Get Away

Got a little more time (and childcare) and want to get away? Consider one of these options for extended day time adventures, full day trips, and quick overnights that are (relatively) safe during the pandemic.

Head to Hood River

Hood River offers families breathtaking views of the Columbia River and the Cascade Mountains. You have hiking trails, fascinating museums, and wine country surrounding you. Book your love nest at the  Hood River Hampton Inn & Suites right off I-84, in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. This hotel is just five minutes from central Hood River and within a mile of waterfront restaurants, bars and parks. You can spend your whole day, overnight, or weekend away strolling around the waterfront enjoying great bites and views, or you can head in town and do some shopping. For more ideas on what to do and where to go when you are in Hood River, read more here.

Visit Astoria

Enjoy an overnight or weekend filled with adventure, art, museums, and maritime fun in Astoria.  Located right on the river, The Bowline Hotel may very well be the most romantic spot to stay on the Oregon Coast. Don't let the industrial aesthetic fool you. This gorgeous spot is a sardine cannery that has been turned into a lux hotel that  is home to 40 rooms that feature plush king beds, luxury linens,  flickering fireplaces, tubs and French press coffee to start your mornings with. It's also home to a romantic bar and eatery called The Knot. The Knot Bar offers guests locally sourced menu items that are Scandinavian-inspired and pay homage to Astoria's seafood history. When you aren't snuggling in your plush room or enjoying next-level bites and sips, you can stroll through the town and enjoy shopping in one of the many eclectic shops. Or check out a museum or the Astoria column. To fill your romantic getaway itinerary, read more here.

Where to Find the Best Hot Chocolate in Town

It’s a Date! 8 Parent-Baby Playdates in Portland

There’s a lot of great things about living in Chicago (the people, the sports teams, the hot dogs, the best pizza in the world) but let’s face it, the winters leave a bit to be desired. Cue Four Lakes Alpine Snowsports in Lisle for some much-needed winter fun for the whole family just 45 minutes west of Chicago. From ski and snowboard lessons for beginners of all ages to a challenging terrain park for the most adventurous of boarders, Four Lakes is the close-by cure for your winter blues.

The Basics

Maria Chambers

Four Lakes has been turning ordinary flatlanders into bona fide skiers and boarders through its Ski and Snowboard School programs for sixty years. A member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America, Four Lakes’ teaching methods are up-to-the-minute, reflecting the latest technical understanding and methodologies. Their experienced instructors make learning how to ski and board fun and safe, so you can rest assured that you and your mini snow carvers are in good hands.

Why It's Great for Budding Boarders and Skiers

Four Lakes is a great starter hill for kids with a budding interest in snow play. The facility itself is very small and is perfect when you're just looking for a couple hours of exhilarating fun, but aren't necessarily wanting to make a weekend of it. The hill little ones learn on is small, but not so small they get bored quickly. It'll take a couple of tries to master, but the tow rope makes getting to the top easy-peasy. Best of all, there's ample parking right at the entrance of the hill, so no lugging equipment (or tired skiers) too far.

Insider tip: If you're planning on hitting the hill regularly, we'd recommend investing in a pair of gloves with grippers on the palms. It helps little hands grip the tow rope and protects the gloves from tearing.

Ski School. . . Not Just a Great ‘90s Movie

Have a budding Bode Miller or mini-Lindsey Vonn on your hands? Four Lakes offers lessons for all ages and skill levels, both for skis and snowboarding. For the 2021-22 season, these lessons will be private or semi-private to reduce contact students have with each other on the hill. One-on-one private lessons are $60/hour. Semi-private lessons will be limited to 2-5 students per class and run $35/hour. Both private and semi-private lessons are typically available 7 days a week.

Small, but Mighty

Four Lakes isn’t just for beginners. It's a great place to brush up on your skills before that vacation to Vermont or Vail. The entire area is open to skiers and snowboarders of any level, and they also offer race training for skiers and a terrain park with a variety of boxes, rails and pipes. Whatever your level of experience, Four Lakes can accommodate. Just ask any one of the 20,000 skiers and boarders who visited last season.

Day and Season Passes

You can purchase a season pass for $325 and rip it up on the pow pow (translation: ski or snowboard) from mid-December until the season’s over—usually late February or early March. Can’t commit to the whole season? Buy a daily pass when you get the itch—those range from $24-$30, depending on the day.

Birthday Parties

During non-COVID times, Four Lakes is a great place to throw a winter birthday party. The kids will enjoy getting outside in the fresh air for physical activity and you'll enjoy not having 15 kids in your home. Choose a package that includes slope tickets, lessons and rentals or any combination of the three. Pizza and unlimited soda are an additional fee, and they’ll block out a section of the cafeteria for your celebration.

‘Tis the season, so bundle up, grab your brain buckets (translation: helmets) and head to Four Lakes for outdoor fun this winter.  Be sure to check their website to make sure the hills are open.

We love a quirky Airbnb, from treehouses to lighthouses. Now there’s a new list of “the most popular weird Airbnbs” and it features some gems close to home and abroad. Our favorite might be the giant seashell in Mexico!

U.K. site Confused.com put together this list and the top pick is the Bubble Suite. The domes are located in Mexico’s wine country and get an average of 4.8 stars. At $215 a night, they’re not exactly cheap, but they’re perfect for a kid-free getaway or celebration.

If you’d rather hit up Hawaii, check out the Dreamy Tropical Treehouse. It’s an adult-sized treehouse featuring panoramic views of a tropical jungle. It only sleeps two people for $300 a night, but it’s still a steal by Hawaii standards. Enjoy being totally off the grid!

Finally, don’t forget that giant seashell. Head back to Mexico and Isla Mujeres to rent The Seashell House, aptly situated near the beach. It’s $299 a night and it’s big enough to bring the whole family, plus it offers a private pool!

There are plenty of other gems on this list, including a private island in Belize, a super cheap recycled hideaway in Brazil and the Cube House in the middle of the Netherlands. Which one will you pick to add to your travel bucket list?

10 Airbnbs Near Our Favorite Theme Parks (because They’re Open Again!)

The Most Amazing Airbnbs for Families in All 50 States (& DC!)

This “Star Wars” Airbnb Is the Perfect Place to Stay on Your Disney Vacation

Home is where the heart is… but after spending a bit too much time in our abodes this past year and a half, many families are itching for a change of scenery. And there’s no better way to take in the sights than an epic journey on the open road. This holiday season, take your crew on the ultimate family adventure in an RV. Thanks to RVshare, you can rent a ride that’s just right (think: Airbnb for RVs!). Here are five reasons to try it:

Outdoor Travel Is More Appealing than Ever

Pandemic life has inspired many families to create memories in the great outdoors. So it’s not surprising to see more RVs on the roads (or parked around the neighborhood!). From affordable pop-ups to luxury motorhomes, RVshare is the largest RV rental marketplace with 100,000 listings across the US. Whether you’re heading to a campground, national park, festival or getaway off the beaten path, there’s a rental to provide the comforts of home while you explore nature’s most beautiful sights. (Fun fact: RVshare renters traveled more than 40 million miles this summer!)

You Want to Take a Trip, but Aren’t Interested in Air Travel

No security lines, no flight delays, no problem. From visiting extended family for Christmas to going camping, families love the ease of getting to their destination on their terms in an RV. Depending on the vehicle size and type of amenities you’re seeking, the set-up can check all the right boxes when it comes to comfy travel. Many boast well-equipped kitchens, cozy spots to hang out and nap, space to play games and roomy seats to simply gaze out the window and daydream.

The Bucket List Winter Getaway Is Calling Your Name

During wintertime, many popular domestic destinations are less crowded than the summer months. Now is the perfect time to check off bucket list locations like the Grand Canyon, Zion and Yellowstone. Families also love the campsites at Disney Fort Wilderness for a unique stay. To make long trips even easier, renters can select an RV with the option to have it delivered to their home before traveling, or to have it delivered to their final destination.

You’ll Have Happy Campers

Want to go camping? No need to pop a tent and brave the cold (unless you want to!). According to a survey just released by Wakefield and RVshare, 62% of campers prefer RVing to tent camping. More than half of the campers said they felt better protected from natural elements like wild animals and weather in an RV. So pack your warm sweaters, hiking boots, supplies for s’mores… and set up your home away from home!

It’s a Great Way to Try Before You Buy

Whether you’ve always wanted your own RV or are newly obsessed with this mode of transport, renting from RVshare is a smart starting point. Simply book and pay through their secure platform. Rest assured that there’s 24/7 emergency roadside assistance on every booking and a worry-free rental guarantee that offers payment and fraud protection.

There’s something extra special about getting away from the daily grind and being with your favorite people as the world whizzes by on the road. Ready to round up the gang and take an RV for a spin?

Inside Airbnb’s Latest: Sleep in the Last Blockbuster (Only 3 Stays Available!)

The Most Amazing Airbnbs for Families in All 50 States (& DC!)

Summer may almost be over, but don’t let that stop you from planning a nearby glamping vacation with the kids. It’s easy when you Getaway, and even easier now that families can make a reservation at Getaway Skagit Valley, opening this fall. Located just one hour north of the city in Mount Vernon, Getaway’s newest spot will give families the chance to unplug and recharge at a tiny cabin in the woods. Here’s what you need to know to make your family plan!

The Ultimate Un-camping Experience

Allison Sutcliffe

If it’s possible for a vacation destination to have an ethos, Getaway has one. It takes everything families love about camping—being outside, spending time together and cooking over a campfire—and combines it with a philosophy of rest, relaxation and rejuvenation that allows you to get away (see what they did there?) from it all. We think you and the kids will settle into your peaceful forest retreat in no time thanks to Getaway's philosophy and design.

Your Tiny Cabin in the Woods

Allison Sutcliffe

While Outposts have a number of campsites, they’re spaced so each one feels like its own nature refuge, and the “all hours are quiet hours” request helps set the peaceful mood. Keeping cell phones in the cell phone lock box frees you up for low-tech activities you’re always trying to do more of anyway, like reading, journaling and playing games with the kids. Plus, there’s something comforting about the cabin names (Morris, Mildred and Estelle to name a few); they're named after grandparents of staff and guests.

How to Stay at Your Getaway

Allison Sutcliffe

If low-key is the vacation vibe you’re striving for, there’s no better place to do it than at a Getaway cabin. Each one is designed with staying put in mind. It starts with the cabin’s inviting picture window that practically begs guests to curl up with a good book and ends at the Adirondack chairs surrounding the fire pit right outside your door. Everything families need to relax is within reach, right down to the deck of cards, retro radio (and suggested local stations) and books that encourage mindfulness and simplicity found in each cabin (psst…How to Get Away, written by Getaway founders Jon Staff and Pete Davis, is one). And if the kids need to stretch their legs, a quiet stroll around the grounds or along an on-site walking trail is a welcome change of scenery. Make the most of this peaceful place by packing books, games, journals or a point and print camera to truly experience Getaway as it’s intended.

Get Out & Explore Washington

Allison Sutcliffe

The Seattle Outpost
While it’s easy to unplug at the cabin, exploring local wonders is easy too. And with two Getaway Outposts in Washington, Seattle families have choices.

The soon-to-open Skagit Valley Getaway in Mount Vernon is an unbelievably easy vacay option, especially for families. Set on 69 acres, families can book one of 9 cabins that sleep 3-4 (or plan a parents-only getaway at one of the two-person cabins).

Clocking in at around an hour north of the city, families will find so many places to explore once they get there. Not only is it situated near apple picking, pumpkin patches and the colorful Tulip Festival farms (blooming in April), but it's an easy hopping off point to explore Deception Pass. Be sure to put local hot spots like Little Mountain Park, Edgewater Park and the Children's Museum of Skagit Valley on your list of places to visit when you venture beyond the comforts of the cabin.

Allison Sutcliffe

The Portland Outpost
The Mount Adams Getaway is located in Glenwood, Washington, and while it's about two hours outside of Portland, it's a sold four hours from the Emerald City. But don't let the drive discourage you from making the trek. It's well worth it. From this Outpost, families can embark on exciting adventures like exploring the Guler Ice Caves, hiking Conboy Lake or tackling the rapids of the White Salmon River (kids 6 & up can ride). All of these adventures are just a short drive (15-40 minutes) from your home base, and are only a sampling of the many you'll find in the area. No matter where you’re staying, the folks at Getaway have curated a list of nearby spots that are worth a look.

Travel in All Seasons

Getaway

Unlike traditional camping, Getaway is an any-time-of-year destination. Each cabin comes with heat and A/C so families can hunker down and stay warm, even on Washington's rainiest days, or stay cool on a warmer-than-usual summer night. No need to rely on a cross wind to cool off your tent here. Plus the kitchenette means you can make meals when campfire cooking isn’t in the cards, thanks to the weather, and roast s’mores when it is.

The Comforts of Home

Allison Sutcliffe

Part of the charm of these undeniably cozy cabins is that they seamlessly blend homey comforts into nature. Hot showers, a kitchenette (with a retro mini fridge and two-burner stove) and a front door that locks are all perks that make this easier than tent camping and a step up from other glamping experiences. The queen-sized bed tucked along the picture window is something parents will especially appreciate because it means a good night sleep for everyone.

Cabin & Campfire Cooking

Allison Sutcliffe

When it comes to cooking, you’ve got a few options. Cook simple kid-approved meals using the provided pot and pan in the kitchen. Quesadillas, pasta and veggie stir fry are one-pan meals that are hard to beat. Or try some of Getaway’s chef-created suggestions. If campfire cooking is more your style, you’ll find a fire pit right outside your door (and a gas stove if burn bans are in effect). Heading into town is another option—check the local guides for suggestions near Mount Adams or Mount Vernon.

Tips to Getaway with Kids

Getaway

Getaway cabins are designed like the best RVs and boats around—everything has its place, and there’s not too much room for extras. You won’t find space for things like a pack-n-play or a high chair. Instead consider packing a travel bed and portable high chair if you need them. Remember to put other kid basics like diapers, wipes, sippy cups and favorite stuffies on your list. Many of the 4-person cabins have lofted queen beds, so keep that in mind if you’ve got tots in tow. Before you head out the door, check out Getaway’s other tips for traveling with kids.

Good to Know:
1. Since traveling during COVID is a concern, it’s reassuring to know that Getaway is socially distanced by design. Families receive check-in (and other important) information via cell phone so person-to-person interactions are eliminated. You can see what other cleaning protocols and trainings are in place here.

2. Remember to download all necessary info (including the Outpost map) before you reach Getaway, as there’s no WiFi or cell service.

3. Getaway is a dog-friendly destination so your pandemic puppy is welcome on this trip.

4. Getaway has partnered with One Tree Planted to help support reforestation. Every time a Getaway is booked, a new tree is planted.

You’ll find Outposts within a two-hour drive (or less) of many major U.S. cities, including eight locations on the East Coast (between New York and Atlanta) alone. Texas has three Outposts all to itself and in the Midwest, you can check out the recently opened Chicago spot or the one in Cleveland. On the West Coast, there are Outposts in Los Angeles and Portland, with a Seattle location coming soon. Find your nearest Getaway online.

Getaway

Locations in: Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Nashville, NYC, Pittsburg, Portland and Washington, D.C.
