Sometimes you need to get crafty and creative without making a run to the store, and National Cereal Day is the perfect day to take advantage of what’s in your cupboard. From crispy fried chicken to science experiments, we’ve found 10 interesting ways you can amuse your kids with cereal. Scroll down to see how!

1. Make a Fruit Loop necklace. Fruit Loops are perfect because they are colorful, but you can just as easily use a Cheerio or other round-with-a-hole-in-it cereal. This is less about the cereal and more about the hand-eye coordination involved making them.

2. Snack Necklaces. Since you’ve got that string out, add cereal and a few pieces of dried fruit and make an on-the-go snack. We love this easy, boredom-busting activity from Blair Lonergan. Get the details at The Seasoned Mom.

3. Crunchy Baked Chicken Tenders with Cereal Flakes
Cereal: it’s not just for breakfast anymore! This genius recipe from Jessica Gavin swaps out the traditional breadcrumbs for super crunchy Honey Bunches of Oats. Kids will go crazy for the golden-brown coating, and the zesty orange dipping sauce adds an extra punch of flavor. Click here to get the recipe.

4. DIY Surprises. Using Ziploc “snack sized” or smaller baggies, put little items in the cereal box to surprise the kiddos. It can be as simple as a note or a joke or a little trinket or plastic ring. Be sure and seal the bags well and watch little ones who might not know or notice.

5. Upcycle like the Royals. Keep that empty box around and make your kiddo a crown! Find out how Momtastic did it here.

6. Grow a cereal tree. This one is fall themed but you can use any kind of cereal to change the “seasons.”

The Build-A-Bear Adult collectible featuring Swarovski crystals is a sparkling, ivory-colored, 10-inch bear made with ultra suede fur. As Build-A-Bear clearly states, this gorgeous bear, which is priced at $85, is definitely not intended for kids under the age of 15. It does, however, make a beautiful gift for a special occasion, like an anniversary or Valentine’s Day.

What comes first? Goodnight Moon or This Is Us? Since we can’t definitively answer the question about the chicken or the egg, it’s doubtful we’ll get to the bottom of this question either. Regardless of our philosophical conclusions, after watching last night’s episode the real takeaway is: from this point forward, we will never be able to have one without the other in our heart space Thank you, brilliant This Is Us writers.

But the more compelling question is, “Whose soul-bound idea was it to write Goodnight Moon into the script anyway?” Weaving such a unique thread through an episode set out to prove the human collective has shared experiences across every spectrum is creative genius. Whoever you are, I’m still giving a standing O over here. Listen close and you’ll hear my robust display of hand clapping echoing through time and space.

Here’s the thing. Goodnight Moon is a simple book. No glitz, no glamour—just the story of a bunny saying goodnight to the world before going to sleep. And the simplicity is what turns this tiny classic into a family favorite. Goodnight Moon is a universal, feel-good, tuck-your-kids-into-bed staple for every parent. Who knew a make-believe book with 132 words could touch hearts across the globe? And who knew a T.V. show with pretend story lines could annihilate hearts across the same globe?

This Is Us reminded us we all walk through life with similar journeys in which we experience joy, face hardship, celebrate success, and fight demons. We aren’t alone in our own universe—all of us fall asleep under the same moon. And if we can remember everyone has a story, maybe we can muster up more compassion for our fellow man. The writers used another stroke of genius to help us hone in on this truth with the parallel of everyone has a story they read their child before bed. Just wow.

Because both the book and the show are forever classics, I thought we all could use a This Is Us version of Goodnight Moon.

Goodnight This Is Us

In the great Pearson room

There was a husband and wife

And the Big Three

And many pictures of-

Their family tree

And there were three little hearts stock full of love

And five plates

And a pair of soulmates

And a little yellow terrible towel

And a deep sense of wow

And a Buddhist necklace and a lunar pendant and a Pilgrim Rick descendent

And a quiet karma, warm and resplendent

Goodnight Pearson room

Goodnight family tree

Goodnight hearts beating with glee

Goodnight light

And the Big Three

Goodnight hearts

Goodnight love

Goodnight plates

And goodnight soulmates

Goodnight Bec

And goodnight Jack

Goodnight yellow terrible towel

And goodnight sense of wow

Goodnight Buddhist necklace

And goodnight lunar pendant

Goodnight nobody

Goodnight Pilgrim Rick descendent

And goodnight karma, warm and resplendent

Goodnight stars

Goodnight air

Good night beautiful memories everywhere

And, um, #ThisIsUs writers, this show can never end. Like never ever.

It takes more than, “I think I can” to make your little believers fly; they’re also going to need a little pixie dust. But where to get it? Follow this simple step-by-step DIY pixie dust recipe and your kids will be Neverland-bound in no time.

pixiedust-supplies

What You’ll Need

Glitter (at least two different kinds)

Mixing bowl

Spoon for mixing

Vials for holding pixie dust (available here, or at your local craft store)

Labels

Baby powder, if you plan on sprinkling your dust outside (see last step)

Step 1: Pour in the sparkles

Let your little Peter Pans or Wendys pick and pour their glitter into a medium to large-sized bowl (bigger bowl = less mess). Fine glitter works best for pixie dust, but you can toss in different grains to add dimension (and sparkle!) to your finished product. Note: Keep your glitter away from carpets or furniture; it takes some real magic to get sparkles out of fabrics.

pixiedustbottle-step1
pixiedustbottle-step2

 Step 2: Spoon Into Vials

What vials, you ask? Amazon and Etsy sell multitudes of magical-looking tiny glass bottles (some even have attached loops to turn your vials into necklaces!) perfect for pixie dust. If this is a last-minute sort of project and you don’t have time to order in advance, look in the jewelry section of your local craft store to find small bead containers. Even better? Just look around your house: Old salt and pepper shakers work great — just dab some glue over the holes if you don’t want glitter all over everything, or tell your tiny Tinkerbell to keep her sparkle-spreading strictly outside.

pixiedustbottle-step4

Step 3: Slap a Label on It!

Once your jar is filled and closed, let your kids make a special label for it. Don’t skip this step: This is what turns a simple jar of glitter into a magical vessel of super-special fairy dust.

pixiedust-label

Step 4: Enjoy!

Let your kiddos keep their pixie dust in a special place — or make it into a necklace by twisting tiny eye screws into your bottle corks.

pixie dust label

Step 5: Want Something Flashier?

If your spell-casters want to throw their pixie dust instead of bottling it up, simply add equal amounts of baby powder to glitter — then take it outside and toss it by the handful. Kids will love seeing their pixie dust go POOF as the glitter falls to the ground. (Note: This version doesn’t look as pretty in a bottle, so it’s best to keep it for tossing.)
