27 Books for Kids About Racism, Inequality and Injustice in America

When you have young children it is easy to forget that Los Angeles is a diverse culinary mecca. It’s time to stop sacrificing your beloved Indian food and Korean BBQ for chicken strips and burgers. Here’s a guide to our favorite kid-friendly global cuisine from where to go and what to order—everyone will be delighted, including all those developing tastebuds.

The Best Indian Food in LA with Kids

Best Indian Food in LA with Kids
Michael S. via Yelp

Kids might not appreciate the robust flavors in Indian curries just yet, but that doesn’t mean Indian food is out of the question. There are some great kid-friendly dishes. You just need to know what to order.

What to order at an Indian Restaurant for Kids: It’s hard to go wrong with fluffy and buttery bread, so always order naan. If your kids like chicken tenders or fish sticks, order chicken or fish pakora. Pakora means battered and deep fried…yum! Anything cooked in a tandoor, a special Indian clay oven, is a good choice, too.

Our choice for Indian? Tandoor-A-India in Playa Del Rey. They consistently serve flavorful curries and the kids always devour their chicken tikka. A friend recommended this restaurant and was raving about it, so we had high expectations going in. We were blown away—every single dish we ordered was fantastic. Saag Paneer, vegetable samosas, daal, mushroom masala, chicken tikka masala, special veggie rice and naan. Some of the best Indian food we've ever had, if not the best

The Best Korean BBQ in Los Angeles with Kids

best global cuisine in Los Angeles
LeeLee C. via Yelp

If your family eats meat, it’s time to visit Park’s BBQ in K-Town. Park’s is often recognized as the best Korean BBQ in Los Angeles and there’s a reason why—the food is delicious, service is fast, and the experience is interactive – you can grill your own food or have your server do it.

What to Order at a Korean BBQ Restaurant for Kids: The rib-eye Bulgogi, a Korean classic dish of thinly sliced marinated beef, is a favorite among children. It is the perfect combination of sweet and salty. Park’s Galbi, a boneless prime beef short rib, is another showstopper that can be ordered with or without Park’s top-secret sauce. Korean barbeque is traditionally enjoyed wrapped in lettuce like a little taco, but kids may prefer it with rice. Japchae, a stir-fry of glass noodles and vegetables, is another one of our favorite kid-friendly dishes.

The Best Persian Restaurants in LA with Kids

best persian food in los angeles
Claire H. via Yelp

Persian food is super kid-friendly thanks to loads of dishes featuring kid-favorite rice and grilled meats. We've got two destinations in LA for the best Persian restaurants to take your kids—Seaside Place Persian in Torrance and Darya in West LA.

What to Order at a Persian Restaurant for Kids: According to our insider, Negin Kamali, she recommends starting with kabobs like Soltani—a combination beef plate that is a combination of tender filet mignon (barg) and ground beef kabob (koodieh). You can also order the boneless chicken kabob—a nice alternative to beef.

And for the adventurous eater? Try a Persian stew like Fesenjan—grated walnuts cooked with pomegranate sauce, served with steamed basmati rice. Of course, you can't leave without trying the Bamieh (Persian  doughnuts) or bastani (Persian ice cream).

If All Else Fails, Start with Dessert

Best global cuisine in LA
SomiSomi via Yelp

Of course if your kids are a hard 'no' on trying something new not in their comfort zone, try to open their culinary world through the always acceptable dessert course. Our pick? Head to SomiSomi (they have locations in Little Tokyo, Koreatown, Santa Monica, Sawtelle, Glendale, Long Beach, Torrance, & Santa Clara so there's bound to a location near you) and order the "AH BOONG"—their signature goldfish-shaped waffle cone stuffed with choice of fillings (custard, taro, sweet red beans or Nutella) and soft serve–everything from traditional chocolate and cookies and cream to ube, sesame and matcha. Because delicious things (dessert or not) come in all shapes and sizes.

The tree-covered hills in southern Ohio are the perfect spot to capture the view, and since 1968, thousands of folks have gathered for three days of fun. There are four skyline drives to take in the beauty of the leaves: Buckskin Loop, Paint Vista Loop, Pike Lake Loop and Redbush Loop. Kids will love both the live pet show and the stuffed animal pet show (with categories such as largest, smallest, most unusual, most lovable), and the kiddy tractor pull. Adults will love the flea market, tribute bands, 5K run and more.

75 Big Awesome Things to Check Off Your Summer Bucket List

New Desserts You Need to Try This Summer

14 Virtual Festivals to Enjoy This Summer

The holiday season is upon us and that can sometimes equal family travel, and killing time at the airport with kids isn’t always a smooth-sailing joyride. But it can be tolerable—and even fun (ish)—if you know where to go. Here are the best places to eat, play and “go potty” while you’re hanging out at O’Hare and Midway.

photo: O’Hare Airport via Maria Chambers

O’Hare International Airport

Love it or hate it, traveling through O’Hare is necessary for most Chicagoans. Make the most of your time there by visiting the hidden-gem family attractions.

PLAY
In Terminal 2, you’ll find a restored F3F-4 fighter plane flown by World War II hero, Lt. Commander Edward “Butch” O’Hare. It’s a great photo opp and older kids will get a kick out of learning about the pilot’s life.

If your flight schedule doesn’t allow time to head over to Terminal 2, check out the small play area in Terminal 5 near Gate M12. There you will find “Play It Safe,” an educational exhibit sponsored by the Chicago Fire Department. It teaches kids about the importance of safety and the proper way to respond in emergencies.

A little-known fact about O’Hare is that one of the largest mounted dinosaurs in the world, a Brachiosaurus, can be found on the upper level of Terminal 1 in Concourse B. The four-story-high, 72-foot-long skeleton model is on loan from The Field Museum.

Lastly, put some razzle-dazzle into your wait with a walk through a light sculpture. “The Sky’s The Limit” is a 744-foot-long kinetic neon whirl of light and sound, and it can be found in the underground walkway between Concourses B and C in Terminal 1.

EAT
There’s no shortage of restaurants at O’Hare, but some are more kid-friendly then others. They’ve certainly upped their game the last several years, with familiar names like Publican Tavern, Frontera and Summer House Santa Monica. If your sweet tooth is kicking in, Garrett’s Popcorn and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory both have shops in Terminals 1 and 3 and TCBY calls the Rotunda in Terminal 3 home. For kid-favorite juice spots, Jamba Juice is located in Terminal 1 by Gate B7 and Smoothie King is in Terminal 1 by Gate B6. For healthy choices, head to Argo Tea Café in Terminals 2 and 3. In addition to selling coffee and tea, Argo offers vegan food options, parfaits, panini and salads. If you’re flying internationally, Goddess and the Grocer has fresh pre-packaged meals, including vegan options, that are quite good.

For more of a true Chicago restaurant experience, go to Tortas Frontera, a Rick Bayless joint in Terminals 1, 3 and 5. Share a griddle-baked torta with your little one, and don’t miss the fresh guacamole. If you have a morning flight, do yourself a favor and order a breakfast bowl (a.k.a cazuelas). You won’t believe it’s airport food. Another good bet is Wicker Park Sushi Bar in Terminal 2. Order the kids the California rolls and banana rolls (a great dessert) while you indulge in fresh nigiri as the last blast before you have airplane-food coma.

POTTY
Those of us who have tried to cram into an airport bathroom stall with a toddler know how uncomfy it can get. Problem solved at O’Hare’s family-friendly bathrooms, which offer more space and amenities than the average johns. There are 22 family bathrooms at O’Hare. Eight are in Terminal 1, four in Terminal 2, eight in Terminal 3 and two in Terminal 5. The bathrooms are all equipped with plastic seat covers and they are roomy enough to accommodate strollers and have space to set down luggage and diaper bags. If you’re in a bind, the Travelers’ Aid office located in Terminal 2 sometimes has extra diapers and wipes on hand.

NURSING MOTHERS
To find quiet and privacy when nursing, look for Mother’s Rooms in Terminal 1 at Gate B10, Terminal 2 at the crossover between Gates E5 and F9, in Terminal 3 in the Rotunda near the Yoga Room and Urban Garden, in Terminal 5 near Gate M14, and in the newly opened multi-modal facility on Lower Level (2).

photo: The Sky’s the Limit via Maria Chambers

BEST VIEWS IN THE HOUSE
Now pay close attention here because this is really all the kids care about . . . watching the planes do their thing. For restaurants with great views of planes landing and taking off, check out Berghoff Cafe at Gate C26 in Terminal 1, the Food Court at Gate C26 in Terminal 1 and Chili’s Too in Terminal 3 near Gate G10. To see planes grounded, hit up Tuscany Restaurant at Gate B18 in Terminal 1, Goose Island in Terminal 1 at Gate C10 and Terminal 3 at Gate K4, Argo Tea at Gate E5 in Terminal 2, Wicker Park Seafood & Sushi in Terminal 2 Main Hall, Chicago Cubs Bar & Grill in Terminal 3’s Rotunda and Macaroni Grill at Gate K2 in Terminal 3.

In Terminal 1, between concourses B ad C, you’ll find an extraordinary light show called The Sky’s the Limit that will keep even the most hard-to-entertain kids and parents mesmerized for at least several minutes.

STAY
If you have an early-morning flight you’re afraid of missing or a long haul to get there, consider staying at Hilton Chicago O’Hare. On top of being directly connected to the domestic terminals thru underground walkways, so you don’t have to deal with iffy Chicago weather, you also get spacious studio suites with a large sitting area, king bed and sofa bed, 42-inch HDTV, mini-bar, WiFi and on-demand movies and video games. Worried about trying to catch some ZZZs so close to the runway? Sound-resistant windows and blackout drapes will help with all that, so you can arrive bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at your final destination.

The newly built Rose Hotel Chicago O’Hare is the closest off-airport hotel to the airport and they just announced a Park and Go guestroom package. Starting at $129/night, guests can get overnight accommodations with complimentary parking for up to seven nights and free shuttle to and from the airport.

Midway International Airport

O’Hare’s quieter sister is less crowded. As a result, there isn’t as much to see and do there. Still, families will find enough good food and fun to bide the time before takeoff.

PLAY
In Concourse A, check out the exhibit about the WWII Battle of Midway. You’ll see 15 different videos about the war and how planes and pilots were battle-tested off the shores of Lake Michigan. A number of aircraft were lost to the Great Lake including the small SBD Dauntless dive-bomber hanging overhead; it plummeted in 1944 and was recovered and restored 50 years later.

Additionally, Kids Works near Gate B1 is a fun store for the whole family, and provides some entertainment with a wide selection of toys and games. You may not escape without having to buy your kids a little something, but at least this store will at least keep you busy for a bit.

EAT
The best options for food can be found along Concourse B. Nuts on Clark is a good choice for healthy snacks like dried fruit (perfect for when plane munchies strike). If you’re passing through Concourse A, head to Manny’s. This outpost of the South Loop deli has a kids’ menu including favorites such as grilled cheese and spaghetti, and a delicious corned beef sandwich for grownups.

Midway partnered with Premiere restaurant group and launched the Healthy Fare for Kids program. You’ll find antibiotic-free meats, whole grain breads, smaller portion sizes, lower salt, no deep-fried anything, local ingredients and non-sugared beverages in all Healthy Fare for Kids meals. The Healthy Fare for Kids logo can be spotted on the tops of grab-and-go containers in most restaurant coolers, primarily in Concourses A and B and near baggage claim.

POTTY
The bathrooms are equipped with changing stations and are roomy enough to accommodate large families and their luggage and family restrooms are available in all the Concourses

NURSING MOTHERS
For a tranquil, private space to breastfeed baby, head to Concourse C, next to the Yoga Room. You’ll find comfortable seating with a sink, wash area and a wall-mounted TV.

TIPS, NO MATTER THE AIRPORT

  • Be sure to double-check the bags your kids pack. Items even remotely resembling a banned item can hold you up in security. So, no toy guns, for instance.
  • According to TSA, formula, breast milk, juice, baby food and liquid medications greater than 3.4 ounces are exempt to the 3-1-1 liquids rule. Baby bottles and sippy cups are allowed, just be sure to remove them from your carry-on bag to be screened.
  • When looking for snacks to pack, consider dried fruits, nuts, granola bars, crackers, pretzels and cookies as opposed to creamy items, such as jams, peanut butter and yogurt, as those items are subject to the 3.4 ounce or less rule.
  • All strollers and car seats will be subject to the screening process, so be prepared to unbuckle the kids to send those items through the x-ray.
  • Kids under the age of 12 do not need to remove their shoes.
  • For the ultimate family travel hack, invest your time and money in TSA Pre. The amount of time saved in security lines is well worth the minimal hassle of setting yourself up.

If pristine white-sand beaches, a vibrant culinary scene and activities galore sound like the perfect recipe for your family’s next vacay, look no further than Sarasota. Located on the southwestern coast of Florida, Sarasota is one of Florida’s primary Gulf Coast cities that offers a little something for everyone and warm, year-round temps—making it the ideal destination for fun and sun any time of the year. We recently visited Sarasota and have all the details on where to stay, where to play and where to dine while visiting this slice of paradise. Scroll down to learn more!

Location, Location, Location!
Located about an hour south of Tampa and just north of Fort Myers, Sarasota County consists of Longboat Key, Lakewood Ranch, the city of Sarasota, Kido Key, Siesta Key, Osprey, Casey Key, Laurel, Nokomis, Venice, North Port, Englewood and Manasota Key. Together, they make up six barrier islands (each with their own vibe) and more than 35 miles of beaches. Those who might’ve visited grandparents in Sarasota back in the day will be shocked to find a whole new Gulf Coast city full of vitality, growth and abundant activities and experiences.

The Perfect Family Resort with Luxury Amenities & Five-Star Accommodations
Finding a luxury resort property that is also family friendly can come with many challenges. But The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota totally hits the mark by offering a sophisticated yet casual Gulf Coast vibe along with impeccable service, sophisticated surroundings, top-notch cuisine and activities and experiences for all ages. Book a Bay View Suite and take in the breathtaking views of Sarasota Bay and gorgeous Gulf of Mexico sunsets on the private balcony and enjoy the room’s spacious, beachy vibe that draws inspiration from the seashore.

In addition to access to a championship 18-hole golf course, a state-of-the-art fitness center, full-service salon and spa, large heated swimming pool and whirlpool and water activities on Sarasota Bay (think: stand up paddle boarding and canoeing), kids will find ping pong, air hockey, video games, billiards and foosball at the Cove located on the resort’s pool level. Kids can also check out board games at the Concierge Desk and participate in the resort’s Ritz Kids program which offers a variety of special services and vacation activities based on the program’s four pillars: water, land, environmental responsibility and culture. From learning about coral reefs and forests, to enjoying storytelling, art and food, kids will find a plethora of activities to make their stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota one for the books. Psst…the resort is known for serving special treats in its lobby like a complimentary s’mores bar with hot ganache. Need we say more?

Perks of Staying at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota
One of the best perks of staying at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota is access to the resort’s private Beach Club. Located just three miles from the hotel, this exclusive club sits on the beautiful white-sand beaches of Lido Key and offers hotel guests a private, quiet and exclusive Gulf of Mexico beach experience. Take a dip in the heated, zero-entry family swimming pool, relax in the Gulf-front Jacuzzi, enjoy poolside dining and participate in an array of distinctive Sarasota beach activities. The best part? You’ll never have to fight for a chair in the sand or worry about schlepping your towels and chairs to the beach. Note: complimentary shuttle transportation is provided daily to and from The Beach Club for guests of the resort.

Chill on Sarasota’s Famous Beaches
With over 35 miles of beaches, it’s no surprise that Sarasota’s coastline is a top attraction for both residents and visitors alike. Siesta Key consists of eight miles of sand and includes Turtle Beach, Crescent Beach and awarding-winning Siesta Beach (it was named best beach in the US by Dr. Beach in 2017 and received TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Award in 2015 and 2017). On any given day, Siesta Beach offers sparking Gulf of Mexico views, powder-fine white quartz sand and balmy breezes. Renovations in 2016 brought a paved pedestrian esplanade, an elevated concession stand and a beach-themed playground, making it even more desirable for families. Psst…check out the Siesta Beach drum circle every Sunday at sunset complete with dancing, hula-hooping and bongo drumming.

Lido Beach, located north of Siesta Beach, is another popular beach among families. Out-of-towners who frequent Lido Beach love if for its white sand (no water shoes needed here) and locals love it for its legendary concession stand lobster rolls. North Lido Beach also offers a pool for lounging and swimming and the southern end of Lido Key provides both Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota bayside beach access. In south Sarasota County, you’ll find Venice Beach which holds the title of “Shark Tooth Capital of the World” for its endless collection of prehistoric megalodon shark teeth. And Longboat Key, the northernmost and longest island along Sarasota’s coast, is where you’ll find 12 miles of shoreline and turtles who nest and lay their eggs there.

Must-Visit Family Attractions
In addition to gorgeous beaches and waterfront activities, Sarasota offers a variety of family attractions. The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is recognized as the official State Arts Museum of Florida and should definitely be at the top of your must-do list. Located just a few miles west of the Sarasota airport, The Ringling sits on 66 acres of bayfront property and houses The Ringling Museum of Art which includes 21 galleries of paintings, Cypriot antiques, Asian art, American paintings and contemporary art collected by American circus owner, developer and art collector John Ringling and his wife Mable.

The Ringling is also home to the Circus Museum and the only place in the country where you can view the world’s largest miniature circus (it’s a whopping 3,800-square-foot display that includes a big top with circus performers, performers’ living quarters and a dining tent). Take in all the action under the big top and view circus costumes, props, performance equipment and other artifacts chronicling the history of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Other attractions on the estate include Mable Ringling’s Rose Garden and the spectacular Ca’ d’Zan which was the winter home of John and Mable Ringling.

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is another must-visit Sarasota attraction. Originally the home of William and Marie Selby, the Botanical Gardens showcase a living collection of rare and beautiful tropical plants in a variety of garden settings, including an awesome Children’s Rainforest Garden that offers natural space for discovery, exploration, learning and play. Other notable family attractions include the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, the Big Cat Habitat & Gulf Coast Sanctuary and St. Armands Circle, a quaint, laid-back shopping center that boasts a European vibe and offers more than 138 different shops and restaurants around the Circus Ring of Fame. From trinkets and treasures to high fashion and home décor, you’ll find it all on the Circle.

Dining Options at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota
If you book a Club Level room at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, you’ll definitely want to take advantage of the daily food and beverage offerings in the Club Lounge. From traditional breakfast fare and create-your-own paninis and salads to afternoon snacks, evening hors d’oeuvres and decadent deserts and pastries, you’ll find spectacular variety and impeccable service at the Club Lounge from sunup to sundown. Psst…a variety of sodas, juices, bottled water and coffee are available in the Club Lounge 24/7 along with fruit, cookies and candies. If you’ve got a crew of grazers, this is the only way to go!

In addition to the Club Lounge, The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota offers award-winning dining options at its resort and Beach Club. Located right on the resort’s marina is where you’ll find Jack Dusty, a nautical-inspired restaurant, lounge and marketplace known for its delicious seafood, local cuisine and laid-back ambiance. Savor freshly caught Gulf shrimp, Sarasota Cioppio or Jack’s Ceviche (one of our favorites) and sip on signature crafted cocktails. (Psst…try the Siren made with Reyka Vodka or Hendricks Gin, Elderflower Liqueur, lemon, simple syrup and a prosecco topper served with grapefruit, cranberry and orchid ice cubes which make the drink change colors as it melts!) At The Beach Club, Ridley’s Porch offers locally inspired dishes and cocktails and sits right on the beautiful white-sand beaches of Lido Key, giving families an all-encompassing beachside experience parallel to none. (Note: the restaurant pays homage to the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle, one of the smallest and rarest sea turtles, which can be found nesting on the beach May through October.) Start your meal off with deep-fried avocado bites, barbecue octopus and shrimp ceviche and end it with the restaurant’s famous carrot cake and out-of-this-world butterscotch bread pudding. You can thank us later!

Additional Places to Indulge Your Taste Buds
Sarasota County is home to a host of award-winning dining establishments and five craft breweries. If you’re looking for traditional Spanish fare, Columbia on St. Armands Circle is a must-try. A Florida tradition since 1905, Columbia is known for its Spanish dishes packed with fresh seafood and tender pork, chicken and rice; it’s bean soup with chorizo; and its delicious hot Cuban bread. Everything on the menu pairs well with a pitcher of fresh sangria (made tableside) and Columbia’s legendary 1905 Salad, also prepared tableside with its to-die-for garlic dressing. Psst…if you visit before mid-May, you can order fresh stone crabs chilled, steamed or broiled with Latin spices. De-lish!

If a quaint, sophisticated dining experience is what you crave, Indigenous (housed in a cozy old bungalow in the Towles Court arts district) offers innovative, carefully sourced American cuisine. Chef Steve Phelps opened Indigenous in 2011, and since then has honed his reputation as one of the region’s most inspirational and educational chefs. The menu is inspired by Chef Phelps’ passion for food, the planet and the community. From Parmesan Beignets and Smoked Fish Sea Saltine Nachos, to Gulf shrimp and grass feed burgers, Indigenous uses perfectly executed techniques and carefully sourced local, sustainable and seasonal ingredients to give guests a unique and conscious dining experience.
