shop you don’t have to, either: Walmart is offering free two-day shipping on the majority of its back-to-school items for orders over $35. The expansion of Walmart’s online grocery pickup and delivery service means you can also shop for back-to-school gear and pick it up without getting out of your car.

You won’t have to sacrifice style for convenience. Walmart promises to deliver on-trend items that kids want, with 25 percent of the store’s school supply assortment made of brand-new items—all of which are priced as you would expect from Walmart, with over 400 items just under $3.

Fifteen thousand miles is all that stands between your family and the greatest road trip you will ever take. A data scientist has just put together a road map that covers 47 National Parks in one gigantic loop across the country. Pack up the car and the kids for the road trip of a lifetime.

Visiting just one National Park can make for lifelong family memories, so just imagine the endless fun that can come from visiting every park in the continental United States in one phenomenal trip. Randy Olson, a senior data scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, has mapped out the very best route to scope out 47 parks, not including the 12 in Hawaii and Alaska.

The entire trip us 14,498 miles and takes about two months to complete if you drive fast enough and don’t hit too many potty breaks. In other words if you gas up the car and head out now, you can potentially be home in time for back-to-school shopping. Click here to check out an interactive version of the route map Olson created.
