Thrifting, bike tours, and museums are on the list
With flight prices to Europe skyrocketing in recent months, our neighbor to the north is becoming a popular destination for family travel. I recently visited Toronto with my teen in tow and found the city to be full of great food, unique museums, street art, and thrift shops. Did you know that Toronto has its own set of islands that you can access via ferry and bike? There’s that and so much more in this easy-to-navigate city—here are my recommendations along with a great hotel that has its own indoor waterslide!
Tour the Toronto Islands via bike.
Just a short ferry ride will take you to the Toronto Islands and our favorite way to explore this area is on a bike. We met up with our group at Toronto Bicycle Tours and headed a few blocks downtown to the ferry terminal where we loaded our bikes on board and set out for a 15-minute ride to the Toronto Islands. After disembarking, we learned a bit of the history of the islands before we set out for our tour. We stopped at points along the way to explore this car-free community. The ride was flat and easy, and they said they could accommodate kids of all ages. It was a trip highlight for both of us!
See a show at Dream at High Park.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream was on stage at Dream at High Park during our visit. After a long day spent walking around the city, we loved chill vibes of this outdoor theatre in a serene park location. Kids sitting next to us ran over to visit the nearby (free!) zoo before the show started and we wished we’d had more time to stop by ourselves. This is the perfect summer activity for families as you can bring in your own dinner or snacks for a picnic during the show. Be sure to get there early as seating is first come-first served.
If you want to grab some delicious eats nearby, we recommend Barque Smokehouse. Smoked meats are the focus with lots of shareable options available. Don’t pass up the sides as the charred broccoli salad and BBQ fries were some of our favorites.
Walk through Kensington Market for some vintage shopping.
Foodies and thrifters will love walking through Kensington Market as there is so much to see. Streets lined with craftspeople drew us in to buy so many pairs of earrings (Can you have too many? We think not.) before we stopped for boba tea and pie (Wanda’s Pie in the Sky is a must.). Our favorite thrift shops were along Kensington Ave. and nearby:

Visit some of Toronto’s amazing museums.
Not many teens will list museum visits at the top of their list of vacation favorites but a shoe museum is another story. We stopped by the Bata Shoe Museum where “In Bloom: Flowers and Footwear” was on exhibit. Picture shoes of all shapes and sizes and time periods decked out in florals. You’ll definitely be inspired to up your footwear game after your visit!
Not sure why miniatures are so universally loved by kids, but all ages will enjoy a visit to Little Canada while in Toronto. Walk through this fun exhibit where you can see loads of Canadian cities and a few others as they appear from above. See if you can find your hotel on the Little Toronto model and watch for Maurice the moose to appear throughout.
Head to Yorkdale Shopping Centre for some upscale shopping.
Chelsea Hotel Toronto
Take a break from sightseeing for an activity that the teens are sure to love. It’s easy to hop aboard the TTC to make your way to Yorkdale Mall from the city center. Cafe Landwer is a great spot to start at as you can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine and a brunch menu that’s to die for. You’ll need the fuel for all the shopping you’re about to do!
You’ll find teen-favorite shops like Aerie, UNIQLO, and Artizia here along with everyone’s favorite store for stationery, home decor, and fine-point pens—MUJI. Department store Holt Refrew offers a great selection of Dr. Martens and other teen-friendly clothing brands. Before you head back into the city, stop by Craig’s Cookies for some sweet treats.
The historic Distillery District is a fun spot to visit for some shopping and dining. Go Tours Canada offers a 30-minute tour via Segway that teens and parents love. You’ll get a rundown of the area’s history with specific attention to the historic Victorian buildings that still stand today. They also offer ghost tours via Segway and walking tours for those who prefer to explore on foot.
While you are there, stop by El Catrin Destileria for modern Mexican cuisine. This spot boasts some stunning decor and a massive tequila menu. Order up the guacamole topped with crickets to start and the churros to end your meal of tacos, quesadillas, or chilaquiles.

Toronto has a top-notch food scene and you’ll definitely want to bring your appetites when you visit. Here are a few of our favorite dining spots from our visit:
Mandy’s—Focusing on salads and smoothies, this too-cute spot was a favorite after a long day of thrifting. The Ossington Ave. location had some excellent shopping right across the street.
Lao Lao Bar—Shareable plates are on order at this spot that features Lao dishes from satay chicken and mango salad to spring rolls and panang curry. There’s an extensive vegetarian offering if that’s your jam.
Piano Piano—Get all dolled up and plan to spend some time enjoying your meal at the festively fancy Piano Piano. The vodka croquettes were the perfect way to start our meal with the egg yolk ravioli taking center stage for the main. Traditional options like chicken piccata and as well as a family-style menu make this a great spot for groups.
Where to stay when visiting Toronto.
Chelsea Hotel Toronto
The Chelsea Hotel is our go-to spot when visiting Toronto with kids. We love its central location that offers easy walkability to lots of the top tourist spots and TTC access to get you where you need to go. Kids will go crazy over the indoor pool with corkscrew waterslide as well as the property’s Kid Centre with its resident bunnies. And be warned, you may not be able to tear the teens away from the arcade.
Families can spread out in the two-bedroom family fun suite that comes with a kitchen to give you an alternative to dining out. Dining on-site is super easy with both buffet and seated a la carte options available without having to leave the hotel grounds. Be sure to try the hotel’s butter chicken as it is quite delicious!

While the teens are enjoying the arcade, parents can visit the adults-only pool and fitness room on the hotel’s top floor. This is also a great spot for viewing the city lights and fireworks if you are lucky!

Most of us remember our favorite stuffed animal from childhood—maybe a teddy bear, a soft bunny, or a plush dog that we snuggled so hard for so many years that it ended up tattered and worn. Parents tend to call these comfort items ‘loveys’—but in addition to being cute, they actually serve an important purpose for little kids. So how and when should your little one meet their new best friend? Here’s everything you need to know about introducing a lovey for baby.
What is a lovey and why do babies, well, love them?
“A lovey is usually a term that refers to an item a baby may hold or want while falling asleep, for comfort or self-soothing behaviors,” says Dr. Sara Siddiqui, a pediatrician at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital in New York. This often includes stuffed animals, soft dolls, baby blankets, and other comfort items. Loveys aren’t just for bedtime, though—tots turn to them whenever they need a little comfort and soothing throughout the day. Think: in the stroller, on car rides, or just hanging out in your living room.
A lovey can help babies calm down during an episode of crying or irritability, Siddiqui says, and may offer comfort when mom and dad aren’t around. “[Loveys] assist in separation anxiety when the parent or loved one needs to leave the room.” After all, you can’t be within arm’s reach of your child all day, every day, so a lovey is a great tool to help them feel safe and secure when you’re out of sight. Research even shows that the act of stroking can signal the release of oxytocin, a hormone that helps calm and soothe the body, which is why you’ll sometimes see a toddler frantically petting their lovey when they’re feeling uneasy.
Because these items offer a sense of security, kids can develop an attachment to them at a young age. While many children bond with a soft toy or stuffed animal, others may form attachments to random household objects—even toothbrushes!—because they’re familiar and offer so much comfort. They may crave these objects when they’re feeling tired or sad, or processing other emotions. The image of a baby snuggled up with a comfort mop or hairbrush is hilarious, don’t get us wrong, but trust us—a stuffed toy is a lot more practical (and convenient) for most families.
When can I give my baby a lovey?
“The ideal age to introduce a comfort item would be around 9 months when the infant starts to experience separation anxiety,” Siddiqui explains. “Developmentally, babies [at that age] are forming object permanence and separation anxiety where they know who they are most comfortable with.”
Pro tip: choose a lovey that’s washable and relatively inexpensive, and grab a spare or two. This will come in handy if you need to wash the original, want to bring a beloved stuffed animal on a trip, or if the original lovey is lost, damaged, or discontinued.
How to introduce a lovey for baby
While introducing a comfort item to your baby may seem as simple as just handing it over, there are tips and tricks to help them form a bond. Some sleep experts recommend cuddling the lovey alongside your baby during storytime or while breastfeeding, while others suggest giving the lovey hugs and kisses in front of your infant before offering it to them. You can also tuck the lovey into your shirt or sleep with it yourself temporarily to help transfer your scent onto the material—a familiar and comforting sensation for your baby.
When can your baby sleep with their lovey?
While you may be tempted to throw your tot’s lovey into the crib at bedtime, sleep experts and medical professionals agree that no blankets, stuffed toys, or other loose objects should be added to an infant’s sleep space until they’re a year old. “Best practice is not to have [a lovey] during sleep as there may be a suffocation risk for infants,” Dr. Siddiqui agrees. “Always speak with your child’s pediatrician to discuss safe sleep practices.”
Once your babe is over a year old, feel free to give them a stuffed animal or favorite comfort object at bedtime. Over time, they may even come to associate the feel of the lovey with sleep and doze off more easily (fingers crossed). Just make sure it’s not a choking risk or a suffocation risk (skip the oversized or weighted stuffed animals, for example). You should also make sure it can’t be used to help them climb out of their crib. A large, firm stuffed animal that functions as a makeshift step stool in bed? No, thank you!
Can babies get too attached?
Generally speaking, this isn’t something parents need to be concerned about. Being emotionally attached to a comfort item (or ‘transitional item’) is a normal part of childhood development, and has known benefits for parents and kids alike. Self-soothing is a learned skill, and comfort is a good thing—people need it at every age and stage of life. So if your child seems obsessed with a certain soft toy or stuffed animal, know that it’s perfectly healthy and this phase will likely pass (or at least, the intensity of the attachment to that item will fade over time). If you have specific concerns, ask your family doctor for advice.

Is there anything like the smell of a freshly cut Christmas tree? We didn’t think so, either. This year, continue (or start) a tradition of picking up your family’s Christmas tree near San Francisco by buying from a local tree farm. From intimate family-owned farms to ones complete with holiday train rides and Santa visits, there’s one close to you no matter where you are in the Bay Area. Good to know: most Christmas tree farms open the day after Thanksgiving with a couple of them opening earlier in case you can’t wait to inhale that fresh fir scent.
Head to this family-owned and operated pop-up Christmas tree lot on the banks of the Arroyo Mocho Creek on Mines Road. You can also purchase poinsettias, pinecones, locally-sourced mistletoe, along with other holiday-themed items. And don't forget your letters to Santa! They have a mailbox where you can drop your letters and are guaranteed to make it to the big guy. Good to Know: There's plenty of parking but no restrooms here so plan accordingly.
Enjoy an outdoor experience in the East Bay hills at the Castro Valley Christmas Tree Farm, where the whole family, including the kids, are invited to help saw down the perfect tree. The farm has been open since 1969 for families looking for a “woodsy” experience in the East Bay.
We love this spot to choose your perfect tree (sizes range from tiny tabletop trees to 11 footers) and then enjoy some hot cocoa, cider and popcorn by the firepit . Be sure to check out their country store for artisan gifts, ornaments and snacks. Wreaths and garlands available for purchase (or made to order) and they deliver trees locally within 10 miles. Santa’s Tree Farm and Village
Since 1972, this tree farm has been quite a festive holiday destination. In addition to offering trees grown without herbicides or pesticides and over 480 acres worth of trees to choose from, you'll also find train rides, life-sized reindeer, and Santa's Village where you'll find carolers, handmade goodies in the Elves' Workshop.
This local, family-owned farm has a great selection of pre-cut Noble Fir and Silver tip Christmas trees, fresh garlands, and wreaths. If you get lucky, you just might run into Sam's Chowdermobile for a savory bowl of chowder to boot!

If you're looking for a fun family experience, head over to Rancho Siempre Verde, this hidden gem just south of Half Moon Bay in Pescadero. For over 55 years, this family-owned farm has been sharing their magnificent U-cut Christmas trees, eclectic collection of swings and xylophones scattered throughout the property (not to mention all-you-can-eat toasted marshmallows) and sweeping Pacific Ocean views with a few lucky, in-the-know visitors. Families love Pochini's farm because it is family-run and they just get how it goes when you are cutting down your tree with your kids.
