Just Opened: Parent Craft Collective

After the cute pregnancy announcement comes the slightly less-adorable reality of childbirth education. But it doesn’t have to happen in a sterile environment with a group of strangers. The Parent Craft Collective, tucked into a garden apartment in Brownstone Brooklyn is a space so cozy you’ll think you’re dropping in on a friend. This new one-stop-shop offers an intimate experience of personalized classes, prenatal care, and newborn expertise. We went along to check out their new digs.

Personal Space
There’s a simple mid-century modern aesthetic to the Parent Craft Collective. The subtle wall art of the pelvic bone and the uterus is one of the few giveaways that it’s actually a prenatal education center.

Parent Craft founder and midwife, Casey Selzer is one of the key players in the collective and offers birth and labor sessions that are practical but not prescriptive. A mom of three, she was determined to offer personalized classes that were less about having a rigid birth plan and more focused on embracing the unknown with confidence. (As anyone whose given birth will tell you, that’s a healthy mindset!)

Meetups for All
Parent Craft offers classes for every stage of pregnancy. Group birthing classes are limited to no more than five couples and provide a toolkit of techniques to prepare for labor.  A class dedicated to the first weeks of newborn craziness (aka The Fourth Trimester) is offered to graduates of the birth sessions and covers the basics on the postpartum body and newborn care.

There’s also a preconception Seeds class for couples still in the planning-a-pregnancy stage who have questions or want help choosing a provider. Private sessions on any topic are also available, either at the Parent Craft space or in your own home.

Call The Midwife
The collective has a room overlooking the garden dedicated to prenatal visits by Community Midwifery Care. The staff of certified midwives provides the full range of pregnancy and postpartum support. At the heart of their practice is the understanding that each pregnancy is unique and they emphasize the importance of individualized care.

Community Centered
On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, babies replace bumps when the Parent Craft Collective hosts weekly breastfeeding and infant support sessions through Baby Caravan as well as newborn movement sessions provided by Child’Space NYC.

Community is at the heart of the collective and in addition to helping parents feel informed and able to enjoy their childbirth journey, staff are keen to partner with other organizations going forward to make their services more accessible to everyone, as well as strengthen and celebrate the bonds that are being made under their roof.

The “It Still Works” Viral Pregnancy Announcement Couple Has Awesome Update

After becoming viral sensations in early 2017, the “It still works!” pregnancy announcement couple have some adorable family updates.

First, a little backstory: in 2014, former dirt bike racer Todd Kreig was paralyzed after a biking accident. Following the accident, Kreig met Amanda Diesen, a recovery specialist at Kreig’s rehabilitation facility. Kreig and Diesen didn’t let their relationship stay professional for long… and before Kreig could pop the question, they found out they were pregnant. Hence, the “It still works!” pregnancy announcement and the birth of a viral meme.

In August 2017, Diesen gave birth to their son, Everett Jason Kreig. Rhett, as they’ve nicknamed their son, is growing steady and the former couple turned surprise family of three is loving every second of it, the challenges of newborn parenting included.

“The tough part for Todd is that he can’t help out as much as he’d like to,” Diesen told TODAY Parents. “If Rhett gets fussy he likes to be walked and bounced and rocked, but Todd is unable to do that.” Even so, Todd is not a hands-off parent. “We’re thankful, though, to have learned early on Todd can do a lot more than we originally thought,” Diesen said.

For couples struggling with infertility, the road to pregnancy is emotionally and often physically painful, not to mention isolating. Macy, also known as @martinisandmedicine on Instagram, posted her beautiful IVF pregnancy announcement, and it is giving hope to many couples dealing with an infertility struggle. In the touching photo, Macy surrounds her ultrasound photo with the syringes and pill bottles that were used in just one round of IVF.

“We’re some of the lucky ones. It only took 4 years, 3 miscarriages, depression, 107 hormone injections, one surgery, two procedures, over 100 suppositories, and several thousand dollars to get our baby,”says Macy on her blog, giving readers an idea of the struggle many families face when it comes to infertility. “I’m so in love I can hardly stand it. There will be hard days, I know. We’ve longed for them for years.”

Macy is being flooded with comments of support on her Instagram. One follower said “I have absolutely loved following your story on the IF board, PAIF, and our BMB. You gave me so much hope on my journey.”

Another person also resonated with Macy’s story. Mrsposada wrote “thanks for sharing! Went thru the same thing, ttc (trying to conceive) for 7 years and finally had our baby girl 2 1/2 years ago. Every time I look at her, I know it was all worth and would do it all over again if I had to! Go luck and enjoy the journey.”
