Flip Flop Ranch

1. Flip Flop Ranch in Lucerne Valley, CA

Just two hours east of LA in Lucerne Valley, give your kiddos a taste of farm life at Flip Flop Ranch, a beautiful 40-acre working farm that features a bright and airy farmhouse and tons of fun activities for the whole family. After you wake to a friendly “cock-a-doodle-doo” from the resident rooster, take in some fresh air with a leisurely stroll through the surrounding desert, enjoy a memorable goat milking experience, or just spend some social time with the farm’s animals—horses, pigs, cows, lambs, sheep, barn cats, geese, ducks and the many endangered breeds of livestock the farm works hard to conserve.

The house has no Wi-Fi or TV, so it’s a perfect opportunity to pry kids’ eyes away from their screens and have them pick up a good book or jump into a riveting game of Rummikub. With nine beds throughout, there’s plenty of sleeping space for everyone, so bring along friends or extended family! At night, whip up a hearty dinner in the farm’s kitchen with full amenities and don’t forget to step outside for some serious stargazing before bedtime.

The only Los Angeles, California-based luxury oceanfront resort, Terranea is the best when it comes to stunning views, 5-star accommodations, family-friendly activities, and experiential dining

Located on the Palos Verdes Penninsula—a smooth 31 miles from DTLA—Terranea is LA’s best-kept secret. And while other nearby destinations may get a lot of attention (we’re looking at you, Palm Springs and Big Bear), no destination comes close to offering what Terranea has at its fingertips. Not only is there a roster full of activities to choose from (more on that below), it has four heated swimming pools to choose from. And not just heated a little bit like those “heated” pools you find in Europe. They are heated enough (according to some staff, they said it was 80 degrees) that swimming outside, in the middle of winter, is downright pleasurable. And that’s just the tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula—add to that 102 acres of explorable oceanside cliffs and trails, picturesque views of the ocean and Catalina island just across the channel, dining options galore, and a secluded beach all within steps of your room. Spoiler alert: You’ll never want to leave.

7 Unique Reasons Why You Should Stay at Terranea Resort

1. One-of-a-Kind Family-Friendly Activities at Terranea Resort

The resort offers so many things to do; they have an Experience Center to help you navigate all the fun things to do. Here, you can learn more about each activity and reserve what you’d like to do both on-and-off site. It’s the first place you need to swing by when you get here to get an overview of everything happening at the resort. If you need some help, talk to the Experience Concierge, who can help you plan your activities, make the reservations—and especially help with timing. Not only do they know which activities work best for all types of kids, but they also know the resort inside and out and can offer insider intel like the best spots to go stargazing.

everything you need to know about staying at Terranea Resort & Spa

Noteworthy Adventures at Terranea: When we say one-of-a-kind activities, archery class is just one of the unique possibilities you can explore. Add to that, a wonderful instructor who taught both my kids—and ended up getting multiple bullseyes along with a newfound appreciation for the ancient sport. There are also guided kayaking tide pooling adventures (you can also get a guided tide pool adventure without the kayaks if you have little ones), and a ton more activities to choose from, including horseback riding, tennis, golf, plein air art classes, etc…basically if you can dream it, it’s probably already here. Check the resort’s calendar for the full list of things to do in Terranea—including exclusive activities you won’t find anywhere else.

everything you need to know about staying at Terranea Resort & Spa

The Coolest Activity at Terranea You Don’t Want to Miss: Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, you can attend the free ‘Meet and Greet’ with the Falconer. This takes place just outside the Experience Center, and for 30 minutes, you’ll learn all about majestic birds of prey and how, since 2009, the resort has used the ancient art of falconry to provide a natural bird abatement program, making sure seagulls, pigeons, and crows stay (naturally) away. PS: You can also book a private session with the Falconer.

Good to Know: The resort’s activities are available to book even if you aren’t staying here! So if a stay isn’t in the cards at the moment, you can still experience all the wonderful activities exclusive to Terranea.

2. Kid-Pleasing Dining Options Galore at Terranea Resort

The resort has eight dining options—from oh-so-casual to downright elegant. For families traveling with small kids, here are our recommends.

everything you need to know about staying at Terranea Resort & Spa

For breakfast, we loved sea beans—a casual cafe where you can order specialty coffee drinks, grab-n-go muffins and croissants, or if you’re here on the weekend, order one of their made-to-order waffles with all the toppings your kid could ever desire. Yes, that is in fact, Oreos and M&Ms on a morning waffle—when on vacation right? Seating is cafe-style and outdoors—perfect for little ones who would rather run around and look for lizards.

Sea beans is also located next to the Experience Center, so after breakfast, you can go and peruse the activities for the day or if you eat late enough, you can wait for the Falconer to show up.

Good to Know: You can also get lunch, as well as beer, wine, and other sundry items here.

For lunch, head to Nelson’s or order pool-side from The Grill.

everything you need to know about staying at Terranea Resort & Spa

Nelson’s: This casual, cliff-top eatery has picnic-style outdoor seating right up to the cliff’s edge—you’ll get the glorious sound of the crashing waves below as part of your background noise. Nelson’s also has fire pits and is one of the best spots on the property for a sunset, so it’s also a great spot for dinner. What to order at Nelson’s: The Bavarian Pretzel, the Lobster Roll, Fish and Chips, and a S’mores Kit for dessert!

Good to Know: Make a reservation (especially if you want outdoor seating to take in the view). This spot is popular, and the wait times can exceed an hour if you don’t plan accordingly. Call 310.265.2766 for a reservation at Nelson’s.

Insider Tip: If you aren’t staying as a guest, you can still receive complimentary parking with validation from their on-site restaurants.

The Grill at the Resort Pool: If you’ve got a picky eater, this is the place to go—thanks to a menu full of kid favorites like hot dogs, burgers, quesadillas, and grilled cheese sandwiches. And with its poolside location, kids will want to stay here all day long.

We recommend trying two kid-friendly Terranea spots for dinner—Catalina Kitchen and Bashi.

Catalina Kitchen: While Catalina offers a la carte menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, we tried their seafood buffet dinner and it was a total dream for the kids. They were able to try lots of new things that they hadn’t had before—from crab legs to shrimp cocktail (plus a variety of bite-size desserts of course), but it was a great, low-pressure way to explore new foods.

Good to Know: Are you a fan of magic? Every first Friday of the month, renowned magician David Groves puts on a spectacular show at the Catalina Kitchen for adults from 10 p.m.-11:30 p.m. He walked around while we were eating dinner and put on a mini show for the kids, and, gotta say, it was jaw-droppingly good. Advanced tickets recommended.

Bashi: This Asian-style restaurant offers Chinese, Japanese, and Southeast Asian dishes, but the wow factor are the grilling tables. If this is your first-time table grilling, the friendly staff will walk you through the menu and help guide you—especially if you’re nervous about your items being cooked throughly. It’s a super fun, interactive experience. Best for kids who are good listeners and don’t wiggle around so much. Advanced reservations are required. Seatings are available daily (closed Tuesdays) at 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., and 8 p.m.

3. The Pools at Terranea

We mentioned it before, and we’ll mention it again. Heated pools FTW. And not just a smidge over the outside air temperature. Legit, heated to 80-degree pools (and handy glass-wall windbreakers). But that’s not all. There is a 140-foot waterslide at the pool, and a splash pad for little ones. And hot tubs. And cabanas you can rent! And lawn games like ping pong, Connect Four, and foosball! The list goes on and on. Seriously this spot has everything, and while we said your kids won’t want to leave, we’re confident the adults won’t want to leave either.

Good to Know: If you’re traveling here without the kids, there are adult-only pools that are equally divine as the main pool. And if you’re about to have a kid? Terranea Resort makes our list of best destinations for babymoons in LA!

everything you need to know about staying at Terranea Resort & Spa

4. The Spa at Terranea Resort

If you have time and the opportunity to step away from the family (read more about how kids will love hanging at The Kid’s Club below), head to the spa and indulge in one of their exclusive treatments. We tried the Citrus Glow Facial—a restorative treatment that nourishes, boosts collagen, and restores firmness, providing a renewed glow.

Insider Tip: Day memberships are available Monday-Thursday, for the use of The Spa amenities, fitness center, and pool for $110 per person. FYI: If you can’t get away for a girl’s weekend, this is definitely the next best thing.

5. Why You Should Book a Bungalow at Terranea

While hotel rooms are available at the hotel, they also offer specialty accommodations—think two and three-bedroom suites. And unlike regular hotel rooms, guests are treated to 1000+ square feet of space, a full kitchen, living room, and dining table, separate bedrooms (both with en suite bathrooms), plus additional amenities like a washer and dryer. Ideal for families—whether you’re traveling with babies or big kids, the extra space is a godsend, along with having access to a full-sized refrigerator, coffee maker, an in-room gas fireplace, and all the accouterments that give parents the best of both worlds—a luxe stay with all the needs they require from home (no need to cram in all those snack pouches in the refrigerator). We can’t but help mention the washer and dryer again—not that we want to do laundry on vacation, but babies (and big kids) have their accidents—it’s so nice to be able to clean those onesies before packing everything into a suitcase before heading home. The rooms come with patios (ours opened up onto a vast green lawn space that also overlooked the Pacific Ocean), open the door and the kids could run around all they wanted.

Good to Know: If you book a stay at one of the Bungalows, you’ll receive free access to the spa that includes the use of the spa pool and the amenities.

If you are looking for even more space, Terranea’s Villas & Casitas offer 1800+ square feet of space. And the 3-bedroom Resort Villas all come with a private hot tub (another godsend if you have a baby who is sleeping and you want to relax but can’t go to the pool).

6. The Kid’s Club

The Terranea Kid's Club at Terranea Resort & Spa

As well thought out as the rest of the resort, this Kid’s Club has it all to please both kids and parents alike. The facilities are clean and modern and filled with games, toys, and crafts that would delight anything your kid may be into. The staff is friendly, and offer loads of opportunities for outdoor games, science-based learning, feature films, and on-site field trips. (Full disclosure: My kid has never been excited by a kid’s club and this is the first time she wanted to stay). If that’s not an endorsement for doing a kid’s club right, I don’t know what is.

Good to Know: Meals and snacks are provided during various sessions.

7. Time Stops When You Visit Terranea

Not literally, of course, and not to wax poetic, but there are a few magical places where when you arrive, time slows down. I am happy to report that Terranea is one of those spots. So whether you spend the day, a weekend, or longer, and whether you like a lot of activities or just lounging around—it will feel like the best, well-spent vacation for both your time and money. And that is the magic that envelops this resort.

They’ll always be your kids’ favorite, so make sure they know it with these gifts for cool aunts & uncles

Maybe they have kids of their own; maybe they don’t. Either way, our own siblings always seem to end up being our kiddos’ favorite people on the planet. They’re just so much cooler than us, right? Younger, older, near, or far, it doesn’t matter. Aunts and uncles are where it’s at as far as our little ones are concerned, and we suspect (no, we know) that their adoration of their nieces and nephews knows no bounds, obviously. Even if they won’t admit it to us. So we’re on a mission to show them what they mean to us and to our kids with these gifts for aunts and uncles!

No matter what kind of aunt or uncle they are, we’ve found them something great. We’ve also made sure to include goodies that not only show them that we love them, but also that we know they’re a little more fun than we are (at least according to little eyes!). Our guide to gifts for aunts and uncles is going to be your go-to when you’re searching for something perfect.

This brand-new all-inclusive resort has a top-notch kids club, a gorgeous spa, and dining options the whole family will love

There’s so much that an all-inclusive family vacation can offer and the brand-new Royal Uno® All Inclusive Resort & Spa in Cancún tops our list of best all-inclusive resorts for families for many reasons. First, you can literally just show up and you’ll be guaranteed an amazing vacation—no planning needed. Cancún is an easy direct flight from much of the U.S. and the weather there cannot be beat. We checked out this new property, ate at all the restaurants, and visited the kids’ club and spa—all the intel is here!

The Royal Uno® property is gorgeous

Kate Loweth

Located in Cancún's Hotel Zone, Royal Uno® is less than 20 minutes from the airport. Make it easy on yourself upon arrival and have the property's on-site travel agency, Thomas More, organize your ride from the airport. That way you can avoid the overwhelming taxi queue with the kids in tow.

You'll feel like you've entered a vacation paradise as soon as you arrive at Royal Uno®with cool drinks and welcoming porters there to greet you. Check in and get your wristbands which will be your way to access your room for the duration of your stay. Send the kids to grab a crêpe or scoop of gelato from the grab-and-go coffee shop in the lobby; they'll be delighted that they can access these treats as much as they want throughout their stay (as parents allow).

Royal Uno® has 540 rooms with amazing beach views where you can catch the sunrise over Cancún's turquoise waters. Upgrade your stay with an Uno Suite that has a king-size bed for parents and a living room with two Murphy beds for the kids. If the beachfront suite is available, definitely go for it as you'll get a balcony with a hammock to lounge in and enjoy the waves crashing. You can even snag a beachfront room that has private access to the sand and your own whirlpool.

All rooms come with a mini fridge that's filled with water, juice, and beers, plus room service any time you wish. A Nespresso coffee maker will make sure you are well caffeinated throughout your stay (even when the kids wake up way too early).

The Beach at Royal Uno®

Kate Loweth

Shaded lounge chairs and a beach bar are available to Royal Uno® guests along the beach with easy access from the pool area. Lifeguards were present during our stay and they seemed very attentive to guests. Definitely plan to head out to the sand if you wake up early because the sunrises are pretty impressive.

Royal Uno Pools

Kate Loweth

The pools are the focal point at Royal Uno with plenty of space to spread out your towel and get some rays. You'll find a swim-up bar ready to serve that margarita or frozen lemonade. Near the swim-up bar is the snack shack where you can get pizzas made to order or snag kid-favorites like hot dogs and nachos.

Little ones will especially love the kids' pool and splash zone where they'll find slides, sprayers, and everyone's favorite—the dump bucket.

Adults should definitely spend some time at the adults-only pools that are located above Os at the Star Bar. You'll find this area to be a more chill environment with a few smaller pools and plenty of lounge chairs.

Kids Club & Family Room at Royal Uno®

Kate Loweth

Uno Kids
Uno Kids is the place to be for little ones ages 4-12. Open daily from 9 a.m-6 p.m., Uno Kids offers drop-off care for kids with fun activities like a piñata party, crafts, movies, treasure hunts, and more. Book yourself some time at the spa and send the kids to live their best lives at this massive Kids Club.

Cancool Family Room
The teens and tweens in your group will really love this game room at Royal Uno® where they can play foosball, ping pong, board games, and video games. The room is a great option if you want to get out of the sun for a bit and relax with other kids.

Dining at Royal Uno®

With seven dining experiences to choose from, Royal Uno® has a comprehensive dining experience that families are sure to enjoy. In-room dining is available 24 hours a day so you can grab a snack no matter what time the hunger hits. Os is your go-to for buffet meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a comprehensive international menu with fresh-made tacos topping our list.

More upscale options include Mexican cuisine at Palotine, Italian at Miramare, and Asian at Aora. Special event spaces are available if you are planning a birthday or anniversary celebration and we definitely recommend you try the teppanyaki experience at Aora during your stay as it is interactive and fun for the whole family. Tons of kid-friendly options are available at all dining options and you can always snag a pizza at the snack shack if that's more your jam.

Activites at Royal Uno®

Kate Loweth

In addition to having a large fitness room, Royal Uno® offers various wellness classes like sunrise yoga and water aerobics. If you need a little relaxation after your workout, book some time at the Alea Spa where you can enjoy the gorgeous outdoor steam room, cold plunge pool, and hot tubs before your massage. They also have a salon available for nail or hair services.

Off-Site Activities
If you want to spend some time off-property, the Museo Maya de Cancún is adjacent to the property and houses one of the most significant archeological collections of Mayan culture that you'll find.

A Mayan jungle tour is a fun way to see more of the surrounding area. Learn a little bit about Mayan culture before you head out on two-person speedboats through the Nichaputé Lagoon. You'll stop at the Nicuz Reef for some snorkeling before heading back to a delicious meal. It's a must-do activity for families, we promise!

There’s never a bad time to take a trip to this hidden gem in the Caribbean

Located in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea, Aruba may not have the name recognition the area’s more popular islands do, but there’s a reason Aruba boasts the most return visitors of any Caribbean destination. Known as One Happy Island, it’s the ideal vacation spot for families looking to escape the busy pace of life. But don’t let the slow down fool you. There are still tons of things for families to do in Aruba. So make sure your passports are ready to go as your island vacation awaits!

Where to Stay in Aruba

It’s easy to relax and settle into the slower pace of things from the minute you walk into the Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort Spa & Casino’s entryway. Expect to be greeted with a chilled glass of champagne, a fresh bottle of water, and a sweet bite while you check in. The lush grounds, calming waterfalls, and comfy seating areas welcome families in search of an escape. In no time at all, you and the kids will be feeling what’s known as the “Aruba Effect.”

Rooms at Hyatt Regency Aruba

When you’re traveling with kids, comfort and convenience are key; the Hyatt understands this. Whether you book a family suite, a view room, or connecting rooms, you can expect this (and more) at this family-friendly resort.

Consider the family suite if you plan to stay for a week (or more). It gives everyone plenty of space, with two bedrooms plus a living room (including a sofa bed), and a work area in its 849-square-foot space. The kids will flip for the bunk beds, and parents will appreciate the separate living spaces and wet bar that includes a mini fridge and coffee maker for your morning java. View rooms range in size from 380 square feet on the upper floors to 600 square feet on the lower ones. Like the family suites, they come with a mini fridge and coffee maker so you can stick leftovers in the fridge and make yourself a cup of coffee before heading down for breakfast in the morning.

Insider Tip: When it comes to bedtime for kids, the hotel quiet hours (from 8 p.m.-8 a.m.) make it easy. They won't have FOMO listening to folks running up and down hallways or splashing in the pool below, so everyone can get a good night's sleep.

Bring the kids to the Activity Pool

Many of the view rooms overlook the Hyatt’s stunning pools. The family-friendly Activity Pool, located in the main courtyard, boasts the tallest waterslide on the island, plus three distinct swimming areas, and a swim-up bar. You and the kids can easily settle in here each morning and spend the whole day playing and relaxing poolside if that’s what you crave.

Make a beeline for the baby pool. The shallow waters welcome kids of all ages, and it transitions seamlessly into the lower pool, where big kids can splash around and chase dive rockets nearby. When the kids need an exciting interlude, head to the waterslide for twists and turns that end with a splash. And remember, it’s not just for kids (although you do need to be taller than 42” to ride it).

When hunger strikes, simply flip up the orange flag on your chair and someone will be over shortly to take your order. There’s truly no reason to do much more than relax and have fun with the kids here.

Insider Tip: Don’t forget to bring your favorite pool toys, floaties, and towel clips on your trip. But if something doesn't make it in your suitcase, you can purchase everything you need to make pool time a blast at Red Sail Sports’ on-site shop.

Enjoy Trankilo–The adults-only pool

Just around the corner is Trankilo–Hyatt’s Regency Aruba’s latest addition. It’s the quiet reprieve every parent dreams of when they’re on vacation. Lounge along the infinity wall, with a drink in hand, and listen to the faint sound of water cascading in the background. Marvel at the iguanas as they crawl around the bright bougainvillea and pool edges. Chairs here are first-come-first-serve, but it’s usually not too hard to find a spot, even if you don’t make it down until mid-morning.

Insider Tip: Looking to treat yo’self on vacation? The Trankilo cabanas make pool time extra special. The shaded semi-private room comes with a flat-screen TV, a stocked fridge, seating for up to six people, and your own pool entrance. We’re thinking milestone anniversary or birthday spot splurge.

The Beach at the Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort Spa & Casino

Allison Sutcliffe

The Hyatt Regency Aruba is home to some of Palm Beach’s best shoreline. The water here is calm, inviting, and bathwater-warm, making it an ideal family play spot. It’s not uncommon to see kids building sandcastles and digging holes along the shore, while parents lounge nearby in the water keeping a watchful eye. When the kids want to take a dip, they can wade in with ease. The swimming area is roped off, keeping everyone safe from the busy boat waterways. Kids will love watching pelicans dive for fish in the distance, and they may even see a few fish swim by too. Floaties and pool loungers are welcome here, so remember to bring yours with you.

When you need a break from the sun and sand, retire to a palapa that lines the beach and provides much-needed shade and relief from the heat. Each palapa accommodates up to four people and is numbered so the kids can easily figure out which one is yours for the day. Families can also rent a beach tent ($75) for a bit more shade and space if they need it.

Insider Tip: Want to know one of our favorite Hyatt perks? Families can reserve a complimentary pool umbrella or beach palapa up to four months in advance (but don’t worry, day-of reservations are usually available too). Fee reservations are also available. Not having to race down every morning to snag your spot by the water means you can actually relax on vacation. Let the Aruba Effect take hold.

Restaurants at Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort Spa & Casino

Before hitting the pool or beach, bring the kids through the buffet breakfast at Ruinas del Mar. The buffet spans two rooms, and along the many tables, you’ll find all sorts of breakfast delights, from waffles and fresh fruit to eggs and sausage. Kids can choose their own fixings at the omelet station (always a hit), and go back for more if they need it. Once your plate is full, enjoy the Koi, swans, and lizards who put on quite a show by the waterside patio each morning. Ruinas del Mar is also open for dinner and features fresh fish, salads, and creative desserts.

Lunch or an early dinner at the resort is just as easy. Head to the Palms for casual island cuisine, with tons of kid-friendly options like wraps, salads, and pizza. Or pull up a seat at the Balashi Bar & Grill right next door for kid fare, like hot dogs, chicken tenders, and sandwiches. The Kadushi Juice Bar is another option, and especially easy if you’re lounging on the beach for the day. They serve acai bowls and healthy fruit smoothies until 5 p.m. each day. Our tip? Let the kids build their own fruit salad full of their favorites here for lunch. If grab and go is more your speed, the Shoco Market Cafe has got you.

Activities at Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort Spa & Casino

Each day you’ll find something different to do around the resort, with or without the kids. Early mornings at the Big Palapa on the beach are reserved for wellness. It’s easy to sign up for beach yoga, pilates, and energy healing. Taking a complimentary class is a great way to start your day. Afternoons are reserved for cooking and mixology. Kids can help prepare the light bites at the cooking classes, and they’ll have fun doing it, too. If you’re able, we highly recommend taking the mixology class. It’s a total blast. Be sure to check the Activity Calendar when you arrive to plan your extras. Signing up is easy–just scan the QR code from your phone.

Insider Tip: Moonlight Yoga is held once a month and it’s everything you imagine it to be. On the beach, under the moon, total tranquility. We’ve heard tales of older kids falling asleep during class. It’s that relaxing.

Kids Club at the Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort Spa & Casino

Family time at the resort is what you came for. But if the kids need a break from the sun (hello, air conditioning), or you want to relax at the Trankilo pool for a few hours, you can drop the kids off at the Kids Club. Here they can play (under the supervision of hotel staff) with all kinds of toys and maybe even make a new friend. Sometimes kids in the program will take field trips to the pool or play a game outside. Sign the kids up for a morning or afternoon and enjoy some time to yourselves for a change.

Insider Tip: If a night out without kids is more your speed, the Hyatt can arrange babysitting services for you. Stop by the concierge desk to make arrangements.

Even More Things to Do at Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort Spa & Casino

Get your fill of watersports

There’s a reason why the beach boardwalk behind the resort is lined with watersports companies. When you visit Aruba, you’ve got to take at least one water excursion with the kids. Red Sail Sports’ dock sits right behind the Hyatt Aruba Resort, and they offer tons of water and land experiences that really let you get to know this happy island. Spend the afternoon snorkeling with the kids at local hot spots, or sign up for an evening sunset sail, complete with steel drum band and an open bar (a great time to use the resort’s babysitting service). Or opt to explore the island by land. Red Sail Sports offers a Jeep safari, bus tours, and an ostrich farm experience for something a little different on your vacation.

Other watersports you can find along the boardwalk include tubing, jet-skiing, parasailing, e-hydrofoiling–if you can dream it, they’re sure to have it at Palm Beach.

Insider Tip: If you’re dying to try the island’s hottest new water activity, book a JetLev experience (must be 18 or older) with Red Sail Sports. You can walk, hover, and fly above the water once you strap into the jetpack.

a breakfast spot along the beach is a great things to do in Aruba
Allison Sutcliffe

Explore the beach boardwalk

Between the resort and the beach is the boardwalk. No matter which way you turn you’ll find shops, restaurants, and more resorts in either direction. If you need to take the baby out for a nap-time stroll, you’ll be in good company here. If you’re a runner, you’ll find others out before the heat of the day along this walkway. If you’re looking for a waterfront lunch spot or your morning coffee, you won’t have a problem finding either along this route.

Find things to do in downtown Palm Beach

If you head out the front of the resort you’ll land right in the middle of downtown Palm Beach. Either direction is lined with restaurants and shops that are worth exploring, especially on warm nights when the kids need to get out for a bit. The courtyard at the Paseo Herencia Mall has fountains, swings, a carousel, and carnival games set up that are fun for kids.

Insider Tip: You won’t need a car to explore this totally walkable area. And Aruba prides itself on how safe its streets are. But if you do want to get out beyond the downtown limits (hint: Eagle Beach is just down the street), it’s easy to find cabs waiting at the resort.

Best Restaurants in Aruba for Families

a plate of fresh caught fish from Wacky Wahoos in Aruba things to do
Allison Sutcliffe

Restaurants in Aruba are a blend of cultures and cuisines. You can find everything from Brazilian steakhouses and upscale French cuisine to Dutch pancake places and Italian restaurants. But if you’re looking to eat off-property, here are a few spots that are worth a look.

Keep it casual for breakfast and lunch when you hit Scott’s Brats, right next to the Hyatt. Known for its funky license plate decor and DIY Bloody Mary bar, you can’t go wrong with one of their breakfast sandwiches in the morning or a street taco for lunch. The same can be said about Eduardo’s Beach Shack. Head there for freshly made acai bowls, smoothies, poke, and vegan eats around lunchtime. Another breakfast hot spot, The Bread Basket, has delish breakfast sandwiches and coffee creations that really satisfy. And everyone raves about the fish sandwich at The Pelican Nest Seafood Grill, one of the restaurants set on the water.

Dinner is a different story. While you can definitely keep it casual, there are plenty of restaurants where you can dress up and make a night of it. Just a short walk from the Hyatt is Gianni’s, known for the best Italian food on the island. It’s best to make a reservation here (or plan on a wait), and their kids' menu features those reliable classics your kids will actually eat. If you’re craving fresh fish there’s no better place to go than Wacky Wahoo. You’ll find this little gem tucked a half-mile off the main strip. They don’t take reservations (get there early to avoid a wait), but they do provide a super casual environment that lets kids be kids.

If you’ve got a date night in mind, Papiamento is the place to go in Aruba.

When is the best time to visit Aruba?

people swim in the warm waters on a beach in aruba one of the best things to do in aruba
Allison Sutcliffe

Here’s the simple truth about planning your Aruba vacation—there’s never a bad time to go. With temperatures in the low 80s year-round, predictably sunny skies, and a reliable cool trade wind, it’s truly an endless paradise. Plus, it sits outside the hurricane belt, so there’s no need to plan around storms.

As for when to visit, February is the busiest month on the island, especially right around President’s Day, when many schools have a week off. You might see a few showers if you visit in late September or early October. But trust us, they’ll blow through in less than 30 minutes, as long as it’s a breezy day. Beyond that, expect to find temps in the low 80s from December through March, and higher 80s from May through October.

Tips for Traveling to Aruba

1. Since Aruba is part of the Dutch Caribbean, you’ll need a passport to visit. Travelers must also complete an ED card to get cleared for travel before entering the country. It’s an easy process and you can save your ED card to your phone once you’ve gotten the green check.

2. Another Aruba perk? There’s no real need to exchange U.S. dollars for Aruban Floran when you visit. Many places accept U.S. currency (and credit or debit cards). Our tip? Bring some cash, as many places are cash-only or give a discount when you use it.

3. No need to worry about language barriers here either. Although Papiamento and Dutch are Aruba’s official languages, most Arubans speak English and Spanish as well.

All the planning that typically goes into a family vacation is left up to the experts. Just show up with your swimsuits and appetites, ready for a real vacation.

Puerto Vallarta is just a short flight from much of the U.S. and it’s the ideal destination for foodies, parents, and beach-loving kids. Velas Vallarta offers massive suites, activities for all ages, an amazing kids club, and so much more. Peek our highlight reel below and then scroll on for the nitty gritty details.

The suites at Velas Vallarta are perfect for families

Whether you are planning a vacation with toddlers or teens (or even your extended family), Velas Vallarta has the suite for you. All rooms are condo-style with a kitchen that includes a coffee maker (KEY for early risers), microwave, cooktop, and full-size fridge. The two-bedroom suite has two bathrooms, a large living room, and a spacious deck. Bringing the grandparents along? Add on the attached studio room or go for an even bigger option to keep everyone happy. Some suites even have their own plunge pool!

All-inclusive means that your suite will be stocked with sodas, beers, bottled water, snacks, and pretty much anything you need when you get snacky. Room service is available 24 hours so you can get tacos and margaritas delivered immediately upon arrival from the airport.

Trust us, you are going to be spending all your time at the pool. Connected by a fun waterway, there are two main pools at Velas Vallarta. The activity pool has a swim-up bar, water volleyball net, and activities throughout the day like water aerobics. The other pool has a more tranquil vibe with loads of shaded lounge chairs surrounding it. There's even a mini pool for the kids right near kids club.

You can get drinks and food delivered to you poolside, which is pretty much the vacation dream. If you forgot your pool floaties or goggles at home, head to the shop in the lobby for everything you might need.

Sandy toes more your thing? The beach at Velas Vallarta is right beyond the pool and easy to access from your suite. Shaded lounge chairs are available if you want to set up camp for the day.

The Food at Velas Vallarta

Kate Loweth

In addition to 24-hour room service, Velas Vallarta has top-notch dining with plenty of variety for kids. For breakfast, head down to Restaurante La Ribera where you can enjoy Mexican favorites like huevos rancheros and chilaquiles while you watch the waves crash nearby. We recommend getting your lunch served poolside with taquitos topping the favorites list for both kids and parents. Upscale dinner vibes are on tap at Restaurante Andrea where the menu changes from Asian to Italian and more depending on the night.

Kids Club at Velas Vallarta

Velas Vallarta

Kids ages 4 to 12 can take part in activities through the on-site Kids Club, all included as part of your stay. With water balloon fights, stone painting, board games, and mini disco on the agenda, we know the kids won't want to leave. Kids Club hours run from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. with a break for lunch. You can even get in an early dinner sans kids if you want.

Activities at Velas Vallarta

Velas Vallarta

If keeping busy is how you enjoy a family vacation, you can definitely lean in to all the activities offered at Velas Vallarta like karaoke nights, circus shows, Spanish lessons, and crafts. Early risers can join in beachside yoga to set the mood for the day. While the kids are at Kids Club, book some time at the on-site spa for relaxation and rejuvenation. There are also tennis and pickleball courts, a fitness room, and a nearby golf course.

If you time your visit right, you might even get to join in a sea turtle release as there's a protected nest right near the resort!

Things to Do near Velas Vallarta

Kate Loweth

When you are ready to venture off-property, the hotel can arrange transportation to get you to the trendy Zona Romántica or wherever you'd like to visit. For a feel of a real neighborhood with a central square, church, and shops, head to Pitillal and spend a few hours walking the town. The kids will love all the paleta vendors (go for the melon for a refreshing treat) and you can snag some huaraches to bring home with you.

Getting to Puerto Vallarta and the Resort

Kate Loweth

Velas Vallarta is conveniently located next to Licenciado Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport and you can easily take direct flights there from Dallas, LA, SF, and many other U.S. cities. You can prearrange pickup from the airport with the resort for less than $20 and they will have VIP Transfers waiting for you upon arrival. This is key when traveling with kids because the airport can be a bit hectic and overwhelming after a long flight. A 15-minute ride will have you at the resort in no time with a margarita to welcome you.

The next time your family needs a digital detox, take an unplugged vacation that isn’t too far from Seattle

We all live a noisy life with plenty of distractions all wanting our attention. Sometimes it’s best to take a breather away from cell phones, computers, TVs, and video games and get back to nature while reconnecting with our families. Go back and enjoy the simple pleasures like playing card games, reading a book, napping for no good reason, and stargazing. Sure, the kids might pout at first, but they’ll find things to do in no time and will treasure these memories for years to come. But don’t take our word for it, plan an unplugged getaway in Washington this fall.

Get Away to Skagit Valley or Mount Adams

a family plays on a bed in a tiny camping cabin during an unplugged vacation
courtesy Getaway

Getaway is a unique glamping experience with Outposts located all across the U.S. Each cabin is basically a tiny home. On the outside, it’s a simple box shape with windows. Ah, but the inside is pretty great. There are one-bed cabins (one queen bed) and two-bed cabins (queen-sized bunk beds) with comfy pillows and clean sheets. (No sleeping bags needed!) Inside, the space comes with both heat and air conditioning, a kitchenette (with two-burner stove and mini fridge), a kitchen table and chairs, a hot shower and private toilet, a few good books, an old-time radio, and cell phone lockbox. Outside, you’ll find a fire pit with grill grate, two Adirondack chairs, and a picnic table. The accommodations are well planned, but keep in mind that these are cozy cabins. Fido can come too, but there is an extra charge.

There are two locations in Washington, but we can't tell you exactly where. You see, Getaway won’t reveal the actual location of your Outpost until the cabin is booked, but each is guaranteed to be a two-hour drive (or less) from its respective city. Here's what we do know. The Seattle Outpost is in Skagit Valley, and the Portland Outpost is located somewhere in Glenwood, Washington (about four hours from Seattle). Both locations are near a number of walking and hiking trails and are not too far away from activities that'll keep your crew busy and happy.

Vacation in the Air

airbnb.com

Who hasn’t dreamed of living in a treehouse? Located in White Salmon, Washington, the Klickitat Treehouse isn’t some rickety old fort. It’s a beautiful, 500-square-foot, two-bedroom home. You kids may not appreciate that it was built with a Scandinavian architecture design, but they’ll think that it’s cool nonetheless.

The living room features floor-to-ceiling windows with a view of Mount Adams, wood-burning stove, leather couch, and floor cushions. Plus who needs WiFi when you've got books and games here? Parents will appreciate the private bedroom with a queen bed and double pocket doors that open up to the living room. Kids will go crazy over the loft area with two queen beds and skylights. The house also features a full kitchen and full bathroom, but there is also a private outdoor shower too for use in the spring and summer months. It has both heating and air conditioning so you can rent it any time of year.

The wraparound deck features a propane grill, patio table, and Adirondack chairs. Down below you’ll find a fire pit and an old logging road trail that winds around the property. The treehouse is located about 20 minutes from the shops and restaurants of Hood River and the outdoor activities (biking, skiing, fishing etc.) at the Columbia River Gorge.

Lodge at the Lake

Allison Sutcliffe

Located in the Olympic National Park & Forest, Lake Quinault Lodge is the best of both worlds offering an unplugged weekend with nature while staying at a first-class resort hotel. Built in 1926, this waterfront property features 91 guestrooms with everything you’d expect to find there – except TVs. Before the kids frown, remind them that this Victorian lodge has an indoor pool. (Mom and dad will appreciate the sauna and fitness center too.) Play a favorite card game in front of the majestic fireplace in the main living room. Enjoy meals at the on-site restaurant, Roosevelt Room before heading out to do some fishing or paddleboarding on the lake. (Note: wifi is available here, but don’t tell you kids!)

In case you can’t find enough things to do at this resort, Lake Quinault Lodge is located near the Olympic National Forest, the Lake Quinault Museum, a number of walking trails and the Olympic National Park. Three mineral hot spring soaking pools offer a unique experience at Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort (although they are closed during the winter months). Boat tours are also available on Lake Quinault and Lake Crescent.

Honor a Deceptive Milestone

Deception Pass State Park is our state’s most-visited state park. This year marks the parks 100th anniversary giving you a good excuse to camp and celebrate. (Don’t have a tent? No problem. Washington State Parks has partnered with Arrive Outdoors where you can rent the gear that you need and have it delivered to your home before you go.)

The park is spread out over 3,854 acres with 172 tent sites and 134 partial hookup sites. Here you can you beachcomb along the Puget Sound beachfront and then walk only a short distance away to Cranberry Lake. Check out the Sand Dune Interpretive Trail (just 1.2 miles long) that covers a forested area, a marsh overlook and a native dune environment. If you have a little more gumption, walk up the trail to the Deception Pass Bridge or you can take your car around – we don’t judge.

The park is a great place to go geocaching during the day and s’more-making around the fire at night (not to mention ghost-story-telling!) From seagulls to squirrels (and the occasional whale or seal), chances of seeing some real wildlife is a distinct possibility. The town of Oak Harbor is just minutes away as is the Blue Fox Drive-In which is open all year round.

Wake Up to the Ocean

Located on Copalis Beach, Washington, Iron Springs Resort is close enough to Ocean Shores for a “quick drive into town” while also being far enough out to feel away from it all. Built in the 1940s (but clearly renovated since then), the resort is mishmash of both modern and rustic. There are 25 different-sized cabins on the premises that with lodging ranging from four to 10 people, and pets are allowed in most of them. Each unit is equipped with multiple bedrooms, full kitchen (with dishwasher), living room with fireplace or wood stove, and bathroom. Most have decks with barbecues and outdoor spigots and hoses to watch off Fido. And while they also have flat screen TVs with DVD players, making a 100 percent “unplugged” vacation a challenge, there’s no harm in watching a movie with popcorn before bedtime, is there?

During the day, the ocean is the star of the show which is just a short walk from your cabin. There are a number of hiking trails too. There is a general store that is stocked with just about anything you forgot back home. The beach is a good place to go fishing or clamming, and this resort offers a clam cleaning station and fire pit, as well as fishing licenses, if you need them.

Stay at a Non-Camper's Paradise

If you thought that KOA (Kampgrounds of America) was only for those with trailers and motorhomes, think again. Many locations also feature cabins to rent too. At the Pine Village KOA in Leavenworth, Washington, the campground offers a range of cabins to fit your comfort level, from the no-frills camping cabin (beds and mattresses only) to the deluxe cabins that sleep up to eight people, feature two bedrooms, full kitchens and bathrooms, decks with barbecues, and picnic tables. Where else can you camp that has a microwave and Keurig coffee maker? How about a ceiling fan and air conditioning?

As for the campground itself, it’s beautiful sitting above the river and surrounded by Evergreen trees. It features a swimming pool, hot tub, playground, snack bar, and planned activities throughout the year. Start the morning off right with crepes at the Cascade Café (open only during the summer months) before riding bikes around the campground. Take a short hike down to the river, or enjoy a day at the pool, only taking breaks to visit the Coffee Cabin for espresso, sandwiches, ice cream, or milkshakes. Make sure to leave time to visit the Bavarian town of Leavenworth which is always celebrating something including Maifest, Oktoberfest, and its Village of Lights.

Tips for a Great Trip with Kids:

1. Long drives can be less of a burden for everyone if you find something fun to do along the way. For younger ones, pack along some healthy snacks (carrot sticks, apple slices, fishy crackers, and juice boxes) handed out at different intervals. For older kids, pack a splurge treat as a surprise. Also, pack along a new coloring book or travel game. Of course, there is always the old tried and true ABC game or one of our other car game favorites.

2. If you are staying at a place that offers an outdoor fire pit, don’t forget makings for s’mores, but you can plan for dinner there too. Making hobo dinners is a fun family meal that everyone can make themselves. Create foil packets that contain a hamburger patty, chopped carrots, potatoes, and onions. Toss in some salt and pepper, fold up the edges nice and tight, and cook over hot coals.

3. Plan ahead for when the weather turns sour or boredom rears its ugly head. Pack along a jigsaw puzzle, craft supplies (like paints for the rocks found at the beach), or a brand-new card game no one in the family has played before.

When you’re looking for a weekend getaway that’s a level up from tent camping, these are the best book-worthy spots in CA

Got a hankering to leave city life and go camping nearby, but not convinced that braving the elements and setting up your own sleeping quarters with just a piece of nylon between you and whatever wanders around outside is your idea of fun? Let us introduce you to the good old yurt. “What’s a yurt?” you ask? Well, unlike pitch-a-tent camping, yurts are already constructed structures, adorably, in the round. Yurt means “home” in Mongolian so for those that don’t want to give up some creature comforts (like a good set of walls and an off-the-floor bed) but also want to feel at one with the great outdoors (whether it’s beach camping or perhaps a touch of a luxe campsite), this could be the camping answer you’ve been looking for.

Cachuma Lake Yurts

You'll relax at the lake and roast marshmallows at your very own fire ring while little glampers will have fun at the playground and the swimming pool during the summer months. Add to that, there are guided nature walks, guided lake cruises, and junior ranger programs the kids can join.

Good to Know: The yurts named Lupine, Poppy, and Sage are on the western side of the campground and get a spectacular sunset on most evenings. Oak, Sycamore, Pine, and Redwood (ADA) are on the eastern side and get a beautiful morning sunrise over the lake and boating marina. PS: There's also a country store in case you need any essentials.

Yurt Features: Depending on the yurt, these yurts sleep 3-to-6 people. Expect to find indoor lighting, heating and screened windows. Outside you'll find a deck, picnic table (some are inside), that previously mentioned fire ring, a charcoal bbq and water spigot. Restrooms and showers are located close by while a portable lavatory is located adjacent to some yurts for convenience.

El Capitan Canyon

Camping is downright easy with this adventure yurt at El Capitan. We aren't sure if the best part is the domed skylight for easy stargazing at night or the multitude of deer, birds, trees and other nature-like things that surround you during your stay. Make sure to carve time out for the 30-minute hike to the beach or a walk to feed the llamas and the goats.

Good to Know: There's a heated swimming pool, along with a playground with a slide, swings and jungle gym adjacent to the pool. And for parents? There is an espresso bar as well as local wine and beer in the Canyon Market.

Yurt Features: Includes a queen bed and a twin day bed with twin trundle, bar-sized refrigerator, microwave, ceiling fan and space heater. Adjacent restroom facilities include private shower stalls with attached changing rooms. All yurts include a private picnic table and firepit with grill.

Make sure to say hi to Kevin, the resident emu who loves being fed.

Good to Know: This spot is located within an hour drive of Hearst Castle, Cambria, Ocean Dunes, Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, local wineries, and Pozo National Forest.
