For Deliciousness on Demand in Queens & Brooklyn: Martha's Country Bakery
Martha's Country Bakery is a destination for both coffee- and dessert-lovers alike. Founded in 1972, it's now a mini empire, with five locations throughout Brooklyn and Queens. (You can find them in Forest Hills, Astoria and Bayside—and in two spots in Williamsburg.) Shops are stocked with full cakes made daily, and staffers are happy to customize with a birthday message or sign. Martha's makes cakes in almost 20 flavors, but ones especially popular for kids' birthdays are strawberry shortcake, strawberry/banana, and Oreo mousse. (We are wild for the berry napoleon.) You can get a seven-inch cake for $40, or an eight-inch for $43; larger sizes and sheet cakes are available, too, and you can even order online for cakes from the Williamsburg store at 263 Bedford.
This Forest Hills, Queens bakery describes itself as an "Asian American Cake Boutique", and makes both inspired cupcakes and cakes for celebrations and every day treats. Styles include chiffon cakes, buttercream cakes, as well as vegan and gluten-free. Go classic with your flavors (chocolate, vanilla, red velvet), or less common and Asia-inspired with strawberry chantilly, green tea, purple yam, and black sesame-flavored cakes and fillings. (See all the options here.) Pre-made cakes are available, and they will make a custom cake to your design as well. Can't make it to Forest Hills? Silk Cakes delivers to Manhattan—just make sure you order at least two days in advance.
Birthday party planning can be overwhelming, and sometimes figuring out the cake goes by the wayside. If you need a boffo cake with quick turnaround, consider one of the Xtreme Cakes from Butterfly Bakeshop's 48 hour Collection, created with procrastinators everywhere in mind. If you've got more time, they are also happy to make a custom cake in the form of pretty much anything you can come up with, as evidenced by the Minecraft-themed cake shown here.
If you follow social media, you’ve seen these cakes taking NYC by storm, and yes, they are indeed "exploding"! Cut into them and an explosion of sprinkles and colorful confections comes pouring out. Then there’s the various colors of layers, the sweet icing, and the sprinkles on the outside that make this cake a favorite with young kids, tweens, and grown-ups alike. But beware: this cake might become the hit of the party, no matter who is booked for the entertainment!

For Fans of Magnolia Bakery: Buttercup Bake Shop
Buttercup Bakeshop
After helping to open Magnolia Bakery (the spot made famous by the gals on “Sex and the City”) Jennifer Appel was up for a solo venture. She started Buttercup Bake Shop, and this store’s classic American desserts have been wowing customers for years. The layer cakes are as delicious as her cupcakes, and will please grown up guests as much as the kids. There are many flavors to choose from, and it’s worth a trip to the midtown location to also sample the many puddings or bars...and pies, and cookies and bundt cakes!
If you prefer the look and taste of a fluffy, buttery frosting, Billy’s Bakery is the place for you. Like most of these bakeries, custom cakes require just 48 hours notice, but Billy’s Tribeca location will even host your party.

For Classic Cakes from a European Pastry Chef: Der Pioneer
A relative newcomer to the scene (it opened in early 2017) Der Pioneer has quickly gained a devoted following. Björn Böttcher and Greg Barbiero are behind this Kensington cafe, where Böttcher, a classically-trained pastry chef who has worked in European luxury hotel kitchens and beyond, creates delicious and refined—but still kid-approved—desserts both big and small. Flavors and fillings include dark chocolate, milk chocolate mousse, and white sponge cake with passionfruit mousse, and cakes come in 6-inch ($28), 10-inch ($52), and half-sheet cake ($110) sizes. We're still thinking about the birthday cake we ate at a kid's bash a few months ago. Amazing.

The Strawberry Shortcake from 120 year-old Italian bakery Veniero’s probably isn't the first thing to come to mind when you think of a kid's birthday cake, but we’re here to tell you this cake is a crowd pleaser. And the shop sells so many every day, you can just walk in a buy a fresh one — and you can ask them to dedicate it. (A fridge stocked with other flavors like Oreo Cheesecake and Tiramisu cake, is there for your perusal, too.)

Mia's does cake any which way you like it: classic cake, cupcake, cake pops — all in traditional and more exotic flavors. The bakery will decorate something from its extensive menu of cakes with a simple "Happy Birthday", or create an elaborate custom confection. (The shop routinely displays impressive cakes in its windowed storefront.) Sampling here is easy — a bit too easy. Slices are displayed in the massive illuminated case, along with the other sweets, which also include tarts, cookies, etc. The roomy cafe and a menu of coffee, teas and more will get you to stay a while. Good news: Mia's Bakery is now also in Manhattan, near Times Square.
To Have Your Singular Cake Concept Realized: Sweet Amanda Leigh
Sweet Amanda Leigh
Got an idea you need executed? (Or want some help coming up with a birthday cake that will blow your kid's — and everyone else's — mind?) Check out Sweet Amanda Leigh. Owner Amanda Leigh Maffucci specializes in custom-made cakes, and will talk with you about what you want, and the little guest of honor, to make a one-of-a-kind confection for the big day. Flavors run from the tried and true — deep chocolate and classic vanilla — to the festive and uncommon, such as "funfetti" and "almond gossamer," although Maffucci is happy to create any flavor she does not offer. Frostings and fillings range from chocolate and vanilla buttercream to fresh strawberries and "toasted marshmallow." Our sources tell us the cakes taste as good as they look! Custom cakes start at $150.
If you’ve seen a naked cake it was either from this place, or inspired by it. While there are many imitators, this is original, created by sweet master Milk Bar owner Christina Tosi. (She's also the genius behind cereal milk ice cream, compost cookies and crack pie birthday cake.) The newest take on this now classic is that you can customize the naked cake to suit your celebrant's tastes, picking everything from the filling layers to the crumbs. Milk Bar has eight locations throughout NYC.
Sadly, Butter & Scotch's brick-and-mortar location (a bar) is no longer. But you can still get one of its amazing birthday cakes! With rich vanilla cake, pink frosting and rainbow sprinkles, the cake both looks and tastes really good, making it a crowd pleaser revelers of all ages. This cake was named New York magazine’s “Absolute Best Birthday in NYC”, and so yes, their cake is their best seller.
This storefront bakery on 8th Ave. in Chelsea became well-known for its many homemade versions of a Twinkie, but any neighborhood mom will tell you, their cakes are what’s celebrated on the kids birthday party circuit. This Gowanus Brooklyn bakery swears you can't tell the difference between its gluten-free cake and the alternative. (Its gluten-free baguette is served at the River Cafe, so they must be doing something right.) And, you can even get one on the same day as long as you call before 11 a.m. (Procrastinators, rejoice!) Plan ahead and choose from flavors including yellow, chocolate, and red velvet cake; frostings of Italian buttercream, or whipped cream, and fillings of fresh fruit, pudding, and chocolate ganache. Cakes start at $85 for a seven-inch round, which serves six to 10 people.
Proudly declaring on their web site, “we’re vegan and organic all the time, and gluten-free when you request it,” this bakery in Brooklyn makes great looking cakes and they avoid soy, too. Having a winter baby means finding an indoor birthday party spot, especially considering Boston’s chilly climate. While you can definitely go the bouncy house route, sometimes it’s fun to branch out and find a venue with a personality that matches your kiddo’s. Whether yours loves to play, game, cook or create, we’ve got an indoor birthday party place to match. Here’s where to plan your next celebration.
Where to Celebrate with Little Kids
Boston Playground
It’s everyone’s favorite indoor playground, so it only makes sense it’s a popular indoor party spot too. Hosting a birthday here is super simple, whether you plan a simple private playdate, or bump it up a notch and make it a private party for just $50 more. If you take the plunge, you’ll get access to the private party room, plus an additional 30 minutes of play. Prices start at $175 and can accommodate up to 40 guests. You bring the décor, food and cake and let the folk at Boston Playground handle the plates, napkins and cutlery.
Good to know: If the playground doesn’t entice your kids, maybe a Nerf Wars or Archery Games party will. They’re great for older kids and are offered at the same location.
This colorful playspace and school in Brookline is a mecca for toddlers. It’s got everything the need to have a good time including games, toys and costumes. When you book at birthday party here, you’ll have access to the whole space during the 2.5-hour party. BYO food and cake, they provide the tableware and cutlery. The price is $400, or you can email about custom arts and crafts party options.
Because it doesn’t get easier than planning a kids’ party at a museum dedicated to play, booking this bash is a no-brainer. Partygoers can enjoy cake, ice cream and a fun celebration in the dedicated party room after exploring over three floors of educational fun and festivities. Parents will love the dedicated party coordinator who’s there to help set up and clean up. Parties start at $600 for up to 25 guests, and they’re booked in 3-hour blocks on the weekends. As this is a popular party spot, we recommend booking at least 2 months in advance to get the weekend you want.
North of the city is where you’ll find this indoor playground that caters to kids under six. Like many of Boston’s playspaces, this one has everything you need to keep kids active for the whole two-hour party session. They’ve got swings and slides, kitchens and markets, trampolines and climbing arches to make kiddo’s imaginations take flight. Parties range from $200-$300 and can include up to 46 people. We love the add-ons, like custom party themes and special craft projects. Food is BYO, or hit up the food truck across the street. Just remember, this is a nut-free facility.
If you’re looking for a wide open space for toddlers to party and play, it doesn’t get easier that the Little Loveage Club downtown. For $900, families get the 5,000 square feet to spread out in, and all the toys babies and toddlers love. Parties are booked on Friday evenings and the weekends in three-hour slots, and there’s seating for up to 16 youngsters, with a 60 person maximum so parents can stay to enjoy the day.
When it comes to magical parties, Sugar Plum Parties tops the list. Their decked out space includes gorgeous tables, a stage where kids can perform, dress up costumes and hair and nail styles so every partygoer can look their best. There are two ways to party here—by hosting a personal play date for two to three kids ($125-$150) or by going all in on a party package (starting at $430). Parties are for 5-10 guests and it’s where parents will get the most bang for their buck including invitations, DIY favors, themed tables, a fruit and pastry tray, and most importantly a Sugar Plum Fairy helper. We love the storybook character meet-and-greets that are an easy package add-on.
If art and pizza sound like your kid, book a party at The Glass Bar in Needham. With two party options, you’ve got choices. Kids six and up will decorate a mosaic tile before noshing on pizza and cake. Kids nine and up can try their hand at glass fusion first; then it’s time to celebrate. Parties are for up to 16 kids and it’s a parent drop-off dream (only hosts are allowed to stay).
Whip up fun at this party spot for budding chefs ages five and up. Along with 7 of their friends, the birthday kid can cook two to three dishes and decorate cupcakes alongside Create a Cook’s experienced staff. You choose from cool cooking themes (think: Asian wraps, Mexican, cupcake wars and more), and everything is taken care of, down to the aprons little chefs use. The package costs $550 and party favor bags can be added for $15 each.

Valentine’s Day is almost here, and parents who have allergies in the home know that the balance between finding safe products and enjoying sweet treats is (almost) as challenging as getting the kids to stay in bed after the lights go off. It can be hard to track down candies and chocolates that fit into your family’s needs, so we compiled this list of allergy-friendly items to help you out. Keep scrolling to see the different, yummy options!
Take refuge during Boston’s coldest months when you duck in to play at one of our favorite indoor spots
If there’s one thing Boston families can count on in winter, it’s super chilly days. And while we’re definitely fans of sledding and ice skating during Boston’s winter, we also know sometimes it’s nice to find a warm, cozy playspace indoors. So when your kids are bouncing off the walls, count on Boston’s best indoor playgrounds to come to the rescue. They’ve got everything kids need to stay entertained (and warm) on cold winter days.
Best Boston Indoor Playgrounds for Babies & Toddlers
1. The Children’s Piazza
Designed for the youngest players, ages 5 and under, this peaceful indoor playground is hard to beat on a cold day. Kids can frolic on the wooden climber, make tracks on the train table, and even swing on the swing set. Imaginative play takes center stage here with a stage for puppet shows, dress-up clothes, and a craft room. But the best part has to be the café where parents can grab a cup of hot coffee and something to eat while the kids play.
Let your kiddo’s imagination come alive at this playroom that caters to littles. Watch your creative cutie jump from one station to the next, building with Magnatiles, running a pretend restaurant, shopping at the “market”, or playing with trucks and trains. There’s even a craft station for budding artists. They’ll be ready for naptime after a few hours here.
We all know toddlers need room to roam, and that’s one of the best things about the VinKari Safari indoor playground. Kids can move from one colorfully decorated room to the next as they climb through tunnels, make their way down slides, bounce in the inflatables, and take off on a ride-along.
The multi-level climbing structure that’s a maze of bridges and tunnels, and has an interactive slide, is just part of the draw for toddlers here. They can also play in pretend city, a little town where they’ll find everything they need to dress up and imagine. The separate toddler play area is tops. Its soft toys, merry-go-round, and animal swings make it a great place for just-walkers to play. And the ball pit is always a hit, no matter what age.
Indoor Spots Preschoolers & Kindergartners Will Love
5. Boston Playground
This Chelsea play spot is a favorite for a reason. It’s got everything kids need to stay active when the weather isn’t cooperating, including a sporty bouncy house, climbing wall, and ninja course where kids can practice their stealth skills. If they’ve still got energy left to burn, a game of soccer pool followed by fort building should do the trick. Bring on naptime!
Jam Time is an award-winning indoor playground that feels like your living room—only bigger. And it’s got the space you wish you had to house gorgeous wooden play structures and a bouncy house, alongside everyday playthings like train tables, kitchen sets, and climbing tubes. Remember to bring your socks to play here, and a snack (as long as it’s nut-free) to keep the kids fueled for playtime.
If you like a side of gaming with your indoor playspace, look no further than KidSports. It has got the requisite climbing walls, bouncy houses, and oversized slides. But kids will love adding on a game of laser tag, bowling, or plaster painting to switch up winter playtime. Just be warned, they’ve got flashy arcade games here that kids find hard to resist.
Let Grade School Kids Run Free at These Play Places
8. Sky Zone Trampoline Park
The sky’s the limit on a cold winter day when you bring the kids to this trampoline park. Big kids will love the ninja warrior course, sky joust, and freestyle jump zones, plus the dodgeball and basketball courts where they can game. Our favorite part is the special jump times they offer each week, like Little Leapers, Frozen Leapers, and a Friday night Glow session for kids ages 5 and up. You’ll find fun for the whole fam here.
Adventure awaits at this two-story ropes course inside Jordan Furniture. As they make their way along the course (harnessed and tied off, of course), kids will encounter 30 different elements like zig-zag beams, rope ladders, spaghetti hand lines, and the exciting Sky Rail zip line. Whether you all climb together or you cheer your kids on from below, this is a can’t-miss adventure you’ve got to try.

10. Launch Trampoline Park
If your kids are bouncing off the walls, why not lean in? Big kids will love the chance to burn energy as they bounce from one trampoline to the next, play dodgeball and basketball, attempt the ninja course, and maybe even play a round of laser tag or two. The on-site eats and arcade let families hole up here for as little or as long as they want on a blustery winter day.
