What makes you feel thankful? Hopefully, one of the items on your list is spending the holiday with loved ones. If you’re looking for ways to make this feast even more memorable, you’ve come to the right place.

Your family traditions create an ongoing saga of your life. Honor those you love most by creating routines that reinforce the cohesiveness of your squad. Whether you sit down to sup with an extended family group or a small circle of friends, you’ll look forward to inventing new variations of these yearly rituals.

1. Start a Gratitude Game. In the commotion of prepping, it’s easy to overlook the reason for the holiday. Keep gratitude at the forefront of your celebrations by inventing different games to honor the emotion.

Each day leading up to the festivities, start dinner conversation with, “This just in.” Then, prompt each family member to share one thing they’re grateful for that day. Alternately, create a thankfulness tree where you hang small ornaments symbolizing the things you appreciate. You can decorate with origami notes and open them as you sit down on Turkey day.

2. Reinvent Dinnertime Chit-Chat. Does political divisiveness in your family leave you stressing over whether Uncle Joe will throw the gravy boat again? Why not head off awkward dinnertime conversation by including appropriate prompts inside your place settings? You can write questions that encourage friendly introspection, such as, “What is something you wish you knew more about?”

3. Create a Potluck Theme. Do you prepare everything — from soup to nuts — for your Thanksgiving feast? Create a new tradition by having guests arrive early and bring their favorite finger snacks. One guest might contribute kale and white bean artichoke dip while another brings an exotic salad. Set a theme for each year, and encourage revelers to bring dishes appropriate for those with food allergies.

4. Get Creative With Your Turkey. When it’s time to make the bird, do you go the traditional oven route? If so, make your feast day fresher by mixing up your mode of preparation. You can grill a turkey with a jalapeño injection for a spicy twist on a Thanksgiving favorite. As a bonus, you’ll reduce the fat and calorie content while keeping your bird juicy.

Think beyond the traditional turkey. More people today opt for vegan or vegetarian lifest‌yles. Consider trying a mushroom lentil roast or other plant-based dishes. You could also skip the roast idea altogether—who says you can’t celebrate the Italian way with lasagna?

5. Redesign Traditional Dessert. Yes, you could stop at the grocery store and pick up a prefab pumpkin pie—but where’s the fun of that? Let your guests know you slaved away in the kitchen without saying a word by trying one of these inventive desserts:

  • Apple spice cake
  • Cranberry nut bread
  • Pecan pie brownies
  • Pumpkin pie truffles
  • Caramel apple cheesecake

6. Place Non-Monetary Wagers. If your gathering resembles many, you’ll follow your Thanksgiving feast with some televised football. Sure, you could bet $5 on the game. However, why not let everyone get involved in the fun—even the kids—by making wagers non-monetary?

You could bet that the losing team has to wash and put away the dishes, for example. Since networks usually broadcast several games, you can simplify cleanup efforts. Perhaps the losers of the next match run the vacuum cleaner and wipe down countertops.

7. Play Some Board Games. Who says you have to glue yourself to the TV? Break out the board games to make Thanksgiving more memorable. Games like Twister give you a mild yoga workout while providing laughs. Everyone can enjoy simple card games such as Uno or Slapjack. Break out the whole collection—some relatives can relax with chess while others get into Monopoly.

8. Burn Off Those Calories. If the weather permits, head outside after your big feast and take a walk—or play some mini Olympic games. You can make a homemade bean bag game out of pool noodles, for example. You can also set up a simple obstacle course or play old favorites like Red Light, Green Light.

Is it too cold to head outdoors? If you have a video game console, rent games from your local library for no or low-cost. Some organizations allow you to rent the system, such as the PlayStation or Wii, too.

9. Give Back in an Original Way. Many people volunteer at a local food bank for Thanksgiving. While noble, most community help organizations have ample hands during this time of year. They do, however, need assistance at other times—commit to helping during a non-peak period.

Alternately, consider making care packages for the homeless with items like warm socks and gloves. Include personal hygiene products, such as tampons and hand sanitizer. Your local dollar store offers such items for very little money. The best gift is recognizing the humanity in others, so smile and make eye contact when handing these out.

Shaken, Not Stirred

Ok. We feel really, really bad about the whole cone of shame thing. But for a night or two of fantastically cheap thrills, add two soft green olives and enjoy the show. Nothing beats a puptini.

Cookie Monster

istolethetv via Flickr

While the brown pups get the pot roast glory, the blue ribbon in the cookie category goes to all the white ones. Take it a step further and use food coloring to dye their fur green before sandwiching them in a cardboard cookie, and viola! A mint oreo you have!

Cool Cat

Petful.com via Flickr

This feline brings some serious street cred to the table. With nothing but a child's baseball cap, some athletic attire (any toddler's should do), and a bit of bling, you can turn your kitty into the coolest cat around.

Pot Roast Pup

istolethetv via Flickr

While we'd never actually put a pup on a platter, this one sure does look pretty darn good dressed up with roast carrots and potatoes.

Fur Baby

istolethetv via Flickr

If we're being honest, most of us have a pet who we still think of as our first baby. With nothing but a bib, a onesie and a pacifier, you can bring that belief to life for a night. We're pretty sure your pups will let you sleep more than the last baby to wear the onesie.

Scratch My Ears ... All Six of Them

istolethetv via Flickr

What's better than a three-headed dog for a creepy critter? For extra effect, help your pooch don this outfit in the morning before the kids come down for breakfast on a school day. They might not eat anything before the bus run, but they'll definitely be awake for morning announcements.

Muttley Phelps

istolethetv via Flickr

Go on, give that pooch a gold medal. Pets put up with a lot—especially in households with toddlers—so not even an Olympic committee would deny a gold medal for a good family dog. Add goggles, and you've got yourself a swimmer!

Nacho Average Costume

Matthew Dillon via Flickr

While this look works for any dog or cat (or bird or hamster...), really, it's perfect if you're the owner of a chihuahua.

Off to the Races

Matthew Dillon via Flickr

When you have a large dog in your household, you might sometimes feel like the path from your kitchen to the front door is a race track, especially when those Amazon boxes arrive. Go ahead and complete the look by adding a lightweight stuffed animal with goggles on it to a dishtowel, secure it behind your dog's collar, and watch that jockey go to town.

A Satisfying Saturday Night

istolethetv via Flickr

When you've washed and dried your hair, rolled it and taken out your contacts, all you really need for complete bliss is a tub of ice cream and Netflix. This pup is halfway to nirvana. Or, for a scarier effect, turn your pup into the wolf in grandma's clothes. Either way, the rollers are a solid win.

Puppy Simmons

istolethetv via Flickr

If you have a large wig and a tank top, you're all set for an evening with a furry Richard Simmons. But if you only have a wig—regardless of the 'do—you're still in luck. Dogs (or cats) with hair are amazing.

Jailbird

istolethetv via Flickr

With a toddler's onesie, you can pull this off with minimal effort. Create hands to stick on the arms of the onesie (the little ones from the Tiny Hands board game would be ideal), slide their front paws through the leg holes of the outfit, and tie the neck to your pet's collar. The movements are hilariously lifelike, and there's no end to the "lookbook" of possibilities.

Joanna Gaines is taking over the world one step at a time. Not only is the HGTV star starting her own network along with hubby Chip, but the Gaines family is also significantly expanding their Silos grounds district—including a brand-new coffee shop!

Even though the shop is still under construction, Gaines has already named the space. Magnolia Press, inspired by the slow-roasting French press brew method, is slated to open this coming fall. If it’s anything like Gaines’ other projects, you’re going to want to take a trip to Texas for a cup of Jo’s joe.

In a recent Magnolia blog post, Gaines announced the addition, writing, “Coffee has a way of grounding me—that morning cup is a simple reminder to celebrate the new day, and then there’s the occasional afternoon cup that serves as a pick-me-up and gives me something to look forward to.”

Gaines continued, “Every coffee shop seems to create its own magical cozy world full of personality, character, and charm. The chatter, the aromas, and the warmth all invite me to stop and reflect—even if only for a moment.” It’s this “magical cozy world” Gaines plans to create in her own coffee shop!

If your kitchen skills aren’t exactly Top Chef-worthy, one Twitter user has a garlic peeling hack you need to know about—right now!

We’ve all been there. The recipe calls for minced garlic and you have whole cloves. You could smash the garlic and try to pull away the peels. Or you could try a fancy schmancy garlic press.

But if you’re looking for an easier option (and really who isn’t?) this stab, pull and peel hack is absolutely everything. After posting the hack last weekend, the Twitter video could plenty of attention.

Along with responses from ranging from, “The reason I only buy minced garlic is because garlic is too hard to peel. Game changer” to, “Roast garlic and parsnip soup every day from now on,” some notable names got in on the garlic peeling applause action. Supermodel, super-mama and cookbook author Chrissy Teigen retweeted the video adding, “WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT.”

6 Fool-Proof Hacks to Get Your Kids to Actually Clean Up After Themselves

To rinse or not to rinse, that is the question. Your chicken, that is. The great foodie debate is raising concerns with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—putting iconic chef Julia Child’s position (to wash) on the back-burner.

Child famously “fought” (more of a friendly disagreement) with fellow chef Jacques Pepin on their PBS series Julia & Jacques Cooking at Home, insisting that poultry required a rinse before roasting. Pepin took the “hot oven kills the germs” stance, nixing the notion of washing chicken before cooking it.

So which position is the right one? Celeb chef Ina Garten sides with Pepin. But she’s not the only one. Like Pepin and Garten, the CDC is also an advocate for the not-washing stance.

Why shouldn’t you wash your chicken before cooking it? According to a recent tweet, the CDC says to not wash your poultry products. The reason being, “Washing can spread germs from the chicken to other food or utensils in the kitchen.”

There you have it! Rinse raw chicken and you run the risk of splashing germ-infused water onto your broccoli, cauliflower, spoons, forks and everything else that’s nearby. And that’s a major no-no. Instead of washing chicken, the CDC recommends cooking your poultry thoroughly to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

3 Healthy Food Hacks You Can Totally Sneak into Their Lunches & Snacks

Photo: Rawpixel

As cookbook writers, moms and lifelong wellness warriors, we’re always watching out for what’s next in food. One thing we’ve learned from feeding our kids: fresh ideas are a must.

You think they love that cauliflower with breadcrumbs, so you keep on making it because you’re ecstatic that they’re eating it. Then the fatigue sets in. It’s like when you tell a joke to your surly teenager and she actually laughs. You tend to repeat it because you love to be funny to her but eventually, you get the side-eye.

Here are some food trends to keep you on top of your game:

Hidden Hemp Seeds

Their omega-3 fatty acid profile is anti-inflammatory. They are next in line of all the “hip” seeds over the last decade: pumpkin, sunflower, flax and chia. They may be the best yet. Sprinkle at will. Wherever.

Just Beet It

They’re high in dietary folate and nitrates (cognitive function boost, we’re looking at you!). Golden beets are delicious, easy to cook—roast or boil them, nothing to it—and they don’t stain and get all over everything

On the other hand, just one red beet can do amazing things for your table. We’ve been roasting one and popping it into traditional hummus for some nice flavor and incredible color. It tastes healthy and delicious and looks like strawberry ice cream!

Homemade Nut Butters

We’ve loving almond butter, with cashew butter rising. It takes patience to blend nut butter just so, but the flavor is incredible. So much better than store bought.

Once you’ve slaved over a hot food processor or blender, the possibilities are endless. There’s the obvious almond butter toast with a drizzle of honey, maple syrup or jam, the base for a yummy Asian sauce to use in a rice or quinoa or barley or noodle bowl or a protein punch-up for your morning oatmeal. (Don’t love dairy? Put that stuff on your bagel instead of cream cheese.)

Getting a picky eater to eat can be tricky, but these tricks will at least help you make those lunches and snacks just a little bit healthier—and your kids will be none the wiser.

The Anti-Cookbook Easy, Thrifty Recipes for Food-Smart Living
Tinybeans Voices Contributor
We're Shelley Onderdonk and Rebecca Bloom. A veterinarian and a lawyer-turned-writer walk into a kitchen… We aren’t chefs and that’s exactly the point. We have a lot to share about food-smart living with our own young-adult children and other people and their children, too. Together, we wrote The Anti-Cookbook: Easy, Thrifty Recipes for Food-Smart Living.

We’re all looking for that next make-your-life-easier tip. So when the Food Network recently posted a video showing a Martha Stewart scrambled eggs hack…well, the internet kind of went wild. And for good reason!

Stewart is the reigning queen of all things crafty. And apparently DIY holiday decor and pretty little baked goods aren’t all the super-celeb powerhouse can do. Nope. It looks like Martha can make a pretty fierce scrambled egg—and not in the typical way.

Scrambled eggs. They’re not exactly on the same level as a sous-vide roast or a delicately herb-crusted halibut. Just crack a few eggs, whip them around, pour them into a pan and heat. Right? Um, not if you’re Martha Stewart. Instead of the stovetop version, Stewart made her eggs in a cappuccino machine. Yes, a cappuccino machine.

If you’re kind of skeptical about Stewart’s ability to create fluffy, fully-cooked eggs with the same steamer you used to heat up coffee-topping milk, there’s no reason to doubt this rad recipe. Stewart’s eggs are everything an egg should be, and more. Seriously. The eggs in Stewart’s video look like light little sunshiney clouds. Yum!

Dine with a view at River Roast

There's so much to love about River Roast . . . where to start? The concept, if you can't guess by the name, is roasts. Not the type smothered in gravy . . . not that we'd turn our shoulder to that. Think more like a roasted chicken. There are six different meat, fish and veggie roasts that live on the menu everyday and one rotating roast a month. For the month of October, that's a Pork Shoulder served with sauerkraut and root veggies. The coolest part? They carve your dinner right at the table.

Some non-roast notables on the menu: Fried Olives stuffed with chorizo (sounds weird, but trust us on this one), charred Curried Cauliflower and the Golden Gobbets, which are seasoned fried chicken strips served with an adorable Smurf-sized jar of honey that would make Pooh weep tears of joy. The incredibly friendly staff managed by Jay Schuster, brunches on Saturday and Sunday with a live jazz backdrop and the sweet view with outdoor seating overlooking the hustle and bustle of the Chicago River round out the reasons why we heart River Roast.

Side notes: For brunch, go with Chilaquiles. But, bring a bus load of people with you as they are uber generous with their portions on this one. And, River Roast just sweetened the deal by adding a S'mores Ice Cream Sandwich that tastes just like the bonfire classic and an Adult Sundae Fundae with Guinness ice cream, whisky cherries, rum pineapple, bourbon butterscotch and potato chips.

Have we convinced you to go yet?
