Find out the best Costco hours to shop to whether or not you really need Costco coupons, these hacks will make your shopping experience even better

If you have a Costco membership, then you already know all about the joys of shopping for steals while sampling the goods. What you might not be aware of, however, are the secret tips to navigating your favorite shopping destination, and the extra “hidden” ways you can use that membership to earn even more. Here are some of the best Costco hacks and tips to save you money.

You Can Get Curbside Pick Up

Artistic Operations via Pixabay

Due to COVID, Costco is now offering curbside pickup on selected items for members. Most of it is electronics and jewelry, but it's still a nice perk.

Get Immunizations

CDC via Unsplash

Cross two errands off your list when you make an appointment at the Costco pharmacy for annual immunizations. You can get a flu vaccine for the whole family and other important milestone immunizations. The pharmacy accepts all major insurances.

Know Your Price Codes

iStock

Did you know there are all sorts of little tips and tricks when it comes to figuring out those price codes? Yup, there's a system. Think asterisk = seasonal and 97 cents means a markdown, etc. There are more, according to Wallet Hacks

Shop without a Membership

a Cool costco hack is that Instacart delivers
Instacart

Want the perks of shopping at Costco without the cost of a membership? There's an easy way to make it happen. If you don't mind using Instacart, simply fire up the app and place your Costco order, no membership is needed. Of course, with a $5.99 delivery fee, it still isn't completely free, but you're also gaining the convenience of shopping from home—although you won't get to nibble on all those samples.

Save on Gift Cards

iStock

It’s nearly impossible to get gift cards on sale since you are essentially just trading in cash for a card of the same value. At Costco, however, you can purchase a pack of gift cards to various retailers at a discounted rate.

Ditch the Coupon Book

Forgot your coupon book? No worries. Nowadays, according to Wallet Hacks, there are no barcodes and the savings are automatically applied to your bill. The book is just your monthly list of deals and savings.

Skip the Food Court Line

skipping the food court line is a great costco hack

After navigating your way through Costco and the enormous checkout line with kids in tow, the last thing you want to do is wait in another line to grab lunch, especially if your tots are hangry. Luckily there's a ridiculously simple way to skip the food court line. While you're checking out, place your order and pay, then all you have to do is show your receipt and grab your food at the pick-up area.

Spend Less on Prescriptions

See a Double Feature

A trip to the movies for a family can get pretty pricey, but at Costco, you can purchase a 10-pack of movie tickets for a discounted price and they never expire. With the money you’ll save, that overpriced popcorn and drinks won’t be quite so bad.

The Best Time to Shop

The Krazy Coupon Lady via YouTube

Love Costco's prices, but not the crowds? Beat the lines and packed aisles by shopping on the best day and time. According to Business Insider, try to bypass the weekends and shop on weekdays if possible. It's also best to avoid evenings, so load up your tots and hit Costco early or mid-morning.

You'll Never Overspend

costco hacks save you money

While we can't guarantee you won't buy one too many bottles of Kirkland wine, you definitely won't get charged for more than what you take home thanks to the one thing Costco employees always do before you leave the store. As it turns out checking that receipt and drawing that smiley face has nothing to do with making sure you're not stealing. Instead, Costco does this to ensure that you haven't been double charged for any items.

Another way Costco makes sure you won't overspend is with its 30-day price adjustment policy. According to Eat This, Not That!, if an item goes on sale within 30 days of when you purchased it, Costco will pay you the difference, no receipt needed.

Save Money on Your Next Car

No one likes car shopping, but when you use your Costco membership, you might actually have some fun. The Costco Auto Program works with thousands of pre-owned car dealerships to negotiate low prices for you, so you don’t have to sweat the haggling.

Make Sure You're Scoring a Deal

Want to make sure you're getting the best deal possible? According to Eat This, Not That! you'll know a Costco item has been discounted if the price ends in $0.97. If the price tag also has an asterisk, then it won't be restocked.

Family Vacation on a Budget

Want to see the world? This Costco hack can help you do it for less. With Costco Travel your membership can get you deals on theme park tickets, airplane tickets, car rentals, hotels, and cruises. We're talking up to 30% off hotels both in the U.S. and abroad as well as package deals on family-friendly vacations like Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace Package with Walt Disney World tickets.

Get Checks for Less

Even in the age of digital payments, there are still those few moments when a check is required, and Costco will print you a pack of checks for less than your bank charges.

There’s no reason you can’t be the mastermind behind your own baby photoshoots

You’ve probably been taking impromptu pics of your baby since day one—an unexpectedly adorable expression here, a snuggly selfie there. But wouldn’t it be nice to have a few really good shots of your growing family? Yes, you could hire a professional photographer to create the perfect experience, or you could get creative and do it yourself (which can be a lot more fun!). With the holiday season on the horizon, you have a great excuse to get everyone together for some quality, photo-worthy time, and then share the amazing snaps from your baby photoshoot with friends and family on Tinybeans (check out our app here!).

Here’s how to plan and execute your DIY photo shoot.

1. Enlist a friend or family member

Do you have a teenage niece or nephew who’s passionate about photography? What about a neighbor with a really great DSLR camera? Call in a favor and ask if that artsy pal of yours would be interested in setting aside an hour or two to capture your family for a moment in time. Offer to return the favor in some way (especially if he or she has a family to be photographed!), and say “thanks” with a gift card to a nice restaurant or a bottle of wine and some gourmet chocolate.

2. Nail the timing

Think about your baby’s fluctuating energy and moods throughout the day, and pick a time when you know your little one will be the most calm and content. For some, this is first-thing in the morning. For many, this is right after a nap or feeding. Be flexible with your baby photoshoot and work around the youngest one’s temperament. Also, if you’ll be shooting outside, try to maximize the natural light by taking advantage of early morning or late afternoon rays, but avoid the harsh overhead sun at midday.

3. Coordinate outfits—without being matchy-matchy

We’re all familiar with the matching khaki pants and crisp white shirt look found in countless family photos. While you want to look cohesive, don’t feel obligated to match outfits, which can look canned and inauthentic. Instead, decide on two or three colors (at least one being a neutral) that you will use as your inspiration and find outfits that fit the bill. Simple, solid (non-patterned) clothing is always a safe bet.

4. Carefully consider props

Think about what toys and objects mean something to you and your little ones. If your child has a favorite, love-worn stuffed animal, why not include it in the shot? Be selective, but try a few different props that are unique to your family. And be sure to bring plenty of soft blankets to lay on the grass, curl up in, and play peek-a-boo with.

5. Get low and close

If you’re all sitting on a blanket or casually lying down on the grass, ask your photographer to get as low to the ground as possible so you’re all at the same eye level. And see if he or she is willing to do some close-up shots in addition to wider angles. The variety will make for a really nice collection of photos.

6. Be goofy

Encourage everyone to be silly in an effort to get the baby to laugh and smile. Too often, parents are focused on “looking” polished and perfectly happy in their first baby photoshoot. But feeling carefree in the moment and trying to have fun will result in nicer, more natural images.

7. Forget the camera

Some forward-facing shots are a good idea, but try not to focus on where the camera is at all times. Ask the photographer to move around and achieve different angles that way, rather than trying to coax your baby to turn in a specific direction. Candid shots can be unique and just as gorgeous as posed photos.

8. Don’t stop shooting

If your pal hasn’t photographed babies or tots before, kindly explain that fast-moving little ones make for difficult models so he should use continuous shooting mode and keep snapping. Chances are, one or two of the series will be the perfect pic.

9. Take turns

A big, happy family photo is a great idea, but don’t hesitate to take turns experimenting with who’s in the photo. Take some with just kids, just Dad and baby, just Mom and baby, and all potential iterations. Don’t get too preoccupied on everyone being in same photo.

10. Just go with the crazy

If you have an older toddler running around in circles or your newly crawling baby wants to be on the move, grab a kid, have your partner do the same, and flip them upside down for a playful shot. If tears or tantrums are part of the mix, don’t stress. They can actually make for great, memorable photos.

For parents who want to share special moments with friends and family without making it a public display, there’s the Tinybeans app (you can learn more and download here!). The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

The zippered mini bag has its own reusable bag inside

When it comes to Trader Joe’s, the grocer can pretty much do no wrong. Whether it’s a spooky cookie house for Halloween or the best frozen food around, there’s always a new product to be found at the grocery.

Last year’s viral favorite, the Micro Tote, is back and you’re going to want to run to snag a few before they sell out (because we know they will). The tiny bag looks just like a full-sized version but fits in the palm of your hand. As if the miniature tote wasn’t cute enough, it actually comes with a reusable shopping bag inside so you never walk into the store again without one.

If you’d rather not store the bag inside, there are plenty of other ways to put the tote to good use. You could store loose change, chapstick, or a mask, or use it as a gift card holder for teachers this holiday! And—we think your Barbie would look oh-so-cute carrying this around town.

But perhaps one of the best ways to make this bag work for you is during the holidays because it makes the perfect Elf on the Shelf accessory! Fill it with tiny treats or come up with another creative way your Elf can get into mischief. The bags are just $2.99 each and are found near the greeting cards and registers.

While you’re doing your Trader Joe’s run, don’t forget to check out the rest of the fall goodies, like the Dia de los Muertos ceramic planter with blooms. They join the array of other fun foliage for this fall, including air plant ghouls, sugar skull succulents. We’re hopeful that the yoga skeleton air plants will be out in the next few weeks.

There’s also no shortage of other seasonal finds that include caramel apple dipping kits, pumpkin spice samosas, and even pumpkin dog treats. It’s probably time for a Trader Joe’s run—just don’t forget to pick up a handful of those adorable micro totes while you’re there!

Risk-free rental car bookings and free Costco gift cards? Sign us up!

We love Costco for its massive wedges of cheese, Kirkland wine, bulk toilet paper, and cheap gas, but did you know your Costco membership can also get you some sweet deals on travel? Rental cars, vacation packages (with freebies!), and cruises can all be booked via the Costco Travel website. The deals are the same no matter which Costco membership level you have, but Executive members will get 2% back on travel deals they pay for with their Executive card. Here are some of our favorite ways to use a Costco membership to save on travel.

costcotravel.com

How can you use your Costco membership to book trips?

Head over to costcotravel.com and check out what deals they have available. They have vacation packages, hotels, rental cars, and cruises. You can also book flights when bundled with hotel stays (no standalone flight booking is available). You can think of the Costco travel website as your personal travel agent because they use the power of numbers (their over 120 million members) to negotiate discounts.

The person booking the travel has to have a Costco membership, but the rest of the travelers do not. Also, if you are an Executive Costco member, you don’t have to use your Costco credit card to pay for travel purchases.

iStock

How do you book a rental car through Costco?

One of the best ways to save some money and comparison-shop at the same time is to book your rental car through Costco. You enter your travel dates and where you will be picking up/dropping off the car, and Costco will show you what is available from Alamo, Avis, Budget, and Enterprise. The system will note helpful details, like if the rental car pickup is in the airport terminal or if a shuttle is required (very important when traveling with kids).

Select the size of vehicle you want and fill in the driver details. Costco reserves your rental car without any charge. You can cancel at any time, and no payment is needed until you pick up your vehicle.

The best thing about this system is that you can make a reservation and then continue to check back as your trip approaches to see if the prices have dropped. If that happens, you simply cancel your first reservation and book at the new, lower price.

A family starts a new tradition of watching the sunset together at the beach

What deals does Costco offer for vacation packages?

One of the best ways to save on travel at Costco is through the vacation packages, where you bundle airfare, hotel, and rental (or some combination of the three). Input your travel dates, where you want to go, who is going, and if you need flights as well. Costco will show you what’s available, and many of the packages include things like free breakfast, a Costco shop card (gift card), a spa credit, or a food + beverage credit. The thing that we love about this is that you aren’t managing multiple reservations.

All Costco travel deals must be booked online. Watch out for cancelation periods, as vacation packages must be canceled at least 48 hours prior to scheduled departure and hotels must be canceled at least 24 hours in advance. Travel insurance is not included and must be booked elsewhere.

We have a few thoughts on push presents.

If you haven’t heard of the idea of a “push present”, get this: the concept might actually be centuries old. The Indian ritual of godh bharai is similar to a baby shower, although in this case, instead of the typical bottles and baby swing, the expecting mom is lavished with gifts and cash (um, yes please). To absolutely no one’s surprise, celebrity culture has increased the push present’s popularity. Kristin Cavallari was treated to a Birkin Bag in 2012, courtesy of now-hubby Jay Cutler. Jay-Z gifted Beyoncé a blue diamond worth $35K (apparently, Jays give solid presents).

On the flip side, some people aren’t big fans of the concept. We’ve heard that the baby is (obviously) the best gift already, so if you’re in the “nope” camp, we get it. That said, many believe that new moms should have whatever they want. We can’t really argue that, either.

Our take? If you or your partner is Team Push Present, we have some excellent ideas (though we skipped the Birkin Bag thing because…wow). Not into the idea? Consider just making sure your favorite new mom is as supported as possible—cooking, cleaning, watching the little one while she gets a much-needed shower. Actually, we have a little experience in  New Mom Territory and would highly suggest doing that, regardless of gift-giving. New mom yourself? You have all the permission in the world to pick yourself up something from our (awesome) list below. Or link your partner for a little hint-dropping.

Dad isn’t expecting these…

Why is it that dads always seem to have everything they could ever want? Maybe they genuinely don’t want anything that they don’t already own. Or it could be just that he never really mentions wanting something specific. We think there’s a good chance he’s dropped a hint or two, but we’re pretty sure those hints are along the lines of something practical. And listen, we love our dads and our partners, but we just don’t think socks or a cordless drill backup battery really show what they mean to us. We also don’t want to know that much about drill backup batteries. That means every year, Father’s Day gift shopping can be a serious guessing game.

You’ve probably already done the tie thing. The tools thing. The iTunes gift card thing. Those are all fine, but we think we’ve come up with a few ideas you might not have thought of yet and that dad isn’t expecting. Whether he’s a sports guy, a foodie, or a fashion-forward father, we’ve done our research (just like dad taught us). There are some really cool gifts out there—or rather, right here—that are sure to excite him. So start visualizing your dad, stepdad, husband, partner, and any other dad on your list and check out these Father’s Day gifts.
