While it’s not a cure, parents of children with peanut allergies may be able to gain a little piece of mind thanks to a new drug aimed to help reduce severity of allergic reactions.

On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Palforzia, which can be used by children ages 4 through 17 to help increase their tolerance to small quantities of peanuts and decrease the risk of a reaction in case of accidental exposure.

Peanuts

Allergy sufferers will still need to avoid all peanut products, but this new drug marks a positive step towards preventing severe and even fatal symptoms.

“Peanut allergy affects approximately 1 million children in the U.S. and only 1 out of 5 of these children will outgrow their allergy. Because there is no cure, allergic individuals must strictly avoid exposure to prevent severe and potentially life-threatening reactions,” said Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, in a press release.

The drug comes in powder form which can be mixed into foods such as applesauce or pudding for easier dosing.

“Even with strict avoidance, inadvertent exposures can and do occur. When used in conjunction with peanut avoidance, Palforzia provides an FDA-approved treatment option to help reduce the risk of these allergic reactions in children with peanut allergy,” said Marks.

Even trace amounts of peanuts can cause allergic reactions including hives, digestive problems, and constricted airways.

The FDA noted that Palforzia is not to be used for emergency treatment in cases of anaphylaxis.

Long before slime was the hottest thing on the playground, it was covering kids and celebrities in its neon green glory on Nickelodeon. As a mom you probably already know every recipe for making the modern day schoolyard variety, but do you know what the O.G. stuff is made of?

If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, you are definitely more than familiar with Double Dare and it’s host Marc Summers. If you spent your afternoons watching kids get slimed, you might have wondered just what that green goop actually was. Now Summers, ironically also the host of Food Network’s Unwrapped, is explaining to the world just what that ooze was.

The secret recipe to the original Nickelodeon slime, as Summers explains, was “vanilla pudding, apple sauce, green food coloring and a little oatmeal.” Regardless of the recipe, your kids will definitely get a kick out of the fact that you were enthralled by slime when you were their age, too.

Let’s face it: instant pudding is the lazy person’s dessert and we are totally fine with that. But what if we told you that those magic little packets can not only make pudding immediately, they can also elevate your other desserts with minimal effort? Impress your family, your friends and your co-workers with these simple but oh-so-effective pudding hacks. Scroll down to learn more.

1. Add it to cookies.

Adding a pouch of pudding mix to any cookie recipe will take your cookie from yum to OMFG in seconds. Literally, seconds. Try out these Peanut Butter S’more Cookies from Chef in Training.

2. Add it to cake.

If you are making a chocolate cake from scratch or a mix, just make a quick batch of pudding and stir it in. Cut back a little on the other wet ingredients as needed. Or, if you’re really feeling low-key, just dump the package into the cake mix for flavor. Add milk instead of water if you want to blow their cake-eating minds. And yes you can, and should, also try this with brownies.

3. Inject it into cupcakes.

There are two ways to go about getting pudding inside your cupcakes. The easy method: slice off the tops and gently scoop out a spoonful of cupcake and then glob in a spoonful of pudding in its place. Replace the cupcake top and frost. The next-level method: using a baster or (better yet) a culinary syringe, shoot pudding inside your cupcake. This will be less of a filling and more of an overall moistening. And that is ay-okay.

4. Make frosting with it.

Since you’re going for it, add any flavor pudding mix to your basic frosting (powdered sugar and milk). Take it old-school and simple, like Spoon University and add Cool Whip too.

5. Pudding pops, of course.

We know, you already know you can turn instant pudding into popsicles. But did you know you can toss pudding mix, strawberries and milk into a blender and then pour into the molds for strawberry pudding pops? Apply this same theory to raspberries, coconut or whatever you fancy.

6. Yo, gurt! Plus, a fakeout.

Stir a couple teaspoons of instant chocolate pudding mix into plain or vanilla yogurt for a chocolate pudding vibe with a few less calories and sugar. Want to go lower? Just use cocoa powder mixed into your yogurt and call it pudding. They will probably not notice.

7. Layer it on.

Did somebody say parfait? Get crazy with your pudding and other yummy stuff layers to customize just the way kids like it. Just whip up a batch of your fave instant pudding, then grab a few glass jars or wine glasses. Add your pudding to the bottom and alternate with layers of whipped cream and your choice: we love cake chunks, cookie crumbles, fresh fruit, donuts, cinnamon rolls and even candy bars. Nobody said this would be low fat.

Whether you’re looking to expand your mini foodie’s palate or just want everyone to chow down on delicious grub, there’s no better place to do it than the newly opened Smorgasburg LA, a downtown weekly Sunday market filled with food and shopping. We’ve got the scoop on everything you need to know about bringing the family for a gastronomic adventure of epic portions, er, proportions!

Pack Your Appetite
What began as a spin-off of a flea market in Brooklyn quickly grew into a massive weekend market with over 100 vendors in NYC. The Williamsburg sensation has now made its way westward where it’s a natural fit in Downtown LA, the current foodie capital. The market, which features dozens of LA’s most Instagrammed menus, as well as vendors selling everything from clothes and antiques to dog bow ties, has taken up residence in the Alameda Produce Market. The five-acre, open-air courtyard is home to produce vendors during the week, but on Sundays it now transforms into a food lover’s paradise. Booths with all kinds of delicious eats and funky wares fill the space, along with plenty of tables and chairs.

If it’s a hot day, let your little eaters cool down in the mist tent, while you wait in the inevitable line at your favorite booth. With your bellies full, don’t miss a fun family photo-op at the official Smorgasburg LA photo booth.

The Best of the Best
With such a wide variety of offerings it’s easy to find something to please even the pickiest of eaters, as well as your more adventurous tots (and grown-ups). Of course there are a few vendors that are more kid-appealing than others. A few of the best include artisanal donut favorite Donut Friend, which offers mini versions of their most awesome flavors so you can get a sampling of several for the whole crew.  And you can check out the newest icy treat sensation, frozen pudding, at the Little Spoon booth.

Paloma’s Paletas is another tasty find, offering a rainbow of popsicles in flavors like pink lemonade and watermelon.  And Amazebowls will indeed amaze: it’s a smoothie, it’s a bowl, it’s both! These brightly colored acai filled coconut shell bowls may actually have your kids clamoring to eat something packed with superfoods, just be sure to hit the booth early as the line grows fast. PopdUp pours ice-cold juice beverages served in a take-home mason jar you can re-purpose for one those Pinterest projects you’ve been meaning to tackle. If you have really adventurous eaters and don’t mind a long line, discover what all the fuss is about at the uber-popular Raindrop Cake, a clear jello-like sphere with your choice of toppings, like a syrupy sugar sauce.

More To Come
The market will be hosting themed days, like celebrating National Ice Cream Day and hosting a Record Fair. Pop-ups and special events will be included in the mix and a kid-centric zone is also in the works. Check their Facebook page for what’s happening this weekend.

The Deets
Smorgasburg LA is open every Sunday from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. There is plenty of free 2-hour parking in the new structure right next door. Strollers are welcome and definitely recommended as it can get crowded and easy to lose sight of your tiniest eaters. There are several umbrella-shaded tables available around the market, but make sure you pack your sunscreen if it’s a hot day as the rest of the place is pretty sun-soaked. Bathrooms are port-a-potties. As with most things, the earlier you arrive to beat the crowds and the heat, the better. No dogs allowed, so leave your fur-babies at home.

Our verdict?  We can’t imagine that the NY original is any better, and this fabulous array of foods is perfect for both finding something for everyone in the family and simultaneously getting even picky eaters to try something new.  This welcome addition to the LA food scene makes for a perfect destination or drop by on a Sunday.

Summertime means hot days, cool treats, and sticky fingers covered in melty, soupy not-so-iced cream. But there’s a new treat in town, and Little Spoon’s delicious, frozen and packable dessert are ones that you can bring along for beach days, road trips, birthday parties and lazy park afternoons. With no fuss and half the mess of ice cream, frozen pudding by LA’s Little Spoon will make you and your puddin’s pop with joy.

More Than Just Your Average Pudding
Little Spoon pudding cups aren’t your mama’s snack pack. Chef Hannah Canvasser (co-founder of the new LA company with Jason Kessler) transforms her handmade delicious pudding into a creamy, rich frozen dessert mixed with fun, all-natural inclusions like graham crackers, marshmallow cream and vanilla wafers. With palate pleasing flavors like Nana Banana (just like grandma used to make), Caramel Latte (coffee hour transformed) and Campfire Chocolate (cold and creamy s’mores), this pudding perfection is appealing to both the budding foodie and pintsize sweet tooth alike. An all-inclusive pudding pioneer, Little Spoon currently offers 5 flavors including both vegan (Coconut Cream Pie) and gluten-free (Brown Sugar Vanilla) options.

Pudding A-Go-Go
The idea that makes Little Spoon pudding packaging ingenious for parents is that while you buy it frozen, there’s no need to eat it that way. Enjoyed frozen or thawed, this is one cool treat that is meant to be savored, not devoured. Unlike the classic summertime favorite, frozen pudding doesn’t melt. Instead of a chocolate puddle and endless tears of disappointment, you’ll still have a delicious cup of cool, thick pudding to enjoy at your leisure.

Thanks to the cute, single-serving cups, this frozen delight travels with you to all of your family adventures, making it easy to toss a pack or two in lunch boxes, camp snack packs, beach bags or coolers.  The delicious melt factor also makes them perfect for summer birthday parties, where kids often get a big scoop of the frozen stuff, just to set it down and come back to find a flavored puddle of cream.  Which means tears, and a second bowl.  That will also melt in minutes…

Pudding Party
Right now, Jason and Hannah have no immediate plans for a storefront of their own. Instead they’re focusing on bringing the pudding to you by way of private parties and events. When they’re not livening up a party, you should expect to find their custom-made freezer cart and vintage cooler at street fairs around town like Abbot Kinney First Fridays and Smorgasburg LA.

Special Delivery
Can’t wait for an event to get your pudding fix? Check out their website to see where they’re carried and head to one of the several gourmet food markets from Santa Monica to Pasadena that sell Little Spoon to big fans. You can also have it delivered right to your door (or anywhere else in the US) in a convenient pack of 8 pudding cups, completely frozen in a reusable freezer tote. Thanks to Little Spoon, beach days just got a lot sweeter.

What’s your favorite summer sweet indulgence? Share it with us in the comments!

Parents say the darndest things–especially when no one else is around. In public, our parenting can be filtered for social appropriateness. Think: “Of course you can’t have a slice of 10 layer chocolate cake right now–you haven’t eaten dinner.” But once at home our tunes might change (because we all need to occasionally indulge in 10 layer chocolate cake, right??). Here are some examples of how–once we are out of the public eye–we keep it real with the little people we love the most in this world.

photo:Crazybananas via flickr

1. “Yes, you can eat dessert for dinner.” Part two to that statement: “Just don’t tell mom.”

2. “I guess I know who loves me.” You swear you only say this when they refuse your hugs.

3. “If you want to live in a pig pen, be my guest.” Obviously it’s not okay, but you’ve tossed out enough plastic pudding cups and chunks of dried up play-doh to last a lifetime.

4. “The next time you misbehave, the people under the stairs are going to get you and take you away.” Yikes! When all else fails resort to scare tactics.

5. “I brought you into this world, and I can take you right back out!” Sounds like something your mom would say. Also…#scaretactics.

6. “I’m telling your dad.” Kids aren’t the only ones good at tattle telling.

7. “Because I said so.” Sometimes we just need to take the easy out.

8. “You don’t really need to learn to tie your shoes–that’s why they invented velcro and slip-ons.” You know it’s true.

9. “I could eat your face.” When your baby is just that cute, you can’t help yourself. Nom nom.

10. “I’ll tell grandma you’re asleep.” Because pulling teeth would be easier than getting your kid to talk on the phone right now.

11. “Get it together!” Whether they’re old enough to understand what that means or not, subconsciously, it’s a verbal declaration that’s as much for you as it is for them.
