Dog sled, snow tube, ski, luge, and kiss pent-up energy goodbye

While the holidays might have made a magical start to winter, your family is probably climbing the walls with cabin fever by now. A change of scenery can do wonders to shake off seasonal blues. Make incredible vacation memories, even in the cold. Here are ten spots for snow and ice adventures—no meltdowns (almost) guaranteed.

Dog Sled and Dine in a Yurt in Big Sky, Montana

Big Sky Resort

Watch your family’s spirits soar in Big Sky, Montana where snow-kissed mountains awaken a sense of adventure. Skiing is the name of the game at Big Sky Resort, the third-largest ski resort in North America, but you can also book a dog sledding adventure and share a candle-lit dinner in a backcountry yurt. Strap up a team of excited Alaskan huskies and mush through the mountains with Spirit of the North Sled Dog. Ride a snowcat up Lone Peak to a wood stove-warmed Montana Dinner Yurt. Your bellies will be cozy too, full of cheesy French onion soup, tender filet mignon, and Toblerone chocolate fondue. Live music accompanies the dinner, plus you and the kids will have a ball sledding in the torch-lit evening snow.

Snowmobile in Yellowstone National Park

NPS

Most roads in Yellowstone National Park are closed to car traffic from mid-December to mid-March, but you can zoom around the scenic landscape via snowmobile or snow coach. Sign up for a guided tour with Two Top Snowmobile Rental and spend the day gliding around the Old Faithful Geyser Basin or Grand Canyon of Yellowstone (December 15, 2022-February 28, 2023). Feel the snowy breeze on your face as you ride a single or double Ski-Doo past bubbling paint pots, herds of bison, and other natural wonders in the quietest time to visit the park. Full-day guided tours provide all the gear and park knowledge to allow you to fully geek out. Depart out of West Yellowstone, not from Big Sky and Bozeman, in a group of up to nine sleds.

Sleep in an Ice Hotel in Quebec City, Canada

Cortney Fries

If you’ve daydreamed about snoozing in an ice hotel, you don’t have to go as far as Sweden to make your icy visions a reality! Hotel de Glace is an unforgettable overnight experience outside of Quebec City, Canada. Each winter, a new ice hotel is built with a unique theme. When I stayed, it was a circus motif with carvings of juggling bears and jesters. There’s a slide, ice bar, hot tubs, and a sauna under the stars. Snuggle up in a cold weather sleeping bag and get some zzz’s on an ice bed in an igloo room. During the day, snow tube at the largest winter playground in North America at Village Vacances Valcartier (the on-site hotel), splash in the indoor water park, or play Pac-Man at the arcade.

Luge, Sled, and Ski in All-Inclusive Club Med Charlevoix, Canada

Club Med Quebec

The first mountain Club Med in Canada, the Charlevoix location opened outside of Quebec in December 2021. Seize your vacation days with unlimited ski-in/ski-out access, included childcare, ample activities, and almost endless food. Ski through forest or powder, ice skate, dog sled, snowshoe, or sled. Drink in views of the snowy mountain or frozen river while the kids splash around the indoor pool, partake in tournaments and games, or zen out with a hot stone massage at the spa, then retreat to a spacious family suite. Kids under 4 stay free. For an additional fee, take an excursion to a 4.66-mile luge course that will make you squeal with winter excitement.

Ride SnoGo Bikes and Cosmic Tube in Winter Park, Colorado

Winter Park Resort

Winter Park is only 67 miles outside of Denver, yet it is an epic mountain playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Shred like never before with a SnoGo ski bike. It’s like skiing on a bicycle, which might be an interesting alternative for those who are nervous about skiing or open to trying a different way to glide down the mountain. New this year, Cosmic Tubing is available Thursdays through Saturdays 5-7 p.m. Neon lights brighten the night as you and your family slide down the track. You can also ski and snowboard, tour via snowcat or snowshoe, ice skate, indulge in mountaintop après, and do sun salutations in mountain yoga.

Meet Minneapolis

Minnesotans know how to embrace the cold. Join them in one of the world’s best winter festivals, the Great Northern January 25-February 5, 2023. The U.S. Pond Hockey Championships and St. Paul Winter Carnival are part of the festival, which gives snow and ice center stage. Kids can race through 2-miles of winter obstacles in the Kidarod, an event inspired by Alaska’s dog sled race. Then warm your hands and hearts with indoor performances of music and dance. Interactive public art exhibits educate us on climate change, reminding us why low temperatures are important too.

Extreme Sled and Fat Tire Bike in Breckenridge, Colorado

PC: Breckenridge Tourism Office

Families flock to Breckenridge, Colorado for Rocky Mountain ski resorts and small-town vibes. This former mining town boasts killer slopes for skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and hiking. Have you heard of extreme sledding? Soar down Country Boy Mine’s high-speed sledding track. It’s over a half-mile long with twists and turns that will slather a smile across everyone’s faces. Don’t worry, a sleigh or snowcat will bring you back up to the top for three more runs. You can also tour the mine and pan for gold. Fat tire biking is an excellent winter challenge for those looking to try something new. Be warned, it takes some effort to balance on slippery snow trails but it can be rewarding for those that get the hang of it.  It’s best to try fat tire biking with a guide, such as one from Breckenridge Gold Run Nordic Center.

Aramark Destinations

Winter is an especially serene time to visit Yosemite National Park. Be surrounded by Giant Sequoias, massive cliffs, and frosty waterfalls. Feel like you’re in a snow globe as you skate around Curry Village Ice Rink. Drink in views of Half Dome as you glide across the ice, then warm up with s’mores around outdoor fire pits. Ski at the family-friendly Badger Pass Ski Area or take a guided snowshoe hike. The wintery weather reduces the number of visitors, but the temperatures should still be around 50 degrees with sunny skies.

Ski lessons are included for your whole crew and they’ll even get your preschooler dressed and on the slopes while you enjoy skiing in the Alps

If you’ve ever taken your family on a ski vacation, you know all the planning, packing, and schlepping that goes into getting your crew and their gear on the mountain (let alone DOWN the mountain). What if you didn’t have to do any of that? It would be a ski vacation dream. Enter Club Med. We visited their newest property in the French Alps right before it opened to the public this week and it’s pretty much the only way we want to do a ski vacation with kids going forward.

Not only are ski lessons included for the whole family at Club Med, but the staff will literally get your kids from their PJs into their ski gear and out on the mountain without any assistance from you. It’s all-inclusive taken to a whole other level and we are here for it.

Kate Loweth

Set in the picturesque French town of Val Claret, Club Med Tignes is a brand-new property with ski-in/ski-out access to some pretty epic skiing. Even before you arrive, you are being taken care of as a transfer from the airport is the first part of your all-inclusive stay. Whether you fly into Lyon or Geneva, it's about three hours to get to Club Med Tignes from the airport (but you won't be driving so you can enjoy the stunning views).

Kate Loweth

Families visiting this 430-room property will be impressed by the colorful lobby and seating areas, a cozy fireplace for gathering with friends, and bright graffiti art on the walls. Your bags will be whisked off to your rooms so that you can relax with a cappuccino or glass of rosé after your long journey. And don't worry, there are always snacks available whenever the hunger hits.

Kate Loweth

There are two restaurants on the property with a buffet-style option being available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the more upscale Gourmet Lounge available for dinner with a reservation. We definitely recommend that you have at least one dinner at the Gourmet Lounge so that you can enjoy local specialties like crozet risotto with pumpkin cream, and fondue that is meant for sharing.

The buffet restaurant is anything but the buffets you are used to stateside. Here you'll find crêpes with Nutella and thin omelets made to order for breakfast; and hot entreés like grilled fish and beef bourguignon for lunch and dinner. If they are offering raclette served over baked potatoes, snag some as it was the hands-down favorite during our stay. And, don't skip out on the gelato bar. It's available at dinner time and the mascarpone gelato topped with rainbow sprinkles was a favorite we enjoyed multiple nights in a row.

The Ski Experience at Club Med Tignes

Kate Loweth

It couldn't be easier to ski at Club Med Tignes. Skis, snowboards, boots, and helmets are all available at the ski shop on-site. You can make arrangements to have your gear ready when you arrive or reserve it when you get there. Each room has its own ski locker in the ski gear room that's opened with your Club Med wristband—the same wristband that gets you into your room. Here your gear will be stored and ready for you.

Club Med offers morning and afternoon group lessons for everyone aged 4 and up as part of the all-inclusive package. Teens can take a combo ski and snowboard class to get them exposed to both sports. Skiers and boarders are grouped by skill and head off with professional instructors to hit the slopes. If private lessons are more your speed, those can be arranged as well (at an additional cost).

If you bring little ones with you, you don't have to worry about getting them all geared up before you have to get yourself ready. Parents bring their little skiers down to the Mini Club in their PJs—literally. Mini Club staff will get them into their ski gear and out on the slopes while you do your own thing getting yourself ready.

Kids at Club Med Tignes

At Club Med Tignes, you can book your little ones ages 2 or 3 in Petit Club Med. Here they'll be taken care of by professionals while you hit the slopes or enjoy the spa. A limited number of kids in this age group can be booked, so it is recommended to make your reservation in advance.

Club Med Tignes also offers Mini Club Med for ages 4-10. With games, crafts, and even dress-up costumes available, kids will have the time of their life. For this age group, kids can move between activities as they choose which is great for siblings of different ages who feel more comfortable sticking together.

Pricing for Kids at Club Med

Kids under the age of 4 years old stay free at any family-friendly all-inclusive Club Med resort around the world. Kids between 4 and 11 years of age stay at 50% off the adult price, and kids between 12 and 15 years of age stay at 20% off the adult price.

Aprés Ski Activities

Kate Loweth

When you've finished your day on the slopes, head to the spa for a 20-minute back or leg massage to work out any muscle tension. Families will especially enjoy the zen vibes at the indoor swimming pool—the largest indoor pool in the Alps. There's a zero-entry mini pool for kids and a larger pool where you can even swim laps. Dunk your head underwater and you'll notice that there's even music piped into the pool! A sauna and Hamman are also available in the pool area, as is an outdoor pool for warmer days.

The fitness facility offers yoga and stretching classes, cycling, and more.

Nighttime at Club Med Tignes

If your crew can handle a later bedtime, you can enjoy all the evening shows and live music performances available on the main stage. The schedule changes by the day, so you'll want to consult the Club Med app for the day's activities.

Non-Ski Activities

Kate Loweth

There's plenty to do at Club Med Tignes, even if you need a break from skiing. Families can use their ski pass to head up the mountain via the funicular. You'll travel inside the mountain (kids will LOVE it) and make your way up to a gorgeous vista where a restaurant and snack shop serve up hot cocoa, mulled wine, crêpes, cheese plates, and more.

You'll also want to hop aboard the free bus that circles the town to check out the shops on the other side of Val Claret. Walk back along the lakeshore and take in the views.

Kate Loweth

Club Med Tignes is open in the winter for snow sport aficionados and also in the summer for families looking to enjoy the Alps in all their summer glory.

The Kids Club at Club Med Marbella

Club Med has had 70 years to perfect its Kids Club programming and its breadth of experience and constant honing of offerings are apparent.

Kids Club staff doesn’t approach this as a mindless babysitting gig. They dive in and really get to know each child: their strengths, dislikes, and what tickles their fancy. They’ve been trained to observe and react to the needs of each child.

Kids ages 4 mos.-17 yrs. participate in drop-off programming which includes an array of activities, including a wide range of sports, interactive games, swimming and water play, performance art, and group outings.

The Thrill of Circus School

Climb to the tippy top of a two-story platform and take a leap on a flying trapeze, testing your boundaries and impressing the kids with your sense of adventure. Trained staff guides flyers each step of the way in this ridiculously fun (and slightly terrifying) family bonding activity.

There’s Just So Much to Do at Club Med Marbella

If kids need a break from getting pruney in the pool and showing off their agility at Circus School, there are many other ways to tire them out. Next to the splash zone is a large playset, mini golf course, and a tot-sized zip line. Around the property, you’ll also find archery, table tennis, tennis, golf, volleyball, basketball, bocce, a mini soccer pitch, and fitness classes.

The Abundance of Food

The quality, range, and availability of food can make or break an all-inclusive experience. Club Med nails it every time by giving vacationers a taste of local cuisine, while also having a decent selection of expected staples for American travelers.

Club Med Marbella has two restaurants onsite. Tierra Gourmet Lounge is a traditional sit-down restaurant with table service that has a bar, wine tastings, coffee and late breakfast, and pre-dinner tapas stations. Suenos is a buffet-lovers dream come true with daily fish, meat, and pasta specials and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is also a special corner in Suenos dedicated to the appetites of young kids with soft foods and a room onsite filled with jars and pouches of baby food, toddler crackers, a bottle warmer, a microwave, a hot plate, and a refrigerator.

The Ease of the App

We’re in the era of “there’s an app for that” and Club Med is all in. Download the app for a village-level schedule of activities and classes, a property map, spa and dining reservations, and practical need-to-know info.

Club Med is known for its theme nights, so pay special attention to the “dress code” section. Heads up, you may think you won’t want to participate, but you will. It’s fun to look around at other guests’ interpretations of themes and feel a sense of cozy togetherness with other families.

Last, But Not Least: The Staff at Club Med Marbella

Club Med doesn’t refer to their properties as resorts or hotels, they’re villages. And, they use the it-takes-a-village approach when creating truly memorable experiences. You get the vibe the staff enjoys being there. It’s normal to see them before or after shifts interacting with guests, sitting for a meal, chatting up kids they know from Kids Club, and doing their best to make each guest’s experience better. It’s a beautifully unique element to a stay at Club Med.

If the thought of a ski vacation leaves you dreading all the planning and gear schlepping, these ski resorts are here to make the whole experience much more of a vacation

The days are getting cooler, and before you know it, it will again feel like we are living in a snow globe. But, just like the fun we used to have by shaking the snow globe and watching the little white dots floating around, it’s just as magical to glide down a mountain by ski, snowboard, or sled and experience the magic together.

Finding all-inclusive ski resorts is almost as tricky as finding bigfoot. In fact, Club Med offers the only true all-inclusive resorts, but there are a few that come close. These ski resorts are ideal for families because they offer a level of service that takes the pain out of schlepping all that gear to the mountains. Bonus: we even found some that have great deals for kids that make it much more of an affordable winter vacation.

Smugglers Notch Resort, Vermont

Smuggs stand out among hundreds of ski resorts because you could go here with a group of family and friends, and both the people who ski and those who don't would have a full day of activities. It's easy to see why it's considered America's #1 Family Resort, with robust on and off-hill programming for kids of all ages. From heated indoor pools with slides, hot tubs, nordic skiing, snowshoeing, arts and crafts, and in the words of little kids everywhere, a "zillion" activities. Even trying, it would be difficult to participate in all their activities in one visit.

Their Mountain Experience Package includes everything but the food and rentals, and with three mountains to choose from, there is something for everyone in the family.

Fun for kidsPicture your kids yelling at the top of their lungs while running towards their favorite place, and that is the FUN ZONE 2.0. Bouncy castles, an arcade, a climbing wall, ping pong, laser tag, mini golf, and games are all in one place. They kick it up a notch with nightly entertainment like magic shows and bingo.

While it might seem like toddlers are a little on the young side for Disney vacations, there's something that's so magical about seeing this age when they meet their favorite characters like Cinderella and Mickey Mouse. If you can plan a Disney visit before your little one turns three you'll save big as kids under age three get in free. We've got loads of other tips to save your some money at Disney here

Rent an Airbnb

Having a home base where you can cook meals and relax can be key when you are traveling with little ones who need naps. Airbnbs are a great option for families traveling with toddlers as it is much easier to get little ones to sleep when they can have their own space and you don't have to worry about waking them in a small hotel room. Check out this list of our favorite Airbnbs in every state as many of them come with cribs, high chairs and other toddler-friendly amenities.

This age is typically when peak dino obsession hits so we love the idea of planning a trip totally devoted to dinosaurs. Pack your pint-sized paleontologists in the car and head out on a road trip to visit Dinosaur National Monument in Utah, or hit up the National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. We've got a huge list of our favorite spots for dinosaur lovers, so check it out!

Kate Loweth

How about a vacation where getting there is half the fun? Train vacations can be fun at this age because the kids will love spotting all the sights out the window as you go. Get the full scoop on our favorite train vacations and book your next family trip on the rails.

If staying the night in a train caboose is more your speed, we've got you covered there as well. There are loads of train cars you can sleep in from a Northern California resort that's full of caboose rentals to a bed and breakfast in Minnesota where you can bunk down in a turn-of-the-century railway car.

Family Farm Stay

Shannan Rouss

Little ones will love a farm stay vacation because they can collect eggs, feed goats, pick veggies and get as dirty as they'd like. Parents will enjoy them too as they are already used to waking up with the roosters.

Aloha from the Aulani Resort

Disney Aulani with Kids

If a Hawaii family vacation is on your family wish list, consider making the Aulani Resort your destination. There are so many reasons why an Aulani vacation is epic from the family spa treatments to the interactive luau to the Disney magic that you'll find throughout the resort. With resort amenities like in-unit washers and dryers and pack n' plays in the closet, you'll have everything your family needs for a relaxing stay.

Make Your Way to LEGOLAND

LEGOLAND®

This really is the most perfect age for a visit to LEGOLAND. You'll have some of the amusement park rides on a smaller scale for the kids to tackle, plus you can go when the big kids are still in school to avoid the crowds. Check out all our LEGOLAND tips here

Best Vacations for Families with Grade Schoolers

Hit the Road

Once kids have passed the napping stage they are prime candidates for a family road trip. They can typically tolerate longer drives without having to make millions of pit stops and they actually enjoy the journey itself. Download a new podcast, stock up on snacks and you'll be on your way to some major fun.

Educational Trips FTW

South Dakota Department of Tourism

Kids in school love to learn. Build on that enthusiasm by planning your next family vacation to include spots that will make your kids smarter from historical monuments to places to learn all about fossils to observatories where you can learn about what's beyond our atmosphere.

Visit a National Park

Kate Loweth

There are so many great national parks in the U.S. that you'll want to visit as many as you can while the kids are still young (and willing). Grade schoolers will love learning about the history in these parks and they have the energy to go on decently-long hikes as long as you bring enough snacks. If you've got a fourth grader, your whole family can get a free pass to all the national parks through the Every Kid Outdoors program.

RV Camping FTW

While many families with babies and toddlers are brave enough to attempt the RV road trip, we think the grade school age is the best time to try it out. Kids are more willing to sit for longer periods of time and will actually enjoy the RV camping experience. This age is also prime time to try out a camper van because it's easier to share a smaller space with small kids instead of stinky teens.

All Day at the Waterpark

Great Wolf Lodge

This is the perfect age to book a family vacation at a waterpark hotel like Great Wolf Lodge. Kids will love the character encounters and there are tons of activities to keep the kids busy from storytimes to craft activities. Themed rooms will totally delight them and there are waterslides for every level of bravery.

Make It a Ski Vacation

Jeff Curtes/Squaw Valley

If you haven't taken your kids on a ski resort vacation, this is the time to do it. Grade schoolers can join group lessons to get the feel of the bunny slopes before they head out on more difficult terrain. You don't have to worry about leaving them for the day when they are with all their new friends!

Trips to Take with Middle Schooler and Tweens

Learn about Race

Legacy Museum

While it's essential to talk to kids about race at every age, middle schoolers can really understand the importance of the civil rights movement and how to respectfully explore other cultures. Plan a family road trip that includes stops where you can all learn a little bit about race in America. You'll be amazed at what important discussions these places bring to your family.

Explore Your Home State

Middle schoolers have already completed their year of state history so they can likely school you in all that is important in your state. A family road trip is a fun way to delve further into your home state's history with a visit to the state capital and other historic spots along the way.

Trips That Teach About Native American History

National Museum of the American Indian

Whether you are planning a visit to the National Museum of the American Indian or to one of the other historical sites across the U.S., middle schoolers (and parents) can learn a lot about our nation's first people through presentations, artwork and documents. Spend some time studying the important indigenous people in our nation's history as part of your next family vacation.

Go International

Kate Loweth

Middle schoolers will love the adventure that comes with an international trip and there are tons of options for exploring family-friendly international cities. Learn about a new culture, try some local food and soak in all that the country has to offer. Bonus: they are old enough to carry their own luggage.

Big Roller Coasters Are Fair Game

Giant Dipper

Once they pass the height requirements, middle schoolers are at the prime age for a big coaster amusement park trip. The question is, are YOU ready?

Yee-Haw for the Dude Ranch Vacation

Kate Loweth

We love a dude ranch vacation for all kids but especially those tweens. They'll be old enough for longer trail rides and will have the focus that goes along with activities like skeet shooting and fly fishing.

The Best Trips to Take with Teens

Make It an Adventure Trip

Wendy Altschuler

White water rafting, ziplining, canyoneering and surfing—these adventure trips are perfect for families with teens as they'll love the thrill that comes along with new experiences.

Go Big City or Go Home

While the business of the big city can be terrifying with little ones in tow, teens can totally handle the crowds, the noise and the traffic that comes along with a big city trip. They can also deal with the massive amount of walking that comes with a big city trip and can buy souvenirs with their own money. Win!

Hit the High Seas on a Family Cruise

Dennis MInty/Adventure Canada

Teens will love the freedom that a cruise offers as there are tons of ship-wide experiences that they can enjoy without parents coming along. Most large cruise lines offer a teen club where kids can hang out and tracking bands so you can find your crew when you need to. Even more fun for teens is an adventure cruise that combines shipboard entertainment with high adrenaline exploration on the shore.

Take in the Beauty of Alaska

The epic beauty of Alaska is something that teens will especially appreciate. Fishing experiences, dogsledding treks and hiking for days are high on the list of what Alaska has to offer. Plus, teens can really understand what a big world we live in when they see the immenseness that is our 49th state.
