No parent has the time or energy to entertain their kids all the time—that’s a tall order, especially when you’re dealing with toddlers. That’s where movie nights (or mornings, or afternoons) come into play. And while the screen-time guilt is real, not all films are created equally, so we came up with a list of the best movies for toddlers that offer simple, valuable lessons about friendship, teamwork, and kindness. The plots are straightforward, and the visuals, dialogue, and songs are all engaging enough to hold your toddler’s limited attention. So throw on one of these family-friendly flicks and cuddle up with your budding cinephile (or use this time to get some chores done). We know they’ll be a hit. (Curious about which films to watch when they get a bit older? We’ve got those, too.)

Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: An Underground Rock Experience

Fashion has never been more fun, as an adorable mole rat named Wilbur discovers the joy of clothing, much to the dismay of his community who would never dare not to go bare. When his bandmates in the Mole-ing Stones discover his sartorial secret, they want to turn him over to authorities only to receive a surprising serving of justice.

Where it’s streaming: HBO Max

Why it’s great for toddlers: Aside from the catchy tunes to rock out to, kids will learn–and adults will be reminded–to embrace self-expression and the things they love, despite what others might say. The story telling is top notch as it’s penned by former Sesame Street writer Mo Willems.

Encanto

Travel to Colombia and meet the Madrigals, a multi-generational family living in a magical home that bestows powers on all its inhabitants—well, everyone except Mirabel. Feeling lost and confused over not being blessed with a special gift, Mirabel searches for a purpose, and finds one after discovering that her familial home is in danger of losing its magic.

Where it’s streaming: Disney+

Why it’s great for toddlers: Colorful, musical and magical are just a few adjectives to describe this Disney instant classic. Be prepared to listen to pretty much every song on repeat (Lin-Manual Miranda's tunes have reached "Let It Go" status). Some themes might be a little tricky for young minds to grasp (namely feeling inadequate and like an outcast), but overall kids will learn to believe in themselves and their abilities and that families can work together to overcome obstacles.

Sing

Sing is a good movie for toddlers
© Universal Pictures

When koala Buster Moon is faced with the deterioration of a theater he runs, he comes up with an ingenious idea, a singing competition. The competitors are all animals, each with their own personality and unique voice (think a stay-at-home pig who desperately needs something for herself, a stage-shy elephant with an incredible voice, and a gorilla hoping to make his own way in the world). The film’s characters are voiced by Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, and Seth MacFarlane, among others.

Where is it streaming: Amazon Prime, Hulu (with Live TV)

Why it’s great for toddlers: Parents and kids will notice popular songs that are featured on playlists and the radio, and many toddlers may even be able to sing along with the adorable animal characters. Lessons on believing in yourself, the importance of friendly competition, and supporting others will please parents who can help younger viewers pick up on these themes throughout the film.

Your kids’ top rescue crew returns in this sequel to PAW Patrol: The Movie. This time around, a meteor crash lands in Adventure City and magically gives Chase and his friends superpowers. After learning that a meteor-obsessed mad scientist named Victoria Vance wants to steal their powers for villainous means, the crew jumps into action to do what they do best: save the day.

Where it’s streaming: Paramount+

Why it’s great for toddlers: It’s filled with a cast of familiar characters that your tot already loves, and stays true to the PAW Patrol formula. That being said, there are a lot of action sequences that result in loud noises and characters being in peril, so some children might find it distressing. In addition to themes of teamwork and perseverance, tiny patroller Skye shines as she reminds kids that even the smallest pups can make a huge difference.

Where it’s streaming: Apple TV

Why it’s great for toddlers: Just like the series, important lessons are gently delivered for young minds so as not to overwhelm them. While the importance of teamwork to reach a goal is front and center, the topic of climate change and its ripple effect on communities is explored in a way that little minds can start to understand.

They are heading to an audition for a Broadway show and need help from passersby and viewers when they get lost.

Where it's streaming: Paramount+

Why it’s great for toddlers: The songs are engaging, and toddlers will want to dance and sing along. With the same format as the television show, young viewers can follow the paw print clues right along with Blue and Josh, involving toddlers in the journey. Parents will also enjoy the message that dreams can come true and may find seeing previous hosts Steve and Joe a nostalgic bonus.

So with his friends by his side, Migo leaves the grounds of his village to see what other wonders might exist in the world.

Where it’s streaming: HBO Max

Why it’s great for toddlers: Simply said, yetis are cool! And Channing Tatum does a great job making Migo so likable that you can’t help but root for him. That being said, just a head’s up that there is some tension and mild fighting between humans and yetis whenever they meet. Oh, and the soundtrack is also stacked with sing-along friendly tunes by Zendaya and James Cordon.

Up

Where it’s streaming: Disney+

Why is it great for toddlers? They’ll learn to embrace new adventures from Carl and Russell and you’ll be reminded how much this movie makes you cry. Do you ever look back on your childhood and marvel at the boundless imagination we had as kids? How we could turn a pile of blankets into a fortress, create a fictional world in our backyard, or befriend an invisible pal?

Now, imagine if these fantastical realms and magical beings you made never actually disappeared and instead have been waiting around for you to remember them.

In the upcoming summer, family film IF, this magic is front and center, and those creative daydreams become a reality—making the impossible become, well, possible!

From the creative mind of writer and director John Krasinski, IF follows Bea, a young girl who discovers she has a special power to see all imaginary friends (a.k.a. IFs) ever created. As she embarks on a fulfilling quest to match these forgotten pals with new kids, Bea and her newfound friends venture out on an exciting adventure of imagination and self-discovery.

Backed by a cast of comedy gold like Ryan Reynolds and Steve Carell, this charming, live-action animated film is full of laughter, heart, and a much-needed reminder that the magic of childhood wonder is never truly lost.

Moms and dads, get the popcorn buckets (and tissue packets!) ready because IF is going to be the perfect, family-friendly flick to kick off summer.

Bea (played by Cailey Fleming) and Blue (voiced by Steve Carrell) come together in this adorable film.

A magical adventure for all ages

In the heartwarming tale of IF, a girl named Bea (Cailey Fleming) experiences some hardships when she discovers she has a unique gift of seeing imaginary friends, called IFs for short. But Bea isn’t the only one with this special power; Cal, who is played by the ever-so-witty Reynolds, also shares this special ability.

Unsure of what to make of this gift, Bea teams up with Cal to help these former companions after they’ve been forgotten by their original kids who grew up. This leads the duo to go on a match-making adventure that’ll unite each IF with a new kid who also needs friendship and comfort.

Throughout their journey, we see the true power of believing that anything is possible and the ultimate joy of tapping into one’s creativity and imagination.

Ryan Reynolds as Cal and Cailey Fleming as Bea star in Paramount Pictures’ IF.

Laugh out loud with this star-studded cast

Adults and children are in for quite the comedic treat, as IF boasts a lineup of Hollywood’s finest like never seen before. With Reynolds leading the charge as cheeky Cal and Krasinski taking on a triple-threat role as writer, director, and Bea’s lovable Dad, the movie already promises everything we’ve come to know and love from their past performances.

But the movie doesn’t stop there. Adding to the star power are Fiona Shaw as the wise Grandmother, Alan Kim as a curious boy named Benjamin, and a host of talented comedians lending their voices to the colorful mix of imaginary friends, like Steve Carell as the super huggable Blue and Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the delightful Blossom.

With Emily Blunt, Blake Lively, Awkwafina, Matt Damon, George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, Keegan Michael-Key, Sebastian Maniscalco, Maya Rudolph, and Amy Schumer rounding out the stellar voice cast, IF is sure to be a hilarious cinematic experience.

Bea tackles an adventure of a lifetime alongside a group of unique IFs.

Inspiring lessons on imagination, belief & self-discovery

We love a family film that’s loaded with relatable life lessons and themes, and IF surely doesn’t disappoint. As Bea tackles her journey alongside Cal and a supportive group of IFs (like a flaming marshmallow, a life-sized gummy bear, a completely invisible pal named “Keith”, and a robot), she learns the beauty of unlikely friendships, but most importantly, rediscovers the magic within herself.

Audiences of all ages (we’re especially looking at you, grown-ups) will also appreciate the gentle reminder that sometimes, all it takes is a little imagination to see the extraordinary that exists around us. And when life gets hard or if we get caught up in the mundane day-to-day tasks of life, we must remember that our hopes and dreams never leave us; we can always go back to them to bring out the spark inside of us.

Blossom, voiced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is a butterfly-like imaginary friend.

Experience nostalgia, heartfelt moments & family fun

Nothing beats a family movie loaded with feel-good moments and jokes parents can appreciate. IF delightfully blends nostalgia (calling all of the adults who fondly remember their own IFs, like myself!), heartfelt scenes, and family-friendly humor to evoke the power and joy of embracing our childhood wonder.

The movie also touches on the impactful message about the importance of love and connection, which Bea experiences as she forms new bonds with all of the IFs. Of course, adding to the film’s appeal is the witty dialogue and playful antics that result from an impressive cast coming together on the big screen.

Don’t miss out on the chance to see the world in a whole new way this summer! IF hits theaters on Friday, May 17, so set your calendar reminders and snag your tickets early.

To keep the creativity flowing at home, kids can draw their very own imaginary pal and bring it to life through this special IF generator website that’ll make their creations come to life!

If you’re anything like us, there’s a good chance you’re currently sitting in a room in your house surrounded by your kids’ stuff. Toys. Socks. Is that a fork? It’s just… stuff. It accumulates so fast, and there isn’t always time to neatly organize everything. Storage baskets are our favorite hack for faking it. They keep everything off the floor so we can get to all of it when we have a minute. And they can look so good.

These storage baskets are a great combination of storage and decor, plus we made sure that they’re durable and will hold up to having blocks tossed into them or little hands digging for a marker. Woven baskets? We’ve got them. Storage baskets with lids? Look no further. Modern metal baskets? Absolutely. There’s something for every room in this list so you can start your 2024 off tidy. Kinda. We’re calling that a win.

2. Act Out a Book

While reading a book together is always a good idea, acting one out could be even more fun. If your toddler has a favorite book they’re obsessed with, dig into the dress-up box and have them try to act out a live-action version.

3. Play Simon Says

Play this old favorite but with a twist. We love using Simon Says to help pick up a messy room. Simon says, “Put your toy in the chest” is a parenting hack that clears clutter while entertaining toddlers.

5. Act Like an Animal

Get wild with this one! Ask your child what their favorite animal is and encourage them to play a quick animal action game.  Challenge your child to move like the animal, running, crawling, leaping, lumbering, or slithering like a furry, feathered, or scaled friend.

6. Play Hide-and-Seek with Stuffies

If you don’t have the energy to squeeze behind the couch or want to play hide and seek in a small space, try playing with one of your toddlers’ favorite stuffed animals.

7. Throw a Bath Party

Ain’t no party like a bathtub party! Turn off the lights, toss in the glow sticks and bubble wands, and crank the music.

8. Play Eye-Spy

It’s a time-tested classic and a traditional game that just about every child plays at some point or another. It’s also easily adaptable, requires no materials, and takes almost no time to complete. Put a twist on the same old game and set up your “I Spy” with a theme. Pick a letter (all things that begin with “B”), a color (only purple objects), or any other focus that your kiddo can dream up.

9. Have A Puzzle Marathon

Break out two or three of your toddler’s favorite puzzles and set a timer to see how fast you can complete them all.

10. Play Florist

Collect branches, ferns, and a few blooms and arrange them in a pretty vase or jar. Toddlers also love playing shop, so make believe you’re their first satisfied customer.

11. Play Follow the Leader

Get creative with the classic “follow the leader” game. Choose a theme (such as acting like animals or moving like snowflakes), create super-silly walks, or explore outside with a follow-the-leader nature walk.

12. Create a Card for a Loved One

Surprise a friend or relative with a homemade card from you and your toddler. They’ll have fun stamping, coloring, and creating a fun design, and the recipient will be thrilled with the surprise mail.

13. Wash Windows Together

Their willingness to help with household chores wanes as they get older, so take advantage of your toddler’s excitement for spraying and wiping and get some sparkling windows in the process.

14. Tic Tac Toe

When it comes to toddler activities, the paper and pencil version of this classic is always fun. Or try spicing it up by hunting for objects to serve as x’s and o’s.

15. Play Red Light, Green Light

Strengthen their listening skills with a quick game of Red Light Green Light. In addition to being fun, you can talk to your toddler about the importance of following instructions, a skill their preschool teacher will certainly appreciate.

This may be true every year, but this time, we mean it: 2024 is THE year of the sequel. It appears nearly every film-favorite character—from Michael Keaton’s nostalgic bio-exorcist to Jack Black’s kung fu-fighting panda, to Disney’s Kings of the Pride Lands—is furthering their storyline on the big screen. No bother to us, though—we are here for it!

Ahead, we break down the new family movies in 2024 that you and your littles can enjoy together. They start early next year and continue through the ball drop, so no matter when the kids utter those dreaded two words, “We’re bored,” there’s a family-friendly title just waiting to whisk them away to another time and place. Plus, we all know there’s nothing a bucket of buttered popcorn and a great story can’t resolve.

"Robot Dreams"

Arcadia Motion Pictures

Spanish director Pablo Berger's Robot Dreams was a surprise nominee at this year's Oscars. It lost the best-animated film award to The Boy and the Heron, but that doesn't make it any less magical. About a city pup who orders a companion robot to stave off loneliness, the '80s-set musical has little dialogue but oodles of charm. It's one of those viewing experiences that will entertain all the eyeballs in the room, but go a step further with the adults and have them crying buckets.

Starring: Ivan Labanda, Albert Trifol Segarra, Rafa Calvo, Jose Garcia Tos, Jose Luis Mediavilla, Graciela Molina, and Esther Solans

"The Untitled Karate Kid Movie"

In 2010, producers resurrected the beloved, butt-kicking '80s franchise with a modern retelling of a fish out of water who embraces the teachings of a kung fu master. Fourteen years later, the dōjō is again open for big-screen business. Fans of the martial arts franchise are probably familiar with Netflix's Cobra Kai, which has continued the Karate Kid-verse with aplomb, so it will be interesting to see how the new movie ties into those events—if at all.

Walt Disney Studios via Instagram

The story of Mufasa picks up after the events of the original, with Simba parenting a cub of his own. It also serves as a prequel, as it looks back on the legend of Mufasa, the original king of the Pride Lands. Another of Disney's live-action films, this one will also be styled with photorealistic, computer-generated animals, like the 2019 version starring the voice of Beyoncé. Fingers crossed Queen Bey is on the marquee for this soon-to-be hit, too.

Starring: Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and John Kani, with more to come.
