Jake’s Ice Cream
Jake’s Ice Cream can be found in many locations around town, but get it at the Irwin Street Market for the traditional ice cream parlor effect. For the wobblers out there, there are also family-style kitchen tables in a lounge adjacent to the ice cream counter. Jake’s impressive list of creative (and offbeat) flavors satisfies every craving in your crowd. They’re also opening a new location in East Point this summer, so keep an eye out.

Trains and treats? Yes, please. This sweet shop is a converted train caboose with a walk-up window serving Greenwood’s ice cream—Atlanta’s answer to Mayfield’s on a smaller scale and with wilder flavors. With a private and plentiful parking lot between the caboose and the actual train track (another plus for your little train aficionados), you can enjoy your ice cream tailgate-style or stroll the streets of downtown Chamblee as you eat.

Morelli’s
This is ice cream the way it’s supposed to be. Morelli’s churns up traditional flavors (salted caramel will make you moan) and more creative combinations (think strawberry balsamic, maple bacon, or coconut jalapeño). But no matter your kids’ tastes, the creamy, smooth, rich quality of Morelli’s will have them begging for more.

Kilwin’s
Okay, Kilwin’s is a chain, but there is only one in Georgia (in Atlantic Station), and you should go. The smell of chocolate greets guests at the door, and kids will marvel at the toys, candy cases, and decorations as they make their way back towards the ice cream. Very few things can distract a child from an ice cream cone, but the candy maker molding bite-sized chocolates at the front of the store might do it.

Ice cream is synonymous with summer, particularly if you have little sugar babes running around. So, we scoured the city (and beyond!) for the most delicious ice cream shops near you. Read on for the scoop on where to go to satisfy your summer craving and indulge in a yummy frozen treat.

Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, a gourmet ice cream company launched in Columbus, Ohio, in 2002, opened its first local scoop shops in Carlsbad and is planning to open its second in North Park later this year.  The midwestern favorite offers out-of-the-box flavors like Everything Bagel and Powdered Jelly Donut as well as classics like Brambleberry Crisp to Gooey Butter Cake. Jeni’s concocts its flavors using direct and fair trade ingredients, without artificial coloring. The James Beard award-winning ice cream maker has written two cookbooks and she was at the forefront of the American, artisanal ice cream movement. Be prepared for a long line, but the frozen treat is worth the wait.

South Swell Hand Dipped Ice Cream

South Swell was voted "Best of San Clemente" three years in a row--and for good reason! Mr. Trustee Walk-Up Ice Cream Shop

Nostalgia reigns supreme at any walk-up ice cream shop and Mr. Trustee creamery is no exception. Looking for a cool spot for family date night? Salt & Straw isn’t your average ice cream shop by any stretch. The family-run business conjures up wildly imaginative San Diego-specific flavors made using ingredients from local businesses. Made locally in small batches, their ice creams combine local, organic and sustainable ingredients into unique flavors you can’t find anywhere else. Their menu has two parts: permanent fixtures (called “classics”) that are so beloved they remain year-round and a selection of limited-time flavors that rotate each month. Classics here include Honey Lavender (a delightfully light purple-hued treat), Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons (featuring hand-burned caramel with a deep, rich flavor you won’t find in your grocery aisle) and Chocolate Gooey Brownie (hot chocolate ice cream with hearty chunks of chewy brownie). Journey off the beaten ice cream path and try a new and delicious frozen treat at SomiSomi. Known as Ah-Boong in Korea, this Taiyaki soft serve is a culinary art form. Former Komi pastry chef Ben Brunner whips up foodie-inspired flavors like strawberry-buttermilk with polenta crumble and oatmeal cookie with chocolate shavings. When career chef Charles Foreman  lost his job during the pandemic, he made the ultimate pandemic pivot and went into business for himself. Today he serves Hershey Creamery ice cream in handmade cones at this Petworth outpost. Niko’s Spiked Gelato
Niko’s is another sweet pandemic pivot story (pun intended). During the early days of COVID, Studio52 nightclub owners found a creative way for locals to bring the party home: spiked ice cream! This Canal Park gelato shop is the brainchild of the Wiseguy Pizza owners  (yes! DC’s best crust pizza is just steps away) and is conveniently located near the Navy Yard metro stop. Altani’s carries some exceptionally unique flavors, like Sweet Potato (which is a kid-enticing color of Barney-purple). This shop also offers dairy free options.

Restaurants with patios aren’t the only way to enjoy outdoor dining. We’ve rounded up the best places to grab a basket, throw out a blanket and enjoy all the family fun. It’s time to pack up your picnic basket loaded with tasty treats and libations, we found some of the most picturesque places to nosh around the city. From a park where you can practically touch the planes overhead to an outdoor venue that boasts frequent performances, here are the best places to spread out and dine alfresco (plus near-by DC restaurants offering picnics and meals to-go).

The REACH

Victura Park

You don't need a ticket to take in the sights and sounds of The REACH on the North Plaza. Have you ever picnicked on a roof before? This outdoor space is the largest green roof in the city, measuring over 69,000 square feet. It often plays host to a number of outdoor performances and movies, but once the crowds disperse it's the ideal gathering place for an informal meal with family and friends. After lunch, let the littles chase the birds near the two reflecting ponds.

Pack a picnic: Grab something to nosh on Thurs.-Sun. at Victura Park, a small cafe housed inside the River Pavilion. For more kid-friendly options, you can also grab food at the KC Cafe 7 days a week.

National Mall

There is shortage of Instagrammable picnic spots on the National Mall and practically every spot has easy-to-grab food options thanks to the food trucks and museum restaurants that line the green open spaces. Some of our favorite places to enjoy a spread include the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the Tidal Basin and the Hirschhorn Museum Garden. If you need to fill up your water bottle or you just want to run off your meal with an epic game of hide and seek, check out the Summerhouse on the US Capitol Grounds. 

Pack a picnic: If you don't want to duck into a museum, head to the Pavilion Cafe which offers salads and sandwiches and worth-the-calorie pastries.

Pint-size aviation buffs will love hanging out at Gravelly Point Park, which is conveniently situated just off of the George Washington Parkway. It's there where they're able to watch planes take off (right above their heads!) from Reagan National Airport. Pack a picnic or bring popcorn to make plane watching a serious spectator sport.

Pack a picnic: If you have adventurous eaters, head over to Pentagon Row to grab some modernized Taiwanese "gua bao" at Bun'd Up. Kid-favorites include chicken wings and fried ice cream sandwiches.

Theodore Roosevelt Island

We all need a day to cool our heels and absorb some of the plentiful presidential histories that surround the District. Roosevelt Island has over 90 acres bursting with short hikes that even the tiniest tyke can tackle. There is wildlife aplenty and a guest-starring statue of Roosevelt himself for the kiddos to take in. At the end let the fountain tickle their toes before heading home.

Pack your picnic: Order online from Miami’s smash-hit Southern eatery that just opened in DC this spring—perfect for a fried chicken craving. Yardbird dishes up large family-style boxes for takeout or even delivery to your favorite park. Who is ready for some summertime water views? We've got the perfect family-friendly spot for your whole crew to enjoy. Lay out your blanket along the Georgetown Waterfront Park overlooking the Potomac River or sit on the steps. More than just a beautiful green space, the park has a labyrinth, fountain and rain gardens (collects and holds rainwater and stormwater runoff). If people and boat watching are your things, then this is the place. You can scope ducks, cyclists, joggers, kids playing in the fountain, kayakers, rowing regattas, and larger boats too.

Pack your picnic: Order food to-go from Farmers Fishers Bakers. You'll find snacks like pretzels and dip or pop kettle corn and easy-to-carry lunch options like hand-tossed pizzas, sushi and mussel pots.

Burke Lake Park

It’s OK to dine and dash here. You need all the time you’ve got to take in the 218 acres. As part of the 888 acres Fairfax County Park, this lake offers fishing, boating, rowboats, a miniature train, a carousel, three playgrounds, a mini-golf course, a Frisbee golf course and an ice cream parlor in case you forget to bring dessert. Make it a big family and friends day and reserve the picnic spots with grills, which is between the lake and play areas.

Pack your picnic: Grab some unique picnic food on your way to the park at Senberry. This local spot specializes in superfoods, specifically some amazing Acai Bowls. You won't be disappointed!

Hains Point

Peaceful and picturesque, this southern part of the East Potomac Park offers views of the Potomac River, Washington Channel and the Anacostia. Picnic tables are aplenty as well as public bathrooms, which is perfect for the newly potty-trained set. Spend the day on the playground, watching planes fly by and close out the day with a round of mini-golf.

Pack your picnic: Stop by Grazie Grazie on your way to the park. Just under a half-mile away, you can choose the perfect picnic fare from the Build Your Own sandwich menu. Don't forget to add their famous cannoli to the order.

Rock Creek Park

The National Zoo may be this park’s biggest draw, but you can munch among wildlife minus the cages too. Scan the foliage from your blanket for the three kinds of owls that live here and keep watch for the newest mammal to take up residence: coyotes. NPS rangers also take kids on free nature tours. There’s also a nature center, planetarium and the Horse Center, which offers pony rides. Park admission is free, but some activities require reservations. Eight picnic spots must be reserved for a fee, but you can also find free ones along the waterway and many have grills or fireplaces. Bonus: When nature calls, many picnic groves are near flushable toilets.

Pack your picnic: Bread Furst, just over a mile from the park, offers a delicious baked goods to go. Make sure you try the cinnamon chocolate monkey bread.

Meridian Hill Park

Grab a seat and open your picnic basket on one of many cozy benches. Munch by the largest cascading fountain in North America and take in the views. As part of the National Park Service, this 12-acre site also has a memorial to President James Buchanan and a weekly drum circle for dance enthusiasts. Children can bring their own handmade or commercial instruments to play along with the beats.

Pack a picnic: Dinner and a show are ready and waiting if you grab a picnic kit from Officina. Each basket includes a selection of our favorite salami, preserves, and snacks. Feeling extra? You can upgrade to the Dom Perignon picnic box.

The Yards

Yards Park

A favorite go-to for families of all sizes since its creation, located along the Anacostia River waterfront, Yards Park provides lots of activity. The great lawn, dog run, boardwalk, shaded overlook, and gardens are open to all. And, the Dancing Fountains are open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The fountain pours into a large canal (11 inches deep) where kids are free to wade, splash, and plunge.

Pack a picnic: Make a day of it by hitting up La Famosa. This all-day eatery brings soulful Puerto Rican cooking to the neighborhood. They even offer signature cocktails and virgin drinks to-go.

The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring Friends School

With a self-guided aerial forest, a high ropes course of 190-plus platforms in trees, 13 trails of varying difficulty, 29 zip lines, nearly 200 challenge bridges, a labyrinth, and the new Monkey Grove, which has 10 trees outfitted for climbing, it’s amazing this place has any room left for picnic tables. But it does! And that’s a good thing because you’ll need to refuel after all that climbing. Check the website for age and size restrictions for each activity, but in general, everything is open to kids 5 & up. Entry fees also vary by activity.

Pack a picnic: You'll need a filling meal after all that fun, and we found the perfect picnic carry-out. Founded in 1997, Sister’s Sandwiches and Such is a family-owned business that prides itself on quality ingredients and the unique and delicious food options that our customers have come to crave. The only thing missing is the basket.

US National Arboretum

With over 400 acres to explore the US National Arboretum is tons of outdoor fun with a little bit of history and education thrown in. Pick a spot to eat and then let your little ones play amid the old National Capitol Columns in the Ellipse Meadow. Work up an appetite while on a family hike to check out the gazebos and take in the trees from all 50 States.

It’s home to Mother Goose, Cinderella’s pumpkin coach, a giant atop a beanstalk and more – all renovated from a now-defunct storybook park. Between bites at the large designated, covered picnic area, take a cow train or pony ride and check out the petting farm. Hayrides, pony and cow train rides are $2 apiece.

Pack a picnic: Stop by Little Market Cafe to order one of their signature sandwiches. The vegan menu options are delicious. Not a sandwich crew? Don't worry. They've got great pizza too.

Jonas Green Park

Throw open your picnic or beach blanket, and get ready for a waterfront picnic. This small park is located on the Severn River and features picnic areas, fishing, and a beach for free cartop boat launching. There are incredible views in every direction. The epic view of the Naval Academy across the river is breathtaking. The park closes at dusk, but the fishing pier is open 24/7, so grab your rod and stick around for a beautiful sunset.

Pack a picnic: It wouldn't be Annapolis without a picnic featuring Maryland Blue Crabs. Yes, the mess is worth it. Cantler's Riverside Inn is the perfect place to order a little crabby carryout. Ask for brown paper, and you'll have easy cleanup.

Great Falls Park

Dine by an incredible natural wonder at this beautiful park. Choose from a picnic table or tons of green space for your lunch spot. After you wrap up your meal, head out on one of many hiking trails perfect for even in the tiniest hiker. Or, find your way along one of the accessible paths to get a fantastic family photo op in front of the falls. The snack bar is still closed, but you can often find a local food truck in the parking lot.

Blue Ridge Center of Environmental Stewardship

The name makes it sound like a museum, but don’t let that stop you from visiting this gorgeous area. The small nature-based playground will keep little ones running and jumping for a while. The Farmstead Loop trail is easy and accessible for all ages (even a jogging stroller). Keep an eye and an ear out for the babbling brook just off the trail. Your crew will love splashing around and drying off on the bank while enjoying a picnic together.

Pack a picnic: On your way to the outskirts of Northern Virginia, stop by Fabbiolli Cellars, a locally-owned and operated winery (a great picnic spot for another day). In addition to a delicious selection of wine and cider, they have fresh-baked bread on-site and lots of picnic treats to choose from.

Brookfield Zoo has unleashed more than 30 life-sized animatronic re-creations of giants that roamed free during the Ice Age. Ice Age Giants introduces kids to a 15-foot-tall woolly mammoth, an oafish 20-foot-long giant ground sloth, a 12-foot-tall giant bird, a fearsome 5-foot-long saber-toothed cat and more. Adding to the lifelike effects, parts of the animals move, making the experience even more realistic.

Visit the Animals at Lincoln Park Zoo

No matter the time of year, a visit to the always-free-admission Lincoln Park Zoo is a no-brainer. On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through October, kids can plant, weed, compost and harvest with Lincoln Park Zoo volunteers and staff from Green City Market. The green-thumb fun at Edible Gardens includes planting tomatoes, pulling weeds, thinning carrots, harvesting green beans and digging purple potatoes.

Originally launched in 1888, the SS City of Seattle is the oldest surviving ferry on the West Coast and you can doze off to the sounds of water lapping against the side of this historic houseboat in Sausalito’s harbor. The cheerful yellow boat has three bedrooms and all the amenities you would expect, including kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. A ten-minute walk takes you to the restaurants and shops of Sausalito’s marina or catch a ferry over to San Francisco. When ready for some dry land time, Muir Woods National Monument and Mount Tamalpais are but a short 20 minute drive away.

Step Back in Time at a 1920s Inn

Benbow Inn is a historic, 1920s hotel deep in the heart of the old-growth redwood forests of Humboldt. The hotel is located a little over three hours north of San Francisco, but the redwoods alone are worth the drive. Benbow Inn gained fame for attracting a slew of stars during Hollywood’s golden age, due to its seclusion and stunning setting.

Take hikes in the redwoods, drive down the Avenue of the Giants—or through a tree—and hunt for Bigfoot. You could also drive to the King Range Wilderness, an incredible stretch of rugged coastline with few visitors.

Regardless, Portland’s many landmarks and locations involving Black History stand for us to visit and admire year round, this month especially. It’s that time of year to educate, respect and appreciate the wealth of Black History Portland holds, and what better way than to lace on your tennis shoes and head out for a walking tour? Historical landmarks are aplenty and so are our recommendations of where to visit. Read on for more!.

Golden West Building

The third and final site included in U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer's appeal for ensured protection is the Golden West Hotel. Located on the corner of Broadway and Everett in NW Portland, you and your family are sure to have passed this historic building numerous times. Now it is used as space for subsidized housing but did you know it used to be a hotel? In fact, it was the first hotel in Portland to allow African Americans to stay as guests! Starting in 1906, the hotel acted as crucial housing for Black transient workers as they helped build north American railroad lines. Further, it became a gathering place of the NW Portland Black community, as several Black congregations were located nearby. Of course, there is much more to be learned about a building with such a seasoned history. If you find you and the family in northwest Portland soon, you should take the time to stop by so the next to you pass it, it'll mean more than just its name.

Mt. Olivet Baptist Church

Live in northeast? Great, you're probably just blocks away from this historical site! Located in Portland's Eliot neighborhood, Mt. Olivet Baptist Church marks the beginning of Black congregations in the city. Built in 1923, Mt. Olivet Baptist Church has stood for nearly a hundred years and served as a hub for Portland civil rights organizations between the years 1923 and 1973. U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer is currently nominating Mt. Olivet Baptist Church to be added to the National Registry of Historic Places. If successful, this will ensure protection of the church from demolition and guarantee that you and your family have a place to visit for many Black History Months to come!

Unthank Park

Located in Portland's northeast neighborhood between N Shaver and N Failing Street sits Unthank Park. This community hub offers numerous amenities and activities for you and your family like basketball courts, playgrounds and baseball fields! Beyond the nature of the park, though, is its history. Unthank Park is named after Dr. DeNorval Unthank who worked in several Portland hospitals (Providence, Good Sam, etc.) and engaged heavily in public service work. The city of Portland dedicated the naming of this park to him in 1969 for his work against racial discrimination. So whether your family are more sports fanatics or picnic goers, head to Unthank Park this Black History Month to honor Dr. Unthank and his accomplishments!

Charles Jordan Community Center

Take your kids on a field trip to this local community center that was renamed in2012, in honor of Charles Jordan, Portland’s first African-American City Commissioner and Portland Parks & Recreation Director. Known as the force behind the creation of beloved Portland landmarks like Pioneer Courthouse Square, the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, Delta Park, and Southwest Community Center, Charles Jordan broadened the agenda of the environmental movement and land conservation to make it more inclusive on a national stage. Additionally, he is known for putting people of color at the heart of the American Conservation Movement.

Verdell Burdine Rutherford Park Playground Project

Spring is on it's way, and you will want to head to the parks. Your first stop should be the Verdell Burdine Rutherford Park. If the name isn't familiar, that's because, the former Lynchview Park was renamed Verdell Burdine Rutherford Park in June of last year. Verdell Burdine Rutherford is a prominent black female civil rights leader and historian who lived in Oregon from 1913 to 2001. She lead the civil rights movement in Oregon and as secretary of the Portland chapter of the NAACP she helped pass the Oregon Civil Rights Bill in 1953, which outlawed discrimination in public places on the basis of “race, religion, color or national origin.”

The parks has been renovated with new playground area, pathways, irrigation improvements, and other park amenities that little and big Portlanders will love and enjoy year round. Now it's also the perfect place to give your child a quick Oregon Black History lesson.

Dean's Beauty Salon And Barber Shop

Along with Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer is requesting that NE Hancock Street's Dean's Beauty Salon and Barber Shop be added to the list of protected historical places. Since 1956, Dean's has been serving the Portland community and is Portland's oldest Black-owned salon! This space is a coveted staple of the Black community of Portland and still flaunts its 50s charm for us today. Take the family for a photo and appreciate this Black owned business that will surely go down in history.

The Dream Statue

ComicCon, COVID Vaccinations and Black History Month - the Oregon Convention Center [OCC] truly does it all. But this month, don't worry about donning a mask and going inside. This historical landmark can be enjoyed outside in the courtyard! While the Oregon Convention Center has over 20 art displays, "The Dream" statue boldly represents Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as he delivers his revolutionary speech. Built in 1990 by sculptor Michael Florin Dente, this is a monument you and the family must surely visit on your February walking tour of Portland's historical sites. PCC Margaret Carter Technology Education Building

Margaret Loise Carter was born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1935. She graduated salutatorian of her senior class. She escaped an abusive relationship by moving to Oregon where she became a teacher's assistant in the Portland Public Schools. After attending and graduating from Portland State University in 1972, she enrolled for her Masters in educational psychology and eventually ended up working as a counselor at PCC.Sen. Margaret Carter’s personal and professional association with the college covers five decades, when she began taking classes at the Cascade Campus to support her baccalaureate studies. In 1984 she rand for state office and became the first African American woman elected to Oregon legislature and spent serving in either the House or Senate for the next 28 years. Take your family to Carter's old school stomping grounds where they can check out PCC Margaret Carter Technology Education Building: a tribute to this history making woman.

With three different days of events spanning a wide range of topics, all of which are free and open to the public, there is more knowledge to be gained than there is time. One of our picks for the best theme restaurants in NYC, Max Brenner is dedicated to all things chocolate, including hot chocolate. (They have a full food menu as well.) Pick from dark, milk, or white hot chocolate, or one of the many flavored options, such as Mexican spicy hot chocolate, Oreo, peanut butter, or the "Italian Thick", melted blocks of chocolate with fresh vanilla cream. You can get all of these to go, but sipping there means you get to experience the signature Max Brenner "hug mug", shown here. Reservations are recommended.

Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain

A longtime favorite spot for locals, tourists and film scouts (this place looks like an old school soda fountain and ice cream parlor) Brooklyn Farmacy serves a classic cup of cocoa several ways. Options include oat milk hot chocolate, hot chocolate topped with whipped cream or house-made toasted marshmallow fluff, or the delectable salty caramel hot chocolate. Love it? You can buy a tin of it to bring home and make it yourself. Brooklyn Farmacy is closed Tuesdays.

It's not cheap and it’s not basic, but for a fancy outing with a child with discriminating tastes, SoHo shop MarieBelle is worth a trip. Antique furnishings and sparkling chandeliers complement fine chocolates of all kinds and a hot chocolate the store describes as "thick and decadent." Choose from a menu with variations such as Aztec (an "Oprah's Favorite Thing"), spicy, Tahitian Vanilla, white chocolate and even hot chocolate with natural banana pulp. A refined menu of cafe bites such as quiche, soup and crepes offers light eating options.

Before he became a television star alongside Nicole Byer on Nailed It! Jacques Torres was (and still is) “Mr. Chocolate." Unhappy with the quality of chocolate that was available to him while working as a pastry chef, Jacques Torres constructed his own factory so he could make chocolate exactly the way he wanted from scratch. Try a cup of Classic, made from real chocolate, not powder. Or if you're more daring, go for the Wicked, with its extra kick of allspice, cinnamon and ground chili peppers. Both varieties are so thick they might be mistaken for milkshakes. Tip: They’ll let you try a little sample before you choose your cup. And FYI, JT also sells a Hot Chocolate Gift Set.

The Chocolate Room is known for all of its outstanding chocolate products, but the Dark Hot Cocoa is our favorite. Made with 61% Belgian chocolate, it is one of the cafe's most popular drinks. Obviously, this is a good choice for chocolate-lovers; pair a cup with the brownie sundae or the chocolate pudding.
