From Chicago and Pittsburgh-style to, of course NY-style pizza, we’ve found the best pizza spots in LA worth your time and money

Is there anything more comforting than a delicious, piping-hot pizza? Uh, doubtful. And luckily, LA is having its very own pizza renaissance with more and more incredible pizza joints leveling up the pie game every day. (Thankfully, gone are the days when people would quietly chuckle when they mentioned pizza for dinner in LA). Nowadays, it’s almost (almost) too hard to keep up with which pizza joint is the best. But we did our research and are excited to deliver what we’ve known all along—not all pizza is created equal. After many bites and stuffed bellies, we’re delivering the best pizza in LA that is worth your time and hard-earned dollars.

Where to Find the Best New York Style Pizza in Los Angeles

Danny Boy's: New York City native, Daniel Holzman, owner of Danny Boy’s Famous Original Pizza in DTLA, says the secret to authentic New York Style pizza is in the water temperature used to make the dough—41 degrees to be exact. Holzman believes that making a premium pie is all about the flavor of the dough, the perfect cheese blend, using Stanislaus tomatoes for the sauce, and creating the right structure of a true New York slice—when you fold it to take a bite, it should crack, but not break in half.

Good to Know: The shop is only open Mon.-Fri. so make sure to get your pizza fix on a weekday.

U Street Pizza: When the crew behind Pasadena’s crazy popular Union Italian restaurant decided to open a pizza place last spring, it was bound to be a booming success. Executive Chef, Chris Keyser, brings his East Coast roots to create one of the best New York style pizza shops in town by concentrating on the crust—thin and crispy with the perfect amount of breadiness. Flavors run from classics like pepperoni and a fab sausage pie to pizzas topped with little neck clams, fresh garlic, lemon and Fiscalini Cheddar.

Insider Tip: Save room for dessert. Kiddos will definitely want a bowl of U Street’s amazing soft serve for dessert.

Secret Pizza LA: Sean Lango, the once anonymous owner of Secret Pizza LA, started his highly successful pizza biz out of his apartment during the pandemic. As a New Jersey native and major pizza lover, he was looking for a way to supplement his income when his job as a musician came to halt during COVID. After a lifetime of making pies for friends and watching people work in his favorite pizza joints back home, Lango learned how to make a simple, yet unbelievably perfect New York style pie. He began advertising on Instagram, and a viral sensation (and business) was born. He sold a limited number of pizzas out of his apartment each week with orders consistently selling out every time. This past July, Lango moved his small business into a Moneticito Heights space where customers can still book time slots for weekend pick-ups via Instagram links. New orders open on Mon. at 11 a.m. sharp. Act quick cause slots go quickly.

Where to Find the Best Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza in Los Angeles

Masa: In the heart of Echo Park is Masa, a mom and pop, family-owned restaurant specializing in Chicago Deep Dish Pizza made with love by a true Chicago son. With a two-inch-deep cornmeal crust, hand-crushed whole pear tomatoes and fillings like Masa’s secret recipe Sweet Italian Sausage & Authentic Hot Giardiniera imported from Chicago, it’s one of the best in LA for sure. But one of the sweetest parts of coming to Masa is the warm, welcoming atmosphere where you always feel like family.

Gino's East: For Chicagoans who are living in LA, Gino’s East feels like a real taste of home. The beloved restaurant got its start in Chi-Town where according to the owners, "People know pizza." Lucky for us, they’re now serving up authentic deep dish in Sherman Oaks, along with 15 TVs highlighting Chicago sports, comfy booths for piling in the whole family and lots of Chicago memorabilia on the walls.

Where to Find the Best Detroit Style Pizza in Los Angeles

DTown: Crowned "World Champion of the 2021 International Pizza Competition," it’s no surprise DTown’s Detroit-Style pizza has gained such a devoted fan following. Run by Chef (and Michigan native) Ryan Ososky, DTown is turning out deep crust square pizzas with incredible flavor, perfectly caramelized crust and such divine texture it would impress even the most die-hard Motor City critic. We especially love The Goomba Pepperoni with pepperoni and fennel.

Quarter Sheets Pizza Club: Echo Park’s Quarter Sheets Pizza Club knows exactly what they’re doing when it comes to making "Detroit-ish" pan-style pies. What started as a pop-up during the pandemic, is now one of the most sought-after brick-and-mortar pizza shops in town. There are just a few flavors to choose from—our fave is the Red Top with mozzarella, red sauce and Grana. And the desserts…oh man, the desserts are a must as well—Quarter Sheets’ Slab Cake is what dreams are made of.

Where to Find the Best California Style Pizza in Los Angeles

Side Pie: If we can thank the pandemic for anything, it’s sweatpants and that many of LA’s most inventive pizza shops were created during that time. Among them, Side Pie started as a pop-up in the side yard of owner Kevin Hockin’s home in Altadena. Hockin constructed a dome shaped pizza oven in his backyard, finessed his outstanding wood-fired recipes and word quickly spread about his insanely delicious pizza. Today, Side Pie has its own retail space and is still cooking up delish pies like The Bobby Green with kale, mushrooms, mozzarella, lemon oil, onion, parmesan and garlic or The Ramblin’ Peach with peaches, mozzarella, ricotta, basil and honey.

Where to Find the Best Pittsburgh Style Pizza in Los Angeles

Gorilla Pies: Ever had a Pittsburgh style pizza? Well, Chef of Gorilla Pies, Benjamin Osher, is here to change that. Pittsburgh pies have a puffy crust with a smoky edge, a bit more heft to the bread than their New York counterparts, lotsa mozzarella and a really, really diverse range of toppings. If your fam is feeling adventurous, we say check out The Rabbi with pastrami, Swiss-smoked kraut-chi, red cabbage, Reuben sauce and Caraway seed crust.

The Best Artisanal Pizza in Los Angeles

Pizzeria Bianco: Widely regarded as one of the best pizza makers in America, Chef Chris Bianco, finally brought his highly successful pizza restaurant, Pizzeria Bianco, all the way from Phoenix to LA. What makes his pizza a standout and has earned him countless accolades is his meticulous usage of the highest quality seasonal ingredients possible right down to the salt and pepper, making his own cheese and sausage and cooking everything to absolute perfection in a wood-fired oven. Make sure to check out the Sonny Boy and the Rosa pizzas during dinner service—you will not regret it.

Double Zero Venice is the second location for his New York-based flagship with a goal of bringing a healthy perspective to the world’s most popular food. Notable pizzas include his Truffle Pizza with cashew cream, wild mushrooms, Tuscan kale and lemon vinaigrette, as well as the Pesto Pizza with macadamia ricotta, zucchini, arugula and parmesan.

Whether you prefer sourdough crust, deep dish, Detroit-style, or topped with Indian flavors, the Bay Area pizza scene really delivers

Fresh dough, gooey cheese, and just the right amount of sauce—pizza is a recipe for deliciousness for parents and kids alike. The Bay Area pizza scene offers lots of options for little foodies like the curry chicken masala pizza of Curry Pizza House and the potato-topped pizza from Escape from New York Pizza. We won’t say which is our ultimate favorite (because that’s like choosing a favorite child) but you’ll find top spots from Point Reyes to San Jose, perfect for a lazy night with no cooking needed.

Best Pizza in San Francisco

Long Bridge Pizza Co.
If thin crust sourdough pizza is your thing, Long Bridge Pizza Co. is your pizza place. Actually, if Detroit-style pizza is your thing, then Long Bridge is also your pizza place because they sell that on their popular Square Thursdays. Named for the wooden causeway that connected San Francisco to Dogpatch in the 1800s, Long Bridge is in a neighborhood that’s great to explore, and particularly good for the kind of exploration that involves food. If you still have room after your ‘za, waddle over to Neighbor Bakehouse next door or the Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous ice cream shop a block away.

Escape from New York Pizza
It’s nice to have a good stand-by when you need an easy, no-frills, counter-service meal while you’re in Downtown San Francisco, and Escape from New York Pizza is that place. (There are other locations in San Francisco, but we're partial to the bright and airy Financial District one with seating on the plaza.) See if the kiddos can spot King Kong climbing the wall. You must order their famous You Say Potato! pizza covered in roasted potato slices, copious amounts of garlic (copious!), pesto, and of course mozzarella. It’s worth the stinky breath afterward and your kids are stuck with you so what are they going to do about it?

See all four of their San Francisco locations here.

Pizzeria Delfina
Pizzeria Delfina is San Francisco’s golden child and with good reason. Their pies are perfection, but the crowds and long waits could be a pain for families. There are four Bay Area locations, and we recommend the Fillmore one for its enclosed parklet where the kids can run around.

Arizmendi
This local cooperative serves up some of the tastiest pie around, even if they were the target of parody in Pixar’s “Inside Out.” They only offer one type of pizza per day, and it’s never cheese and pepperoni (more like shiitake mushroom, leeks, and sesame vinaigrette) but even so, they are known as a kid fave. Order by the slice—we also suggest adding a corn cherry scone—and pull up a chair in their Mission location, or grab a spot in the parklet outside of their Inner Sunset location. They offer par-baked (or fully baked) pies for takeout, and the price is right, especially considering the top-notch ingredients.

Zante
If you haven’t tried it yet, the thought of Indian pizza may leave you scratching your head. But one bite and you’ll be hooked. Zante’s corn-meal-dusted crusts are the perfect base for their incredibly flavorful toppings—spinach, eggplant, cauliflower, ginger, garlic, green onions, and cilantro. The no-frills restaurant at the base of Bernal Hill is spacious, works well for large parties, has high chairs, and rarely has a wait.

Tony’s Pizza Napoletana
Tony, an 11-time World Pizza Champion, must be doing something right. His North Beach restaurant is an ode to regionally specific pizza (he has various types of ovens for various styles of pies) and turns out spot-on New York, New Haven, Detroit, St. Louis, Romana, and Sicilian pizzas—not to mention tasty pasta and other Italian specialties. There’s a small take-out shop for quick and easy slices.

State of Mind
Often you find a pizza place with an excellent crust but a so-so sauce, or a to-die-for sauce but a nothing special crust. Not so at State of Mind where both are perfection. They offer round, pan, and gluten-free pizzas, and have curated a can and bottle list showcasing their favorite craft breweries throughout California. Don’t miss their old-school pizza restaurant arcade, which is also available for private parties.

Blue Line Pizza
The talented pizza lovers from SF’s beloved Little Star are behind Blue Line, which now has seven locations around the Peninsula and East and South Bay. We especially love their Burlingame location, with its spacious back patio lit by twinkling fairy lights. Blue Line is known for their deep dish, but their thin crust, salads, and sandwiches are delish, too. We love that instead of crayons, they provide kiddies with Magnadoodles with the kids’ menu printed on the back! And don’t miss out on their totally adorable heart-shaped pizzas next Valentine’s Day.

See all their locations here.

Rise Pizzeria
Grab a spot outside by the fire pit and enjoy a slice of Neapolitan pizza at Rise Pizzeria in Burlingame. This spot boasts tasty pizza with a healthy twist. Gluten-free crusts and dairy-free cheese are just two of the options that make this a great spot for those who have dietary restrictions. Parents will appreciate that Rise has swapped out the traditional soda machine for options like lemonade, iced tea, and apple juice. There is also a sister restaurant, Rise Woodfire, in San Mateo.

Best Pizza in the East Bay

Square Pie Guys
Square Pie Guys specializes in Detroit-style pizza which means they have what they describe as a “crispy, crackly, caramelized cheese crust.” It’s like the pan pizza of your youth but done deliciously right.

Zachary’s
Deep-dish pizza lovers say Zachary’s is the winner. They do a completely balanced deep dish layered "upside-down" to keep the crust crisp. The downside? You guessed it: The wait can be unbelievably long. Because the pizzas take 30 minutes to cook anyway, they have guests order when they arrive, so that by the time you are seated, your pizza should be nearly ready.

See all five of their East Bay locations here.

Pizzaiolo
If you like your pizza night complete with a craft cocktail, this is your spot. Kids will give the Margherita a thumbs up, while the other creative, high-quality dishes (not to mention the killer cocktail list) will elevate family pizza night to something a little more special.

Patxi’s Pizza
With many locations around the Bay Area, Patxi’s has become an institution for Chicago-style pizza. Their Dublin location doesn’t disappoint, with a pick-up window as well as a fantastic outdoor patio. Don’t forget the honey at the table to drizzle on the crust. Mangia!

Curry Pizza House
If you have a Curry Pizza House in your neighborhood, consider yourself lucky as it's just the break from ordinary pepperoni your family is craving. We recently checked out the carry-out-only San Jose location on Union Ave. and found the staff to be friendly and the pizzas to be full of fresh ingredients with your choice of traditional or Indian flavors. We suggest going for a half-and-half of the curry chicken masala and the curry veggie delight with a side of achari wings and masala chips. They even offer vegan options.

Pizza My Heart
There are dozens of new spots intent on mastering the craft of pizza making, but we have a soft spot for the ones keeping it FUN. Always incredibly family-friendly, Pizza My Heart really wins on Tuesdays, when from 4-8 p.m. they put the kids to work. Kids are given a pre-shaped pizza dough on a mini pizza pan, along with a squirt bottle of sauce, mini-containers of shredded cheese, and their choice of toppings. It’s then whisked away and baked up for a dinner they’ll love.

Click here to see all of their locations, mostly in the South Bay and Peninsula.

A Slice of New York
“ASONY” for those in the know was founded by New York transplant, Kirk Vartan, who knows what New York pizza is all about. You know it’s a good pizza when a simple cheese pie is perfection. The garlic knots are sublime and their dessert menu runs the gamut from tiramisu and cheesecake to imported East Coast must-haves like Yodels and Devil Dogs. There are two locations, both covered in fun New York subway decor. The original San Jose location is takeout only so we prefer the Sunnyvale one that includes an entire subway car! Don’t miss the notices on the walls about who has been banned from the restaurant for various infractions, including stealing a Rubik’s Cube.

Giovanni’s Pizzeria
No self-respecting New York-style pizza place would put chicken on pizza… would they? Any bad taste in your mouth from previous experiences elsewhere will disappear when you come to family-run Giovanni’s. They have all the usual toppings of course, but the stand-out is the Rustica with roasted chicken, garlic, tomatoes, and fresh basil. You’ll be licking your plate if you haven’t already eaten it directly out of the box on the ride home.

Amici’s
Amici’s is a pizza juggernaut in the Bay Area for good reason. Their East Coast style pizzas with a thin chewy crust are the gold standard. Our favorites are the margarita pizza with fresh basil and tomatoes, the hearth-baked breadsticks, and the artichoke Panzanella salad. At the Mountain View location Penny the Robot sometimes delivers the pizza to your table! Amici’s also is a great location for school fundraisers as they give a big chunk of change back to the school.

Bibo’s Pizza
If New York-style is your jam, then Bibo's is your spot. This Willow Glen pizza joint specializes in those giant, thin slices that are best enjoyed by folding in half. They use almost a pound of their special mozzarella on each 20-inch pie—a combo of buffalo milk and cow's milk that will send your taste buds into overdrive. Don't want a whole pie? Swing by for a slice. =

Pizzalina
Pizzalina’s heated outdoor patio is a great place to dig into an app of burrata before devouring a Neapolitan-style pie cooked in a wood-burning oven. Cafe Reyes
Make this cozy small town restaurant a stomach refueling spot on that day trip to West Marin or do like the locals and take the windy half-hour drive when you’re on the other side of Mt. Tam. Pizza Hacker
Inside the new biergarten in Tam Junction you’ll find Pizza Hacker, the new outpost of the San Francisco pizzeria that excels at nicely charred, naturally leavened (a.k.a. sourdough) crusts. The Short Bridge pie is a winner with soppressata, housemade sausage, mushrooms, and parm. They also offer a Charles E. Cheese IV pizza which they describe affectionately as “a kid’s cheese pizza” (it’s a margarita without the basil). The salads are serious businessthe Intermezzo is a burst of color and flavor and includes radicchio, rainbow carrots, little gems lettuce, chickpeas, a farm egg, and poppyseed dressing. It’s a spot where vegans can be happy, toofor $2 extra you can get Miyoko’s vegan mozzarella on your pie.

Pizzeria Picco
From their perfect pies to their housemade soft serve, Pizzeria Picco wins on all counts. Just a couple blocks away from a magical redwood park so we suggest going to get your hike on and then heading over for an early dinner. Their petite pizzas make ordering multiples a must, which is a good thing because there are typically nearly a dozen choices, each featuring local, seasonal ingredients. The pies come out of the wood-fired oven perfectly blistered and can be paired with equally amazing salads, soups and sides. But the real bonus is the aforementioned soft serve. Our fave: A twist topped with housemade caramel and crunchy sea salt.

Tamalpie Pizza
This place is quintessentially Marin—the name is an ode to Mt. Tam, and from the thin-crust pies to the sizable beer menu to the dogs lounging near the outdoor, family-style tables to the menu items named after local hiking trails, it oozes NorCal charm. If you visit during the “kid rush,” from 5-7 pm, you needed to be prepared for a playhouse atmosphere, as this is the go-to spot for parents and kids in the area. End on an epic note and go for the banana split.

Between San Francisco and Sacramento, Fairfield is an under-the-radar destination that you’ve probably driven by a hundred times and never stopped. At only about an hour and a half from San Francisco, it’s a great getaway that requires little planning. If you’re looking for a low-key weekend with the kids, Fairfield is where it’s at. From kid-friendly activities like the famous Jelly Belly Factory to delicious wines with beautiful backdrops reminiscent of Napa, you’ll want to bookmark this itinerary for a future trip. Read on for what to do, where to eat, where to sleep, and of course, family tips for all ages.

What To Do

Jelly Belly Factory

Sandra Lee

A must-see for any candy lover, the Jelly Belly Factory gives families an inside look at how all those tasty little beans are made from start to finish. The self-guided tour is relaxed and at your own pace, with video segments describing the process along the way. With lots of windows so kids of all heights can see what’s happening in the working factory and interspersed games to keep little ones active, it’s a fun tour. There is a candy shop (of course) featuring the famous Belly Flops, as well as a cafe to counter all that sugar.

Family Tip: While the weekends are the most convenient, the factory does not run production on Saturdays and Sundays. Be sure to visit on a weekday to see it all in action. Check the website for most current hours.

Western Railway Museum

Sandra Lee

Another kid-friendly activity, the Western Railway Museum is home to some of the oldest, vintage trains and streetcars. There are over 50 cars on display and 22 miles of track, along with a shaded picnic area and cafe for snacks. Buy a ticket to the 50-minute train ride, where everyone gets to ride in a vintage car on old tracks with a conductor in full uniform. Afterward, take a tour at the exhibit, where you might get a chance to walk on board a vintage car and see the dining hall, a mock dining table setting with real China, a record player and sleeping quarters.

Family Tip: While the train ride is great for kids, the horn is loud and can be a bit much for the little ones. Be sure to warn kids ahead of time or skip it for sensitive ears.

Tolenas Winery

Tolenas Winery

If you think wine-tasting can’t be family-friendly, think again. Set in a beautiful Victorian white house surrounded by grapevines and open space in Suisun Valley, Tolenas Winery is a must-visit. Parents can sip on delicious wine like their unique white Pinot Noir on the front patio while the kiddos run around on the grass in the front lawn. The family-owned business has gone through three generations, with family at the center of it.

Family Tip: Bring snacks for the little ones to munch on as they play. The tasting experience is really all about relaxing and enjoying the scenery. Since we bet you’ll be there a while, grab some snacks for the kids to avoid the “I’m hungry” requests.

Suisun Creek Winery

Sandra Lee

Another family-owned winery and vineyard, Suisun Creek Winery is also a must-visit with kids in tow. The large backyard tasting room is set to the backdrop of mountains, vineyards and open space. The wine is just as delicious, like the Verdelho, a sweet wine perfect on a sunny day. Family owners Brian (winemaker) and Katie, along with their three kids, are all super knowledgeable about wines and the grapes of Suisun Valley.

Family Tip: The vineyard has a ton of open space to run and play. Be sure to bring appropriate shoes that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. That way you can enjoy the wine while the kids play.

Larry's Produce

Sandra Lee

An expansive 1,200 acres is home to fruits, vegetables, wheat and beans at Larry’s Produce. While locals and businesses grab the amazing produce during the week, visitors are in for a treat, especially the younger set. Not only can you pick fresh produce for the road, but they have a beautiful pumpkin patch with giant, varietal and mini pumpkins. There are also a lot of family activities that are free including hayrides, a corn pit and tons of space to run and play.

Family Tip: The stand is cash-only, so be sure to stop by an ATM before visiting!

Rush Ranch

Sandra Lee

Want a spot for the kids to run around, pick leaves, play with sticks, see cows and horses or go on a self-guided walking trail? Check out Rush Ranch on Grizzly Island Road. Purchased by Solano Land Trust in 1988, it’s now a part of the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. About 20 minutes from downtown, the ranch spans about 2,000 acres of marsh and rolling grasslands where kids can just be free with no agenda.

Family Tip: Check out the events calendar on their website. The Storybook Walk is especially fun for both kids and adults- a great way to be out in nature!

Where To Eat

Two60 Kitchen + Bar

Sandra Lee

Not only does Two60 Kitchen + Bar have delicious food, but the staff is super friendly, making this one a no-brainer. With standard kid menus complete with activity pages and crayons, and entrees like grilled cheese and chicken strips, little ones are set. For the parents, the drinks and wine menu are inventive and hit the spot after a day of touring. Entrees are delicious, but also note-worthy like the vanilla black pepper salad dressing or the Korean fried chicken sandwich.

Family Tip: For meat-eaters, order the lumpia, a recipe created by Chef Joey Jaraba’s mother and made in-house that even the pickiest of eaters will enjoy.

Saffron Indian Cuisine and Bar

Saffron Restaurant via Yelp

If in the mood for Indian food, Saffron is definitely a place to check out. While it doesn’t look like a fancy restaurant on the outside, the inside is decked out with chandeliers and plush booths and tables. The chicken tikka masala is a great choice, along with their naan bread and saffron rice. Great for date night or family dinner!

Family Tip: Lunch is buffet style, which might be a good choice for picky eaters or if you want a bit more variety.

Pizza Twist

Pizza Twist via Yelp

For a dinner that’s casual and fast without skimping on quality, a popular place to eat is Pizza Twist. Here you can get the standard Chicago-style cheese or pepperoni pizza, but the twist lies in their specialty Indian-inspired pies. Order halal chicken, paneer or spicy lamb kabob. It’s also diet-friendly with vegan, keto, gluten-free and vegetarian options available.

Family Tip: Order for take-out or delivery if the kiddos are tired after a long day and make it a movie and pizza night at the hotel.

Where To Stay

Hilton Garden Inn via Yelp

Hilton Garden Inn
If you are a fan of the Hilton family of hotels, the
Hilton Garden Inn is a good choice for families. Conveniently located next to HWY-80 and Jelly Belly Factory, the hotel has a heated pool, jacuzzi and big family rooms for space. Breakfast is served daily until 10 a.m. for a charge and there is a mini snack stand for last-minute cravings.

Family Tip: Check-out is at noon, but can be extended to 12:30 p.m. if you need extra time to go to the pool in the morning or go have a leisurely breakfast.
