Turn that cardboard box into a craft. Acardboard box has endless play possibilities. Turn it into a car, a playhouse—even a game. And it’s easier than you think to make that box the hot new plaything in your home.
Pack school lunches using reusable containers.Ever make a sandwich for your kid’s lunch only to realize you’ve run out of bags to put it in? Never run out again, by going reusable for lunch!
Reuse containers for new uses. Wait! Don’t throw away that yogurt tub—give it a new life by using it to store some of your kiddo’s art supplies.

Instead of tossing old clothes, donate.So you swapped but still left with some of your primo items? Donate them to your local family shelter, overseas for those in need or to your local do-good repurposing shop.
Do a neighborhood toy swap. Toys: In one day and out the next, but now what do you do with them? Set up a neighborhood toy swap, of course! Get that shopping adrenaline rush without opening your wallet AND declutter your space all in one fell swap.
Open windows and turn off heat/AC on nicer days.Okay, maybe this seems like a no-brainer, but it’s easy to forget. So turn off that A/C and let the sunshine in!
Reuse toilet paper rolls for crafts.Toilet paper is always on a roll in our home… but what to do with the actual roll? So. Many. Things! Is it a telescope? A Megaphone? A new nose for Tickles the Bear? The sky’s the limit for kids’ creativity here. (Just don’t forget that you’re out of toilet paper.)
Cut down on craft supplies with a dry erase board/reusable tablet. Tired of watching reams of paper disappear? Get your little Picasso an erasable drawing tablet so they can create a masterpiece without creating waste—now go hug a tree and they just may hug you back for this save!
Melt down broken crayons into new, toddler-friendly ones. That’s it. That’s the whole thing. Broken crayons be darned. Gather up like colors, melt down on the stove, and pour into an ice cube tray, maybe even a fun shaped tray like stars or hearts—now you have the perfect size for those cute little chubby toddler hands.
Make DIY cleaning solutions.Not only is this cost-effective and planet-friendly, but it’s also a great way to make sure whatever you’re spiffing your home up with is non-toxic. Here are some of our favorites.
Keep produce fresher longer by freezing it.At the grocery store, sometimes our eyes are bigger than our stomachs. If you have a bunch of greens, herbs or berries that you just know you won’t get to, freeze them! Lock in all that freshness and lockout rot (and regret.) Now you can use em’ when you want em’.
Get books from the library.We bet your local library is a magical place, and there is nothing like that book smell—ahh! So go check it out, literally, and get your next read at your personal house of all things books, for all interests and all ages—the library!
Recycle your old electronics.Check with your town’s garbage pick-up provider to see if they have days or drop-off sites. Most Goodwill stores accept these items for recycling.
Meatless Mondays! Switch up your burgers to veggie for a delicious eco-friendly swap of your family’s favorite comfort food. Heck, go crazy, maybe even swap your regular fries for sweet potato! Need some yummy recipes? Here you go!
Throw a neighborhood plant party. Ain’t no party like a plant party! Why? Not only are you beautifying your neck of the woods, but you’re bonding with your neighbors. Just ask everyone to bring any extra seeds or plant starts to share!
Do a neighborhood trash pick-up. Here’s a family activity that costs zero dollars, will beautify your hometown and will give you that warm fuzzy do-good feeling: Taking part in a local trash pick up! April is Earth Month, so it’s the perfect time to team up and clean up.
Repurpose old shirts for cleaning rags.Have t-shirts that have seen better days? Give them a new life, as your new best cleaning buddy. No need for more paper products, use these well-loved rags to clean your windows, shine up your bike, countertops and more.
Reuse your plastic bags as trash can liners. Plastic grocery bags make the perfect small-sized trash can liners (we’re looking at you, bathroom wastebasket). So put em’ in the can!
Visit your local farmer’s market. Show local farmers and vendors some love! Spending your hard-earned dollars in your community means it stays in your community. Not only that, you’ll have access to the freshest products money can buy and maybe even get to chat with the person that grew those ingredients you’ll be eating for lunch—that’s pretty cool!
Turn off the faucet when kids brush their teeth. Teaching kids to conserve water is so important, not just for the environment, but for your water bill. Post a note in the bathroom as a reminder and reward kids with an ocean-themed sticker when they help save water for our aquatic friends.
Swap lightbulbs for LED. Not sure what kind of lightbulbs you have? Then it’s the perfect time to swap them for energy-conserving LED bulbs which are widely available—grab some at your local hardware store today!
Join a local beach clean-up. If you are lucky enough to live by a body of water, why not return the favor with a little tidying? Post in a local community group to round up some folks who also want to keep their beach clean so all can enjoy it—including the magnificent creatures it holds.
Bring a reusable water bottle. Going somewhere? Don’t forget your water bottle! Do a little research and get one you love that suits your hydration needs (metal, plastic or glass, for instance). By choosing the water vessel of your dreams, you are sure to reach for it each and every day.
Pack your own utensils. Families are always on the go—and eating on the go! Keep some utensils and reusable straws in your bag for quick meals without the extra waste. Throw a reusable, lightweight bamboo utensil set in your kids’ backpacks, too!
Donate old blankets and towels to an animal shelter. Don’t know what to do with those old blankets and towels that are not quite gently used enough for traditional donation? Bring those much-needed comfort items to your local animal shelter! Our furry friends will thank you.

Atlanta St. Patrick's Parade: Saturday, March 12

The Atlanta St. Patrick’s Parade, which dates back to 1848, is one of the oldest parades of its kind in the U.S. and longest running event in Atlanta’s history. It returns to the streets of Midtown. The family-friendly event will feature highlights such as the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales and the world’s largest walking flag, which is carried by dozens of marchers. Previous year’s parades were attended by more than 80,000 spectators, so plan to get there early via MARTA.

Paddy like no one's watching at the 18th Annual St. Paddy's Day Festival at the Smyrna Market Village, and little clovers are welcome to join Thursday afternoon and all day Saturday. 13 years and younger get in free. The weekend will have brew-tiful weather accompanied by live music, the dyeing of the fountain green by Smyrna's mayor (Thursday 6 p.m.), Cornhole ATL, drink specials, and games for the little clovers all day long!

Chief O’Neill’s Pub & Restaurant. Chief O’Neill’s could not feel more authentic if it were in the heart of county Cork itself. Home to the Irish Music School of Chicago, Chief O’Neill’s serves up traditional dishes such as lamb stew, shepherd’s pie, and Guinness-infused meatloaf. With live traditional Irish music and a “little leprechauns” menu featuring more American than Irish fare, you can’t go wrong!
Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro. The Chicago Tribune called Mrs. Murphy’s “one of Chicago’s most authentic Irish restaurants," and for good reason. Quigley’s Irish Pub. Talk about authentic… Quigley’s was designed and built in Ireland and then shipped to its current location in downtown Naperville. The interior includes an authentic antique fireplace and bookcases from Dublin and custom glass and Irish prints fill the walls. Of course, the menu is filled with traditional Irish favorites, such as corned beef, lamb stew and beef braised with Guinness.
Irish Times Pub. The Irish Times is a unique combination of old-school tradition and new-school thinking. Inside this “cozy cottage” you’ll find genuine Irish whiskeys, ales and beers (and faces) behind the bar. If you could see the back office, you’d find a progressive recycling program, a commitment to efficient gas and electric usage and a dedication to sourcing as much local produce as possible, including beers from local craft breweries. These ingredients are used in classic, homemade favorites such as corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie and fish & chips, all from family recipes.
Ballydoyle Pub. Enjoy a special St. Pat’s Family Day at Ballydoyle! Teaching your kids about conservation and the environment is a lot more than just recycling, but it doesn’t have to drastically alter your lifestyle either. There are dozens of small things that families can do to go green, and many of them have the added bonus of saving you money! Read on for simple ways to help your crew help the planet.

1. Pick up trash. Bring along a spare plastic bag or two to pick up wayside recycling or garbage on walks around the neighborhood.
2. Carry reusable totes. Cut back on landfill-clogging plastic (and to save money if your city charges for bags!). Stash a few in your car and a folding one in your purse.
4. Buy secondhand. You can find kids' clothing, furniture, home accessories and art from the antique market, from a Facebook marketplace, garage sales or Craigslist. Not only will you be consuming fewer new products, but your stuff will have a story.
9. Use smart bulbs. If your kid needs a night light, make sure to use an LED light. It can be on all night without taking nearly as much energy as a conventional light.
10. Dispose of old paint and electronics the responsible way. Check with your city's garbage pick-up provider to see if they have days or drop-off sites. Most Goodwill stores accept these items for recycling.

11. Use reusable/refillable water bottles all day, every day! You'll help decrease the amount of plastic clogging our oceans and landfills.
12. Buy rechargeable batteries. If you decide to go with regular batteries, make sure to recycle them properly.
13. Quit using paper towels to clean. Cut up old bath towels and tee shirts for cleaning instead.
14. Turn off the water when brushing your teeth.
15. Leave the car at home. Chose one trip a day to bike or use public transportation.
17. Buy in bulk. Buy from the market's bulk section to avoid unnecessary packaging. Do you really need individual containers of olives or cheese sticks when you can buy in bulk and pack it yourself?
18. Take an hour or less and switch all your bills to paperless.
19. Save plastic to-go containers and make mini-greenhouses for starting seeds.
20. Check the family car's tire pressure once a month. Having the right amount will increase gas mileage by three percent (woot!).
21. Put your computer to bed. Plan on stepping away from the keypad? Switch your computer to “sleep” mode to save energy.
22. Tote your own refillable coffee mug. Many coffee shops even charge less for patrons who bring their own mug.
23. Load up the dishwasher. Also, don’t worry about pre-rinsing. (Note: this doesn't work as well with old appliances!).
24. Avoid products with palm oil. Rainforests are still being destroyed in order to produce palm oil. It's found in everything from chocolate to shampoo. Read more here.
25. Use coffee grounds in a compost pile or under acidity-loving plants like azaleas.
26. Designate one glass per day. Instead of grabbing a new cup each time a kid needs a drink, assign everyone a cup each day.
27. And speaking of compost ... If you don't have space or yard to start your own, see if your city offers a composting program or try and start one at your kid's school.
28. Share your old magazines with friends or doctor’s offices. It's always a good idea to black out your address first. And if no one wants them, recycle them!
29. Use cloth napkins instead of paper. Not only will you save trees but you'll look extra fancy.
30. Buy reusable snack bags. You won't have to buy plastic bags for months, if not years.

31. Sell old cellphones. All they're doing is taking up space in your desk drawers. You can send them to usell.com for cash.
32. Add some green. Houseplants are natural air filters, so grow one in your kiddo's room!
33. Dry your clothes in the sunlight or air. Even if they still need to "finish" in the dryer, you'll save electricity and gas by letting natural elements do half the job.
34. Cut up plastic six-pack rings! You probably heard about this when you were a kid but it's still a problem and it's an easy thing to do.
35. Talk to your kids about why going green is so important. You'll be creating future conservationists!
39. Consider the rain garden: a garden designed to help filter run-off from parking lots. Many schools are creating these in medians and edges of parking lots.
40. Use calendars and greeting cards to make cool art.
43. Stop using bath and body products with synthetic microbead exfoliants and opt for either natural exfoliating ingredients like scrubs with nut/seed exfoliants like St. Ive’s, or sugar scrubs.

Our collective calendar looks a bit different nowadays. The daily to weekly monotony began to sink in for us, so I decided to spice up the schedule. Homeschool still applies somewhere in the morning, but as that dwindles away into summer, this may help with the unusual transition this year.
Here’s what I came up with, and it’s been a welcomed adjustment for all in the family!
MINDFUL MONDAY: Start the week with an open mind.
1. Ask questions over breakfast. Ask anything and everyone gets a turn. You never know what your child might ask. One day, our little one asked, “When all the humans are gone, will the dinosaurs come back?” This led to lots of dinosaur extinction discussions and worthwhile videos. His mind was working as opposed to the usual waffle chit-chat.
2. When on a walk in the neighborhood, name everything that the sun is touching. Find the letter “A” on license plates and street signs. Seek out the most interesting mailboxes (my personal favorite, like the neighbor who transformed their mailbox into a “free library” as well.)
TUNES on TUESDAY: Singing a different tune now, kids.
3. Play some music in the background (parent’s choice) all day long: Think Otis for breakfast, Patsy for lunch, and Mozart for dinner.
4. Listen to the sounds outside, in the backyard or on walks. On a breezy Tuesday, try laying under the trees and listen to the leaves rustle with your little. “Watch them dance” as my son surprised me by saying.
5. Order a windchime (or make if you’re craftier than me) for any outdoor nook (respecting neighbors of course). Our new addition was a ten buck wooden find and it’s lovely!
WACKY WEDNESDAY: It’s a wacky world, so go with it.
6. Want to wear a costume all day, go ahead! Or want breakfast for dinner, no problem!
7. Want to take a shower instead of bath? Sure! Works for me!
8. Want to listen to a kid’s story via a podcast during snack? Sure!
9. Want to write “mom” on my forehead, depends on my mood…
THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY: Feels good to think and do for others, more than ever.
10. Mail some artwork with a note to grandma, a school friend, or a stranger (like a nearby nursing home that could use some cheer).
11. Write in chalk on the sidewalk to spread a positive phrase for the neighbors.
12. Help with meal prep, do an extra chore, and tidy the toys.
FAVORITE FRIDAY: Play favorites, the right way.
13. Eat a favorite cereal, sandwich and/or pasta.
14. Wear your favorite t-shirt or hat.
15. Read your favorite book or story.
SUSTAINABLE SATURDAY: Children are our future.
16. Water plants or veggies and/or plant something new.
17. Take all recyclables to the recycling bin.
18. Support a local farmers market.
19. Do a nature activity like rock art or an outdoor scavenger hunt.
20. Look through stuff and find the shoes that are getting tight, shirt too snug, or a toy past its prime, and give three things away (parents too).
21. Feeling lazy? Watch a video or show about the planet and going green! “Here We Are” on Apple+ was a huge hit in our house on Earth day and every Saturday since!
SIMPLE SUNDAY: Let it go (your schedule, not a movie reference)
22. Self-play and rest as needed.
23. A night off from cooking can benefit all around. If you’re able, order from a local restaurant to show support during this time. They probably could use it.
Any variation of the above can work for your family. We need tricks up our sleeves for month three and find some joy in everyday.

Marriott International has just announced that it plans to eliminate all single-use shower toiletries from its properties worldwide. This is an expansion on a company initiative that was first launched in 2018. Marriott hopes to prevent about 500 million tiny bottles from ending up in landfills each year. The properties will instead feature larger, pump-topped bottles in guest room showers. As Marriott explained in a press release, a larger bottle contains the same amount of product as 10 to 12 mini bottles, which are typically not recycled and end up in the trash.

Toy maker Hasbro has just announced that it plans to eliminate all plastic in its packaging by the end of 2022. Starting in 2020 the company will be phasing out plastic from new product packaging, including plastic elements like polybags, elastic bands, shrink wrap, window sheets and blister packs. Hasbro already committed to eliminating wire ties in 2010 and adding How2Recycle labeling in 2016. Recently Hasbro also established a toy recycling program with TerraCycle, which accepts "well-loved Hasbro toys and games" to be recycled into materials to be used in the construction of play spaces, flowerpots, park benches and other uses.
How often do the remaining pieces of the travel-sized bar of soap in your hotel bathroom end up in the trash? Instead of tossing the bars, Hilton Hotels is reusing them—but not in a leave-used-bars-for-the-next-guest, unsanitary type of way. Instead, the hotel chain is collaborating with Clean the World to melt down old bars and create new, recycled ones. The recycled soap won't stay in the hotels, but instead will go to people in need.
According to recent reports, Coca-Cola aims to make all packaging fully recyclable by 2025. The company also wants to make sure everyone can recycle every Coke product—setting a lofty goal to collect and recycle every bottle (or the equivalent of every bottle) sold by 2030. As it works on its eco-goals, the Coca Cola Foundation is greening the planet by funding several environmental organizations with grants totaling $5.4 million.
What do these two retailers have in common? They're now using the eco-friendly delivery service Loop. Even though it's still in the pilot phase (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, D.C. are the first states to have access), Loop is an in-demand circular shopping experience. After signing up for the program all you need to do is order participating products from Walgreens or Kroger. Loop sends you the items in a reusable tote, you use your purchases and then you return the packaging to Loop. The company reuses the leftover packaging, refilling it for future use.

With IKEA’s People and Planet Positive sustainability strategy, 60 percent of all raw materials sourced by the home furnishings giant to produce its products during 2018 were from renewable sources, like cotton and bamboo. IKEA plans for that figure to hit 100 percent by 2030. The company has also launched dozens of products designed to help consumers live greener, from meatless meatballs to energy-efficient lighting.
What's Target's biggest eco-target? Eradicating its carbon footprint. Target's three step strategy includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its facilities, reducing emissions from energy the company purchases to power its facilities and decreasing emissions generated from the company’s entire supply chain. Some of the steps Target plans to take include using LED lights in company buildings and installing solar rooftop panels in 500 locations by the year 2020.
In early 2019, Trader Joe’s adopted a new initiative to reduce packaging waste in all of its stores. Its new strategy includes removing unnecessary packaging, sourcing renewable and recycled packaging materials, choosing recyclable packaging, avoiding packaging made with harmful substances and educating consumers on best recycling and disposal practices.
This big box retailer committed to everyday low prices has also committed to sustainable practices across the board. Walmart has converted 28 percent of of the energy sources powering its stores and operations globally to renewables and diverted 78 percent of its global waste from landfills by finding ways to recycle, reuse or even sell the garbage. The company’s goal is to get to 50 percent renewables and zero waste in Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and United States by 2025.

Whole Foods has just awarded $1.2 million dollars to schools across the country through its Whole Kids Foundation. The grants are designed to enable schools to build or maintain edible gardens that can teach kids about the importance of nutrition and developing healthy diets. The grocery chain is also going green with a commitment to eliminate plastic straws. The retailer will offer recyclable, compostable paper straws to customers ordering drinks and smoothies in its stores by July 2019.
Costco recently joined the How2Recycle label program. The labeling program establishes a standardized system that identifies each part of the packaging and how to recycle for optimum recovery.
Pretty soon you’ll be sipping those Frapps without a straw. Starbucks has vowed to eliminate all of those famous green plastic straws by 2020. The company will offer straw-free lids on all of its cold beverages at over 28,000 locations across the globe.
Aldi has just committed to making 100 percent of its packaging, including plastic, reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. The company has also committed to reducing all of its product packaging by 15 percent.
While not a brick-and-mortar store like those above, the online source for all things handmade recently announced in February 2019, it became the first global e-commerce company to offset 100 percent of carbon emissions from shipping. To put that in perspective, since the company's announcement, Etsy will have offset approximately 22,500 metric tons of carbon—or the equivalent of not charging nearly 3 billion cell phones!
