Every family had different rules regarding screen time limits. Using screens right before bedtime can impact how your child sleeps. This is most evident in children who struggle to self-regulate their behavior.

girl tablet

According to a study from the Arizona State University Department of Psychology, frequent media use before bed leads to later bedtimes and less sleep.

Researchers followed 547 children aged 7 through 9 for a week and measured their media use and sleep patterns. The parents of the participants kept daily diaries that tracked the children’s media use and sleep patterns. They also completed a survey that asked about their children’s temperament, including their ability to self-regulate behavior.

For the entire week, the children wore specialized wrist watches called actigraphs that tracked their movement and also ambient light. The actigraph data gave the research team detailed information about when and how long the children slept.

“Among kids who used the same amount of media in the hour before bed, we found differences that were explained by a personality characteristic called effortful control,” said Leah Doane, associate professor of psychology at ASU and senior author on the paper. “Kids who score low on measures of effortful control are the ones who struggle to wait to unwrap a present or are easily distracted. We found a strong association between media use in the hour before bed and when these kids went to sleep and how long they slept. Media use before bed was not associated with the sleep of kids who scored high on measures of effortful control.”

The children slept an average of 8 hours a night and used media before bed for an average of 5 nights during the study week. Children who did not use media before bed during the study week slept 23 minutes more and went to bed 34 minutes earlier than children who used media most nights during the study week.

“Media use was generally associated with a shorter sleep duration, but this effect was most pronounced in children with low effortful control,” said Sierra Clifford, a research scientist at ASU and first author on the paper. “The impact of media on sleep was also an average affect, meaning that it reflects habitual media use rather than occasionally staying up late to watch a movie.”

The children who scored low on measures of effortful control slept the least amount of time when they consistently used media in the hour before bed during the study week. These children slept approximately 40 minutes less per night. Media use before bed did not affect the sleep of children who scored high on effortful control, which was approximately 35 percent of the study participants.

“Media exposure mattered for the children who measured lowest in effortful control,” Clifford said.

Children with low effortful control might struggle with switching their attention from watching media before bed to calming down and falling asleep. But because effortful control is a personality characteristic, it is more difficult to change.

“Instead of parents wondering how to help their child better regulate their behavior, they can try to focus on creating more consistent sleep and media use schedules,” Doane said.

The work is now available online in Psychological Science.

With birthdays, holidays and general “let’s eat a cupcake” days, every baking parent needs a few go-to recipes in their apron pockets. Even if you’re going box cake (not that there’s anything wrong with that) this easy frosting recipe will give your cake or cupcakes the from-scratch feel. It has a creamy texture that rivals any store-bought frosting and kids can lend a hand (it’s really hard to ruin this frosting). Scroll down for the recipe.

Ingredients:

1 stick (real!) butter (that’s 1/2 cup for most kinds)
1 8 oz. box cream cheese
1 cup (or less) powdered confectioner’s sugar (less sugar gives it a tarter, cream cheesier flavor)
1-2 tsp. of vanilla (or other extract)
Food coloring (optional)

Method:

1. Let the butter and the cream cheese sit out until they are soft, about room temperature. (This is the part that takes the longest, we swear.)

2. Once they are malleable, put the butter and cream cheese in a bowl. Use a hand or stand mixer on medium speed, whip the butter and cream cheese together. Beat for about 3-5 minutes.

3. Once the cream cheese and butter mixture is sufficiently blended, add the sugar, 1/2 cup at a time until blended, tasting along the way for flavor.

4. Add the vanilla, blend, and then add the food coloring of your choice.

One batch frosts about 6 cupcakes generously or 12 cupcakes lightly.

Tips: To double the recipe (which you probably will) just remember the one to one to one ration. One stick of butter, one box of cream cheese, one cup of sugar.

Add a little less sugar, sub the vanilla for coconut or almond extract and your frosting takes on a whole new personality.

Eyeglasses can add an additional flair to your kid’s style, but is there a style or frame shape that is better suited for their face shape? How do you know what the best frame shape is for their face shape?

As the co-founder of Jonas Paul Eyewear, my team and I have spent quite a bit of time studying frames and faces, and can recommend the best frames to accentuate each face shape and bring out the personality behind the lenses. Here are a few of my tips on the best way to find stylish kids glasses to accentuate their already sparkling style and personality. And if going into a store sounds overwhelming, many eyewear companies now offer home try-on kits so you can explore and try on various styles in the comfort of your home.

Oval Faces: If you’re not sure if your child has an oval face shape, take a look to see if they have balanced proportions, high cheekbones, and a chin that is slightly narrower than the forehead. To maintain the natural, balanced proportions of an oval face, I always recommend finding frames that are not overly wide or tall to steer away from creating an illusion that your face features are disproportionate. Faces that already have a naturally balanced look will do best with these types of medium-sized frames.

Round Faces: Typically, if your kid has a round face, it means that they have soft angles, a slightly curved jawline, and a jawline that is slightly narrower than the forehead. Finding st‌yles that contrast the shape of your face, such as rectangular st‌yles with a narrower eyeglass, will help better define their features and make their face appear longer. A few of our st‌yles, such as The Maddie or The Lincoln are the perfect example.

Square Faces: With angular features, a strong jawline, and cheekbones that are about the same width as the forehead, square face shapes are usually better suited with circular frames, as they tend to soften the angles of the face. If you’re not sure where to begin, glasses that have softer curves or edges will definitely accentuate the sharp features in you or your child’s face. Again, it’s all about contrast!

Heart-Shaped Faces: For heart-shaped faces with high cheekbones, a wider forehead that narrows down to a smaller, defined chin, and a sharply tapered jawline, I recommend lighter, more airy frames, both in color and in material. This st‌yle can make heart-shaped faces appear to be more balanced and symmetrical from top to bottom, reducing the width of the forehead. St‌yles like The Maddie and The Paul are a great option to test out with your little ones!

While it can feel overwhelming to test out new styles or freshen up a look (even as adults!), always remember, it’s an ongoing journey. Try and find what feels most comfortable for your child, test it out, and don’t be afraid to ask for help!

Laura, co-founder and COO of Jonas Paul Eyewear, started the brand with her husband shortly after their first child, Jonas, was born with a rare-eye condition. From there, Jonas Paul Eyewear was created with the mission of creating stylish eyewear and providing sight to children in need with every purchase.

When it comes to academic success, it’s not just studying that makes a difference. A new study found that students with higher emotional intelligence tend to gain higher grades and achievement test scores.

In the report published by the American Psychological Association, researchers looked at data compiled on more than 160 studies, including over 42,000 students from 27 countries, published between 1998 and 2019. The students ranged in age from elementary school to college. So what did they find?

photo: stem.T4L via Unsplash

The findings showed that regardless of age, students with higher emotional intelligence were more likely to earn higher grades and do better on achievement tests than those with lower emotional intelligence scores.

“Although we know that high intelligence and a conscientious personality are the most important psychological traits necessary for academic success, our research highlights a third factor, emotional intelligence, that may also help students succeed,” said Carolyn MacCann, PhD, of the University of Sydney and lead author of the study. “It’s not enough to be smart and hardworking. Students must also be able to understand and manage their emotions to succeed at school.”

So what is the reason emotional intelligence has such a big impact on academics? There are several factors, according to MacCann. “Students with higher emotional intelligence may be better able to manage negative emotions, such as anxiety, boredom and disappointment, that can negatively affect academic performance,” MacCann said. “Also, these students may be better able to manage the social world around them, forming better relationships with teachers, peers and family, all of which are important to academic success.”
